As a woman of transgender experience I am mistreated at restaurants and establishments just for being me. Calling my girlfriends and I GUYS even after we request to be addressed as ladies. The restaurant and staff were respectful from the beginning. I did not have reservations but was accommodated and seated right away. The staff address me as Miss, considering it's in the Gold Coast I appreciate the formality. Had a delicious omelet with spinach, onions, tomatoes and feta cheese. The waiter brought toast with butter and a delicious jam. It all came together with a cup of coffee and great service. We have some friends in from L.A. visiting us this week and first thing on their list was a boat architecture tour on the river. Having just done this deed, lunch was in order, so on our walk back to our condo, we settled into a patio table at RL (Ralph Lauren) Restaurant. The menu was very well curated and there was something for all of us. One had a Kale Caesar with chicken. One had a Crab and Avocado salad. One had a Chopped Vegi Salad. And I had (something I can never pass up) a Lobster Roll. The lobster roll I had here at RL was possibly the best I've ever had and the irony of this does not escape me. I've eaten lobster rolls from Maine to Maryland. From Seattle to San Diego! I'm talking up and down the eastern seaboard and western seaboard and everywhere in between. That's a lot of saltwater and land I'm talking here. So, how could a Chicago restaurant just off Michigan Ave. and 1,300 miles from the nearest ocean pull this off? I sure as hell don't know, but indeed, they did! RL's lobster roll was meaty, I mean a lot of lobster meat; both claw and tail. It had just the right amount of mayonnaise added to make it perfectly moist. The bun was incredible; buttered perfectly, it brought this sandwich together. The fries that came with this roll were crunchy and really tasty. This a giant "Who woulda thunk" or "knock me over with a feather" statement due here. I was duly impressed and will be back for an encore performance very soon. The service was excellent. The setting and ambience was elegant. The noise level was nonexistent. We were at RL last evening after the theater. Reservation was at 5:15pm, already the place was packed! And when I say packed, I mean they packed us in like sardines. I think they added more tables to the dining room, the waiters were literally squeezing through sideways to try to serve. It was uncomfortable. Having said all that, in spite of being so crowded, the noise level was fine, we could talk and hear each other, the waiter was very pleasant, and the food was outstanding. Two people ordered the calves liver in coffee reduction, two people ordered the sea bass but with different sauces and one had a salad with salmon. We were very happy diners. I don't do this often but five stars for Ralph Lauren's Chicago Restaurant. The menu was great, classic options with a more sophisticated approach. The ambience was everything you could want or imagine for a restaurant for RL. The food was delicious and such great quality, everything from the ranch I ordered for my French fries to the lobster role and calamari. The servers were beyond superb. Overall 10/10 experience. It was very busy and crowded (rightfully so!) so I appreciated how the staff was in no rush to get our party out of there, they were there to simply aide us in enjoying our experience. read more

This place was amazing! The decor was one of a kind and overall had a cozy feeling to it. The hostess was friendly as well as our server. I ordered the fish of the day which was sea bass. RL is a pretty classic and well-established restaurant in the area. The indoor ambiance reminds me of an old school steakhouse combined with a private library -- dim lighting, brown/red leather and dark woods. It stays true to the Ralph Lauren ambiance of the retail store itself. I was debating between and 3 and 4 star rating, and the staff is what really shot it up in stars. My parents have been coming here for a very long time and come in quite frequently. The service was outstanding and I wish I caught our waiter's name, but he was attentive and totally kept up with conversation and had us all laughing. The food was not bad by any means, but nothing that was super overwhelming. I ordered the veggie burger. I am not wild about barbecue sauce so I had it on the side and didn't end up using it. There was a bit of dryness to the burger but I suspect that a sauce would have solved that problem... that was a personal choice. It was not exceedingly flavorful, but still tasted good. Had all of the right fixings -- Avocado, Tomato, Arugula, Pepper Jack Cheese & Barbecue Sauce on a Toasted Sesame Bun so not sure why it just didn't rock my socks. That said, I ate the entire burger with no issue. I also sampled a bit of the chicken milanese that my mother ordered and it was very tasty. I was really in the mood for a veggie burger but would definitely try the chicken next time. I had a side of french fries with my burger, which were somewhat underwhelming. We were clearly judged. My friends and I had a reservation for 4 at noon on a Tuesday. We were sat at a pretty crowded table and after ordering a bottle of champagne and bottled water the table was busy! Our waiter didn't really seem to care about our experience at all. The ladies seated next to us were given much more attention. We overheard him selling the specials to them and when we asked he said curtly salmon, scallops, crab cake. Like we were annoying him. We had to pour our own wine, ask for him to take more drink orders and generally do his job for him. The meal was fine, nothing special, but when the talk of the lunch is how bad the service is, it really sours the experience. Was really hoping to love it. The beautiful greenery gives you more of a secluded feel which I absolutely loved. I ordered The Vegetable chopped salad with grilled chicken and Hubby ordered the RL burger and cocktails. RL has a marvelously simple menu of perfect choices, with attentive servers who will get the kitchen to modify almost any dish to suit your taste, all timed to suit your soup / salad / cocktail schedule. I love it so much, I hosted my wedding reception for 12 at RL, one week after SCOTUS made it legal. It was glorious. Bunky sent cookies to our table. Since then, whether with reservations or not, navigating the "hostess stand" is a nightmare. First, they want to seat you at a table in the bar. Unless you're a tourist from Indiana, you don't want to sit by the busy bartender's station. When you decline, they try to seat you next to that place where all the forks and knives are being sorted -- making conversation impossible. And just yesterday, after embarrassingly declining three seating choices with a VIP guest, we ended up next to a table of four-year olds. The words, "bottoms on seats or no ice cream!" are forever embedded into my memory. Chuck-e-Cheese on Boul Mich, I need not. So, farewell, RL. If your front-of-house staff can't read their audience and/or your store clientele, they're in the wrong jobs. Also, Joe's makes a far superior lobster roll. Maybe you should sell to Melman and focus back on Lipshitz ties? read more

Food and service are delicious, location puts you right at Michigan Ave shopping and transportation, and the restaurant is classic. Manager came to our table to talk and was extra nice, awesome server too; worked there for 15 years so we trusted him. What a great find! I never knew Ralph Lauren had a restaurant. It's right off the magnificent mile around the corner from the RL store. It's decor is dark wood with eclectic art and photos all over the walls. Feels very rich and fancy. We visited twice during our brief visit to Chi town. It was that good. Both times we sat in the bar area which is first come first served. Otherwise I'd definitely recommend you make a reservation. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating. For lunch, my parents both ordered salads. My daughter and I shared a veggie burger with fries. The kitchen was nice enough to split it for us. A touch I always appreciate. My only small minor complaint was the burger was a little mushy. But the flavor was spot on. The second time my husband and I stopped in for a nightcap. The bartender was making all kinds of yummy looking craft cocktails. The bar area is a little small but it encourages everyone to talk to each other. We were seated just inside the door next to the hostess stand but you wouldn't even know it. They got us started with waters and a deeeelicious bread basket almost immediately. The little brown bread and crunchy sesame seed crisps, I could eat all day. Carbs, am I right? We got started with a few drinks and I got their old fashioned. It may be the BEST old fashioned I have ever had. Smooth, balanced, great bourbon, and the essential large ice cube. Yeah, it does make a difference. You can't change my mind. So two old fashioned later - we got a bottle of champagne because why not and decided to stick with a couple apps. So the perfect pairing with Champaign is French fries - which were fresh, crispy, and seasoned perfectly. My friend got the lobster bisque - which was super tasty and I'm bit a big fan of lobster. My wife and I have been here many times, ever since we found out that they serve Dover Sole, a rarity in Chicago. This place never disappoints in every facet of fine dining. Last night my wife, our niece and I went for a great holiday meal. We were greeted at the front of house by the great duo of Maya and Peyton. I cannot verify the spelling of their names, but they were both warm and welcoming, starting off the evening in a great manner. Besides both being charming and informative, they were really funny and entertaining as well. Loved meeting them. When we were seated, our waiter Tyler was a treasure. He got us a side order that was not on the menu that night and it was much appreciated. All three of us had the Dover Sole, as we always do when we eat there. It certainly is the best Dover Sole that I have ever tasted (though I recognize that not everyone loves fish) with an unparalleled lemon butter sauce. Our sides of mashed potatoes and green beans were excellent as well. We all started by splitting the Caesar salad which they have altered since last dining here in the summer, employing little gems instead of a romaine/kale combination.
