While sightseeing in Georgetown in the rain today, we decided to eat some lunch at the River Room. Since we were not real hungry and we had dinner arrangements with friends in the evening, we shared a fried founder sandwich with fries. It was not the best flounder sandwich that I have ever had, but it was very good. Service was excellent. read more

Enjoyable dinner with good service. Had the McClellanville crab balls which were really good, the house salad was very fresh and crunchy with great blue cheese dressing, the porterhouse pork chop was cooked perfectly and choice of sides were collard greens and grits. The grits were a bit coarse in texture so not a favorite which meant their shrimp and grits dinner was not to my liking. Again the grits were coarse not creamy and the tasso ham sauce was a tad bland and a bit gelatin like in texture. Wine selection was limited but did have some good options at very reasonable prices. I would definitely eat there again but would not recommend the shrimp and grits. read more

Food is overpriced and the menu is disappointing. Plus, we were charged a 30 percent up charge per person - because we had a party of approximately 8. We only had one waitress to our table, and she was very slow on refilling drinks. Plus, we asked for more rolls, and never got them. Not enough seafood choices on menu. read more

Really a great place to eat. We had lunch there and in November so we had no wait. The service was very good. I asked if I could have a combination that wasn't on the menu and the waitress said no problem. That was great. And you really get a large plate. Actually my husband & I could have shared a a plate. Do make sure to ask. Had good menu of craft beer so I tried the Broad River Red. Really good. Dessert menu was phenomenal. So I will have to give it 5 stars. Wonderful food, staff, and location. Tonight I had the stuffed chicken breast. Absolutely delicious two stuffed chicken breast, cooked tender with cheese and Taso ham. Mashed potatoes were cooked and whipped to perfection, vegetable medley was delicious, and include a nice salad with house made dressings, and warm rolls and cornbread cubes. Amy was our server and she is the best at making her guests feel welcome and providing drinks and bread just before you needed them! Outstanding, as usual, dining experience. We were planning to go on the Swamp Fox tour and wanted a nice restaurant nearby. The River Room was across the street and seemed to fit what we were in the mood for. We had a bit of trouble finding it as it is only visible from the street in one direction. It is built into the side of one of the buildings, not the front. But if you see a park with the harbor in it, and the ice cream shop, it is right there. The food was very good and I appreciated that the black bean soup was gluten free. It can be difficult to find restaurants with gluten free soup options. The shrimp creole was gluten free as well and is the main dish both of us enjoyed. With one beer, two soups, and two main dishes, the bill still came out under $40 after the tip. It was an enjoyable lunch in a great atmosphere that didn't break the bank. We are doing the Great American Loop trip (a boat trip that circumnavigates the Eastern half of the United States), and our favorite part of the trip is getting to a new port and eating the local foods. Now with this Coronavirus situation this is not possible. However, we now try to support the local economy by ordering take out from the restaurants that offer it. This restaurant was recommended to us by a local. We called and they told us that they have a limited menu to accommodate the take out orders. The McClellanville crab cake entree that we ordered was well priced, a hefty portion and tasty. The crab cakes were tender and juicy; maybe a little more dough than what we prefer, yet still good. The sides were sautéed mixed vegetables (tender yet still crunchy, tasty with butter and garlic) and mashed potatoes (flavorful and homemade). It also came with sourdough bread and cornbread, both very good. It is hard to rate a restaurant just on one dish, and especially on take out, mainly under out of the ordinary situations like this. However, we were so pleased with everything we ate, everything was so tasty and well made. Mostly we are happy that they are open for take out and glad that we were able to support them. read more

I take chemo therapy so still need to social distance but the owner worked with my husband to find a way to take me out to eat for my birthday and sit away from the crowds. That was several months ago and every time we have gone back they let me pick out a table in the corner. We love the "joes chicken" or pastas at dinner and for lunch the shrimp and grits or chicken sandwich are our favorites. Really good desserts too. read more

Grits could've been better but I was craving grits so it was okay. I like my mashed potatoes more creamy and these weren't very creamy, but the rest of the table really enjoyed them. Outstanding food in an old building on the water. I had the flounder sammich, which was good, hot, and flaky. My wife got a salad, and my mom got a chicken sammich. All the food was good. Service was prompt without being overbearing. Prices were reasonable considering the location. The place was clean and filled with plenty of nautical effects, but they didn't detract from the meal. Arrived at 5:00pm to get a window seat. We got our choice! Very pleased. The server was very courteous and gave us plenty of time, at our request, to order. I had the fresh yellow fin tuna and vegetables. All were perfectly prepared (not over cooked as so often happens) and the presentation was pleasing. My dining companion had the mud pie with ice cream for dinner...was delicious! Have just moved back to the area and was so pleased to find that this restaurant is still a treasure! read more

Gas leak and inadequate staff: I have personally dined at the River Room for over 15 years. My family and I have spent many birthdays and family gatherings there as well. Having worked in the service industry for almost as long, I'm very familiar with how things should and shouldn't be run or handled. We tried to call ahead of time for a larger party to make a reservation for lunch. They stated that they didn't take reservations but we did let them know that we were coming and how many there would be in our party. We were told that we could be accommodated with no problem. We made sure to come after the lunch crowd (1pm) but with plenty of time before they conveniently close at 2:30pm. Upon arriving, they took us to our table... tables.. they sat us at two separate tables, claiming that the other two tables that would be able to seat us were in use. First off, we would have been more than happy to wait for a table, and second off, we weren't given the option to wait. We were seated in a corner with only one other table nearby because they weren't very busy. We politely asked why we couldn't just move the tables together so that we could at least be facing each other. We even considered the fire marshal rules in restaurants and flipping the tables the other direction would not have caused an issue or been in the way. The staff member claimed that the tables were bolted to the floor and they were not able to be moved. I then shifted each table just a few inches either way to disprove her statement. So we then shifted everyone into two separate tables because they were too lazy to move the tables and by this point, the older couple of the group were too tired from standing that we left the tables as they were. As we started getting settled in, we noticed a very strong smell. We were seated next to a gas fireplace that wasn't on. The smell was so strong, a few of us were lightheaded and left with headaches. We mentioned this to the staff, and one of them said that they had mentioned it to the owners several times because of other complaints but that no one had done anything about it. A staff member then came back and claimed that they hadn't turned on the gas yet that year. Well, if that is the case, then you must obviously have a leak. The food was subpar, some of the bread was rock hard, and for only being open for 2-2.5 hours by this point, the staff seemed like they had been through the wringer and seemed not to care or want to deal with anyone anymore that day and had crappy attitudes. Altogether, this was an incredibly sad experience and I hope no one else has to deal with this. read more

A surprise stop in Georgetown on the way to Myrtle Beach turned out to be a delightful little gem. Maybe because it's Christmas and cold outside but the restaurant felt so warm and inviting. It's super casual but cozy and friendly. Most of the guests seemed to be regulars, lots of chatter between tables and servers. We were sat by the Christmas tree and an open fire. Delightful! I stopped here for lunch on a day work trip to Myrtle Beach from Charleston. The decor and location are superb! Staff was super friendly and most the tables have a lovely view. I had a soft shell crab hoagie sandwich and my coworker had a salmon salad. Both were excellent. My only complaint was, for not being super busy, it took FOREVER to get our food. The view was very nice. The atmosphere was very inviting and the service was extremely friendly. The only issue we had was the food took a long time to come out. I ordered the soft shell crab po boy (soft shell crab sandwich) and it was amazing. There was a nice sized fried crab on there with a lot of fried and 2 onion rings. Everyone enjoyed their food from the chicken salad to my po boy to the shrimp Alfredo. The prices were very cheap as well compared to what I expected. I have lived in Murrells Inlet for close to 13 years. The crusted Grouper is hands down the best Grouper entree I've had. My guest ordered the seafood platter and it was phenomenal. Lunch was nice. Nothing amazing but certainly a good meal. The atmosphere was pleasant, not too loud and the staff was very friendly.

If you've got a few hours to spare, you may have a happier experience here than I did. It took my party of four around two-and-a-half hours to have dinner with no appetizers and no desert. We were seated right away but after that, the service was almost non-existent on this Monday night that wasn't particularly crowded. Our server, who disappeared for long stretches at a time, seemed annoyed when taking our order, especially when we inquired about the possibility of substitutions for some of the sides, then when I finally asked if I could swap my sides for a baked potato, she said, "Oh yeah, you can do that!" as if she totally forgot that was an option. When we finally were served something around the one-hour mark, we were so disappointed it was just our salads. We'd sort of forgotten about those. Around this time I finally got the drink I ordered, an espresso vodka martini described as being shaken to a froth. Needless to say, the froth had long since departed my beverage, leaving it looking about two-thirds of the way full. I was just happy to have something sweet to combat my falling blood sugar. I'd still like to know what took so long for that-there was one ingredient so it was literally pouring a flavored vodka into a glass. Maybe the frothing and defrothing process is more involved than I imagine. We were finally served our food after watching it tour around the dining room, stopping by a table (to pick up a steak being sent back to the kitchen) opposite us and separated by a glass window. It was cruel to finally see our food, so close and yet so far. When the server set our plates down with the customary warning, "Watch out, it's hot!" I had to stifle a laugh and the urge to say that I seriously doubted that. And as predicted, the plates and the food itself were warm, not hot, though some of the dishes might have been if not for rerouting. What warmth there was wore off about a quarter of the way into eating. The one dish that was hot, was a serving of the bubba gump pasta, covered with a tell-tale, heat-lamp film, and when dug into a mushroom cloud of scalding steam emerged. At least it was hot? My crab cakes were good, nothing special and certainly not worth the wait or the price. Our server was suddenly and strangely attentive when pushing the deserts, having only paid cursory attention to us till then. If we'd ordered anything else I'd probably still be there waiting. The second star is for the fact that the food itself was fine, and was probably pretty good before its sightseeing expedition on the way to our table, except for the heat-lamp heated pasta, for which there is no excuse in a restaurant in this price range, or any, really. Otherwise this was a pricey, one-star experience and none of us would ever return. The impression I have, based on the glowing recommendations I'd seen and heard, is that the River Room was at one time worthy of its reputation but now is just coasting along on it. There are better places to eat in Georgetown for a fraction of the price, and with service that doesn't seem to be offered under duress. read more

Great local seafood restaurant. Big place, might be 40 or more four tops,very popular, there was a waiting list for a table - maybe 15 minutes. Decor is normal nautical for a seafood place. Hostess was OK, our server was nice enough, friendly, well-organized Food came out fast considering the crowd. My wife had the grilled salmon which was very good. I had a seafood combo - shrimp and flounder - which was also very good. Good choice if you are in the area. read more
