My onigiri was made to order and the person who made it just slathered on Sriracha hot sauce to make it spicy. If I had known that was what it entailed, I would have opted for the Sriracha on the side. Since my husband and I were also ordering from London Chippy, my little snack made me quite full. I was a little frustrated with my experience here, but it ended up working out. Ricebunn clearly marked their gluten free options, and I told them up front I was ordering the gluten free items and had celiac, and needed to order gluten free only. The cashier acknowledged this, and even spoke to the person making the food. I got my food, and sat down. The cashier ran out and grabbed my food, and said the sesame seed blend contained gluten, and they needed to make it again. I was glad they caught it, but I get frustrated when they mark items as gluten free but don't truly check the ingredients. Ricebunn is located in the Trade food hall in Irvine. They specialize in onigiris, or rice balls, but they also have some plate entrée options. Parking in this plaza during lunch time can be a mess, so I recommend coming a little early to beat the lunch rush. Sad to say the Trade food hall does not have many great options, so this was more of a settled decision since we were already there. I usually don't like such a heavy carb meal, especially during lunch when we still have to get back to work and be productive. I ordered their Onigiri Trio ($13) where you can pick the flavors of onigiri you like to mix and match and try a good variety. I went with the KBBQ Beef, Tuna Mayo, and upon recommendation of the friendly helpful cashier the Salmon. You can make any of your rice balls spicy, so I asked for the spices on the side. The nice cashier also threw in a complimentary lemonade. It was much appreciated. The food was prepared in a reasonable amount of time. These rice balls were artistically crafted, and unlike the standard ones, they had a generous amount of filling on the inside AND on top. Yum! Really good deal for lunch and I feel like it was well executed. For all the onigiri lovers, this spot is for you. Spicy sauce is really good (tastes like spicy mayo) and you can ask to get it on the side. - Salmon: so freaking delish! Cooked with miso. I would get multiple in a heartbeat. - Tuna: tasted like regular ol' tuna- nothing to write home about - KBBQ: finger licking good. So much that we were fighting over it. - Shrimp: a disappointing mush. Small pieces of mushy shrimp with a mayo that did the opposite of pleasing the senses. - cucumber salad: has a surprising kick but not my favorite. Out of the 4 fillings chosen, only 1 was decent the rest low quality. The good one is salmon! It was a chunk of salmon, tender and flaky cooked well. Not just canned salmon which was a plus. However, it's not worth the extra cost (.50) to get it spicy as it's just a dollop of sriracha on top of the rice. Crab was so disappointing it's stuffed with imitation crab with lots of mayonnaise I was expecting real crab since that's what's listed on the menu. Tuna mayo was canned tuna blended like a paste. Presentation wise, not appealing to see a huge clump on top of my onigiri. It was too salty for my own taste & the mushy rice didn't compliment the tuna spread. Vegan option was not appetizing, I wouldn't recommend. The filling looks like canned assorted veggies mixed with too much mayonnaise/cream. Of the veggies, I could make out peas, corn and carrots, the rest were miscellaneous/obscured by the amount of cream coated on it. I usually gravitate towards tuna onigiris because they're my favorite and Ricebunn did not disappoint~ It is a bit pricey for how small it is, but it's totally worth. I liked how soft the rice was and the amount of tuna they put in it. I thought the tuna was just only on top, but nope there's a huge amount inside the onigiri as well once you bite into it. The ratio is perfect compared to how other onigiris are where there's so much rice not so much protein. I thought the furikake seasoning also helped enhanced the flavors too. Overall, we both would def come back to try their other items for dinner. I'm literally craving it as I'm writing this review. I just wish I lived closer to come more often. read more
