Stumbled upon this place while trucking. Got good reviews and man im glad we stopped in! The prices are good/cheap and food is great! They even carry cheesecake factory cheesecake! Stopped in for lunch. I had the fish sandwich and I was not disappointed the fish as good as it ever was. Wife had the patty melt it was good, wish the toast was less crisp. Daughter had the breakfast special shes 11 and eggs were perfect, and the plate was empty so it was good! read more

Did a lunch stop here during my Portland IN trip. Looks more like a formal sit down restaurant from the outside. Feels like a diner on the inside. Just really an "in-between" experience. Menu is pretty much what you would expect from a mom and pop joint. It wasn't bad, but very mediocre. Soup was bland and the Manhattan wasn't anything special. Instant mashed potatoes. Felt like limited freshness on anything being served. If I were a local I would not hate the place nor am I truly bashing it. This is just a joint that is benefiting from the limited competition. I'd probably stop here sporadically, but Richards would be nowhere on my A or B list. read more

This place is filthy! Went here with my husband on our way home from from a long trip. Our service was terrible, our food was not good, and I'm fairly certain the ranch was spoiled! If we hadn't been so hungry, we would have left immediately upon seeing the filthy floor, but we had hoped it was due to having just had a big party. After looking around, we realized that the restaurant is actually just poorly maintained. As for service... well our waitress was pretty much the worst we have ever had. My buddy wanted to eat some home cooked meal and we weren't sure where to go here in Portland, IN. The place we originally went to eat was closed and we already did Buffalo Rings and Things. We drove by this little place and said, "What the Heck!" and decided to give it a shot. Now walking in, you're not too impressed, restaurant is divided into two halves, smoking and non-smoking. You grab a menu and seat yourself. Restaurant is has kind of a grimy sticky feel to it and the carpeting is spotted and stained. Menu is really not to big, some chicken dishes, chicken fried steak, burgers, and some other basic items. I ordered a mozzarella chicken; fried chicken breast covered with a slice of mozzarella cheese on a bed of spaghetti. Also requested a salad and home fries on the side. Clientel is mostly locals, small town folks coming in wearing bib overalls or whatever they wear around the house. Waitress was very young, unsure of herself and not very expedient. But pleasant enough, after all she is still in high school. Meal came rather quickly, my salad with ranch dressing was pretty standard, greens were fresh and dressing was from a bottle. The mozzarella chicken wasn't bad, nicely fried chicken on a bed of decent pasta and marinara sauce. Home fries were dynamite, I would come back for breakfast just for the potatoes. There was also a decent peice of garlic bread that went with the order. For dessert, blueberry pie, also delicious. All this for under 8 bucks. Can't beat that with a stick. Definitely a local spot to get some greasy food cheap. But you can't overlook the fact that this is a greasy spoon. read more

My grandpa, dad, and I were in town to visit relatives and look at gravestones with ancestors' names. My grandpa's cousin has lived in Portland most or all of her life, and her (now deceased) husband was the much-beloved mayor for a number of years. She took us to Richards for some greasy small town food and some stories of the old days. Richards (a regional chain) has a reputation as good -- not terrible, not spectacular -- food, and while I've never visited the Richards location 40 minutes from where I live, I figured this place would represent local culture as good as any other place, so I was agreeable to the idea. This restaurant lived up to the reputation -- good. Sure, it was a little worn in spots. Sure, the waitress was sort of a cliche, calling us each "Hon" in a raspy sweety-smoker voice. In other words: perfect, and the experience would have been less if she had been any different. The food? Well, y'know, pretty good, not flashy, exactly how it should be. I can't remember what any of us had, though I think Aunt Letha had the liver and onions. Oddly enough, this experience has made me more likely to visit the Richards location nearest me. I'll definitely choose them over Applebee's, Chili's, TGIFridees, etc., the types of restaurants need to make a huge flashy deal over mediocre food and garish decor -- both intended to impress local yokels and people with pedestrian taste who want to feel trendy. I had never been there before. New in town. Saw a Richards in Muncie that was advertising Fried Chicken. I love fried chicken. Since Portland doesn't have a KFC anymore we decided to hit Richards. And OMG!!! Very very very great chicken. Going to pick up some more next time. They sell them by the pack. The service was menial. I had to keep asking of I could get some more water but was ignored. Had their salad bar and it was ok. Glad the chicken made up for everything. Oh and I got some hot french fries that were very delicious!!! Just moved here from California. We have been to this restaurant 3 different times in the last couple months and the service is absolutely horrible and the food wasn't much better! Was gonna give them another chance today because it is the only place to get breakfast in Portland and we was told to seat ourselves so we did and we waited 15 minutes and no one even came to take our order but waited on people that came in after us !!!!! My family used to eat here every Friday. Those days are long gone. This place needs cleaned, scrubbed down & change their food supplier. Duct tape on booth seats, holes in the carpet, dirty bathrooms & dust everywhere. Sub par food & decent service. read more

Excellent service and food. My cooked-medium burger had just about the right amount of pink and the small salad bar was well-stocked, clean, and tasty. I used to work in the restaurant industry and am still quite fond of food- not that you'd notice, haha. Our competent young waitress was busy covering several areas (this was about 1 pm) but checked in with us several times and cheerfully answered our questions. After approaching the counter the waitress asked if we needed anything else? I said yes a ice tea and water. Ten more min. Went by and another waitress walked over and said no charge for salad bar. This Richards has improved a lot in the last year. The service has gotten better. The food has gotten better. The salad bar ha improved as well. Only thing I'm not a fan of with the salad bar is to get tomatoes you have to have onions and green peppers all together from the bar. Other then that I have had nothing but good food and service from there. read more

We have came here with friends for dinner. Fortunately the friends made up for the really bad meal. The food was horrible, the meat was freezer burned and the salad bar was really bad. The dessert was good and the service was very good. You cannot blame the bad food on the waitress. We have dinner with the friends again but not at this place. read more

We had decided to dine in with family. And even though it was confirmed of my order it still come out as incomplete and wrong. Then the waitress walked past and never brought my drink that was supposed to be included with the meal nor did she bring the condiment asked for. Then after asking another waitress that was gracious to bring the drink we retrieved our own condiment from another table. The first waitress walked out and verbally attacked me (which I've heard I'm not the first to experience this from the same waitress). I in turn stated my feelings about the entire situation and asked her to please walk away as to avoid further verbal attack. I will NOT be visiting this establishment again as long as she is employed there. Sadly I have learned this is the managers daughter and she only works weekends. OK if you want country cooking or a sandwich with fries. My swiss steak was a cube steak sauteed and coated with pre-fab brown gravy. My test of midwest restaurants is fruit pie. The rhubarb pie was edible but not memorable. Service at the end of the Sunday mid-day rush wasn't very organized. Sat for nearly 10 minutes while waiting for menus & water after being seated by a glum hostess. The whole place needs a scrub.....has a lingering funk odor of stale grease & floor cleaner. read more
