I have been coming for years and typically have been good with my experience, however lately, the front desk reception can work on their customer service skills. Never a smile or welcome when walking through the door and approaching desk. I almost feel like I've interrupted their work. I don't go into the shop anymore just to shop for frames. Doctors here are very friendly and helpful. The advisors who assist with insurance and purchase of frames are friendly very knowledgeable as well. First impressions upon arrival are still very important in the overall experience.. I spent quite a bit of money on some prescription Maui Jim's, when I came to pick up the frames I asked if I can have it fitted. The lady in front questioned how it felt and advised me it would be a wait. Made me feel like it was a nuisance to ask. read more

Great optometrists with a wealth of expertise and knowledge. I started going here in 2001 when I got my first pair of glasses and continue to go here. I've tried other places in between but the optometrists weren't as knowledgeable, patient and informative. They also hired a new optometrists who I really like - she's talks you through the process and her findings while also providing practical skills to apply at home. She also gave her recommendations for my severe dry eye that have helped. The choice of glasses aren't as stylish and up to date but honestly, who cares. You can get your prescription and get glasses at a place of your choosing. I'd prefer to go to the right optometrist/doctor than risk my eye health for a place that has high ratings for their style of glasses and receptionists. read more

First let me point out that both the doctors in this establishment are great. I've been going here for about 3-4 years and my vision is always at its best when they do my exams. I will most likely go here just for the exams from here on out because I don't trust how other places have gotten my prescription situated. The reason why it's a 1 star review. Like I've said I've been going here for quite sometime. There are 2 lady's in the front desk and one of them is one of the rudest people I've ever been helped by anywhere. Her name is Kathy or Cathy she's an old lady with white hair. I've heard her speak to people that look like her very nicely. But every time she helps me and when I observe her help people that aren't like her she's very rude and short patience. She also has a smart attitude for absolutely no reason. I asked her for some help with situation before and so when I walked in and asked again what the status was she looked at and said "I don't know what you're talking about", very rudely. Even with her smart attitude I patiently told her that I understand that she dealt with many patients and she might've forgotten and continued to tell her the situation. She cut me off multiple times and talked over me. It's almost as if she was bothered and she couldn't stand helping someone like me. She's spoken to my mother like that before and I've heard her speak to other patrons like that as well. I've recommended a handful of my friends and family to this place but I no longer support this business nor recommended this place to anyone. That lady Kathy is rude and she needs to know her place. She is a front desk attendant and needs a major review on how she treats customers. She should not be talking at her customers like that ever! And the fact that this establishment and management is allowing her to be totally rude, talking over customers, and not being helpful at all reflects on the business at a whole. I want to be very clear when I say that I've only seen her speak like that to customers who aren't like her. The manager Monica told me herself that Kathy has had bad reviews like mine before. She hasn't stopped and I'm wondering why she's being allowed to be so nasty with her customers. If she were to ever work for me I would address that issue and if you can't fix it you're not fit for a front desk customer service role; period! At the end of the shelter in place, I called ahead to see if I can make an appointment with an Optometrist since I hadn't had an eye exam for 4 years and since I'm starting grad school soon, it would probably behoove me to get an eye exam before my insurance expires. I called and got an appointment the following week with Dr. Sampson who is an absolute joy. His tone is so calming, and his demeanor is so pleasant. He even took some time to explain how certain components of the eye work, and talked about the pathology of some relevant eye diseases. Fascinating! In the end, Dr. Sampson said my existing prescription was very stable and had not changed by very much. He gave my paperwork to an optician who helped me pick out some glasses. She was patient, even though it was quite warm, and her glasses were fogging up because we were all wearing masks. At the front counter, they have you sanitize your hands with an alcohol spray (a plus!). When checking out and paying for my glasses, the staff was very friendly and let me know that the glasses usually take approximately 2 weeks to come back and they will call me as soon as they come in. All in all, an excellent place. Such a great experience - especially with Dr. Sampson! read more

Have been going to this Establishment for many years now. They are Professional, friendly, courteous, knowledgable, and always resolve issues and questions. I have a severe stigmatism. This makes wearing eye glasses challenging. They have to be extremely precise about the angle in which the lenses sit on my face. This is complex since one ear is considerably higher than the other. They consistently take the time and effort to adjust them perfectly. I also wear contact lenses and they are experts on these as well. They take my insurance and always explain in detail the cost and break down my portion of expenses as well as what the insurance company covers. If there is ever an issue or concern, they resolve it. I've been a four-eye's since 1st grade. My first pair of glasses were a horn rimmed number. Nobody cared what I looked like, and they were atrocious. I don't even think I have a picture of me wearing them. I hated them. And that was the story of my life. Until about 6 years ago, when I finally started coming to Dr. Joyce, I didn't have a love affair with my glasses. I dont' know why I didn't think it was important to pick out a pair that thrilled me, after all, they are my most worn accessory, sans my wedding ring. So after my first visit, I picked out a pair of really cutting edge Christian Dior's. And guess what, I felt so darn good with those glasses. By the time I was ready for my next pair of glasses, I needed bifocals. So I got the progressive lens, with the thin lens, curved edges, etc and this time I chose Gucci's. My glasses were so hot, that by the time I had picked them up, they were showing them to other customers to show them what could be done with their lenses. Gotta love this place! read more

Five stars for my doc, zero for the reception staff. I've been with these folks for nearly ten years and I'm thinking I should move on to a different office. In recent years, the level of service has seriously declined. While the receptionists aren't outright rude, they certainly don't make me feel like a welcome customer. A few highlights over the years: I purchased colored contacts, and when my order came in, it was a different color from what I'd asked for. When I notified the staff of this, they shrugged and told me that they could not exchange it and instructed me to write a letter to the manager. I was annoyed but I let it go. Today, I came in for an eye exam for lenses and glasses. The receptionist told me my "insurance was out." Why they did not call me ahead of time and notify me of this, I don't know. I also didn't understand what my insurance being out meant, since I hadn't changed coverage or anything. I told her I didn't understand what that meant and she repeated herself. Again, I said I didn't understand and she said I couldn't go to another optometrist, my insurance was out until May. My frustration was rising, because I had no idea what she meant and she didn't attempt to explain it to me. I was standing at the counter, feeling like an idiot, feeling like I had wasted time coming into the office, and really just wanted to cancel my appointment and walk out. The REASON my insurance was out is another issue I take with them; I'd broken a single lens on my glasses and replaced it through the office last year. Because I replaced a LENS I was now out coverage. I was told I could use my insurance, so I did. Had I known that I would have to wait another year for glasses, I would have paid cash for the lens or gotten new glasses. Sigh. My optometrist is excellent. When I've tried on glasses, the staff that helps with selecting them is great. But the reception just irks me. Just crap customer service, and- more egregious- not at all informative or helpful. It is a shame because I've been going to this place for years, but I find my last few experiences have been enough for me. read more

My husband had an appointment with them and the office staff was nice, helpful and the office had a great selection, but delivery on his glasses was TERRIBLE! The first time they came back (yes, FIRST) the office noticed that it didn't have the extra touches on them (that were already paid for too) so sent it back to the company. The 2nd time they came back the extras were STILL not done and then they asked if it was very important that they WEREN'T done... um yah, because they were already paid for! But get this - they left a message that the were ready so we stopped in and THEN found out that it wasn't ready. The 3rd time had to be the charm because they were in with all the purchased extras completed. It took about an extra 2 weeks for the glasses to be completed. That was the WORST service ever for glasses and they should have taken extra care for a new customer. I highly doubt we will be returning to the office. If we do, it will strictly be out of convenience because it is in town and there is plenty of parking. read more

Dr. Joyce is great but the staff is less than helpful. Had a great experience getting my glasses but for some reason when I went to get my contacts they seem to have dropped the ball. Made an appointment a week in advance but they ended up having to reschedule me because the doctor had a change in his schedule. I came in for my "rescheduled appointment" and they told me I didn't have an appointment! The staff there aren't rude, they just assume you know what they are thinking so you are left asking questions to which they look at you as if you are stupid. It almost seems like they tell me one thing but what they really mean is something completely different. It can get pretty frustrating! read more

Dr. Joyce is wonderful! Very polite, nice and informative, he will explain anything and everything gladly if you ask him a question. He's knowledgeable and does his job well. I love him! I do not love his staff. They can be rude and snarky sometimes. If you stand there waiting, sometimes they will not say a word to you for 30 seconds before they finally greet you. Granted, this is when I went about a year ago, so maybe things have changed. Unfortunately, they're a little pricey. He also asked me if I had thought about laser eye surgery, and informed me all about recent advances in the procedure. I felt like I was his only patient for the day. Staff was friendly and helpful. I LOVE Dr. Joyce! I have been blind (tongue-in-cheek) since I was in 3rd grade and have utilized nothing but Ophthalmologists. I saw Dr. joyce during one of the worst events of my life his staff was caring, sensitive to my rampant emotions and extremely patient with me. I was able to practically custom build my glasses and I am now wearing THE MOST beautiful frames. Unfortunately, I was told that my eyes were too bad for contact lenses again, which made me very upset (vanity and all...); however, once I put on my new glasses; I totally forgot all about contacts. I get stopped on the street practically every day from people wanting to know where I got my glasses and I happily tell them Dr. Richard Joyce. I have a very difficult and strong prescription to fill and they got it right the very first time! I will definitely be a return patient! LOVE THEM!! read more

This is based off my entire experience. My initial experience was just fine. I had never worn glasses before and knew I probably needed them. The staff was fine and the OD was very friendly and informative. Now, to why I'm only giving 3 stars. I was told I was near/farsighted, had an astigmatism (which I do in both eyes) and that I should wear my glasses all the time and I needed to wear them for a few weeks to get used to them. I I received my glasses and from the moment I put them on my world was visually chaotic. After wearing them for a few weeks I started to get what I can only describe as vertigo and weird dizzy spells. I took the glasses off for a while and tried again to get used to them. No go. Same thing. I went back and described what was happening to me and how something didn't feel right with my glasses. Everything close to me was fine but everything far away was really blurry and I described all the symptoms I was having. The OD seemed perturbed that I thought something was wrong. He rechecked my vision and said that the Rx was correct and that I simply needed to get used to them and sent me on my merry way. He seemed frustrated that I was even there with any concerns. Well I never did get used to them and wearing them was just too much. A year later I decided to go to a different optometrist for my check up, and as it turns out, I'm only farsighted and my Rx was too strong for me. I now have my new Rx and they are 1000% better. My whole world isn't blurry and I can actually wear them without feeling like I'm losing my mind. All in all, trust your gut people. If after those few weeks of a new Rx and something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. I'm glad I got a 2nd opinion even if I had to wait a year for the insurance to cover it. read more

I have been coming here for at least 10 years now. I think....yea lets say 8-10 years now. And I have needed correctional lenses since I was 8 or 9 years old. If not earlier in life. Now here the ladies at the front desk are all very nice and very helpful. Never been a moment that I witnessed any bad customer service. There are plenty of frames to choose from and if you are lucky like I was when I got my last pair, They were having a trunk sale. I found me a cute pair. I shouldn't have went for that pair as they were more than my budget but oh well every woman deserves a very cute pair of glasses. At any rate Dr. Joyce and Dr. Sampson both have seen me over the years and are both very gentle with my eyes. My first experience has been with my very first pair of contact lenses and let me tell you that was not an easy thing. Seeing as I do not like things in my face and let alone I could barely even put eye drops in my eyes they force me to do my homework and to practice touching my eyeball, of course with clean hands. Over time it all worked out and now I will always come to them. read more

Fantastic place to get an eye check-up. Dr. Richard Joyce is very friendly, informative and does a thorough job. It's been about 10 years since I last went to the eye doctor. I wore glasses for a little while when I was in elementary school, but I I outgrew the need for them. After my check-up, Dr. Joyce recommended that I get a pair of glasses to see better. Especially to see better while driving at night in the rain. They have a nice selection of frames there and the lady that assisted me in selecting the right pair of glasses was very helpful. I had to wait about 10 business days to get the glasses, but the whole process was pleasant and the office staff are very nice. I plan on coming back next year for my annual check-up. read more

The staff is rude and has a high turnover. They also show you the most expensive glasses. But Dr. Sampson was worth it. So nice. But the last two times over 4 years, I got Dr. Joyce. He is just a rubber stamp at best. The first visit's set was questionable. However, when I got the most recent set of glasses from Costco, I could hardly see! My eyes hurt. THANK GOD they allowed me to reorder for free with another optometrist's prescription. I looked at my prescriptions written over the last few years, and Dr. Joyce just filled out the SAME numbers even though my eyes had changed. And some of the numbers were opposite (left for right eye, and right for left) of the numbers of prescriptions that I can see well with. read more

They took the time to dig deeper into my insurance coverage and offered me the best deals possible. Dr. Joyce is a very nice and helpful person, but unfortunately his staff are EXTREMELY RUDE (possibly the worst I have ever experienced). They sigh, roll their eyes, speak to you in a derogatory tone, and never look you in the eye. They also frequently make mistakes; luckily Dr. Joyce noticed one of them when I was in for a check up. The first pair of glasses I received here had a lens that was far too powerful, yet when I went in to tell them about it they told me: "you need to let your eyes adjust to it". I have owned those glasses for two years now and I have yet to have my eyes adjust to them: it is virtually impossible to read with them on as my eyes have a hard time focusing. I thought my vision would be better with contacts so I went through the procedure to get them (which was painless except for dealing with the staff). After receiving my trial lenses and paying for a six month supply, I never received the contacts. I was unable to do anything about it because I was away at college, but when I came back I found out that they discontinued my brand (which they never notified me of). My eyes had to be remeasured for the new brand, and the new contacts were extremely uncomfortable. I recently found a 5 year old pair of glasses from Kaiser that don't fix my astigmatism, and they correct my vision far better than the newer glasses. I do not know if Dr. Joyce is incompetent (doubt it) or if his staff mess everything up, but I find that the rudeness alone is reason enough to bring my business elsewhere. read more

This review is being given because I was 2 minutes away from walking in the door to the optometrist and was told my appt was cancelled because the dr said I was too late. I have twin boys at home under 2 and rearranged my whole day and work schedule contacting a baby sitter to get this appt and then they cancel it when I'm in the parking lot. This is not good business practice and I will not be returning. Dr's need to be a little more understanding, if 15 minutes late I could understand but I was only 2. read more

Rude Doctor wouldn't tell my prescription when I asked and told me "don't worry about it"

I recently contacted this office about getting a HoyaLux ID Mystyle progressive lens. Initially, optician said no problem she could do this lens. Next when I spoke with the office manager, Nevis, she said no she could not do that lens. I spoke with Dr. Joyce, he was polite and seemed open to handling this lens under certain conditions. Thus, the one star. Finally, they said they could not do the lens. They are the only optometrist in the area that had an equipment for measurement of this lens. Subsequently, I asked them to simply take the measurements with my frame, so I could take the measurements elsewhere that could do the lens. I was willing to pay a reasonable for this service. Nevis said it would cost $50.00 per frame or $100.00 for two frames. I informed Nevis that it was an excessive fee for the requested service. I asked to have Dr. Joyce contact me regarding this matter. I never heard from Dr. Joyce. Later, checking with other optometrists and opticians in the same community, I learned that they don't even charge any fees for just taking measurements. So, I felt they tried to gouge me with the an unreasonable fee when others in the same community provide this service for free. Hopefully, they will be more reasonable with other patients. Naturally, I did not want to succumb to their unreasonable demands and declined to pay the fee. My advice to everyone, get everything in writing beforehand so you know if the fees are reasonable or not. Specially, dealing with Nevis, exercise extra caution. read more

Dr Joyce and his eye exams are top notch. His supporting staff and glasses are a different story. I have never been thrilled to talk to any of his staff members for the past 2 years I have gone. My worst experience happened when I got new lenses in 2008 for my prescription through his store. I have bad eyes so I paid for all the possible upgrades to make my lenses thin. The first time they fulfilled my order, the lenses were HUGE! I showed them and they refused to believe me. After measuring the lenses they realized there was a mistake. They sent the lenses back and got me new thinner ones. The new lenses were also considerably thicker than my previous ones despite almost no prescription change. (Side note, my previous lenses came from For Eyes, an awesome place to get glasses) After another year of having my stupid lenses from Dr. Joyce, I went to Kaiser for my annual check up. The doctor there told me my right lens was too strong of a prescription. That explains why I have gotten headaches wearing my glasses. So to wrap up my review. Dr. Joyce is an amazing doctor and I highly recommend him. I never had problems with my contacts there either. What I do not recommend is using his store for frames or lenses. They use a terrible lens manufacture. Avoiding his store for glasses will save you the time and headache I have gone through. read more
