I don't often get sick, but when I do, I have a strategy. I'll ignore illness when it comes into my body, going out of my way to indulge in risky behaviors like not sleeping, starvation, and making snow angels naked. I like my coughs, colds, and influenzas to get nice and comfortable in my steaming little 98.6-degree internal jungle. Then, when they've finally settled in, I nuke the shit out of them. My arsenal is made up of four or five medicines taken in tandem shortly before I go to bed. Theraflu makes up the vanguard, flanked by NyQuil and Benadryl. I'll usually bring up the rear with some Robitussin and drop a couple of Aleves into the melee just to kill off any stragglers. My T cells, in jungle camo with faces stained with mud, materialize from the mist and wage war on the invading virus. The battle usually takes 16 hours, during which I am blissfully unconscious, sleeping off the overdose of medications. The last time I was sick was different. I don't know what it was, because I don't have health insurance, but I was losing the capacity for coherent thought at a surprisingly rapid rate. And so, as I was taking my first sips of the warm and lemony Theraflu, I hastily dumped two shots of brandy into the steaming liquid and used the mixture as a deliciously warm and heartily sour chaser for the other medications. What happened next is a little fuzzy--it reminded me of cold winter days, wandering around the Dickens Faire drunk off my ass, trying to affect a Cockney accent. Yelled across the store in the rudest way. No signs up, and multiple staff watched me walk around the store and said nothing, but he pops out of the box in the corner of the store when I checkout to yell in a totally rude and careless way. Rite Aid does what Rite Aid is supposed to do. They grant access to supplies that you may have forgotten, don't want to go to the grocery store for, light snackage and ice cream. Basically make-up, chips/salsa, sun block, medicine (there IS a pharmacy), drinks, and the ice cream (THRIFTY ICE CREAM IS THE BEST) Having worked at Magic Lamp for 10 months, there were many a day where I would run the two blocks to Rite Aid, buy my Chocolate Brownie Ice cream and my starbucks double shot energy drink and be on my way. I loved the staff, still love them when I go there. Always nice. Always willing to exchange a few sarcastic banters. It's what I live for. My favorite day must have been when I went there crying after work because I had a run-in with a dude that obviously made me upset. I went to the ice cream area, tears running down my face, trying to suck back the sobs and smile (which only makes you cry and feel more horrible) and utter the flavor of ice cream I wanted. The guy working gave me the biggest scoop I have ever seen and gave me the look of "you need it more than I do". I walked to the cash register, and gave them my dollar and whatever cents and walked the couple blocks down to the beach, where I sat in silence eating my ice cream. I love Rite Aid. The only bad part about this Rite Aid is that there always seems to be a Veteran with a sign, or a random dude in a wheel chair asking for money. I'm always like "sorry man, not today" and then walk out with my ice cream two minutes later. I feel crummy doing that, but that's life. I give to others with my time, not my money. But wait, time IS money. So it all works out. I'm from the suburbs of Chicago and for some reason was so struck by how friendly the people working here were. As I walked in I was greeted with a sincere and enthusiastic, "Hello! Welcome to Rite-Aid!" It made me happy. I was looking for an inflatable floating mat and they had just what I wanted. The person who checked me out was also friendly and as I left the original woman told me to have a great day. I really appreciated their friendliness, eye contact, and how sincere they seemed. Back when there were drugstores called "Thrifty," my grandma would often take my brother and I for ice cream after a day of errand-running or frolicking at the beach. I was rainbow sherbet, my grandma was pistachio, my brother was rocky road. I had my first Thrifty ice cream cone in maybe 20 years yesterday (rainbow sherbet, natch) and was transported. I live down the street from Rite Aid and come here quite often. The cashiers and the ice cream guys are usually friendly, but the photo people take forever to recognize that you are standing there and needing assistance. When the photo people do help you, they act like they don't want to be there. This Rite Aid carries pretty much everything I need when I run out of an item and don't want to go to the grocery store. I regularly grab trash bags, toothpaste, deodarant, snacks, drinks, advil, etc.Everything is always in stock and usually fairly priced. If you're going for Holiday candy (Christmas, Halloween, Easter, Valentine's) they usually run out really early so be sure to go several weeks before the actual holiday. I made this mistake last Valentine's Day and had to drive over to the grocery store afterwards. read more

While waiting to get my hair cut at Shear Pleasure, I limped down the street to Rite Aid to buy myself an ankle brace for my stupid sprained ankle. They had quite a selection, AND when I bought one that turned out to be too small (discovered as I tried it out on the bus bench across the street), it was no problem at all to exchange it. The clerk couldn't have been nicer about it, and on my original visit, had very sweetly tried to talk me into getting an ice cream cone (damned lactose intolerance! How I longed for a scoop of chocolate malted crunch!). My original cashier had also been really nice, and wasn't irritated when I made an airhead move. Small no-brand bottles of water were 50 cents. The store was clean and the shelves well-stocked. Other than the totally inconvenient location, I'd go back. read more

When you walk into this Rite Aid, you might have a great experience, or you might not. It all depends on who's working there and how you look. The employees here are extremely judgmental. It doesn't matter how much money you spend, how kind or polite you are, all they care about it how you look. For the most part I like this Rite Aid: my one complaint is the lack of beer. I don't expect a drug store to always have my booze fix, but after other Rite Aid experiences I've come to expect a certain level of intoxication upon leaving. Rite Aid has the last good ice cream in a time where trendy frozen yogurt and places like Cold Stone have taken over the market. Rite Aid, formerly known as Thrifty, has a special place in my heart...I used to walk to Thrifty with my great grandma and she would treat me and my brother to an ice cream cone. I don't remember how much it cost back then but is was less than $0.50. Even though the name of the store has changed, their good old fashioned ice cream remains the same. And it is the only place I know of in 2007 that you can get a cone for under a buck--$0.99. The hardest part about going to Rite Aid for ice cream is choosing between the Chocolate Malted Crunch, Mint n Chip and Strawberry. Or I could just get all three. read more

This location is not too far from my mom's house so when I'm in the neighborhood I stop in. I can literally spend an hour in here looking at all of the products. They have every drugstore cosmetic, hair product and snack that exists! Prices are not the cheapest but if something is on sale you can get items for a decent price. They have a good selection of food, liquor and hygiene items too. It's pretty much a mini-grocery store. read more
