I needed some help with my Harvey Sliding Glass door handle assy. I not only got what I needed but Joe G helped me all the way to the point he actually went above and beyond to help me. Now my door is older and the hardware is pretty much custom to the door. Joe called Harvey and got me the exact replacement that no one AND I MEAN NO ONE could find. He won me over just with that his patience in dealing with me was outstanding. No one can deal with me but Rings End just won a lifelong customer just by the way they helped me and were bound and determined to help anyway possible and they did. Customer service was poor. I asked for help figuring out how to replace a screen door. The service desk staff gave me 50 reasons why they would not/could not be able to help me find the door, rather than trying to help me find a solution. They were antagonistic and rude. read more

When I heard a large hardware store chain was coming to Branford, I thought "Oh good, this is the shoreline's answer to not having a Home Depot east of the Quinnipiac River." You see, the shoreline towns have always had small mom & pop stores such as Pages in Guilford and Goody's in East Haven, but for a long time they lacked big box stores such as Lowes or Home Depot. Home Depot in East Haven only opened around the same time as this Ring's End. I remember when Rings End was built. It took about a whole year and it was really impressive in design. Again, I thought, oh boy, this the store that the shoreline has been waiting for. Well, they've been in business for about 5 years and I still find myself going to the small mom & pop shops and Home Depots just like I used to. I don't go to Ring's End for two reasons: 1) their prices are usually 20% higher than their competitors and 2) their selection is very limited. I'm speaking as a do-it-yourself (DIY) home owner here. Maybe this store is terrific for contractors, but I can't speak for them. Regarding high prices, maybe that should be of no surprise, after seeing Rings End's impressive exterior and interior. The place just looks "too" nice. If that makes any sense. It's impressive, but with being impressive comes cost, and with cost comes overhead. Their overhead must be higher than their competitors. Hence their higher prices. Even the staff is too "nice"; they seem way too polished to being working in the hardware/lumber industry. After looking at the products they sell and after looking at the showroom floor, it's pretty clear who their intended customers are. They're in the business of selling higher end stuff to slightly affluent customers. But I dislike that business model. Is that what the shoreline really needs? Ring's End is from Darien, Connecticut. Maybe that business model works perfectly well down in Fairfield County where many people have fulltime butlers and handymen, but this is Branford Connecticut. We have DIY'ers like myself here. If I'm looking for answers by a knowledgeable staff, I'll see the old guy (I forget his name) in the back of Pages Hardware or several of the guys at Goody's. And if I want the absolute lowest price for anything, I'll make the trek over to Homes Depot or Lowes. Actually, the prices at the small mom & pop stores aren't bad because they're usually affiliated with a True Value or Ace Hardware. And lastly, if I want good quality lumber, I'll go to Landon Lumber in Madison. PS: This past weekend, I purchased a set of folding stairs for my attic. Ring's End Lumber price: $145. Same product at Home Depot: $119. I don't need to tell you who got my business. Double PS: Recently I compared 20 hardware pieces at Home Depot and Rings End prices were 30% higher for every single one (and yes, they were the same exact product. No different. I know this particular product line very well because I used to manage it & source it from China in my previous career). read more

For a recent tool purchase, I opted to use Rings End over the local big box stores. The cost was slightly more but I wanted to favor the local business. Apparently, they don't sell many power tools at Rings End because what I was given were open box and floor models. When I questioned this, I was given a meaningless answer. In summary, my future purchases will be at Lowes or Home Depot. read more

He also helps me when I am suck, as I am remodeling a place for the first time by myself. I thought paint choices were going to be the worst and it was quick & fun. Rings End has a lot of materials that Home depot does not have. Like I would buy an electrical cord at Home Depot and not at Rings End. I buy wood from Rings End and not from Home Depot. yes the prices are higher than Home depot but the materials are better. just my 2 cents worth read more

Been here a few times for small construction/wood items. Came in over the weekend to look at kitchen cabinets for a remodel, expecting to spend $9-12K, and was ignored. Walked around for 20 minutes, a few store employees saw me but were with other customers and didn't speak to me. I finally went to the front desk and said I work long hours during the week, said I needed to talk to someone today and asked when someone would be able to help me - I could wait. I was told by cashier "I work long hours too" and that I should leave my info for a call-back on Monday. read more

My favorite lumber yard in CT. They have a huge selection of lumber, trims, molding, and paints. All material is top notch. All lumber is straight and flat. Moldings are free of nicks and dings. They stock almost everything you need and if they don't have it, they can usually get it in a few days. Its a further drive from my house than Home Depot or Lowes, but the quality of the product makes up for the additional drive. You don't have to spend time rifling through piles of studs to find the straight ones like at HD or Lowes. In addition they have a Source Book that lists all the materials they stock, so you can order over the phone for delivery, which is convenient. I ordered 36 Anderson windows last year and they came in on time and in perfect condition. I have recommended this Ring's End to other family members and they are equally impressed. read more

I discovered this gem of a store at 10 minutes from my home. I am the kind of person who try to give work locally. I like having a personal relationship with a staff that knows you and recognize your needs and furthermore is knowledgeable. I am ready to pay a little more and escape from Home Depot and other like treating their employees so poorly. I went recently for Architectural Hardware and Nancy head of it was so helpful, so patient facing my hesitations that from now it will be one on my preferred local store. read more

Ring's End carries better quality products than I typically find at a box store such as Home Depot. The layout is nice, and it has very good displays for when you are trying to get ideas. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. I am a serious DIY'er, the box stores often have staff that doesn't know how to do things, and have on occasion given me the wrong information, and sold me the wrong product. I don't run into that problem at specialty lumber, hardware stores, such as Ring's. Sure, there are items I will buy at Lowe's or Home Depot, but when I am looking for specific higher end products, that need to have longevity, I will buy them at Ring's. The money I save from not paying for labor, makes up the difference and allows me to buy better quality products. read more

Obviously Joe from New Haven does not build professionally. Try to buy a framing member over 16' at Lowes or Home Depot....you can't....they don't sell them. If your framing a garden shed Lowes will do. If your framing a house and you need a 2x12x20 valley rafter...a pro goes to Rings' End. Lastly your paying a salary with your purchases to someone who has the knowledge, experience and understands the building trade. Someone who understands the difference per say from a Larson storm door vs. American Craftsmen. Or someone who can source 28' of wooden gutter. Last time I went to Home Depot they did not sell wooden gutter, .032 copper or hardware quantities over 5#. However the associate at Home Depot was able to tell me where the rest rooms were. read more
