When I was a kid, I was really into cars. I had a subscription to Road and Track magazine and every month when I got my new subscription in the mail, I would pour through the pages, cover to cover learning as much as I could about what waited for me inside. The Ferraris though...MAN I couldn't take my eyes off of them. Every time a Ferrari was featured I would memorize the specifications of each car simply out of fascination for them. I got a chance to visit a Ferrari dealership when I was about 10 and after walking around trying to get as close to the cars and see them in person, the one thing I left that dealership knowing was that every person made sure I knew that I didn't belong there. It was a private club in which I was not welcomed. As a 10 year old it stung, but hey...I was 10...I would get over it, right? Fast forward to me now and it's strange that I'm now a Porsche guy and don't care for Ferraris...isn't it? I digress- my point is that experiences can shape you and form your opinions about brands and the people who represent them. And what's also interesting is that I really hadn't had an experience like my Ferrari visit for nearly 35 years...that is until I walked into Cadence Cyclery waiting for my sandwich to be made by the deli next door. I've ridden road for about 17 years, and mountain for almost twice as long. I LOVE bikes...I used to be a bike mechanic...I've taught my son how to work on bikes. I always love a chance to pop in to a local shop and see what's new and what gear people are using. Yeah, I can see reels all day long on Insta but sometimes it's nice to see stuff in person. Let me be the first to say, Cadence is not the place to go if you have questions, if you're curious about something, if you "just want to talk shop"... I think they expect the people who shop there to be on the same level as them in order to vibe correctly, and I'm clearly not. I'm sure their clientele comes from people who know the owner and are very close to the sport, which is great for them- I applaud them for finding such a great niche. But for anyone on the outside, let me save you the time and let you already know that you're not welcomed. So, let's boil down the good and bad- Good: 1. Gorgeous bikes 2. High-end components and accessories. 3. (Probably) pretty knowledgeable staff. Bad: 1. Customer service giving Pretty Woman vibes when Vivian gets chased out of the clothing store, or Ferrari dealership circa late-80s 2. Very limited selection. 3. I purchased 4 bikes from Cadence Cyclery in Encinitas June 2024 for over $14,000. The initial experience was not great, they had 2 bikes in stock and had to order the other 2, they told us they would be in the following week, when I showed up the following week they said they had the bikes but still had to assemble them and that would be another week.They never mentioned another week to assemble at time of purchase. They did rush to put them together and deliver them which was a good save, but still would of purchased the bikes elsewhere if I would of known that they would take over two weeks to get. Fast forward to March of this year, my 14 year olds bike rear wheel would not engage, we took the bike in and they said the hub needed to be replaced and this was caused by the wheel being loose. When I inquired why the wheel would be loose when they assembled it, they said we missed our 30 day inspection and insisted that there was no way possible that it went out of the shop with both wheels not completely tightened. He remembered because he built it himself. He also said we could do a warranty claim but they most likely wouldn't pay it and it would just be a waste of time. I then asked them to look up my husband's bike because it had a flat tire and seemed to always be losing air. He said we need to replace the tube, I then said I think they are tubeless. But he again assured me that it was tubed.. He built it himself. So I purchased 2 TUBES that they told me were the correct ones after looking up the bike they sold me. When we got home and looked they were in fact tubeless. But I figured I'll just put the tubes in since I have them. Unfortunately they were too big. Today when I was picking up the repaired bike I told the 2 guys at the register what happened they seemed sympathetic and nice so they got the manager to help me. Unfortunately he was not. He said that I could have used the tubes that were sold to me, followed by "probably shouldn't.... but You could". He also said that the shop never makes mistakes on bikes going out of his shop and that he would put money on it. So long story Short we paid for a hub on a bike under Warranty, due to the wheel being loose. I told him that we were loyal customers that support businesses that take care of their customers and provide good customer service and that he would probably lose us as customers over $211, to which he replied he really didn't care. Just really nonchalant, arrogant. We really could care less about your experience. I honestly think I would of probably had a better experience buying bikes from Target! read more

The lead mechanic here, Adam J., has always steered (unintentional pun) my wife and me in the proper direction for our multitude of needs for our variety of bikes. He knows almost everything about everything already. But on the rare occasion he doesn't yet know the answer, be does the research instead of just winging it. I have experienced the damage that an inept mechanic can do to a bike and do to a body. North County is very fortunate to have a bike shop like Cadence and a gifted yet humble mechanic like Adam. Give Adam the respect he deserves and has earned by understanding the enormous amount of bikes he is expected to give (painstaking) attention to. I recommend calling ahead for a service appointment instead of unreasonably expecting him to stop what he's doing, and put your bike ahead of everyone else ahead of you. Steve and Cooper are fantastic and get my highest praise as well. read more

I have drive train problems with my favorite bike. there components have been recommended and installed by good bike shops elsewhere over the years. Some are obsolete and not available. Adam was able to find compatible parts on line to save having to replace shifters/brake assembly. He took the time to make it affordable. He has a wealth of knowledge about the evolution of parts over the years, the up sides and down sides, the strengths and weaknesses of each and with an eye to keeping the solution affordable. read more

Excellent service and excellent people work here. They always greet you with a smile and hello, unlike other bike shops. I've had the opportunity to have Adam work on my bikes and he is a fantastic mechanic (book ahead because the word is out). They have several groups who meet at their shop. One particular group is called Team Best. They are a group of young cyclists and you'll see them on Saturdays after their rides. All in all this is such a groovy little shop. They helped me replace a bike while it was still under warranty. I have a cycling group as well and always send my riders here. A few have purchased bikes from them. I am a fan! Also got fitted by Eric who was a total pro, and worked with Adam on fine tuning build details when my bike arrived -- again, their expertise was clear and I had total trust in their work and advice. Elaine was manning the shop a few times I was in to get measured, pick up my bike, test ride etc and she was super friendly and helpful as well. Every person I interacted with at the shop clearly loves what they do and it comes through. Overall the shop holds itself to a high standard, is dedicated to the customer experience, and embodies the sense of community special to cycling. Update to my previous review as I decided to give it another try and had a completely different experience on my next visit. I decided to try a bike fit here and feel I left with a bike that will be noticeably more comfortable/efficient. Also was able to get a quote for a bike upgrade. I bought a new globe haul st from Cadence. The thing has been a nightmare and is currently back with them for the third time apparently being fixed. Not their fault that the machine is faulty but their customer service has been dire. The bike has been with them for the past two weeks and no sign of getting it back. Adam chopped my noob knob. Chopped it real aerolike. I just wish they had more chamois cream in stock. I buy that stuff by the case. I put it on my dogs. Also, when they call you, their caller ID comes up as "Funky Town" which is rad because you're getting a call from Funky Town...well, rad at first. But then, that song is stuck in your head and it's a really bad song when you're not on drugs. read more

I rode in a race with mud up to my axles and I obviously got something in my wheel bearings. The rear wheel had 1/2" of play. Cadence was busy but they booked me in for a Friday and my bike was done Sunday morning. New wheel bearings and a solid roll. Adam the Mechanic was helpful and encouraging and got me going again. The pick-up was easy and I checked out fast. This shop is new and they appear to have hit the ground running. Wish they had a texting system like a lot of businesses to update the customer. A top-end bike shop with helpful, unpretentious staff. Velotown sits along the cycling haven that is Pacific Coast Hwy, and stocks and services many of the top brands. They're even a Canyon Bicycles Service Center. Possibly the first shop to do that. I'm very impressed by Eric Takayama's knowledge and professionalism in getting the correct bike fit. Eric has a science of fitting someone to a bike down to the millimeter and will ensure you walk away with a PERFECT fit. I'm new to Cadence Cyclery store, but the staff is amiable and helpful. Remember that If you plan to get a bike fitting, you must allow at least 3 hours for it because you will get into all the nitty-gritty items like posture and bone structure that are often overlooked. Bikes are hard to find these days. They had what I wanted in my size! Maybe that was luck, so why five stars? Super friendly, Elaine was great, Adam was great, Max was great, got me rolling out the door, installed the pedals, cages, etc for me. I have advised all my friends to give them a try. Although for some reason I want to call it Velohouse and not Velotown. And they are open seven days a week!! Open when I can go, I don't have to jump through hoops to go to a bike shop. Service and selection are great! I've been bringing my bike to Adam, the head mechanic, for quite some time. I know I am always in good hands; he knows all there is to know about bikes, mechanics, and maintenance. He always provides top notch service along with everyone else in the shop. The staff has been so friendly and knowledgeable. This shop used to be called 'Velotown' but new partners have come in and completely flipped it!! Cadence Cyclery has a sick bike selection, and they are constantly bringing in new products and killer brands, even partnering with smaller local companies. Definitely recommend checking them out and bringing your bike here for any maintenance needs! read more
