Let me start by saying that Helen is lovely and gave an awesome pedicure. But I'm downgrading my experience for a few reasons: 1. Limited color selection and nail polish bottles looked really old (color/oil was separating inside) 2. My manicurist was unfriendly and rough 3. They overcharged my friend by like $30!! They later realized their mistake, but that's a big mistake. 4. They wouldn't honor a gift card I'd received there the year prior because they said it was under different management. The weekends are busy, so I would call. I usually call to make sure they are not busy. Most of the ladies are pleasant. I just moved to River Oak and wanted to try this nail salon near my home. The sign says "walk ins welcome". There was no one in the store when I walked in and around 4-5 nail techs doing nothing. One was eating lunch. They said I would have to wait 2 hours to be serviced because of their "appointments" who weren't even there. It's giving racism. I'm a black female. Walked into this place asking for a mani pedi and simply wanting to look at their color options. The woman was so rude- looked me up and down and was offended I even asked to see colors then tells me they "don't have availability anyway" which is funny, considering they have 2 signs on their door in giant writing saying "WALK INS WELCOME" so not only did the rude woman just refuse me service but also STUNK of so much chemical fumes to trigger a migraine. When I read the reviews below, I'm fairly shocked and have some reason to believe these reviews are for the wrong "River Oaks Nail Spa." It's unfortunate that there are multiple businesses with the same name, but these reviews couldn't be further from the truth! To show how strongly I feel, this is actually my first Yelp review! I use Yelp often, but for many reasons have kept my opinions non-public. First things first, this is a very clean salon! They doubled in size probably over 5 years ago which included a complete update/remodel. The salon is run by a mother/daughter duo that take pride in their work and personally train their staff. This salon is quiet and always relaxing. I'm quite particular about my nails and the daughter, Trish, makes them look fabulous every time. Trish also helped my mom switch to shellac after years of acrylic. My mom's nails are naturally healthy again! The salon always has new colors; regular, shellac, gel, etc. She offers SNS organic as well as acrylic... Pretty much anything you want or need in the world of nails, she has it. If she doesn't, she'll often get it. She stays up to date with fashion and knows the nail trends. Her staff is very sweet, most have been with her a long time. I allowed my daughter to go and get a refill on her nails with friends. They would not allow her to do so. Since she was by herself, they acted as though no one in the shop spoke English, and the one person that apparently spoke limited English informed her that they could only do a full-set for the Dip Powder to match (not factual). Disappointing that they would take advantage of a teen that way. They also refused to have one person work on her nails, and instead had one person working on each hand, so that she came out with two completely different nail outcomes. Each hand was filed differently, shaped differently, and the quality of work - subpar. Do not waste time or money patronizing this establishment. read more

They always speak in a foreign language, they lady that was taking care of me doesn't have any patience, when I asked her to show me 3 different colors she made me faces and started to complain to the others women. I felt really uncomfortable and ask to leave and she left and nobody came to me. So I paid for the removing color from my nails and left. Never had such a bad experience like that before. And the most important thing is that after I removed my nail color from fingers I realized that I've got nails fungus after I had my last 3 treatments at that place so just beware. read more

Great nail salon! Clean, lots of massage pedi chairs, and the tech was nice, thorough, and did a great job. Subtracted 1 star for parking. Why does the cleaners next door get like 20 spaces? And CVS and Bird & Bear have the rest. The nail salon has only 2-3 spaces. I had to park really far away down the lot. Not that I mind a walk, but with a fresh pedi, I like to get in my car right away. read more

Finally a nail salon I don't hate in Houston! In fact, they're kind of great. My nail place in DC was amazing and they gave you wine, mimosas, or champagne as you got your nails done so my expectations are high. Don't adjust your expectations because this is not that place. Ha! It's extremely quiet in there. No music or TV noise. At first I thought it was strange but now that I've been back twice I rather enjoy the quiet. I've had to wait a few minutes before one time I walked in (no appt) and they have an entire row of massage chairs to enjoy while you wait. They are also extremely reasonably priced and by reasonable I mean fantastic pricing. I was hesitant to come here because of the area but I was so pleasantly surprised to find out that they cost the same as another place I found a billion miles away. I get gel nails and their tools are clean and the extensive polish selection consisted of OPI, Essie, and Gelish. They did a great job with the manicure and timing. I'm pretty hard on my nails so I usually ask for 3 coats and it was no problem. All the technicians are extremely friendly and what I love the most is it appears that nearly every customer is a regular and greeted by name when they walk through the door. Fave. I've used to go to Jasmine regularly, liked the color choices there and most of the people were great, but one day a lady messed up my nail and blamed it on me. While she had been playing candy crush on her phone half of the time. The manager watched our interaction and said nothing, because she too was playing candy crush. I was through. So I began a long search around the Montrose/River Oaks area for nail salons with heartbreak after heartbreak until I found Vivian at River Oaks Nails and Spa. I went to this place because my regular nail salon is closed on Mondays and I really wanted to get a pedi. Place seemed clean and it was nice they take walk-ins. When I arrived 2 technicians were busy with clients. A younger technician took me for the pedi and I was not happy with the result. She rushed throughout the whole treatment. She did not have to do much to my nails since they were well maintained. She did not buff my feet at all even though I showed her couple of times where it needs more care. My pedi did not last more than a week and it is not even summer yet...While doing my pedi, technician was constantly chatting with the other technician, at times not looking at what she was doing, very uncomfortable.The pedicure which was taking place already at my arrival was still continuing when I was done and my nails were dried... Best part of my pedi was the chair since it was very comfortable and had several massage settings.Also the salon did not smell, always a positive! As for me, I will not be back, I don't like paying a "professional" just for myself to repeat the work in 2 days! read more

It's hard for me to write this review and not be able to give half stars. I truly want to be able to give them four stars but below you will find the reasons I cannot... Pros: no wait on a Thursday at 4:15 Quick greeting and friendly staff (Trish the owner was the original one to greet me) The woman who did my refill and shellac was very good at styling and doing my nails exactly as I had asked. She was a little older than some of the girls working and wore glasses. She was efficient and friendly. The girl who did my pedicure was kind and made sure to style my nails as requested. The spa pedicure has a nice peppermint feeling mask included that leaves your feet and legs feeling rejuvenated. They use sterile tools that are individually packaged and they use a tub liner for each new person getting a pedicure. Restroom is clean and public friendly. (Seems a lot of nail salon restrooms are cluttered with cleaning supplies and not very clean themselves, this one is just fine for customer usage) Cons: Prices. It's $30 for a regular refill, plus $15 more if you want shellac polish, plus $5 more if you'd like your cuticles tidied up. Polish selection: their selection of shellac polish and regular polish is a bit slim compared to most other salons I've been to in Houston. "Extras". There was not a drink offered or extra massage time or anything like that. No lap pillow or neck warmer or "extra" stuff like you will find in some other salons in the RO area. Overall design of the shop was lacking. There are basic chairs in the front to sit in and have someone roll to you for a more traditional pedicure and about 8 spa pedicure chairs in the back. There are a few nail desks in the front for ladies and men just getting their nails done no toes. Chatting. Constant chatting in Vietnamese between the ladies who work in the shop. Unfortunately, even though I usually don't mind this too much, today it seemingly annoyed my inner attempt at a peaceful experience. Tip. If tipping on your card, you have to verbally state your tip and the cashier will put it on your card instead of you signing for your tip. When checking out, I attempted to use a gift certificate given to me by a friend. It was for a regular mani/pedi. I had shown the certificate when I arrived and Trish told me I'd be able to upgrade my mani to a shellac refill and my pedi to a spa pedi. She showed me it would be $5 more mani with refill and $10 more for my pedi. When I checked out the girl charged me $50. I told her I didn't think that was right and I was told earlier it was $15 difference on top of my gift certificate. She didn't want to converse w me about it in English so the nice woman who did my refill came to explain that I was actually getting a discount because it would be $10 more for my pedi but it would be $15 more for refill than regular mani and then $15 for shellac polish and $5 for her to cut cuticle. I told her, we'll still that was $45 not $50 but that I had been explained up front about it being $15 more and then maybe the shellac I needed to pay more so I expected to pay around $30 more, not $50. So apparently a refill w shellac and a pedi would be $90 usually. I had to just sign my receipt for $$$ (with tip) and leave. I was fairly upset since paying that much pretty much voided the purpose of using my gift certificate. Overall, the gal that did my nails was kind and for now, they look good. I had to file a few in the car because they were uneven or not round. :/ I'm truly unsure what I think about returning to this shop. A very mixed review indeed. read more

Walked in on Monday right before 6:00. Even though they close at 7:00, they had no problem with my request for a shellac manicure and spa pedicure. I used to come here during mid 2014/mid 2015, the service was ok. some ladies did a good job, others a mediocre job. it was near home so i crossed the street. Last time was really bad ( 4 months ago), manicure and pedicure " the worst ever" they cut really bad my nails, almost didn't cut the cuticles, i have to ask several times please there still cuticles could you cut it? the polish bad too, missing paint parts. manicure last 3 days, pedi 1 week. it was a mess! so i decided ok, i have to find a better place for mani and pedi, i'm throwing the money away in this place. i did some research on yelp and went to a new place on waugh street! really great! read more

Another gem within walking distance of our house. The staff is so sweet, and the spa is spotless. It doesn't smell like acetone at all in there; I don't know how they do it. Just had my first appointment because I live across the street as a new address...They did a fantastic job.. Lynn was my manicurist and pedicurist. She did a fantastic job. Prices are very very reasonable for the area...Massage chairs, very up to standards of health and beauty. . I brought my own wine and poured it in a cup.. . Give me good, small, and down to earth business anytime.. It will be my regular salon for pedicures and manicures.. I was a walk in and my first visit... I only had 1 time the older lady cut my cuticles too short. Also, one time I forgot my wallet. They were nice enough to let me run home and come back to pay. Appreciate that! Overall, my pedicure was ok. $25 isn't bad for this part of town. My major complaint is that for some reason, my nail tech dug under the outer edge of my big toe nail REALLY hard with a sharp tool on both feet. I have never had an ingrown toenail, and there's no way I had that much toe jam under my nail. I've had several pedicures before, and no other nail tech has ever done this to me. I mean, she was really stabbing at it for several minutes for what felt like as hard as she could, and it blows my mind that she wouldn't think it was painful. I tolerated it for my left toe, but after gripping the chair and flinching so much on my right side, I had to tell her to stop. Furthermore, I questioned how sanitary that sharp tool was. Luckily I didn't have any open wounds after, but now I'm nervous about getting an infection. So much for a relaxing pedi. I'm not coming back. read more

This place is awful!! It is overpriced. The services are terrible. The pedicure chairs are old and dirty. They advertise them as massage chairs and most of them don't even work. They try to pressure you to get the "deluxe" services which are another $20/30 on top of the already overpriced fees, and if you don't, then they literally rush through your mani in less than 10 minutes and your pedi in about 25. No hand or foot massage is included in the mani/pedi and all of their nail polishes are old so the polish looks terrible. This place is really really mediocre. A complete waste of money. read more

Disappointed!!! The first time I visited this nail salon, I had a very pleasant experience; I was very happy with my pedicure. Unfortunately, the second visit was very disappointing. It was the most rushed pedicure I've ever had. The foot massage lasted approximately 1 minute for each foot and the pressure was very light. The woman that did the pedicure was very unfriendly and scowled during the whole appointment; she was even quite impatient at times. It appeared that she hated her job, but it is possible that she was having a bad day, which is why I will not name her. Had time to kill on my lunch break today and tried this place for the first time - definitely not impressed. Since it was noon on Monday I didn't have to wait at all, always a plus, since there was only 1 other woman getting her nails done. This would've been great, but then why was I so rushed?? Cuticles were barely cleaned (I actually had to point out a couple of hangnails that were bypassed), and I'm not even sure my manicurist's eyes were open while she was filing...I swear it was 1 stroke for each nail. To be fair, they have a great selection of polish...too bad my manicurist didn't even bother removing some fuzz from my nail before she painted over it with the nice color I chose. After a $17 basic manicure, I'm at home looking at my nails thinking I could've done this on my own. After 3 years of coming to this salon, on and off...trying so hard to be a regular but constantly disappointed, I am finally retiring their services. Although the aesthetic of the salon is clean and welcoming and the staff is reasonably friendly, their standard of service dramatically decreases every time I go in (once a week). I've brought in friends who agree....what is the RUSH? It seems like every time I'm there they are blowing through my mani/pedis, ignoring errors they make, over-clipping my cuticles, skimping on my leg/arm massage, and rushing me out of my chair to assist other patrons. For as much money as I pay week after week I'd rather spend it elsewhere. It is supposed to be a relaxing, refreshing experience and lately, they just can't get it right. My mom's toe nail came off and a girl there was able to make it look like nothing happened to it! I got a pedicure and LOVED it! My nails felt so clean! i had an awful and quite humiliating experience. The staff is rude and disrespectful. They are continuously talking negative about customers in their native language. While I was getting solar nails and a pedicure, i was treated very aggressively with the drill and wasn't able to relax. The nail tech even turned of my light massage on the chair so i wasn't able to enjoy the pedicure at all. i asked the nail tech to please be more careful but instead she ignored my request and began speaking loudly about me with the rest of the staff and was literally laughing in my face. I felt very uncomfortable and humiliated in front of the other customers there. i left with multiple cuts on my cuticles and a terrible set of nails. i wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. read more
