They showed up late for pickup, then after we paid they started pushing us to leave a good review. I'm so glad we didn't. After our stuff got picked up, that's when the real terrible service started. They initially promised us to 2-3 weeks for delivery, but they stopped returning our calls and texts after week 3. We tried calling over and over, they started screening our calls, because when I called on a number they didn't recognize I got right through (they said they couldn't tell me anything because my phone number wasn't associated with the order even though I had all the information). After 6 weeks they let us know they were finally shipping it, and we should allow 7-10 days for delivery. It showed up in 4 days, catching us by surprise so we had to scramble to get money into our account to pay via Zelle (which ended up being $600 higher than what they quoted). Almost every box is damaged in some way or another. We started opening boxes and almost every plate and bowl is broken. This goes beyond a bad experience, this is the single worst company I've ever dealt with, I honestly think everyone there shouldn't be allowed to work in this industry. read more

This place is the absolute worse, they are attentive when they want you business and then once they pick up your items, there is no follow up on when it will be delivered. No one answers the dispatch phone and when we finally received our items (several weeks after it was promised) our mattress was completely black like it had been dragged on the street. Of all my experiences with moving companies (including 4 interstate moves) my experience with Roadway Van Lines has been the absolute worst by far. And in fairness, it wasn't all bad - the care and concern, and professionalism, that the movers exhibited during the pickup in D.C. was a far cry, and almost a "cover" for the horrendous unprofessionalism and chaotic delivery of the local crew in Georgia. During the planning of the move, in every conversation with the (I'm assuming her title is) Moving Coordinator, I was assured that this move would be stress-free, convenient for me, and worth the over $4,000 price tag. The company was responsive, and informative when I had questions, and seemingly answered everything in the affirmative - before I signed the contract. In retrospect, maybe that was an "if it's too good to be true..." red flag. The pickup in DC went smoothly, and without a hitch - so much so, that during the move out I left briefly to run to an ATM to get cash for tips for the 3 movers! While I had meticulously packed and labeled everything (I am VERY thorough when it comes to such things) they went above and beyond in securing my belongings and even re-boxing and re-taping things just to ensure it all would survive the two weeks between pickup and delivery. Fast forward to the "first available day for delivery". A day that I indicated would be the first day they would be able to deliver. I received a call (from a caller with "No Caller ID") that didn't sound like a professional moving company that I had already paid $2,000. When we spoke I inquired about the delivery - he said between 1-4 days. All good, although I do travel out of state for work, I was prepared to adjust my schedule to accommodate the delivery. The day of delivery, I was given a delivery time between 8am - 12pm. I worked from home that day with the intention of taking my business trip in the late afternoon/early evening. After waiting a few hours, I called dispatch (two numbers that are NEVER answered but go directly to someone's voicemail) and was not able to get anyone to tell me when the shipment would arrive. When I finally received a callback, I was told that the delivery would now be between 4pm - 8pm. Close to 6pm, the very unprofessional driver called to let me know that he would come "sometime tomorrow" because his day ends at 8pm. So, an entire day has passed - a day that I needed to be out of state for work, and the following day I am mandated to be in D.C. I arranged for a local friend to work from my home the next day so that she could receive the delivery. Upon arrival the driver insisted that she pay him cash or a money order for the remaining $2000. I was able to speak with her with the driver, who refused to take the payment via Zelle (the way in which the first half was paid) or CashApp. And so I had to have a friend go to a bank to pull funds out. The driver had the nerve to inform me that he will charge an additional $150/hour for him to have to wait - I guess he forgot he inconvenienced me for an entire day. Everything I shipped was thrown into the living room. Boxes that were clearly marked "FRAGILE" had been crushed, and just thrown into the living room. Wardrobe boxes marked for each bedroom - left in the living room. There was no intention to place my belonging in the rooms that I indicated. And when my friend who received the delivery asked about it - the response was "it's not in the contract". Whether that be true or not, the Moving Coordinator endured that my belongings would be placed where I indicated. In retrospect it seems that she would have agreed to anything to make the sale. To recommend that no one ever use this company would be an understatement. I don't know what questions I could have asked that would have given me cause for concern, but their service model is disjointed at best. Unempathetic to customer's needs, adherence to their own contracted service, and misleading in touting all its accreditations at worst. PLEASE be sure to read the "owner''s" response. I want to start by saying that the crew hired to pack our furniture in Maryland and the crew hired to unpack it in CA were top-notch. They worked hard, they worked steadily, and they did a great job. Almost no breakages. The van company itself, we will never use again. As soon as our furniture was on their truck, they stopped communicating with us. We were told it would be 3-10 days for everything to find us in CA. 16 days after we moved, they finally called us back and offered "expedited" shipping for $1750 more. They also said that they could legally keep the furniture for an additional 3 weeks. Eventually they brought our furniture and charged us an unexpected $2000 "shuttle fee." When I tell you I have not had a worst moving experience that is saying something because I have moved a lot. I loved from dc to Tampa. I knew something was up because they showed up in a U haul. Still, they were very professional. They charged an additional fee because they had to roll the wagon extra steps but still it seemed ok and they seemed professional. The problem and excuses came with delivery. The rental truck broke down and they had to work with Budget to get a new one. It went from possibly tuesday to Friday evening. Saturday morning they called and said they were downstairs. It was that abrupt. I paid with credit card when they picked up and a final payment was due which the contract said could be made with a cc. The guy says, only cash or money order. O I get ready to go to the store. He then asked to use my brand new bathroom and based on what I heard, it was bad. They unload half my stuff and say they are done. I'm like there is more. They can't figure it out. I tell them I had more boxes and they tell me there are no more and they must be at the warehouse. I don't care where they are, find them and deliver them! They start trying to give me other people's stuff--an ottoman, a machete, a mattress. JUST GIVE ME MY STUFF! I had to pick out my own mattress off of the truck. I hope I picked out the right one. I had to keep track because they would dig around on the truck and come back with one more thing and say they were done. It was so ridiculous and unprofessional. Be ready for extra charges than quoted if using their services! I was on the phone with them explaining the exactly pieces of furnitures to be moved. Also said we would have around 20-25 boxes in addition to the furnitures. Ended up less boxes on the moving day. On the moving day, the movers first said there would be an extra $350 because of our massage chair was "extra large"????!!!! It was a standard massage chair we brought from Costco and it was claimed in details during the quote call. We called the company right away to complain about this unexpected extra charge. The movers seemed to be contractors and said they were only responsible for moving............ I argued this was not in the quote, no results. No surprise, nobody from the company answered the call. How would they? As we had to move and no other options, we had to sign the contract. I was reluctant because it sounded so unreasonable and unreliable. Even after I double checked with the movers there wouldn't be any extra charges when unloading. They mentioned there would be an extra $75 if there were stairs when unloading. As we were moving from a single family to an apartment, this $75 seems unavoidable and acceptable. So we signed. It took them literally 21 business to arrive. Ok, loooooong but within the contract. On the day before the unloading day, they called and said there would be an extra $300 because they couldn't drive the trunk to the front of the apartment and had to switch to a smaller truck. Even I saw big moving trucks in front of the apartment building (the largest Penske truck they used when loading my stuff) and this didn't sound like my problem, I checked with the apartment manager and told them in advance it was ok for their truck to come in. Still, on the unloading day, they called and said that they already switched to a smaller truck without informing us so. They could either unload everything in the lobby or charging $300 to move everything to the apartment (ground floor). I argued why they didn't mention this in the first place. They said it was stated in the contract appendix........ maybe someone else can read the long contracts including the appendix during the hectic moving day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was so sick of their scam and just paid the extra. The moving was ok... just having a few boxes broken, no huge loss. I am still super upset about the additional charges each time. I wish they could be honest and upfront with the cost. I would be happier if quoted more than charged more because of the unreasonable reasons....... Please read all reviews. My primary mistake was that I was impulsive and accepted the lowest quote after multiple calls without reading reviews. I was initially quoted 1,943 for a small itemized list for a long distance move. I asked for a sat am. I was promised that my requested date and time will be honored I called a week prior to reinforce my request and told we will call u 2 days before . I got called fri to say o it will be Sunday night . I protested and was told you were told a 2 day window. I asked about canceling and told u will have a $450 cancellation fee and we keep your deposit. Then the dispatcher said ok the best I can do is Saturday night. I left multiple messages emails texts on Saturday as no one had called me and I was worried. Movers called me at 6 pm to say we are on our way. The movers then charged me $2500 plus saying move goes by cubic space and I said small boxes and had medium and large boxes. I don't recall mentioning size of boxes . I must also mention that there were plenty of items on the original list including a daybed that I did not take with me,stools I did not take with me, and other items. How was it more money. Well they had me in a predicament and I was forced to accept. I provided them a check for 1268 as requested ( half of the fee) The movers were quick and efficient I don't blame them as they are just the employees prob being underpaid Anyway upon returning my items one week later after much back and forth they sent one man. I used this company to move me from Virginia to a small town in Iowa. Needless to say not on their normal route. This company packed my personal belongings up in Virginia and moved it and I had no idea what to expect. WOW OH WOW!!!! The truck showed up today and I was AMAZED! The two men were very kind and courteous. Everything was packed in Blankets or other type of wrap. Nothing was damaged. They text and kept in contact along the way. They called an hour out and showed up right on time! Over all I would use this company again if I have to make a cross country move! The dispatchers were great and answered every question I had. Over $3,000 worth of damages and I'll be lucky if I get $300 in claims covered. My mattress and wooden furniture are completely destroyed because of water damage and mold. I filed an insurance claim, but this is one of those situations where I needed to read the "fine print" and their default insurance coverage reimburses only $0.60 per pound. So even if they damage my $1500 mattress, because that mattress weighs 100lbs, at best (if the claim is approved) I'll get just $60. Their insurance portal has all these hurdles that put so much burden on a customer you can tell they don't want to approve any claims: you cannot throw the item away (but in my case I had things covered in MOLD.....I'm not going to keep them in my home while I await a claim to be approved which can take 120 days), upload every single document (even though the company should have a copy), upload sets of pictures of the entire item and the then parts of the item (this would be impossible to do if you trashed the damage item), list the link to a website to validate price and weight of each item (again hard to do), etc. etc. Again, I understand the insurance claim part is a separate issue and may be inapplicable to many potential customers, BUT just the sheer lack of care for my things should be enough warning to have you stay away. There is a basic level of good faith customers put in businesses to fulfill service in good quality, but sadly this was not my experience at all. Moreover, see pictures here of how the moving truck stored all the materials. Even if I don't consider my main issue with complete mold and water damage of my things.....it took over 1 month after moving into my new home to get my things. I had to call and email several times to simply ask "Are my things on the way to my new home?" I STRONGLY advise everyone to AVOID this company at all costs. They misrepresented their offer when trying to make the sale. The "10-12 day average delivery" has become, they've just told me, a possible 32 day delivery time. It's only after THIRTY-TWO days that they consider themselves "late". The movers who came and picked up the furniture were fine. I was happy with Rachel, the customer service rep, at first. But she's since vanished and I'm dealing with the 32 day lady who is not even apologetic about waiting two weeks to even give me a target delivery date. Would rank that above this experience in a heartbeat...no financial shakedown and customer service was consistent. My super-fun-terrific experience with ROADWAY: The beginning - the sexist lead mover treated my significant other like a second class citizen, talking down to her, dismissive, just generally horrible and we called Brooke Davis back to cancel. I was clear across the country and could hear him in the background. Brooke went back and forth with alleged managers and swore that this was not representative of the company and to give them a chance, etc. He made moving day stressful as hell. (Also, thanks for putting duct tape directly on the feet of an antique table. Pure negligence). Worst decision I ever made that day. Should have cancelled. Our hunch was spot on. Then there was the end when they were completely unresponsive after delivering someone else's belongings to our home. So if someone out there is missing some stuff, we might have it and they don't care. Or maybe it is important to you to have a clear inventory, but let me tell you about the mismarking or not labeling at all almost half of our entire load. And then there was the shady 'we have to use a shuttle' the day before a holiday so we were stuck paying an extra $450 even though we had clear instructions that 18 -wheelers could access and we have SEEN THEM in the designated movers area before. This was sent well in advance of delivery day, too but they decided in the afternoon on New Year's Eve weeks later, when you have nobody to contact at the actual company and are backed up against the wall, to tell you they just aren't going to do it and that you can either pay the money or and I quote, "pick it up from storage on your own". They changed their excuse three times as to why a shuttle was required. Each one was wrong. THEN the sad story about how the money doesn't even go to them, it is the cost of the truck rental, but guess what...the truck belonged to the delivery person...so another round of nonsense. So just get ready for your own, personal financial shakedown and last minute stress. Oh and by the way, the people doing the delivery will absolutely not admit they work for Roadway which makes you wonder how this fraudulent company can claim they aren't technically a broker. They told us the company they work for and...wait for it...it was also on their shuttle. You know, the one the company had to rent for the employees of the non-broker. Give me a break. At least keep all of your lies running in the same direction. Customers like consistency after all. Worst move I have ever had. Avoid at all costs. Update 5/5/2021 The owner contacted me to discuss my problems with this move. In my opinion he made things right by addressing the additional costs that I incurred. I can honestly say that customer service these days like that is pretty rare and it was very much appreciated. The other issues noted while frustrating did not prevent moving my stuff from DC to Texas. And at the end of the day their rate was at minimum 10-15% lower than the other movers I had contacted so I am revising my rating accordingly. read more

It is in my opinion that any good reviews for Roadway Van Lines was written by Roadway Van Lines. I have dealt with several moving companies in my life time and this has to be the worst company I ever dealt with them and I am surprised they are still in business and not in prison. It has been over a year since I used this company and NO issues have been resolved. In my opinion this company consists off a bunch of scam artists , lairs and crooks. They quoted me one price and doubled that price before they would move my possessions. When they loaded my furniture they had ample resources but when the furniture was unloaded they provided one man and his wife. After the move we noted much damage, boxes were missing and much thievery. Computers, important papers, important pieces of furniture , valued possessions, etc. We tried to resolved the problems but were given the run around and lied too. No resolution at this time, The owner, if such a person exists took no part in helping us and did not return numerous telephone calls. Perhaps he is in jail and has no use of a telephone, His staff indicated that he never comes into the office. At this time I am just sick in dealing with this fraudulent company. My next step will be filing claims with the United States Transportation Secretary, The Maryland District Attorney's Office and the better Business Bureau for Maryland. The move happened as expected. However, some of the furniture was scratched and some items were a bit damaged but I guess that's what you get from a long distance move with a low price. On Friday, October 22, movers from Roadway Van Lines were moving someone out of our condo building At 1401 Church St. NW, Washington DC. The building has a strict masking policy due to COVID. The mover was not wearing a mask in the elevator, so I asked him to please put one on. He said he would, but later in the day I saw him again without a mask. I reminded him in a nice way that the building has a rule about masks. He abruptly told me that he is breaking the rule, and not in a nice way. our property manager was notified, and I am hoping that this company will no longer be allowed in our building. NEVER AGAIN! I would not recommend Roadway Van Lines for moves, especially long distance ones. The move for 650 sqft of items from VA to FL cost me almost $4000. They lost valuable items including Golf clubs and dining table and damaged quite a few items. They also left someone else's corner table with me. The delivery driver/assembly person and his assistant were swearing at each other during delivery, and were "dumping" my boxes upside down breaking items along the way. 1. The pick up went well. The sales team was very responsive. 2. However, after they pick up the items they were hard to reach. It seems they only work three days a week. Their voicemail always indicates they are on a holiday Monday through Thursday. I also got emails to the same effect for multiple contact effort. 3. I stored the items with them for over 2 months. Instead of regular invoicing or payment request, they charged my credit card (which they had in file during the item pick-up) with $975 about 2 months in, without providing me with a rate or notice saying that amount was being charged. They never provided an invoice for that. Upon multiple inquiries, I was told, that was the rate for storage. 4. After multiple efforts (again, you are lucky to get one response a week) I was able to set the delivery date, which was about 2 weeks after my requested date. 5. Delivery driver indicated he would not be able to deliver because the trees were too low and the roads were too narrow in my neighborhood. After much convincing he was able to come in without any issues. The roads were wide enough and trees were not too low. There were other 18 wheelers on those road. 6. Driver asked for cash upfront, before he started unloading, which I thought was odd. 7. Driver had one helper, who was on his phone while the driver was setting up my furniture. He would just dump my boxed on top of each other (often upside down), even the ones that were marked "fragile" and "this side up". A lot of the items were needlessly broken or damaged. 8. He just had me sign the document, told me I should file a claims with insurance and bolted out the door. He didn't even sign the delivery paper. 10. I have filed claims with insurance, which may take up to 120 days and I doubt I will get a 10th of what I lost in loss or damages to my items. The movers charge by space but the insurance pays by weight. So, light items however big or valuable will get paid out at a minimal. 11. Roadway did an excellent job for me on a long distance move from Virginia to St Louis. Julie in the sales team was very professional and knowledgeable and set my expectations correctly for a 10-14 business days wait for my stuff to arrive. It was a little over 2 weeks. The moving crew at each end were very good - very quick to pack up and wrap everything pretty well. The estimate was pretty approximate but I wasn't very tight on my number of boxes so I had to pay more than the estimate - my bad. On delivery to St Louis, Dave and Nico did a great job and got everything into the apartment very quickly - all the crews were very polite and helpful and made it a good experience. I had over 70 items and one box appears to be missing - working with customer service on that now. I would like better options on insurance for peace of mind - the industry standard insurance is a joke and 3rd party insurers are ridiculously expensive (over $1000..!!). read more
