Roberto's Restaurant is an Italian restaurant, it is the main restaurant serving the Hilton Amsterdam, being a "five-star" hotel restaurant, I expected good things and good things were delivered. Before my visit, I communicated with the manager to talk through gluten-free options, I found out they offered gluten-free pasta, they offer penne and can accommodate various other dishes to be gluten-free, sadly this does not include the pizza. Inside, Roberto's screams to me fine dining, from a very smart bar, to a romantic/cool decor, I perhaps should have dressed better to come here, rather than wearing my Manchester City away kit! Upon greeting, my table was provided with fresh bread, and the manager was superb, he didn't want to exclude me so sorted me out with some fresh gluten-free bread, the bread did take a little while to come but this was fine as they were literally baking it, and it came out hot, the bread was actually enjoyable especially considering it was gluten-free, but missed that finishing touch with butter, gluten-free bread on its own is normally pretty bland and dry, this bread did need some sort of butter to add that taste which even a pot of olive oil couldn't do. As expected, Robert's is a little pricey in some areas, although I found my Carbonara to be good value at 15 euros, especially for quality, my friends chicken dish at 26 euros and then an extra 5 euros for rosemary potatoes, seemed extremely pricey to me. Booze was a little pricey too as with any place like this. The quality of my pasta was really good, although there was confusion at first as to whether I could have it - having a gluten-free menu to showcase this great pasta to encourage more people to order it and to make customers and staff more aware would be something to look at. The pasta was actually amongst the best I've had since I visited Italy, and it was around three-years ago since I last visited Rome. The sauce and the pasta all tasted fresh and it was seasoned perfectly by the kitchen, the parmesan cheese was real parmesan too, it didn't turn into a sloppy mess, it stayed nice and firm, adding good taste to the carbonara. The staff here seemed really friendly as well, they regularly came over to top up my water, even when I didn't ask for it which was great as they were so attentive, making sure I was happy and hydrated. The manager even came over to check about the quality of my pasta, he also seemed really helpful. I even got chatting to a friendly server for a few minutes, about football and of course my food. I ordered two scoops of ice cream for dessert, pistachio and vanilla flavours for 6 euros, these were average quality, the pistachio flavour was nice but slightly too nutty and I did have an issue with the vanilla ice cream just being slightly too hard. My friend commented her food was okay, but more selection in terms of chicken such as offering breast instead, and a different variety of sauces would have been better, she also commented that was the main part of the meal that didn't represent value for money, compared to other items on the menu. As with the rest of the hotel, you can connect onto free wi-fi here which is pretty fast and easy to connect to. Roberto's was probably the best meal I had during my time in Amsterdam, with superb, attentive staff and great, fresh gluten-free pasta and it deserves a strong four-star rating, If I wasn't leaving Amsterdam the next day I would definitely have returned! I must stress though that making sure gluten-free is on the menu would be good for customers and staff alike, so everyone knows whats on offer without the need to get in contact before visiting etc due to a lack of information on the website, but when this information was required, the staff were really helpful and the manager was great at communicating with the kitchen and adapting the menu to get a great meal that I could eat. read more

We were very disappointed and irritated with both the food and the service at this hotel restaurant. The portions were very small and lacking in substance. For example, two different people ordered the Penne alla Norma and they could not find any eggplant in their meals. Someone else ordered Risotto with asparagus and red prawns - the prawns consisted of two minuscule shrimp about 1/2" long on top of the risotto. The portions were so small, that both the men and women in the group left hungry. I ordered the limoncello sponge cake for dessert, it was about 1" thick, was heavily covered in whipped cream to make it appear larger and was very tasteless. If this had been an inexpensive restaurant, we would have said "You get what you paid for", but the food was mediocre at best and quite expensive. As far as service, - the server only came back once to check on us after we received our meals. We had all been out of water for quite some time, so we asked for more. We had no idea we were going to get charged for an $8 bottle of water. We made clear to the server before we ordered that our group of 7 people needed to be divided into 4 separate checks, yet when the bill came, it was all on one check! She walked off with the check and we did not see her again for another hour! After 30 minutes one of our group went looking for her and she was at a desk with someone else trying to figure it out. It was not rocket science - I don't understand what the problem was! I have been a server before and have never had any trouble taking orders on separate checks. One of the persons noticed they had been charged for 3 glasses of wine when they only had 2. The wine server refused to budge, insisting a 100-pound, 85 elderly woman had 3 glasses. Finally, after I said this was the worst service we had ever had, she backed off. Our bill was over $600, I can't believe she thought we were trying to get away with not paying for an extra $11 glass of wine! We arrived at the restaurant at 6:30 pm and did not get out of there until 10 pm. We all had early flights the next morning and had been trying to get out of there by 9 pm at the latest. Having dinner with our friends was wonderful but the restaurant experience was awful! I would definitely recommend NOT eating at this restaurant on your next trip. read more

The atmosphere strives to be high end Italian ... the servers are friendly ... but the food does not live up to its billing. One of the dishes we had was cachio e Pepe, a dish I love when I'm Rome - but this had way tooo much cheese and no pepper flavor. It was very similar to American macaroni and cheese. We had decent expectations but ultimately left disappointed. My husband and I chose to celebrate his birthday there tonight at the recommendation of our hotel concierge. Our drinks were terrible. We both had Veal Marsala, the presentation of which was unappealing and it was way too salty. The service we received was pretty bad -- in contrast to the attentive service given to the light skinned (White) diners. Bad attitude all over! It was so bad we didn't even order desert because we just wanted to leave. It was a complete disaster. I told my husband I'll have a do-over of his birthday celebration in Paris tomorrow. Unfortunately I can only give this one star as we weren't even able to enjoy a meal here. We were staying at the Hilton so we decided to stay close and try the restaurant at the hotel. When we spoke to the hostess she had no clue if they would be able to seat us and asked us to wait. A party that came in well after us was also told to wait. I have eaten here the past two nights, I kind of wish I wasn't leaving so I could go back for a third. The Insalata Misto Roberto is fantastic, I recommend it with the side of ham. The first night I had the Spaghettini Vongole which had tons of flavor in such a simple sauce. The second night I went for the Tagliolini with Buffalo butter and aged Parmigiano Reggiano. It was also very good, seasoned perfectly. The staff was generally attentive, more so the second night. There was a large party the first night that was demanding a lot of attention. read more

Ok for a Hotel Restaurant this Italian Fare is doing quite well from my perspective. Tobstart the buffoon mozzarella and tomato was very good and served with warm bread which I really appreciate. The pasta carbonara was freshly made and had high end taste. The Tiramisu duo was devine and the presentation was interesting coming in a paper cellophane wrap... Service was very attentive and very friendly. Ok the restaurant was not that full but I appreciated the efforts made by the service staff. So why no 5 stars???? As always the devil is in the details. The missing background music in an empty restaurant. The worn and partially dirty menus. The look of the waitstaff was not coordinated l. Some hairstyles were quite messy. Have a special occasion to celebrate or just feel like treating yourself - or even better - have an expense account? Then Roberto's is for you. The service is attentive - hell it better be for the prices that you're paying. The barbera by the glass was terrific as was the appetizer sample. Highly recommend ordering both. The steak with foie gras was decadent but I found the sauce was a little too sweet. I still enjoyed it but the appetizer sampler was really the highlight of the meal. I would just order that as my main course and then fill up on their outrageously good bread basket. Entrees are 30E and over so definitely be prepared to pay for the experience. read more

The server on the night shift is so rude and snooty. Her name is Sabrina. We were dining with some friends and one of them asked for a specific concoction and the server replied that it is an authentic Italian restaurant and they don't do anything like that. She even said it with an ATTITUDE!!! When my husband asked for a copy of our bill, she rolled her eyes. I ordered spaghetti and it was so heavy on the salt, I ate less than half since I was really hungry. Will never go back there ever again! read more
