Seriously? WORST customer experience. I wanted some new tires. I gave a younger man who works there the make and model and he said he still needed the tire size - fine (like they can't look this up) - we agreed I would call in after I got back from work - which I did. Spoke to an older gentleman who gave off the impression that he was irritated to pickup the phone. He told me just bring the car in the morning and we can order the tires and get them on same day. OK came in the morning - guess what - they aren't going to be able to get the tires on my vehicle. WASTED TIME OFF WORK. What a joke. I should have listened to other reviewers. Had taken in my bucket 1990 Chevy G30 van in to Rex Auto for some overheating issues. Took the van in on Friday, they diagnosed on Saturday and had the repair done by Monday before closing time. Also requested to change out the water pump just in case. I was very impressed with the price. They charged me just a hair over $775. It could have easily been over $1000 at any other mechanic. No issues with the repairs either, as temperature is back in normal operating range. Thoroughly impressed and will definitely bring my vehicle back if there's any further issues. Addendum : To the previous reviews that went in to any mechanic shop for just an oil change, mechanic shops dont like you because you are making that shop break even or even lose money. There is Jiffy Lube and Pennzoil stations for that task. And also for those saying customer service might be lacking at Rex. I also experienced a little bit of attitude, but if you work with it, you might be surprised at the professionalism displayed after. An honest angry mechanic should be chosen 100 out of 100 times over a dishonest, nice mechanic. They are good people. read more

My low tire indicator have been going on an off for quite some time. It seems like every time I filled up air, it would come right up up. Wait-time: Virtually no wait time. I also called ahead of time around 5:00 p.m., and they said that I can come anytime. Service: They were really nice to quickly diagnose the issue - a nail in one tire, and over-inflation in two others - and fixed them all for me. Tire pressure check is free. $20.00 to patch up the nail, which they told me should last the life of my tire. (Yay!) Location: Very convenient on 31st Avenue, on Taraval. The opening is right on Taraval, so be patient of pedestrians, MUNI, and other cars when backing out. Bus and Parking: The L MUNI stops close by. And if you have time to browse around before or after, there is plenty of free 1-hour parking all around, since there are some eateries around. OVERALL: Very quick, honest, and upfront. So had brakes and new tires on our 350z... great work reasonable price... but we'd been having a really bad metal on metal sound on our front end...took it to the Nissan dealership a bunch of times and they never found out the problem..they even went as far as to lie to us, saying "that's just the way the car sounds"... Really ! Well Jacky Cheng from Rex's found the problem..."just a loose bolt"...he tightened the bolt problem solved...he was honest and didn't charge us for tightening a bolt... lesson here ? I've been coming here for many years after another mechanic who I liked charged me to rotate my tires and told me after that I needed to change all my tires ASAP. They're very honest and straight to the point. One time they fixed my window by adding some ground to it after I brought it 2x to a window specialist who charged to open up the door more than once but could not figure out the problem. This is the first time Yelpers have led me wrong. :( My "check engine" light turned on for the first time on Thursday. My usual go-to mechanics were booked until the following week, and I hoped to get it somewhere quickly to avoid missing work or risking a breakdown over the weekend. I was thrilled when I read the stellar reviews for Rex on Yelp. I called shortly after Rex opened on Friday to see if I needed to make an appointment or just stop by. I let the phone ring 20 times -- no answer, no voicemail, no old-school answering machine, nothing. Very odd in this day and age. I waited a half-hour and tried again. Still no answer whatsoever. I figured that they might be busy tending to customers who were there in person, so I decided just to stop by. When I arrived, the only person in the place was a guy who muttered "no English" and turned away. I peeked into the front office and nobody else was to be found. I don't know how this place manages to stay afloat, but apparently they have enough business to not bother dealing with paying customers who need to get their cars fixed. read more

I've had three cars in and out of their shop multiple times, and in every instance they've been prompt, professional, and friendly. More than once they've taken an afternoon to diagnose a problem and then told me where to get the parts cheaper than they could provide them! I'm on a first-name basis with Jacky and Scott, and they've always been completely honest with me about costs, and more often than not, they'll come in under their estimate. This is my second time visiting Rex Auto Services. And this is the second time that I find myself ridiculously satisfied with their honesty, efficiency, extremely fair rates and a stellar turnaround time in getting issues fixed! I stopped by thinking they would be swamped as I saw many cars there. I had 3 different issues that needed to be addressed. They proved again to be true experts in their profession. Not to mention they leave you suggestions on things to fix which is a highly commendable- they don't pressure you with add on services but they allow you to decide for yourself, plan and save up for expenses that you might not even be aware of! I went there 2 times ; first time for a power steering fluid leak and the second time for a oil leak. Both times they did a great job, the price was very reasonable and the car was ready in time. The second time I had to return the car because the engine was making an abnormal noise at low regime, they spent hours checking the engine and finally found a dirty sensor. They cleaned it and I had nothing to pay ! I will definitely return to this place. read more

Just got my car back from this place! Quick service!!! Been here twice now and both times it was a matter of convenience. The first time I took my car here was because the coolant line burst (or something like that) and I couldn't keep driving. This was the closet garage to where I was. So my boyfriend got out and started pushing the car down to Rex Garage. When we got to the corner of 31st and Taraval (the traffic on Taraval doesn't have a stop sign, so we thought it would be impossible to push across the street) one of the guys over from Rex came over to help us. Got in, they checked it out and we left for an hour or so. It kind of weirded me out a bit though when they were checking it out. It was the end of the day and all three guys at the shop hovered over my car to take a look at it. They were talking in Chinese too which, if I didn't know what they were saying, would warrant suspicion (the thing is, people usually assume that I don't understand Chinese especially since my boyfriend is Hispanic!). But either way it's kind of rude to talk in another language in front of customers, whether or not they understand! Anyways, came back, paid $40 for the replacement/repair, got our old part back in a little bag and left. $40!!! We couldn't believe it! They even filled our car up with coolant! Left and we were happy! Had some window problems on Saturday (it wouldn't roll up all the way) and my boyfriend called to see if we could bring it in (we were hopeful but wasn't expecting service on the weekend). Excepted that they told us to call back on Monday to figure out the details and bring in the car. Brought it in, told them about the issue and asked if they could take a look at my alternator belt while they were at it. Dropped off the car, the guy took a quick look at it and said that the glass of off the track and it would be a couple of hours. He told me they would give me a call when they open it up and take a look at it. Called me about an hour and a half later to tell me that it was going to be $65 and it was going to be another two hours or so. I said great!!! An hour or so later, was on my way home on muni and passed by the shop. Saw that my car was sitting outside so decided to get off and see if it was done. It was!!! So I paid and drove home in my car! Not only was the window back on track it now sits perfectly in place (before I brought the car in the window never closed right and would stick out a couple inches when rolled up all the way). This sure beats having my boyfriend drive down to his mechanic in San Carlos! read more

First time coming to this garage with a leaky valve gasket that needed to be replaced. Made an appointment to see them after the New Year. A little confusing of where to park because the shop is on Taraval. I was blocking the sidewalk a bit when I arrived. They are hard at work there so I had to flag down a mechanic who was busy in the shop. I told him I had an appointment and he wrote it down on a three ring binder. I didn't see a computer anywhere in that office beside the credit card machine. They said they would call me with an estimate and if I needed any additional maintenance. After two hours they called me, and told me it would be two to three hours. I didn't get a call after the third hour, so I called them. They told me it was ready to pick up, whatever. I go to the shop, wait for like fifteen minutes because they had to get my car out of shop; there was a lot of cars in there. It cost me about $130. I was happy with the price because it was $70 less than what other shops told me it would cost. They do hard work, and I will probably return in the VERY near future ( I have an old car). I would give this place four and a half stars if possible, just because their organization makes me bit nervous, and I had to remind the guy to give me a receipt; other than that, I'm happy with their service. read more

I went to Rex's Garage because my car was making a weird noise. When I got there I was greeted and helped by Scott. He checked the car out and when he figured out what was wrong he sat down and explained everything to me and showed me pictures of what he was talking about under the car. I live in the neighborhood and my battery cable wouldn't stay connected-- I couldn't for the life of my find a wrench to fix this! I finally stopped by and they fixed it free of charge! (And it made me feel a little better that they had to try a few different tools before getting it themselves:) ) It smelled like they smoked cigarettes inside the garage but they were really nice and I really appreciated the small fix for free. That's really great business practice because I'm likely to come back there if (hopefully not) I need something a little bigger than that. I recommend them based on that much. read more

I found myself in some car trouble...no my car was running fine, but my stupid license plate screws were too rusty to remove. Being a DIY'er, I tried what I could including the use of drill bits and screw extractors to remove the darn things. Well, long story short-my efforts were futile and I probably made the situation worse. I gave the guys at Rex a call and they told me to bring the car in, same-day and they took care of it for $15. The guy there was nice enough to drill holes in the front of my car to install the front license plates. It's more 3.75 but I'll give it 4. I called on a Friday to see if I could get an appointment to bring my car in to change my tires - all 4 and I had my own tires. My appointment is 1pm and I show up wanting to drop my car off and he said it'll be awhile and I told the guy at the counter that I made an appointment the night before. They don't have books so the guy on the phone probably verbally confirmed it. Clearly appointments don't mean shit. He said he will do mine right away because I gave him the stink eye for taking an appointment - stink eye to the rescue! Anyways they called me 30 minutes later saying the tires were changed and ready to go. Pretty awesome considered they originally told me an hour and every place I called said 1 to 2 hours. Wow they were SO nice and helpful. Took my car in because the check engine light was on and they didn't even charge me. They told me go to a dealership since my car is fairly new and my warranty would cover it. They even did some research for me to confirm what I needed would be covered by warranty. I'm usually reluctant to come to auto shops since some of them have a record of charging you way to much for simple fixes. I was recommend to go here by my brother in-law and to ask for Jackie or Scott. I came in on a Monday morning around 11 and it looked like they were busy with other car but I came in asked for an oil change and a brake check. Jackie went to work on my car right away changed the oil in 30 minutes and told me I needed a new timing belt. He suggested I come in the next day because ordering the part would take hours. I came in the next day and Jackie changed the timing belt in 20 minutes. He's fast and an easy going guy. I will definitely be back for future maintenance. read more

So on Saturday night, there was a problem with my girlfriend's front right tire. Apparently she hit the curb really hard and the valve stem broke off. So I went in today at around 10, and had the tire fixed within 10 minutes. That's QUICK service. Last time I had something similar, the guy at a different garage told me to come back in 2 hours. 2 HOURS?!?!?!! I'm never going back to that place. And the price was awesome for the fix. I was issues with starting my Honda CRV, took it to Rex Auto and they were great! I initially thought it was an alternator issue, but Jackie informed me that he would check and let me know.
