I called first to ask some questions, and the staffer who answered was cheerful and knowledgeable - even though I could hear they were busy in the background. I've been in the store now multiple times, and just purchased my new mountain bike from them. I have to admit it, I can be a challenging customer, since I changed my mind about an order a few times - Dillon helped me out and never showed anything but politeness and respect. Mike the mechanic (ha- not the musician), is really knowledgeable and has be patient with my technical questions - usually bike mechanics are sort of curmudgeonly but not in this case. A lot of bike shops are staffed by knucklehead college kids who don't know or care much about bikes. Ride Cyclery is owned and staffed by knowledgable riders, triathletes, and racers. They know their stuff and can help you out with anything from a casual beach cruiser to a high-end race bike. I am 6' 6" and have never had a bike that fit me properly. They fit me with a mid-priced road bike and I love it. read more

Went to Basic Bike Maintenance Clinic on Monday and completely impressed with level of knowledge and service. These guys know their stuff, but explained it simply and clearly, to a beginner who has irrational anxiety over bike mechanics. General Manager Blaize spent quite a bit of time with me changing flats on the back wheel of my tri bike. Won't forget what he said about getting a flat during an Ironman "Relax, take your time and eat a sandwich." I will be referring friends at all levels to RIDE from here on out. read more

The owner, Brent, has created a shop that is able to satisfy a range of customers - from those looking for a fun beach cruiser to to active racers looking for a high-end bike. They have a good selection of parts/accessories and Brent has always been willing to order what they don't have in stock yet. I've always received great customer service (unlike other nearby bike shops) and have been very pleased with the quality of work their mechanics have done on my bikes. I have Electra cruiser purchased from the shop and previous owners. I decided to take my wife there for a birthday present cruiser. Matty helped us out and was very patient, friendly and knowledgeable. After about 1 hour and a short walk-about she was able to pick out the bike most like her and what a great deal. I was riding by after an errand and needed a saddlebag and saw the shop. I walked in and was greeted right away (which is awesome for as busy as they were). Don't know the guys' name (sorry) but he actually helped me get an accessory package that fit my economic and bike needs. I proceeded to put the stuff together and my brain was just not with it. Kinda funny, i asked to borrow a tool and he said "you just got them in the set". Duh!! He helped me with the bag and placement of the pump. I got a pump, bag, tools and a patch kit for under $30. I had seen bags alone elsewhere at $30. So then, I was told that if I ride at night without lights I could get a ticket. Unaware, I was appreciative and checked out the selection of lights. I picked up a front and back light for $20. AND the batteries were included. I also observed him speaking to a gentleman looking for a bike. He was very informative but NO high pressure sales pitch and super nice. Once I'm ready for a road bike I will definitely be back. Thanks guys for all your help today!! read more

Our bike rental at Ride Cyclery was great! The online reservation process was very easy--I was surprised to be able to actually choose the bike and frame size. I don't think it could have been any easier. The bikes were in perfect condition, and were also checked out again in the shop when we came in for fitting. Quality bikes, good components, and well-maintained. Staff, especially Rochelle, was friendly, helpful, and took the time to make sure we would really enjoy our ride. We came in the day before the ride to fit the bikes, swap pedals, and confirm details of the ride. Rochelle was great, taking the time to describe in detail the different options for Saturday morning rides, and helped us decide to ride up the coast. Some stop and go for the first few miles, but less traffic and more polite drivers than we expected. Good bike lanes for the most part, and good roads. We hit Camp Pendleton and flew on open roads and rollers--best part of the ride. We rode north to San Juan Capistrano, found our favorite taco place from 17 years ago when we lived there as newlyweds, took the Amtrak back to Oceanside, then rode back to the shop. I wish I could leave NO stars! I had the worst experience ever! The owner is very rude and argumentative, he goes by the saying "the owner is always right and the customer is always wrong". The owner definitely needs a lesson in basic customer service. I bought a brand new expensive italian bike from them and have had issues from the get go. The owner even argues with people on this site about him having to charge labor for 2 min. fixes like changing a seatpost. Well I know your not a charity but don't you think me spending $3500 on a bike would be enough for you to not charge me $15 bucks labor for swtiching seats? Definitely letting my bike club and all riders alike know they need to stay away from your shop! read more

Terrific shop! I made a mistake purchasing my bike from another shop, and they fixed me up with no problem, to include a great deal on some new wheels. Brent and his staff are engaged and extremely knowledgeable, and I've always been impressed with their level of professionalism. They have a great stock of high end equipment. I know longer live in California, but when I've been back they've done a terrific job hooking me up with a high end rental so I can ride the great roads in the area. There's no better place for cycling in San Diego. These people have a true passion for cycling, and it's well worth a visit. read more

I give this business one star because the employes are nice, but the owner is not. Be-careful when doing business here! If there is ever a problem do not expect any help from the owner. The owner is not responsible and does not make good on his word. He basically stole 120 dollars. He would not honor a gift card that was purchased at his shop. He promised to research why the card that was not honored and never called back. When talking to him on the phone (I called him) he was rude, vocal, and uncaring. even at that point he said he would call back and still I have not heard anything. There are much better shops out there I would just keep riding past this one. read more

Clearly, the customer is never right at RIDE Cyclery. I called to order my new $3000 bike. I had to remind them to order pedals. It took almost 2 weeks to ship and I had to keep calling until the bike was in. I was told unless I spent $6000 on a bike, I would not get a proper bike fit- only a seat adjustment. I did get a seat adjustment- but it was 1.5 inches off. (I went elsewhere to get bike fit.) The store also forgot to give me my cleats for my new pedals. On my 2nd trip to Carlsbad store, I had them put the new cleats on. They were put on incorrectly. I went back the 3rd time to the Encinitas store as my bike was unridable due to pedal issues (I had 3 of my male cyclist friends try to clip in and adjust cleats to no avail). I could have been seriously hurt if I was a novice rider. Brent the owner said Speedplay Zeros were mostly for men... And that I should stick with my current pedals. I had to ask for the price adjustment for the pedals. I have purchased 2 other bikes previously- one from Trek and one from Nytro - both stores did a bike fit. I was told that the Carlsbad store is new and they did not have a bike trainer in order to do bike fit. The Carlsbad store is not new and how could the store owner not know there wasn't a bike trainer to do bike fit!?? I was told they would send me something for my troubles. Still waiting... read more

I was biking with my family through Encinitas and got a flat so we stopped at RIDE Cyclery to get a new tube...we bought a new tube from Mike at RIDE Cyclery...the tube didn't quite fit my bike so I took it back to him. I told him that it didn't fit and that I'd like another one. He pretty much told me that I did not know how to change out a tube on my bike. He proceeded to talk down to me in front of the other customers/staff as if I was clueless about bikes. I think he behaved like that because I was a woman and thought that I did not know what I was doing. This is not the first or last time that I've changed a tube. I did not appreciate being spoken to in that tone or manner. I'm not sure what his position in that bike shop is but I will never set foot again in that shop! read more

The funny thing about living in a small community like Encinitas is that most people know each other in some way shape or form, and word travels .... especially with digital, and viral platforms like Yelp -- As I read the reviews of Rude, I mean, Ride Cyclery I quickly realized that not only did others have the same experience as my girlfriend and I had, but, one of the reviewers is actually a good friend of ours, Cory H. She expressed severe disappointment about the LACK of customer service she and her friends were given when going into Ride for what could have been a very quick and simple service, of which, would have resulted in future sales, etc.. The feeling could not be more mutual! A bicycle shop in small, beachy (and visitor serving) community like Encinitas would be wise to provide service with a smile to ALL customers, not just those who are die hard cyclists. This is because, people will ALWAYS return to a support a business IF AND ONLY IF the service was worthy. Am I mistaken in believing that a bicycle shop should promote bicycling equally - regardless of the bicycle rider or bike itself? Brent G -- I am not sure who you are, but your response to potential customer(s) whom will NEVER return ever was truly unbelievable. Wow. All I can say you are lucky there are wealthy Encinitans to support your horrible business. We shop local, small business in every way that we can - and LUCKILY for us, we found a customer service-focused bicycle shop in Clairemont called Q Bikes. Although we were both raised, live, work and play in Encintas, we will GLADLY drive 30 minutes away to support their store (in business for 40+ years, hmm, wonder why!) over Ride, and will do our best to spread the word. I wanted to get into cycling and I didn't know really anything about it so I went to various shops and did some research online about bikes. When I stopped by Ride Cyclery to check out a couple bikes I was greeted by an employee that was very kind and knowledgeable about everything pertaining to bikes. He helped me narrow down which bikes would work for me. They also educated me on basically everything related to cycling. I was so impressed with the customer service that I ended up buying a bike. I read the negative reviews... man, am I glad I am not in the retail business. I had my bottom bracket come loose so I limped back to ask Ride to tighten it up. I am not a racer or a regular - just someone who needed some help. It was early Saturday morning with 30 folks in the shop getting ready for the Swami's ride. Despite how busy they were, the OWNER stopped everything he was doing and spent a good 20 min. to find the right tool to fix my bike. When I asked the charge - he waived me away. He could easily have asked me to wait AND charged me fairly. A shop worthy of my business. read more

Alright... so bike shops are a tough thing. Everybody wants PERFECTION out of their bike shop, and when they don't get what they want, the shop gets a bad rap. From my experience what's most important in a bike shop is that they treat you well, don't lie to you, and work fine craftsmanship. I can not say enough amazing things about my experience at Ride! I had spent the day looking for an Electra beach cruiser. I went to a couple of bike shops in Oceanside. One which was terrible (Alan's) and one which was ok with super nice help, but just didn't have a bike I wanted. Then... I ended up at Ride. First of all, I'm not a cyclist. Im a beach cruiser...literally. It could have been very intimidating as when I walked in, I was surrounded by high end road bikes and people that were clearly serious about riding. Yet the moment I walked in I was greeted by the nicest sales girl named Cynthia. She listened to what I was looking for and then walked me in the back and stayed there in a helpful way and answered every question I had, which, might I add, was a lot. I chose an electra beach cruiser and then wanted to customize the fenders, grips, seat and a couple other things. The other two gentleman that were in the shop were available and also so nice. They were able to modify my new bike right then and there and 20 minutes later I left with a fully customized, absolutely adorable Electra beach cruiser! In return, Ride Cyclery now has a new customer for life who is happy to tell everyone who asks what a great experience I had. If you are looking for a true family atmosphere this is the bike shop for you. The employees are continually greeting people by name every time I am in there and they make new customers (which I was) feel like this is already their bike shop. I recently purchased a Tri-Bike from Ride Cyclery because the price was super cheap and their staff made sure I was not test riding bikes that did not fit my body shape. I just bought a new bike at Ride Cyclery. I have had a total of 10 knee surgeries and my right leg is completely reconstructed and very different from my left in addition I have upper back and shoulder issues. DeeAnn from Ride did my personal fitting and it was amazing! Her knowledge and expertise (not to mention her patience with all my issues) was exactly what I needed.
