We were treated quite terribly this evening at the restaurant. To summarize, and then I'll provide more details, the food was so-so, the service was laughable, and the owner was a bit of a nightmare.
Someone had recommended that we go to Ripa 12. We were very excited since it was just around the corner from where we are staying. The prices were high, but we figured it would be worth it.
We came in after walking around for over 12 hours outside, on a 50 degree (F) day. By the time of our arrival it was even cooler outside. The front portion of the restaurant was nearly empty, except for a couple sitting at a 2 top. The waitress offered a table next to the door. I asked if there was anything else since it was cold. She pointed to a large table for 6, one that could be broken down into 2 2-tops or 1 2-top and 1 4-top. We agreed to the table and sat down.
The owner of the restaurant, a heavy set short man, came to us, telling us to move to the table by the door in case he gets a big party. Please note that this table was a 5-top. Shortly after he said this, 2 more sets of couples came in, one sitting at the 5-too by the door and the other sitting a booth (a booth that we, mind you, were not offered, and sits 4 people).
The owner continued to insist that we move. I explained that i would be too cold. He told me that the restaurant is fine and i wouldn't be cold. I was cold throughout the entire meal because people continued to come in and out of the restaurant, and while we weren't next to the door, we were still close.
Finally, after about 20 mins or so, he comes over to take our order. I was prepared to walk out, but thought i should give this restaurant a second chance.
We ordered bucatini pasta, the grilled tuna, and the lamb. The pasta was okay, not much better than i would make in my own kitchen, to be perfectly honest. The tuna looked and tasted bland and boring. The lamb was mainly bones and fat, was overocoked, and barely had any flavor. The potatoes were oddly soaked in olive oil. The food was not very good. The pizza joint across the street is a much better dining experience all around. Check that out inside.
Anyway, the humiliation happened when the owner proceeded to speak poorly about myself and my husband to 2 different tables. Shortly after we had ordered, a 3-too came in, and he yelled to the waitress, "Vedi!", implying that he was correct that we should not sit where we were comfortable sitting. He then proceeded to speak poorly about us, in Italian, to this table and then again to another table of 4. Little did he know that, while i don't speak much Italian, i understand quite a bit. I also understand body language, and if you are using hand gestures and eye movements to indicate to a table that you are speaking poorly of us, then the table turns over to look at us, you, sir, are truly awful at customer service. I've spent too many years in the customer service industry to sit back and agree with this type of treatment from a restaurant owner. When the table of 4 walked in, they had suggested a very simple solution: pulling the 4-top separate from our 2-top, so they could enjoy their meal, and we could pretend to enjoy our's. It seemed to work out nicely for them.
As you can tell, i do not recommend this restaurant, nor will i be returning. read more
