I've heard great things about Rich Table and I was so hyped about coming. This is probably one of the hardest reservations in SF (unless you want to eat dinner at 10pm) and I was so excited when I got a reservation the day before due to a last minute cancellation.
The restaurant is pretty small and the space is a lot tighter than I had expected. The interior kind of reminded me of State Bird Provisions and Beretta Valencia.
It happened to be a winemaker takeover night and we came in for a "wine dinner" reservation, which gave us exclusive privileges to order wines from Big Basin Vineyards, which were featured on the menu, just for this night.
The waitress gave us a rundown of the menu and recommended the following that are staples on the menu:
*Dried porcini doughnuts raclette
*Sardine chip horseradish crème fraîche
*Aged beef dumpling RT chili crunch
*Burrata tikka masala "schmear", crispy brussels sprouts, Schlok's bagel
*Tonnarelli, sea urchin "cacio e pepe", idiazabal (she said this is a 100% must-get item)
For 2 people, she recommended getting 2-3 bites, 2 appetizers, 1 pasta (2 if you're really hungry), and 1 entrée. For us, this was WAY TOO MUCH food. We didn't finish 4 out of the 7 dishes that we ordered. I would personally say to pick no more than 3 items between the bites and the appetizers. Their appetizers are basically entrée-sized.
The sardine chip was a good starter dish. It's pretty light and refreshing, and the horseradish crème fraîche was delicious and paired well with the chip. Everything else did not feel like an appetizer to me. The aged beef dumpling was good but not spicy in the slightest. Also, $5 for a dumpling? That is a little insane.
In all honestly, I would like to give the dried porcini doughnuts raclette a 1/5. This was an absolute miss. We both took a bite and just looked at each other. It was way too heavy and just made me feel absolutely gross. There were 5 of these in a serving, and we each only had 1.
The burrata tikka masala "schmear", crispy brussels sprouts, schlok's bagel was one of my favorite items of the night. It was delicious. We also ordered maguro tataki, braised cranberry beans, swiss chard, fried sourdough. Honestly, this dish just had me confused. I was confused about how to eat it, what was going on, and honestly just everything about it. Other than the fact that the tuna was kind of bland, everything else tasted good by itself, but it just felt like everything was thrown together haphazardly. The presentation was confusing and I was just so lost at what this was or was meant to be. Also, neither of these two dishes felt like an appetizer.
Next was the tonnarelli, sea urchin "cacio e pepe", idiazabel. I have to say that this tasted pretty standard, like a normal cacio e pepe. It was very rich and creamy and I can understand why this attracts an audience. Kind of weird that this was the same size as the appetizer though. I don't think I could have eaten more than half of this by myself, just because it's so rich and heavy and the taste becomes quickly monotonous after the first few bites. It was a good dish to share. I also think the use of acidity (for example, lemon) would have balanced out the creaminess and elevated the dish a lot more.
Lastly, we had the dry duck confit, quince, and duck fat cornbread. While I really wanted to enjoy this dish, I was just way too full at this point. The duck was well seasoned and perfectly cooked, and the duck fat cornbread was simply delicious and was probably my favorite item of the night. The quince and the sauce were a little too sweet, but overall this was a solid dish.
Flavor wise, I would give it a 4-4.5/5. But I honestly just had so many questions about the dishes throughout the meal: the pairings, the sequence, the presentation, etc. It felt like everything was too much of its own thing and didn't flow into a sequence very well. Also, every single dish was garnished with chive, A LOT OF chive. I didn't dislike it so much as I was just confused. It made the plating look messy. The presentation of the dishes can honestly use some improvement.
Service was good. Our waitress checked in often to see how we were doing. I would come back and order half as much food. read more
