My second Michelin-starred disappointment in a week. DEFINITELY first world problems here. Nonetheless, the saying goes something like "don't meet your heroes" I think -- well, Rich Table was certainly not my hero, but I have now lost count of the number of people (friends, strangers) who recommended Rich Table to me. So when we finally went, the saying turned out to be true. Sadly, it wasn't just OK, it was actually quite bad and unfortunately tarnished what should have been a lovely anniversary night. Needless to say, I won't be going back, as there are too many great SF restaurants (Mourad, Coqueta, Octavia all immediately come to mind) but for the rest of you that might care about the things I care about, here it goes:
Ambience: Arguably probably polarizing -- it is very loud inside. To be fair, I probably should have read up on this beforehand. Making it worse though is that we were seated next to a table of 5 bros whose drivel was only drowned out by the clearly-drunk woman who came and started talking to the waitress at the top of her lungs right next to me. Ok not so great but maybe the drinks would make up for it.
Drinks: My first try was a cocktail (think it was called the Raspberry Beret), which was delicious in the sense that it was basically just juice. Given that I like a little alcohol in my $12+ drinks, I went for a Hendrick's martini on my next round later in the evening. Two issues: 1) they use the tiniest cucumbers ever -- seriously, they might as well not be there, and 2) the bartender put vermouth in my dry martini. To make matters worse, as you will see below, we got the tasting menu with one pairing for my partner, while I decided to have cocktails. The wine pairings were about as good as something you could quickly grab off the wine shelf at Target, but to make matters worse, the waiter first made a big deal of the fact that we only wanted to order 1 pairing (just either tell me you do or do not allow it, but I don't need the lecture) but when we confirmed that that is what we wanted to do, he made it a point to only speak to my partner about the wines. It was as though I was a stuffed bear; like seriously, at least make eye contact once in a while as I'd love to hear where the wines are from or whatever. So Strike 1 (the ambience stuff was subjective so I won't give it a strike) for drinks, and Strike 2 for service.
Food: Here's the thing. All of the above could have been outweighed by a delicious meal. It wasn't. First off, we were often waiting between meals, or my partner got the wine pairing too early before the food actually came (how is this a pairing then?). This isn't acceptable when paying this much money and for a place with a Michelin star. I'll mix this with Strike 2 for service. But the food, oh the food. Let me preface this by saying I LOVE salt. Like if you have ever been around my for 5 minutes while eating you would know this. So how shocked was I when the food had way too much salt. Enough to make it inedible. After the second dish that I literally couldn't
eat, I told the waiter who apparently relayed this to the chef. I was really hesitant to say anything because, as I told my partner, I knew their solution would probably be to say I'm super salt-sensitive and not put any salt. So I wasn't surprised at all when some dude (he didn't intro himself as the chef so I have no idea who he was) came with our next item and said not to worry, they "put no salt". Ugh. Turns out though, they definitely did put salt but they just put the appropriate amount and it was great. Aside from the salt issue, the dishes were basically hit or miss. Hits: Bread and Butter, Beef Wontons, Croquettes, Oysters, Beef Agnolotti, Cod. Misses: Falafel (if you've ever been to Clover in Boston and had their falafel sandwich, this was like that but way worse), Sea Urchin pasta (simply put, sea urchin is just disgusting), Avocado salad (Seriously, look at the photo, this was inedible partly due to too much salt and partly because it was basically a block of unripened avocado (they didn't even cut it) with salty mush poured over it and some leaves/flowers), Sardine Chips (the sardine part in the middle was good, the chip was super bland).
So, Strike 3 for food, you're out. If you do go though, probably don't do the Tasting Menu nor the Pairing. Just stick to a few of the better items on the menu and you'll probably be fine. But here's the thing, are you trying to pay all this money (and have to try so hard to get a reservation) just to be fine?.
PS. Due to the salt issue, they actually ended up giving me a free wine with the final two items (the meat entree and the dessert cubes, which, spoiler alert, sucked). This was nice but unfortunately one of them was something that was not called Port but resembled all the horrible qualities of Port. Some points for that but overall our waiter was just not very friendly or welcoming so I don't give too many back. Strike remains for service. read more
