Well in my last review, 7 months ago, I bragged on the veggie omelette. I still stand by that. I always love coming here. The breakfast is exactly what I want when I'm paying for breakfast. The omelets are made the way they are supposed to with the egg being wrapped around the filling NOT the filling cooked into the egg. The railroad decorations always think of my dad since he's a conductor. The waitresses have been here forever so they are all a little saucy . I've never been here for anything but breakfast but the portions are large enough sharing would be easy to do. read more

A year ago I was looking for a new place to have breakfast. Just a little something to change up the routine and Yelp led me to this heckle out of the way place as you could find. The cool small town hicks place on Broadway in New Haven. Riches cafe has an impressive number of breakfast options that are done well. I usually go with some egg dish with home fries with a side order of bacon with toast. Be sure to check out the specials because there might be something worth trying! Wow is all we can say. We got treated as if we had eaten there for 20 years on our first visit. Our waitress was nursing a foot injury and was wearing a "walking boot" but that sue didn't stop her from doing a great job! The food is over the top and you won't leave hungry, that's for sure ! read more

My wife and I stopped in there for lunch. She had a hamburger that was too big for her to eat so she took half of it home. She said it was really good. I had their hamburger Manhattan just because I wanted some extra comfort and it delivered. The slaw, fries and potatoes were all good. The staff was friendly and efficient. Ordered the breakfast wrap with american fries and gravy about a week ago and I was not disappointed. It's actually a bit more food than you might expect and for the price it's a good deal. It's got that small town feel and it's quiet which I feel is perfect for a breakfast setting and it's my new go-to spot for breakfast from now on. We stopped in for lunch while driving by New Haven on the highway. The homemade items are really good. Specifically, the home fries rock my world. They were unfortunately out of the special sausage, so my skillet came with Bob Evans sausage. It wasn't terrible, but I would definitely prefer the homemade sausage. Strangely, the sausage gravy is from a box. I am not sure how a place that serves homemade sausage can also serve box gravy?!?! Even gravy made from Bob Evans sausage would be better than box gravy. Gross. I would definitely stop here again for home fries and skip the gravy. read more

A little too cheesey for my tastes on the skillet. Friendly enough staff, but could have been a little more welcoming to new comers. My son and I ordered steak n eggs and a cup of biscuits and gravy. The waitress took our drink order first and brought out our sodas. A short time later, she brought our food out. as we cut into our steaks it was clear that they were not cooked properly. We ordered them medium rare but they were so thin they were both done close to well done. As I tasted the steak I was shocked by the taste I thought at first it was spoiled meat. I quickly spit it out in the napkin and called the waitress over. i said quietly "ma'am I think this meat was bad and something must have happened bc the hasbrowns and the gravy have no flavor like maybe the cook forgot the seasonings can you please just have him remake our orders?" She was very rude and she said "what do you mean, we don't put spices in our food that's how it comes out that's why we put salt and pepper on the tables". She then slapped a ticket down and said "I'll return the food if you don't like it but I'm charging you $4.98 for the sodas". I said "ma'am we only took a couple drinks while waiting for our food which was sent back immediately and you are planning to charge us for four sips of our sodas? I think not...May I speak to the manager please?" She stormed away and came back with a very nasty old man who introduced himself as the owner. He was just nasty as he asked us what the problem was. I was very nice and I explained that our food didn't have any seasoning at all not even in the hashbrowns, eggs or gravy so we sent it back. Before I could even finish he grunted "Listen I don't know what you want, we don't spice our food at all even the steak is just meat turned on our grill and the gravy is just natural gravy with sausage added no spices that's why the salt and pepper is on the table like she said!" I said "Well we didn't know and i am sorry but I've never been to a restaurant where they do not use any seasonings on the food at all and that's fine we will leave and go down to Rack n Helens but are you really going to charge us almost five dollars for taking three drinks of our sodas while waiting for our food?" At that point I chuckled a little bc it almost surreal and it wasn't the $5 it was the point that the food was truly just a tasteless raw piece of meat turned over on a grill. At that point the old man (Rich, I'm assuming) snatched the petty 5 dollar receipt and screamed "Just get out!!!!!" i would never recommend this restaurant to anyone ever unless you keep a bag of spices on you at all times. Our family has been going to Rich's Cafe for years - sometimes 4 or 5 times a week for different meals/various family. The food and prices are great, and the staff is very friendly! They are open Friday evenings now from 5-8. Great place! read more

My family and I decided to give this place a try. I'm glad we did. The food was delicious and service was great! I got the feeling many locals eat here as the staff seemed to know a lot of people as they can in to eat. I meet several friends once a week somewhere for breakfast. Some happen to like this place. When I walked in to join my table, I made eye contact with the owner Jim and the two waitresses on duty, Laura and Diane. They were talking in the back dining area. I waited SEVEN minutes for a cup of coffee. Evidently whatever they were talking about was more important the waiting on customers. Meetings are for before or after work. When I got it, no apologies, nothing. I also called a couple of times to ask to reserve the two tables by the front window. They won't do it. I was told the waitresses loose money with our group because we stay about 1 1/2 hours and chit chat. There is never a waiting line to sit at 8:00 am in the morning on a weekday. They don't seem to mind when a group of men come in from FEDEX to eat together, and they can be very loud. It must be nice when a place has soo much money they don't need to acomodate people. read more
