Now, having said that, the gaugee here is "To DIE For". Who'd of thought that a placed named after Duck had such wonderfully tasty, crisp and generously stuffed gaugee? It's so tasty and crispy I wonder if they add duck fat to their deep fryer oil. Oh my stars! They have THE best gaugee I've tasted on island, AND it stays crisp after it cools down. Holy moly yumminess! We've also had the roast pork here and shades of Nam Fong! It's onolicious! We did a comparison of places that served roast pork and I believe Asian Mix won out. This roast pork takes first place. The takeaway? Roast Duck Kitchen serves the best roast duck, gaugee, AND roast pork! The char siu is good too, but for flavor, I'd choose Asian Mix as first place, this is a close second, though for char siu. Go to Aiea to try this place out. Pandemic update special- when you are in lockdown, you pick and choose where you will go when you do any shopping. You bundle what you need to get so you're not running around too many times in a week. So on today's agenda: Longs, Times and ROAST DUCK KITCHEN. They are still open seven days a week and they still are offering their great roasted meats. Haven't been there in awhile so coming back was long overdue. The objective: bring home roast pork and char siu. Both are roasted nicely, the roast pork with tender meat and crispy skin, the char siu tender and a nice hint of sweetness. We have always liked their meats so when the wife brought them up last night, I decided to hoof it down there in the morning. No line, pleasant and quick service. Same great meats, and they make plate lunches too. Found upstairs at the shopping center, RDK looks like a little hole in the wall. As you go up the escalator you can smell the delicious smell of crispy meats. Auntie and uncle speak Cantonese, reminds me of getting roasted meats back home. I'd heard of early lines but with COVID still hovering around, I got in and out this morning. Everything is so tender and juicy. I wanted to try everything so I got half a duck, a pound of char siu, and a pound of roast pork. Wow! Always seen this place but never tried, cause i always expected better from Chinatown. A coworker suggested here, and oh boy was I wrong. Went one day in the afternoon, about hour before closing and they only had roast pork, but it was Very think and tender. Not dry at all. A few days later went as soon as they opened at 9, and got a half order of duck and half pound of char Siu. Honestly one of the best I've tried. Brought it home and my wife had me go back to get an order for my mother in law. Considering it's a little pricey, my mother in law always gets this from Chinatown, she said prices are similar. The Wah Kung duck was OK and tasted good but it was also colored red, it was boney in that the meat stuck to the bone so tight, and actually come to think of it after subsequently coming here, I realize that it was pretty darn dry. In stark contrast to Wah Kung, the duck here is covered by a soft, succulent glistening chestnut-brown skin. The meat is fleshy, not all that stuck to the bone, fairly soft yet still firm with a really nice chew. The taste is of calm and subtle roasted duck, skin meat and fat combination that pleasures every bite, and entirely engages all of one's senses. It's such a clean, fresh duck taste that's hard for me to resist! Especially difficult to not want to eat it all when it's still hot! Hahaha! Ducks are ducks not cows or pigs or lambs so there's only so much meat a duck can have on its boday. I don't really understand it when ppl complain about the duck meat they're eating is between a skin and a bone and yet how it's too thin. You know what those ducks look like swimming around? Hehe Ducks already don't have that much meat, not like a cow, pig, or lamb. They naturally fly walk around and swim constantly so they're not gonna be all that fattened up. Right? Haha! Anyway, this is my favorite place to have duck so I'll order it on occasion for parties and get togethers. Sometimes I'll order one or maybe just half just to enjoy all to myself, but no matter what, I do realize that it is going to be a real treat! :D What I also love is that they'll add in a few gau gee to the order! Tucked away in the Aiea shopping center you can get a filling lunch plate for about $18. We got the roast duck and char siu lunch combo and ginger chicken. We waited for about 15 minutes to get our food. You get two scoops of white rice or claw noodle option ($1 extra). They were unfortunately sold out. Definitely want to try it next time! While visiting the nearby Pearl Harbor Memorial, I decided to bring the fam here to a nearby Hawaiian Shaved Ice joint that had some great reviews on Yelp. Unfortunately when we arrived at the outdoor mall that it was located at, we noticed that the place was actually closed and was in the process of being torn down to become some other establishment. My parents at this point was rather hungry and my dad noticed a little hole in the wall right around the corner. I was a bit skeptical at first, but there wasn't a whole lot of options nearby, and this place seemed rather busy. The lady who took our order, although busy, was super friendly and despite the constant flow of locals who apparently frequent this place, still made time for some small talk to get to know us and find out where we were from. We went for a couple orders of their lunch combo for $10, which consisted of your choice of meat, 2 scoops of rice, and a side of vegetables. When our order was ready, we took a seat at one of the tables outside and were pleasantly surprised at the very generous quantity that is provided at such an incredibly friendly price point! For our meats, we opted for the roast chicken, the roast duck, and the roast pork. Living and growing up here in the SF Bay Area, I have definitely had my fair share of roast chicken, duck, and pork. Everything from good, to borderline food poisoning. But out of everything I tried, RDK hands down has some of the BEST roasted chicken/duck/pork I have ever had! People were already lined up to order. Only one person is allowed to go in to order and after ordering, we had to wait outside for our order. There aren't any seating area for those who wish to eat their food right then and there. My grandma ordered a whole roast duck and I believe a pound of roast pork. The whole roast duck came with two free gaugee which was nice of them! The gaugee was surprisingly really really good. I wanted both of them, but I couldn't be greedy and had to share the second with someone else boo LOL. The roast duck was delicious! Super juicy and wasn't dry. The sauce provided definitely gave more flavor to it. It was a tad too oily though. The roast pork, on the other hand, wasn't as great as the duck. It was suuuper salty making it kind of difficult to eat. It wasn't dry but because of the saltiness, my family and I had a difficult time finishing the plate of meat. I always wondered why rdk is so popular. I haven't been here in years and now I remember why. A friend of mine told me that people tend to call and reserve their meats ahead of time and it's always sold out. The day I went on a weekend seemed fine and they had lots of meats available in the afternoon. I picked up half duck and ginger chicken which came out to no more than $20 I think. What's nice is that they accept credit card and they throw in some crispy gau gee. However, is all that extra fluff even worth it? It's kinda salty to taste and there is barely even meat on the meat if you know what I'm saying. Most times you'll get nice plump and meaty portions but it was mostly bones. I mean I guess there isn't many options out here on this side so maybe that's why they're busy and popular. However. I'm a townie with tons of options around me so this one was pretty mediocre to me. To top that off. Half of the parking lot was closed off for some reason so I had to park by the bowling alley which was also crowded and made my trek down in the pouring rain. Just locate the escalators and it's right off the escalators on the second floor. They don't have any inside seating. It's a take out place nothing fancy just good old fashion great tasting food that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, hotel, Airbnb. You order your food at the counter from a very limited simple menu and then wait for it to be prepared/cut for you upon ordering. Ordered the roast duck, roasted chicken, roasted pork and gaugee. Everything was so flavorful and fantastic. The skin on the roasted pork was super crispy and the pork meat still so juicy. The duck was meaty and seasoned well and still had some crisp on the skin. Didn't know what gaugee was but decided to order although I didn't know that the other orders of roasted duck and chicken also came with 2 pieces. These are deep fried filled large wonton style wrappers with a seasoned ground pork filling. So glad I over ordered all this food since even the left overs the next day tasted great. The woman seemed peeved cause I took 20 minutes longer to get there. The roast pork is tasty and tender; however I would have loved more crispiness. The cake noodles were dismal! The worst I've ever had. Very, very HARD! The container of sauce they gave me for the noodles was not enough to cover or soften them. They were brittle, dry, overcooked. Such a disappointment. I called to ask if I could drive down to pick up another container of sauce. You would think I was asking to return the entire order for a refund. She did not care that I couldn't eat the noodles. She yelled at me and said I was late. I asked her again if I could pick up another container of sauce and she bluntly said "NO. We cannot give you more sauce. Next time tell me you want softer noodles!" I am honestly floored by such blatantly bad customer service. I have never tasted bad cake noodles until coming here! Whether by accident or intentionally it seems they preferred to punish me for being late and rather than resolving the issue by simply giving me another half-cup container of sauce they refused to help me. This little takeout spot is a hidden gem serving up some awesome roast pork and roast duck. Although the namesake of this joint is Roast Duck their roast pork is what you write home about. The pork is flavorful and tender and moist. While half my order had soggy rinds, the other half managed to stay crispy. I'm sure if you ask for the pork unchopped the crispiness wouldn't be an issue. Their roast pork is one of the best if not the best I've had in Hawaii (I worked in Hong Kong for years so my standards for roast pork are high). The pork comes with hoisin sauce, but some of the tangy mustard that comes with roast pork in Hong Kong would've made it even better. I've been coming here for years, but recently introduced it to my family. Today we stopped in to grab some lunch. We were greeted by a friendly man who took our order. Everything on the menu was available except for the ginger chicken. He said they sold out already. I'm more into ginger chicken and roast pork, so I got 1/2 ginger chicken, 1lb roast pork, and 1/2 roast duck. They ran out of rice when I went (Tuesday at noon). They said this wouldn't be enough for 5-6 people (very true!!). Seems like the price went up a bit. The food was great, but not the BEST I've had. The ginger chicken was nice and cold, like how it should be. The pork was good, but unfortunately the skin wasn't crispy anymore. I haven't eaten the duck. I usually come on the weekends to get 1/2 lb. of roast pork for dinner. The line is out the door sometimes but they're quick. You can pre-order if you plan on ordering a lot of food but even with a pre-order, you still need to wait in the same line with everyone else. They sell out fast so if you don't have a pre-order, it's best to come before 11am. They also offer the plate lunch style where you can get roast pork, roast duck, or char siu with 2 scoops of rice, a side of veggies, and 1 piece of crispy gau gee. Their prices are about the same as what you'd get in Chinatown. They are located in the Aiea Shopping Center on the 2nd level. We ordered the roast duck, roast pork and Cha siu fried rice. Everything was great. The pork skin was crispy and the meat was most. The duck had a great flavor. The fried rice had lots of meat in it. Definitely a place to come back to. It was as good as the good roast duck and roast pork that we get on the mainland. read more
