Chocolate malt crunch...yum! Love Thrifty ice cream
Tanya L.

Service was awesome. Clean store alway a summer night treat to visit and get a scoop of ice cream Chocolate malt ice cream is my favorite.

Colossal scoop for $4.49

"Did you save room for dessert?" Yes, and I'm going to save $8 by going to Rite Aid for it. So glad this exists on 2nd St, so we can have good ole Thrifty ice cream after a not-so-thrifty meal. Their "single" scoops are double scoops in disguise, and their colossal is "three" (more like 5-6) very generous scoops on a waffle cone. I recommend sharing any size and asking for an extra cup and spoons.

Rite Aid pharmacy hold...
Dan D.

So, as I'm writing, I have been on hold at Rite Aid pharmacy for 43 minutes, after calling 5 previous times and being on hold between 2 and 24 minutes, before being hung up on. That confirms that this is not a fully automated system where the computer hangs up on you after a prescribed time, but rather a "person" does, on the other end. The last time I had to pick up a prescription, I went through the same thing, so I called back to speak with the store "manager", who was probably just a cashier up front. He said that, because of Covid, the pharmacy was just too busy. So I called back, and after waiting on hold again for 30 minutes, I decided to actually visit the pharmacy, while on hold. As I walked right up to the desk, which had no one in line, I asked why the pharmacy wasn't taking any calls. She said "we were probably too busy earlier", so I showed her my phone, which showed Rite Aid pharmacy with a hold time of 46 minutes and counting.

It certainly is!

We discovered last year (yeah...took us a while) that they have an ice cream parlour inside of it, serving hand-scooped Thrifty-brand ice cream for a really, really value price. Well...due to a plumbing issue, it's been closed for months now...but we stopped by yesterday, and it's baaack. The counter is located right in front, left of the registers. Since there is usually nobody there and it's no different at Rite-Aid to find someone to help you, the right move is to stand-in line at the register and pay first. They will then call somebody over to help. It's $1.99 for one scoop in a cake or sugar cone, and they have a great selection of interesting flavors. I get the mocha almond fudge or rocky road, while other interesting flavors are coconut pinapple, medieval madness. It's scooped using a unique cylinder ice cream scoop, and they are very generous with the portion (one scoop is plenty...some staff will choose to give 2 smaller scoops to make the one 'scoop'). The ice cream is probably a bit below average in terms of taste and creaminess for a gourmet ice cream (reminded me of the ice cream you can serve yourself in a chinese buffet), but it's $1.99, folks. One can't beat the experience of walking back to your home on a hot, sunny SoCal afternoon, trying to lick the ice cream in the right places at the right times so it doesn't melt all over your hands. Ice cream trucks/carts don't seem to serve hand-dipped ice cream anymore, so this experience really reminds me of an earlier time. Now only if I could find a walkable Rite-Aid near one of our favorite beaches...

This store is located on a very busy corner, given that the transportation hub for the rail as well as buses are just block down south. I can only imagine what the traffic here must be in the mornings on a weekend. Typical convenience store with lots of cold drink options, snacks, and slurpees. The one thing I didn't like were the substantial number of homeless and crackheads hanging out in front of the entryway. However, given it was a holiday weekend, Long Beach PD were not messing around. They were out in full force: foot, autos, bicycles, and even on little carts manning the blocks around the shoreline. They took care of one obviously mentally disturbed since he was yelling at passerby and being hostile. Lines here get long so be prepared to wait.
