To be fair I arrived just 30 minutes before 133 Bistro was to close, but being only one of three tables in the restaurant I figured things could be good. The server was friendly enough and attentive, but beyond that and being in the former home of Bayleat's Coffee Shop there isn't much good to report. The food was bland and very portion controlled. The price was $9.99 for just the Taco Skillet and toast. It would have been very fair if the food was anywhere near decent. It was not. I first came to 133 Bistro, two days after I moved from Miami, Florida to Van Wert, OH. I was down and depressed... had to deal with a bunch of things before the move, leaving everything I knew behind and not celebrating my birthday all took an emotional toll on me. I was also exhausted from all the packing. Finally, I was getting tired of the fast food as I had been living in a hotel a few days before I came up here and now was living in a hotel. I needed a good meal badly... and I got it. Shop is located where Balyeats used to be. Restaurant was around for forever and really was a historical place for the town. The company I worked for actually bought the sign for Balyeats and restored it and it now is located in our Cafeteria area. Anyway, I digress. It is located in downtown Van Wert right next to the Van Wert County Common Pleas Courthouse, which is an absolutely beautiful courthouse. I walked in and it just has this hometown diner feel to it. You are always warmly greeted, and even though this place was packed, we were ushered into a table at the far end of the restaurant. I have since been in here quite frequently and can say it is always packed by locals and u never wait more than a few minutes to find a table. We quickly got some coffees and placed our orders. My brother and I both got meat lovers omelettes with home fries and toast, while my mother got some sunny side up eggs, sausage patties and pancakes. We also ordered some biscuits and gravy for the table. Food was delicious! Biscuits and gravy certainly warmed me up (it's been non-stop cold here), the eggs, home fries and other items were perfectly done. I have since switched to French fries once I realized that's an option because I prefer it. I have had lunch a few times including one day I had a chicken sandwich and some chili! The chicken sandwich was pretty good, the chili was better. Like I said, it's cold here... been weeks of nothing but 30 or lower and it's hard on this Ex South Florida guy. The chili was thick and flavorful, may not be the best I have had but it was darned good... could use a bit more kick to it. I like spicy foods. This has become my go to restaurant in town... and it's probably the same for the rest of the town. So glad I came in to this place, after my first meal it certainly brought a smile to my face. read more

This may just be the cutest restaurant in Van Wert. We walked in at lunch to a very long line, but quickly learned the counter is first come, first serve. The menu has a great selection and the service is impeccable. From the time we ordered to receiving our food was quicker than a fast food restaurant - and much better! Everything was freshly made and hot! This place seems to be the local go to and I can see why. It is very inviting and located in a cute downtown area. Newer place to eat in downtown Van Wert offering only breakfast and lunch. They have done a lot to the interior to brighten up the space and give it a more modern feel. For breakfast they offer many signature dishes, like: omelettes, skillets, waffels, and pancakes. All the portions are large and seemed very fresh. The staff was very nice and we're almost offering coffee too much (if that is possible). We only had two issues with our visit. First, the booster seats are very old and the grippers are worn down, combined with being too large for the seats spells disaster. Our daughter took a fall out if it in under 5 minutes. Second, there were a few pieces of ice that had something inside them. This was only in one cup, but still a bit gross. Overall a good place to eat, but offers some room for improvement. read more

Very much a small town feel. Everyone knows everyone. Food is average. Went for breakfast, most tables full, but didn't wait more than a couple minutes to be seated. Of note, they don't explain it (not realizing we aren't from here) but they don't give you your bill at the table. You just walk to the register and they check you out. Interested to try their lunch menu. While I know it's under new ownership, I wish that they had local art and design, as opposed to random NYC pictures. read more

This is a staple of Van Wert's courthouse square. A nice classic old school diner with is with a classic food menu to boot. I had the Patty milk and beef and barley soup. The soup was very hearty with a lot of stuff in it. A little salty for me but I finished the whole bowl so can't complain too much. The Patty melt was large and not as greasy as you get in some places so that was a win. I sat at the counter and service was pretty quick wick even though they had several other people in the restaurant and only appeared to have 2 waitresses for everyone, comma so I would absolutely go back there. read more

I definitely appreciate the number of locals here, like neighbors hanging out ("See you next Friday!"), but at the same time we felt welcomed. I ordered the one-egg plate and a side of corned beef hash, but declined the toast. I must have mis-communicated because I did not get the potatoes I expected. End of the world? Not even close. It's just what happened and because we were moving along toward Virginia so I wasn't going to complain. And to be clear: she only charged me for an egg and the hash. Experience had taught us that there wasn't much from which to choose once we got past Van Wert, so we were happy to find 133 Bistro along the way. I didn't want to be miserably full for the remaining 6 hours of our drive, so I ordered a breakfast sandwich with bacon and scrambled eggs on an English muffin with American cheese. It was fine. I'd guess the English muffin was warmed on the grill (I prefer it toasted), but the bacon was the perfect crispiness. The scrambled eggs were okay, and the cheese was present, but not melted and gooey (which I prefer). All of the ingredients are subject to preferences, and I didn't articulate any specifics, so I'm not complaining--just letting you know that if you have preferences, be sure to speak up! There were a few different hot tea choices, and the standard black tea was fine. A larger mug would have been nice, but the smaller size ensured my tea didn't get cold. The service was great, and the local vibe was pleasant. All the other customers seemed to know each other, and there were plenty of families hanging out.
