As a boy, my father told me, from his own experience as a Japanese businessman, "you can tell how good a Japanese restaurant is by the number of Japanese businessmen in them." I added a caveat, you can also screen them by the name of the restaurant. If it has "sakura" or the name of a city in it like Tokyo, Osaka or Kyoto in it, don't bother. if they don't greet you when you walk in, that's another flag. if the waiters or any of the staff don't smile, bow and greet you at all, that's another flag. Not bad, not great, but not bad. The waiter could have been more attentive. It was a kind of civility you give to an unwelcome relative. you have to be nice, but you're not particularly going out of your way to make they're comfortable. I kind of wanted to order tea and some more sushi after my main course but I just got the check before I could. Oh well. Their loss. I don't think $5 is worth 2 rolls either, not for what they're selling anyway. So I ordered tuna and salmon rolls, followed by a sukiyaki for the main, which seemed to include an appetizer. The rolls skimped on the rice, which also lacked the characteristic flavor. Instead of coming out fan-shaped it looked more like a fishing dinghy tried to bring home a whale, or someone tried to put a mattress on a compact car and the back half dragged on the way home. They didn't hold together very well either, also lacking the bit of wasabi underneath. The tuna itself looked to have been frozen for a while, but being in the desert, I'd be very lucky to get fresh tuna. The salmon turned out pretty well, though again lacking rice and flavor. The appetizer I was surprised with, some strange take on yakitori. Not too shabby as far as taste was concerned. The sukiyaki though, I had some issues there. Now it's not a stew like nabe. Instead of sitting in sauce, it was nearly drowning in it, and the sauce itself was much too weak. I will say, I'm not a fan of shiitake mushrooms but this instance wasn't too bad. They skimped a bit on the noodles and vegetables, but that's fine. The meat didn't turn out so well though, which is a problem with sukiyaki. Sukiyaki is supposed to be thinly sliced, but this turned out more like roast beef from the deli coutner, and on the overcooked and tough side. And again, instead of thin slices, I got a big ball of meat just sort of stuck together. No wonder the flavor wasn't in it, they just pulled it out of the freezer, thawed it in the microwave and just sorta hoped the ball would soak up the soupy sauce. Another thing, you usually get an egg to soak the meat in to eat it. At least traditionally, which was a bit of the expected approach since the place is named after a famous historical figure whose picture is on the wall. Just saying. I wouldn't say it's a bad place to grab a bite of sushi, but it's definitely not worth what they're asking. If you want to get a fix on a taste of Japanese food, this place is okay. read more

So being from Reno, Nevada, the All-You-Can-Eat sushi capital of the world, it was hard for me to eat sushi else where because in Reno, $20 get you unlimited and delicious sushi. So when I was station here 12 years ago. My selection was limited. Most of the time, I avoided sushi like the plague because either it wasn't good or way over priced but at Riyoma, it was one place that I didn't mind. One thing Riyoma did back then, which was authentic, was the sushi chef would place the wasabi under the slices of fish. I was impressed and Riyoma was the only place I would frequent. read more

Since being stationed here at Ft Bliss I have been to almost every sushi restaurant in El Paso. There is no doubt that after being stationed at Yokota AFB in Japan I have more than just developed a taste for sushi, it has become an obsession. After trying all El Paso has to offer in this department I have to say that the sushi at Riyoma is without question the best. Not only is it of superior taste and quality, the atmosphere inside this small sushi bar is authentic and amazing! If you like sushi, you must stop by this place! Huge rolls but only 4-6 pieces in each roll. The rolls are difficult to eat as they are not proportionate to your mouth. Soda in a can...really? Let me guess you would have charged me for each can of soda if I would have had more than one... (Yeah, I caught on to you very quickly). I understand business very well but this place is way overpriced. Spent almost $50 for 3 average rolls and a squid salad. The problem is that the rolls were made with only half the seaweed sheet...get it? Ingredients were average. My advice would be to try to please your customers instead of seeking a profit by nickel and diming them. We left unsatisfied and a little sad. On a good note...I will be making home made sushi more often because a lot of El Paso's sushi restaurants are so-so at best. read more

My husband and I have been trying to find a good sushi bar on the east side because we were tired of driving to our usual bar on the westside. And this place is even better than the place we've always gone to. Sushi was amazing! The miso soup was even better. It was a smaller restaurant but quiet, great music and awesome service! I've been going to Riyoma for years and years. Since the prior owners were running the show. It was so great! Then it was good! Then it was okay! The last time, it was not good. The portions have shrunk every year. The meat gets smaller and smaller every time I go in. I love the salad dressing. Before the salad had a tomato and a cucumber. Now it's just iceberg and dressing. The last time I went the dressing was rancid and starting to go bad. I was so disappointed. I'll probably give them another try, hoping against hope that they get it together and quit skimping. And yes, they will charge you for a second can of soda if you order another one. Stick to water or tea. I also wish they would change up the menu with seasonal or special items. went for lunch with my boyfriend. the food was good, sushi was excellent. i was surprised with the freshness of the fish since there are no bodies of water around el paso lol. the price was a bit higher than what i'm used to, but i have lived in los angeles and san diego, where sushi and sashimi is in abundance. staff was really nice and friendly. my boyfriend loves the squid salad here! read more

i love their sushi. natalie, one of their servers is the best. she is extremely friendly and helpful when ordering. this is the only place i go for sushi. when you have had really good sushi in places like california you know authentic. sumo sushi and riyoma are probably the best in town!!!! other's are want to be's!!! read more
