Brocolli and beef take out and served it at home
    Barbara D.

Why did it take so long for us to eat here? We live close but this restaurant isn't so appealing. However, I was convinced when one of our friends brought the crispy gau gee to a bbq. Those things are huge! Days later, I kept thinking about them gau gees and decided to order them and other items from their menu to go! We ordered the crispy noodles, beef and brocolli, spicy shrimp and the crispy gau gee. I was impressed! Flavors are on point and they cooked everything well! Last time I ordered the beef and brocolli at a Chinese restaurant and the veggies were mushy. So gross but not here! They were cooked just right and although I didn't care for the beef too much, everything else was great! If you get one thing from here, make it the crispy gau gee! $14.95 for 8 but they're humongous!

Went to Waimalu Chop Suey to take some friends from the mainland. We ordered cake noodles with mixed vegetables and char siu, the cake noodles were very good and not overly done and the sauce was. Tasty! Crispy fried chicken was not very good this time it wasn't crispy and on the cold side, so it had been sitting for awhile and the flavors was on the bland side like they didn't flavor it. The giant crispy Gau gee was great and huge as ever could put pictures on all the items we had, because this sight doesn't allow me to update and add current photos and menus. Inchoi with garlic sauce was very good and much easier to eat than Choi sum with the large stems. The fried rice was good! Steamed garlic fish was also good and the fillet was tender, could use more flavor, but we had to leave out the sesame oil due to some having allergies. The Kau yuk was good, not as tender but the flavor was there. Restroom is still broken leaving 1 restroom for men & women to use make sure you lock the door when you enter! Service is so so, it not like they are busy they have time but they are seen many times talking story with other workers and if you want anything you need to wave them down or call them or get it yourself. They tact on a set tip on groups and I guess with that they don't care! They will receive that amount anyway and ask for cash tip if you are charging!

    Beef Stew Saimen

The other night I wanted a warm hearty meal. We decided to visit one of our favorite and affordable Chinese restaurants. She ordered the dinner plate special which looked good. I ordered a beef stew with saimen. It was the best tasty beef stew and saimen bowl I ever had. The broth was mixed with some stew sauce and loved the hearty beef stew meats. In fact I couldn't finished all the beef stew and took some home to enjoy later. Service is always good and the servers can speak English and Cantonese. It's big enough to hold family gatherings and small parties also.

I love the Hawaiian "chop Suey houses." They remind me of New England, where so many towns have a "(name of town) house of pizza". Different food, same idea. Anyway, I come in, everybody is friendly, the place is not fancy at all. Just a simple sit down restaurant. I wanted to try a Char siu Manapua bun, but I had to order two. So I had one there, and I took one with me. They were huge, fluffy, with a generous amount of delicious char siu on the inside. For my main course, I had a lot of choices, but I went with the mixed plate, with the crispy Gau gee, (fried dumpling with meat and vegetables inside) as well as roast, Duck, cold, ginger, chicken, and fried rice. Everything was amazing. Once Again, I tore into the meal so fast, I forgot to get a picture. The gau gee was huge, not greasy at all, and the filling was very savory . The duck was tender, and delicious,, and not overly greasy like Duck can be. The chicken was also tender and delicious, and you could definitely taste the ginger. And the fried rice was tender, and also had a lot of flavor. He also brought me a hot mustard mixed with soy sauce. I normally don't care for Chinese hot mustard, but the fact that it was mixed with a little bit of soy sauce tempered down the heat. It was delicious. I had plenty of food left over to take back to my room for a generous breakfast in the morning. For all I got, and for the quality of food, the price was extremely reasonable. This was my last meal of my Hawaiian vacation, and it was definitely a memorable one. Thank you.

WOW!!! Look at the size of the Crispy Gau Gee!

I gotta give it up for Waimalu Chop Suey, as I feel it's time to update my review of this Chinese restaurant. Yes, I haven't forgotten the cockroach incident, but that's in the past, and when I think about it, I just have to laugh. Lol! So my dad had some friends visiting from the mainland, and one evening I decided to take them out to a Chinese restaurant they haven't tried before - Waimalu Chop Suey. What can I say about Waimalu Chop Suey? It's your basic old school, mom & pop Chinese restaurant. The dated décor of the restaurant is definitely old school with those vinyl booths, and of course they have another section within the restaurant to accommodate larger parties with large tables. After entering the restaurant, we were greeted right away, and menus were dropped off. Upon looking over the menu, I decided to get a fixed menu for (4) people, and added two more dishes to our meal. We ordered the following dishes on the fixed meal - Scallop Soup Chinese Chicken Salad Tender Beef Sizzling Platter Honey Walnut Shrimp Chicken with Asparagus Fried Noodles Dessert And the added the two following items - 1/2 order Peking Duck with Buns Steamed Fish Fillet with Ginger & Onion Sauce What can I say about the grub? The food was tasty and the portions were more than generous, but I would say that the star of the meal was that Peking Duck! The Peking Duck was very meaty, and who wouldn't turn down some duck skin in a bun? Lol! After enjoying our meal, there were lots of leftovers to take home afterwards. Service was on point, and our waitress was very friendly. Just an FYI.........if you like Gau Gee, this is the place to check out! Don't bother to order the soft gau gee, order the deep fried crispy gau gee! It's totally worth it, even if you doctor lectures you about eating stuff like that! Lol!

Back in the day Waimalu Chop Suey had the nickname "House of Gau Gee". The current owner has brought it back! Huge Crispy Gau Gee perfectly cooked and delicious . The House Noodles prepared with Hong Kong Noodles was perfectly cooked and delicious. We also tried the Capital Pork Chops, Asparagus with Beef, and Honey Walnut Shrimp. Spacious dining room and ample parking in a private parking lot . Service is quick and typical of a Chinese restaurant.

The food was just ok and service was not great. We went in and were told to sit wherever. We sat and they came by with menus and water. The waitress took a very long time to return back to take our order. Eventually we place our order and it did not take very long till they start bringing our food out. They brought everything out besides the rice. We reminded the waitress and even still it took a long time for her to bring out the rice and we couldn't start eating without it. The food was ok but not as good as other Chinese restaurants near by. Portions are very small which surprised me. Usually Chinese restaurants have bigger portions because it's family style where the whole table shares... one portion really is enough for one person so make sure to keep a menu so you can order more or just order extra from the get go. After we received the food we pretty much did not get any help after that. I saw the other tables had tea, we did not get any.. I also saw waitresses bring the bill to some of the other tables, we had to go to the register to ask for ours. It was just very obvious that our table was being treated poorly there compared to other guests. Maybe it's cause every one else was Chinese but my table wasn't... I really don't know why my table in specific was not being treated good from the start. Overall I will never be back there. Food was decent and service was even worse. I would give another chance if one or the other was amazing but food and service not great... won't be back.

Beef broccoli chow mein, pot roast pork, sweet sour spare ribs, gau gee, fried shrimp, fried rice. Special plate $12.99
    John N.

I just wanted to order the monster Gau Gee they have here, but stayed for lunch. They have a lunch special plate for only $12.99. It has Beef broccoli chow mein, pot roast pork, sweet sour spare ribs, fried shrimp, and (1) gau gee. Chow mein kinda bland (6/10). Pot pork, soft kinda bland (6/10). Spare ribs hard as rock, dry as rock (3/10). Fried shrimp was okay (7/10). Fried rice was bland also, like regular white rice (6/10). Gau Gee 9/10 huge, crunchy and delicious. Should have stuck with my initial plan. Anyways, for $12.99 it's kinda ok. Service and atmosphere is 6/10 what you expect from a Chinese place. Would I eat here again? Maybe only the Gau gee. Aloha.

We decided to give this spot a shot and it wasn't what we expected. Meat on both plates were cold. The noodles were the only thing that came out hott. Ended up not being able to finish our food.

We came back again for crispy gau gee, for both of my parents as it's my mom's favorite and had the sour cabbage with pork for my dad which was also good. We also tried the chow fun and I enjoyed it. I can't get chow fun at many places back home so I enjoy it here when I visit here. They have some new dim sum menu items that are the usuals. The service was quick. The bathroom door doesn't lock and didn't appear clean. We stood guard at the door for each other. The floors in the restaurant are very sticky which was not pleasant. Overall, prefer takeout for now as the food is great.

We decided to eat here for New Year's Day 2025. My Uncle wanted to eat the Crispy Gau gee from here. He is visiting us from California and wanted to see if the gau gee still tasted the same. He said it was tasty and it tasted the same as he remembered. The three of us ordered the Special plate for Lunch and side order of gau gee (8pcs.). Everything was the right temperature and tasted really good. We all Enjoyed our lunch and the hot tea. Great Service

7/5/2025 Ordered crispy roast pork $13.99

7/12/2025 So yummy the eggplant and lemon chicken dishes. Lemon chicken was surprising juicy and tender. I think the portion sizes are larger than other restaurants because we had leftovers again. My picture makes the portions look small, but they are quite big.

Portion of the chicken. Chop sticks to show the scale of the picture.

We ordered the following: * Char sui fried rice - nice taste with the char sui mixed within the fried rice. * Peppered beef w veggies - good taste, the veggies consisted of bell peppers and onions. * Walnut shrimp - nice shrimp pieces fully covered w the cream/sauce served w walnuts on the side. Nothing fancy; tasted like others that I've tasted before. * Oyster sauce chicken over cake noodles - wish there was better chicken pieces and more sauce for the cake noodles. I had to scrape up whatever sauce was on the serving dish to top off the cake noodles. * Pork chops - this was one of my favorites as it was cooked perfectly and tasted great. There was this green onion & jalapeño mix on it but I don't like spicy so I stayed away from the jalapeños. Crispy gau gee - it was small and it tasted ok. Have seen bigger, filled gau gee. Service - the ladies came around frequently to refill our water glasses. We were given take out boxes to bring home the leftovers. Their sweet and sour sauce was good. I spooned that over everything. Prices - seemed reasonable enough Would we return? Maybe but if we really wanted to eat Chinese food, we probably would go somewhere else. Would we recommend this place? Sure, as everyone has their own taste. I understand this is the 3rd owner and I wouldn't want them to close up because of my review. The restaurant is a China-based franchised chain with 750 locations in the US and 70+ locations in No. America. This restaurant is the 1st and only location in HI at Pearlridge. This restaurant initially caught my interest when it first opened; however, as it is not close to my home, I eventually forgot about it until just recently when I was in the area. So hubby and I had a quick lunch there. We had just wanted to try their most popular menu offering, the original pork bone soup rice with rice noodles and fatty beef. We were told that one order is sharable between two people. Perfect! Our server brings out a black cauldron of the piping hot pork bone soup. She then brings out a tray of 10 little round porcelain dishes of chives, pickled cabbage, quail egg, goji berries, wood ear fungus, white fungus, meat paste, ham, tofu puff, and corn. Slightly larger ceramic servers included cooked fatty beef, fresh lettuce, and cooked rice noodles made with 100% rice flour. We were instructed to add the beef and lettuce to the broth, then add the 10 ingredients s and stir well, and finally add the rice noodles and wait 10 seconds until ready to eat. We enjoyed it, and wondered whether this was a trendy novelty concept, in addition to being an authentic appreciation of Yunnan foods. We used the house chili oil, which gave the soup a good kick in heat! Our server, Janelle, was very friendly and patient, knowing that this was a first time for us. She explained the process, which made it easy to understand. We explained that since this was our first time, we wanted to try the signature soup and then trying others the next time we visit. Hours of operation are daily from 11a to 8p. The restaurant interior is clean, bright, and spacious. Ambiance is casual and welcoming with interior décor of Chinese lanterns. Free parking is available in the Pearlridge Shopping Center that is shared with other businesses of the shopping complex. There are daily discounts: Monday - military 10%; Tuesday - senior 10%; Wed, Thurs, Fri - early bird discount. There is a 3% credit card fee. What interesting concepts in the authentic flavors, fresh ingredients, and unique "crossing the bridge noodles!" We look forward in returning to try different menu offerings of various soup broths, appetizers, dim sum, and desserts! A great introduction to Chinese hotpots!

Good, deep flavor with a touch of garlic taste. Portion was fair. I also got to try the crispy gau gee, which I don't usually eat. The one from this restaurant impressed me though. Not the size, but it wasn't oily and the crunch was light and crispy. I'd definitely order the crispy gau gee again. Everyone liked it too. All in all, Grand Chinese Restaurant was a good choice for Chinese food.

Sometimes there's no taste, sometimes it's a surprise dish, receiving a different dish from what you ordered. Yes, the cashier points at different boxes and reads off the receipt, but they have no clue what is inside. Speaking of the cashier, there is a young Chinese girl with tattoos on her arm, who must think she's doing me a favor ordering food from there. She never smiles and is definitely not a people-person. And heaven forbid that you ask for chopsticks and an extra watered-down hot mustard. I spend at least $120 per order and the look she gives you, I feel like slapping it to knock some sense into her! Their business depends on us customers!

Looked over the menu and found a handwritten "Bento" sign located below the counter. Bento price is $7.50 except for the Meat Jun for $8.50. It comes with the main entree, 2 mandoo, 1 veggie and a scoop of rice...wow, good deal! Main entree choices are: Mochiko Chicken, BBQ Chicken, Chicken Katsu, Fried Shrimp, Fried Fish, Shrimp Tempura, Meat Jun or Musubi Combo. The veggie choices are: Choy Sum, Corn, Kim Chee, Shoyu Potato, Bean Sprouts or Japchae. You can substitute the rice for an extra veggie. I ordered the Meat Jun with Choy Sum. For $8.50, they gave a good amount of food which I enjoyed and had leftovers for another meal. The guy behind the counter was nice and service was fast. I would definitely return to try something different. This place is in Palama Supermarket that's located at Waimalu Shopping Center. Lots of free parking but this complex is always busy. Sometimes it's hard to find so park at the first stall that's empty. There are 2 entrances/exits that circles around so if you can't find parking, you have to circle around again because the isle is only one-way.

The first, and most annoying thing is, the strips of hot dog in my "7 treasure" noodles. Most places use ham? Other than that, the noodles had a decent flavor. The hot dog taste is off-putting though. The Kung pao chicken had a very loose gravy and not much taste. The Mongolian beef, although spicy, didn't have much else going on. The crispy gau gee was very crispy and well seasoned, the best of the 4 things by far... My phone order was quoted 20 to 25 minutes, it was ready when I arrived to pick it up and the worker was nice. Definitely not impressive for the total cost of $62. Stick to the dinner plate
