Located on the middle level of Aiea Shopping Center (Starbucks and Times Supermarket is on the bottom; Aiea Bowl is on the top; and McDonald's is in the middle), Roast Duck Kitchen is between Koa Pancake House and Aiea Copy Center. Free parking is plentiful! This is a no frills, take-out place. I did see a picnic table (and a couple of benches attached to it) outside, right at the entrance. I've learned from kid time that when you talk with ppl who mostly speak English as a second language, you have to talk in executive summary, maybe a little slower if you tend to talk fast, and mostly only answer when asked. Don't confuse the ordering by trying to do any chit chat in between or ask them how they are doing today. Don't be wishy-washy; do be confident yet cheerful while ordering; if you have a question, just ask. Only stick to what you are attempting to accomplish. I've been ordering from this restaurant since I first read Ramfis B.'s review about this place quite awhile ago. (Thank you, Ramfis!!) And I have to agree that I sure love the food here. As a person who tries to avoid beef, pork, and chicken, it's really difficult to not order the cold ginger chicken, roast chicken, or roast pork bc they're so good! I'm not actually supposed to have duck either but duck is one of the few exceptions :P So lately, I've been ordering duck. A couple of previous weeks ago, I had just ordered duck from Wah Kung Chinese Restaurant and was reminded what I don't like about duck not from this place! Don't get me wrong, I do thoroughly enjoy the food at Wah Kung. The Wah Kung duck was OK and tasted good but it was also colored red, it was boney in that the meat stuck to the bone so tight, and actually come to think of it after subsequently coming here, I realize that it was pretty darn dry. In stark contrast to Wah Kung, the duck here is covered by a soft, succulent glistening chestnut-brown skin. The meat is fleshy, not all that stuck to the bone, fairly soft yet still firm with a really nice chew. The taste is of calm and subtle roasted duck, skin meat and fat combination that pleasures every bite, and entirely engages all of one's senses. It's such a clean, fresh duck taste that's hard for me to resist! Especially difficult to not want to eat it all when it's still hot! Hahaha! Ducks are ducks not cows or pigs or lambs so there's only so much meat a duck can have on its boday. I don't really understand it when ppl complain about the duck meat they're eating is between a skin and a bone and yet how it's too thin. You know what those ducks look like swimming around? Hehe Ducks already don't have that much meat, not like a cow, pig, or lamb. They naturally fly walk around and swim constantly so they're not gonna be all that fattened up. Right? Haha! Anyway, this is my favorite place to have duck so I'll order it on occasion for parties and get togethers. Sometimes I'll order one or maybe just half just to enjoy all to myself, but no matter what, I do realize that it is going to be a real treat! :D What I also love is that they'll add in a few gau gee to the order! One time I forgot that they do this so I asked: Hey, did I order gau gee? The lady laughed and said, "Oh, that's on the house! :D" To which I replied: "THANK YOU!! :D" They taste so good! Sometimes I cannot resist and will eat one! :D Wait! Maybe all three! :P :D Last thing. If you want to be sure you get half a duck, a whole duck, or a bunch of ducks, well, any duck for that matter :P, be mighty sure to place your order in the morning a little after they first open. If you call in the late afternoon, it might be a little too late to secure that duck you're dreaming of :( One more last thing. This place is called Roast Duck Kitchen. It's not roast duck Restaurant. Kitchen means this is a meat shop like the kind at Chinatown. That they have a couple tables inside and outside is a give on their part but they are solely a meat shop that sells more than just meat. In no way are they out to be a restaurant. Born and raised in OC and currently living in the Bay Area, I can attest to what good Chinese BBQ tastes like and Roast Duck Kitchen my friends, meets these standards! The roasted BBQ pork has a perfectly crispy skin on top while the pork meat itself literally is a "melt-in-your-mouth" softness. It's amazing! The roasted duck has a lightly crisped skin on the outside and the duck is flavorful, juicy, and tender inside. I highly recommend this place for lunch. While visiting the nearby Pearl Harbor Memorial, I decided to bring the fam here to a nearby Hawaiian Shaved Ice joint that had some great reviews on Yelp. Unfortunately when we arrived at the outdoor mall that it was located at, we noticed that the place was actually closed and was in the process of being torn down to become some other establishment. My parents at this point was rather hungry and my dad noticed a little hole in the wall right around the corner. I was a bit skeptical at first, but there wasn't a whole lot of options nearby, and this place seemed rather busy. The lady who took our order, although busy, was super friendly and despite the constant flow of locals who apparently frequent this place, still made time for some small talk to get to know us and find out where we were from. We went for a couple orders of their lunch combo for $10, which consisted of your choice of meat, 2 scoops of rice, and a side of vegetables. When our order was ready, we took a seat at one of the tables outside and were pleasantly surprised at the very generous quantity that is provided at such an incredibly friendly price point! For our meats, we opted for the roast chicken, the roast duck, and the roast pork. Living and growing up here in the SF Bay Area, I have definitely had my fair share of roast chicken, duck, and pork. Everything from good, to borderline food poisoning. But out of everything I tried, RDK hands down has some of the BEST roasted chicken/duck/pork I have ever had! The pork skin was perfectly crispy, while the meat was still juicy and sweet. While the duck and chicken were both roasted to perfection and so flavorful to bite into. I've actually never heard of this place until my grandma asked to stop by here to grab roast meats for dinner. Surprisingly, this is a good alternative place to to get some roast meats instead of having to drive into town! It's located on the second floor of the Aiea Shopping Center, hidden in the back where the doctor offices are. There's a parking lot with ample parking that won't ever be a problem. People were already lined up to order. Only one person is allowed to go in to order and after ordering, we had to wait outside for our order. There aren't any seating area for those who wish to eat their food right then and there. My grandma ordered a whole roast duck and I believe a pound of roast pork. The whole roast duck came with two free gaugee which was nice of them! The gaugee was surprisingly really really good. I wanted both of them, but I couldn't be greedy and had to share the second with someone else boo LOL. The roast duck was delicious! Super juicy and wasn't dry. The sauce provided definitely gave more flavor to it. It was a tad too oily though. The roast pork, on the other hand, wasn't as great as the duck. It was suuuper salty making it kind of difficult to eat. It wasn't dry but because of the saltiness, my family and I had a difficult time finishing the plate of meat. Don't know what all the hype is about this place, not any better than Kin Sing in Waipahu or Po Sing Kitchen in Mililani and not too much flavor (ie Chinese 5-spice). I wouldn't upgrade to the fried rice because it didn't have any flavor....very bland. Gau gee was fine but not as big as Waimalu Chop Suey. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again. read more

I always wondered why rdk is so popular. I haven't been here in years and now I remember why. A friend of mine told me that people tend to call and reserve their meats ahead of time and it's always sold out. The day I went on a weekend seemed fine and they had lots of meats available in the afternoon. I picked up half duck and ginger chicken which came out to no more than $20 I think. What's nice is that they accept credit card and they throw in some crispy gau gee. However, is all that extra fluff even worth it? It's kinda salty to taste and there is barely even meat on the meat if you know what I'm saying. Most times you'll get nice plump and meaty portions but it was mostly bones. I mean I guess there isn't many options out here on this side so maybe that's why they're busy and popular. However. I'm a townie with tons of options around me so this one was pretty mediocre to me. To top that off. Half of the parking lot was closed off for some reason so I had to park by the bowling alley which was also crowded and made my trek down in the pouring rain. Was looking for somewhere quick to eat that wasn't fast food. Came across this Chinese spot located in a busy plaza on the second floor. Just locate the escalators and it's right off the escalators on the second floor. They don't have any inside seating. It's a take out place nothing fancy just good old fashion great tasting food that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, hotel, Airbnb. You order your food at the counter from a very limited simple menu and then wait for it to be prepared/cut for you upon ordering. Ordered the roast duck, roasted chicken, roasted pork and gaugee. Everything was so flavorful and fantastic. The skin on the roasted pork was super crispy and the pork meat still so juicy. The duck was meaty and seasoned well and still had some crisp on the skin. Didn't know what gaugee was but decided to order although I didn't know that the other orders of roasted duck and chicken also came with 2 pieces. These are deep fried filled large wonton style wrappers with a seasoned ground pork filling. So glad I over ordered all this food since even the left overs the next day tasted great. I've been coming here for years, but recently introduced it to my family. Today we stopped in to grab some lunch. We were greeted by a friendly man who took our order. Everything on the menu was available except for the ginger chicken. He said they sold out already. We didn't have to wait very long for our food and the plates were nicely placed in a cardboard box to go. The portions were pretty generous. We were able to feed 5 people plus had leftovers! Everything was yummy. My favorite has to be the crispy cake noodles and char sui! The roast pork at this spot is excellent too. We will definitely be back to try the ginger chicken. I hate to do this because this used to be my favorite place. But the last few times I've come here its gone downhill. I keep giving them another chance hoping it was an off day, but no such luck. Today I picked up the end cut roast pork and an order of gau gee. First off, the best part of the roast pork is the skin and out of the entire pound, we had 2 pieces with skin. And the meat is usually really juicy, but it was a little dry. How disappointing! Next, we open the plate of gau gee and it looked really dark. We took one bite and nearly broke our teeth. A good example would be, think of day old gau gee that has been left out, then refried. It was chewy and hard, we could barely eat it. This place is a "whole in the wall" that can be easily found by the huge line outside of people trying to get food. The food here is so good and its why I have gone back over and over. The Roast Duck and Roast Pork are great every time and so fresh. The prices are fair and good value on the plate lunches in my opinion. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is every time I call, there is no answer of the phone and get sent straight to a message that this place hasn't set up a voicemail. On different occasions I have tried to call up to and including the day before to place an order without being able to have anyone pick up, but its not the end of the world other than standing in line for 5-10 min to place an order. What can I say. Sweet and simple place to get duck, Chinese style. You may want to call ahead as their duck sells out sometimes before noon. I love their Roast Pork, possibly the best thing on their menu. You can't go wrong with their plate lunches. You can have the fried rice option if you want for a a little more. Gaugee is a plus IMO. The last time I wanted to try their roast duck, they were sold out. So I knew they had to be good. If you live in Aiea area, you can get tasty roast duck here instead of traveling to Chinatown. One thing for sure, the service is very pleasant. So far, I tried their roast duck and crispy Gau Gee. If you know how to chop your own meat, I say get the uncut roast duck and chop it yourself because they'll sell you the fresh one off the display. As for the taste, it will melt in your mouth. It's juicy and so good. If you get it chopped it's not as fresh but still good. The crispy gau gee is $1 a piece and $8.95 for 9. Crispy gau her was little over fried but still good. I've heard a lot of great things about this place! Many said they have the best roast duck in Hawaii. I'm more into ginger chicken and roast pork, so I got 1/2 ginger chicken, 1lb roast pork, and 1/2 roast duck. They ran out of rice when I went (Tuesday at noon). They said this wouldn't be enough for 5-6 people (very true!!). Seems like the price went up a bit. The food was great, but not the BEST I've had. The ginger chicken was nice and cold, like how it should be. The pork was good, but unfortunately the skin wasn't crispy anymore. I haven't eaten the duck. The service was great and bagged everything for us very very quickly. Overall pretty good, I just realllyyyy wish the roast pork skin was crispier. read more

I usually come on the weekends to get 1/2 lb. of roast pork for dinner. The line is out the door sometimes but they're quick. You can pre-order if you plan on ordering a lot of food but even with a pre-order, you still need to wait in the same line with everyone else. They sell out fast so if you don't have a pre-order, it's best to come before 11am. They also offer the plate lunch style where you can get roast pork, roast duck, or char siu with 2 scoops of rice, a side of veggies, and 1 piece of crispy gau gee. Their prices are about the same as what you'd get in Chinatown. They are located in the Aiea Shopping Center on the 2nd level. We wanted to order roast duck and roast chicken rice plates but they were out of the roast chicken when we arrived. So we chose roast pork and roast duck instead. We definitely enjoyed the food! Portions were good, duck and pork both were juicy and tender. Highly recommend trying their roast duck. However, the fried dumplings that comes in the rice plate were our least favorite of the meal.
