This was one of the upscale fine dining restaurants that we went to in Rome. As soon as I walked into the restaurant, it had elegant decors with dim lighting and a quiet atmosphere with soft music playing in the background. We ordered sea bass fillet rolled in zucchini and honey mushrooms. Fish was tender, soft, and delicious with great seasoning. We also ordered Ravioli with white truffles and it was delicious as well. Ravioli tasted like it was freshly made and it tasted great with truffles. Lastly, we got tiramisu for dessert. This tiramisu was prepared by an artist. Just by looking at the dish, it was very pretty to look at. It was presented on a beautiful plate with thin chocolate cookie on top with sugar decoration and underneath was a creamy white tiramisu. I loved this dish because it was unique dessert with great sweet flavor and great presentation. The service was excellent. Everyone was friendly with great attitude and they are attentive. My husband and I arrived in Rome on a Thursday afternoon from Wisconsin, and our first dinner experience was at Ristorante Ad Hoc. We opted for the Roman-style cuisine tasting menu with wine pairings. The service was warm and welcoming, and the ambiance was quiet and romantic. I appreciated the decor, especially the various wine bottles displayed throughout, and I also liked the dishes the food was served on. That said, this restaurant leaned a little too "foodie" for my taste. I also discovered that I really dislike truffles! My husband, on the other hand, enjoyed everything--including my leftovers. When our friends go to Rome, we tell them that they MUST stop at Ad Hoc. The owner, Massimiliano Laganà, has been at this for so many years with his food, service and decor, and he's figured out the formula. First the food ! On this occasion, I had the Fish Tasting Menu and my wife had the Truffle Tasting Menu. We chose two different menus so that we could try more dishes. My wife and I are pescatarians, so the restaurant had to make some fish substitutions for two of the courses, which they gladly did. My wife had the wine pairing and I had a cocktail. I'm going to spare you the gory description of how amazing the food is, other than to say that I can't name a favorite because I loved everything, and "it's not just food....it's art." Again....best tasting menu I've ever had! Now the service! The servers treat you like you're dining in their homes. They are laser focused on ensuring that the meal is more than food....that it is an experience. The servers will do whatever it takes to accommodate your needs. Lastly, the decor! It is everything you ever imagined a dinner in a beautiful plaza in Rome could be. We were treated like family and taken care of like Royalty. The women that cared for us were just amazing. Bringing us complimentary wine, starters, pallet cleansers, and deserts. We were there 3 hours and it felt like one. We were pampered and impressed the whole time. The food...oh the food. It's been a couple months since we ate at Ad Hoc, but wanted to write a review on my experience. I have to say this was one of the finest dining experiences I've ever had (and I'm quite old). The wine cellar ambiance was comforting, with just the right volume of background music, open air chef station and eloquent bar. I walked in expecting Italian food. What I got was a culinary hostage situation. The ambiance? Imagine an Olive Garden got into a bar fight with a DMV waiting room and then lost. The waiter, who looked like he had just returned from a failed audition to be the human embodiment of a hangover, greeted us with all the enthusiasm of a sloth on Benadryl. A kid dropped his gelato. Time stopped. (How can you justify making a poor kid drop his gelato??) Food was straight dogshit, too. I don't know if I can heap enough praise on this place in one review, but I'm going to try. I wanted to treat my family to a nice dinner while in Rome as a thank you for the trip and I found this place randomly searching for restaurants close to our hotel. This came up with glowing reviews and the menu looked perfect, so I made an advance reservation online. The glowing reviews are all legit. In fact, they aren't glowing enough. Three of us had tasting menus with wine pairings, one ordered a la carte. We were initially presented with the truffles that would become part of our dinner. Two of us opted for the black truffle tasting, one had sea. The truffles were something I've often wondered about and was delighted to try them this way. Each of our four courses were not only spectacularly delicious, but so beautifully presented. No detail overlooked. And I can't neglect to mention the OUTSTANDING service we received. If I could give it 10 stars I would. Everything about this restaurant is amazing! They start by pouring a glass of rose while explaining the menu, which is excellent. They have numerous tasting menus in addition to the ala carte menu. Starting by bringing a fried bread appetizer along with bread and oil. I really was excited to try the truffle tasting menu here. They really did heap tons of food on us, and sent us home with a little bottle of olive oil, but sometimes less is more. The two main meat dishes were both incredibly dry and hard to eat, and the dessert was honestly some of the worst dessert I've had. Ad Hoc in Rome does it again!. It remains our favorite high-end restaurant in the world. This includes food, service, and ambiance. We have travelled to over 40 countries in our 74 years and have dined at restaurants like The French Laundry, Per Se, and the original Le Cirque many times, but Ad Hoc remains our favorite every time we dine there on our annual trips to Italy. Dining in a relatively small but not crowded room surrounded by walls of wine, with service that is always there when needed but is not overbearing. The service personnel are all expertly informed and always accurate with their descriptions of both food and wine. We love the food, which is always well prepared and not in the same old ways that we can get in lesser restaurants. There are a lot of creative dishes on the menu. If you like truffles, you must review the truffle menu (my wife's favorite). We have been raving about this place to our friends ever since we got back from Italy three months ago. I wish I could go back. Ad Hoc has many menus from which you can choose from to meet your cravings and budget. We wanted to try the truffles because this menu was highly rated on yelp and had been personally recommended by a friend. There was an optional wine pairing and we decided to go with that as well because when in Rome... Unfortunately the white truffle was not available but the black truffle was. We wanted to try the black one anyway because it was a more comfortable price point on a meal we would already be splurging on. I have to tell you that EVERYTHING was excellent. Even the bread they served at the beginning of the meal was special. The service was excellent as well. Our meal took a while but they never rushed us and in fact the food came out at a nice pace. Our waitress explained all the dishes and wine pairings to us as they were served. She even brought out the truffles they would be using! This place is truffle GALORE! I have never enjoyed so much truffle at one time prior to trying this place out. And when I say truffle, I mean the good stuff. They bring them out in full for you to actually smell before they serve them. We booked in advance from the US and our table was ready for us by the time we arrived. During our 2 week stay in Italy, this was easily the best dining experience we had! My wife had read about Ad Hoc on a blog that described their truffle dishes and when we looked at the website, we saw lots of different food options as well as an extensive wine list. There were 5 of us in our group with relatively diverse palates, but everyone loved their food! We all ordered a different tasting menu with wine pairing and every course was anywhere from very good to downright delicious! The atmosphere was perfect and cozy. The service was impeccable. Not only did it seem like every server working assist in our service, they all did with lots of enthusiasm, friendliness and fun! The sommelier did a fantastic job of explaining everyone's food and wine pairings! She was very knowledgeable without being pretentious. Lastly they knew were there to celebrate our recent marriage and made a point to be congratulating but also enjoyed having a bit of fun at my (the groom's) expense which I loved. If you find yourself in Rome do make a point of making a reservation! For a high end and intimate experience I recommend a seat inside but the outdoor tables are perfect for some wine and appetizers or a more casual dining experience. I have to say that I was disappointed in my visit to Ad Hoc. While the location and decor were great I found the service to be terrible, in fact the service made the food a disappointment as well. It started with the 40 minute wait in between sitting down and a staff member our order for food or drinks. Our waitress seemed disappointed we didn't want to do the tasting menu, but we were already disappointed with the way the meal had started. It took another 30 minutes for our first glass of wine and burrata appetizer to arrive at the table. The burrata with the upgrade of white truffle. This dish was around $50, and when it arrived a small fly landed on it... No big deal it happens. When the waitress and I tried to get it off it was killed on the cheese. She asked if we wanted a new one... um, of course I said. Now after waiting 30 minutes for the dish to arrive at our table a "new one" was brought out in less than 5 minutes. I'm not sure that the 2nd burrata was new and that they threw away the original dish, given how expensive white truffles are, but it should have been. The 3 way carbonara came out practically cold too. No one ever came to see if we wanted another drink until the end of our meal. When we ordered wine glasses were just brought over a glass, no wine was ever presented to the table as with other restaurants in this price range. Some staff apologized at one point saying the service issues were because they were busy, I'm not sure how that was my problem. They hold themselves out as a fine dining experience and at least mine was far, far from that. I would tell you to ignore the inflated reviews and look for something better. read more

Once again they said they were booked for the night but called back minutes later that there was a cancellation. We were seated next to the window. It definitely added to the ambience. We both did the pairing. Just writing this is making my mouth water, the food was exquisite. The tartar was my favorite but everything was so delicious. One of the best fine-dining experiences I have had in Italy. The ambiance is romantic and relaxing. Beautiful music in the background together with a remarkable collection of wines decorated on both sides of the room. The service is excellent. Our waitress gave us a warm welcome when we arrived and placed us in a nice seat close to the window. During the entire course, they were attentive and patient. They also pay additional attention to details. Our server helped us clean some bread crumbs before placing the main dish. Food was very delicious and even looked artistic. We ordered the Ad Hoc seafood appetizer. It consisted of three different items. Small bites (but the right size for us) and every single one made us nod our heads. We also ordered the beef cheek and suckling pig, and they were so yummy. We initially did not order the dish with truffle (which we later realized to be a big mistake), but the chef accidentally still added truffle to the suckling pig (the restaurant did not charge us for it but we were so impressed by the flavor that we decided to leave a tip). The truffle escalated the taste of the dish to a completely different level, and we were left to regret not trying their white truffle and truffle tasting course (but will do it when we visit Rome next time). read more
