Our party showed up and instantly realized this is not the same Retro Taco restaurant as before. No matter, it is under new ownership and the menu has been revamped with some Asian fusion food in addition to the Mexican food. We chose to sit outside on the patio because it was less stuffy and loud versus sitting indoors. I ordered asada Cali fries and some other members of my party ordered beer, cocktails, taquitos and various tacos. Some friends selected al pastor as their protein for their tacos, and were informed that it was not available. Then we had an above average wait time for everything. We were told the kitchen was out of al pastor meat, so they would sub some tacos with asada/chicken/etc.. Then we were told the al pastor meat was located, and our orders were restored. Then I received my Cali fries with al pastor meat, which I had not ordered. I observed other members of our party wait for very inconsistent periods of time for beverages. I recall some receiving complicated cocktails before a canned domestic beer. The food and drinks were well enough, once it all arrived. We did not mind too much because we were all going out to another bar in downtown Riverside afterwards. My Cali fries had some strong papas because they held up to the ocean of melted cheese they were drowned in. It was more like a caldo. A couple members of the party had issues with their bills and our server was responsive to correcting any pricing issues. There is no longer merch, a mural, art or vinyl records for decor but the new owner assured us that they are working to have another local artist paint a new mural. An average experience, not bad! Trying out Retro after the new owners took over. This meal was such a let down as previously the flavor was amazing and now it seems to be average. Although they advertise taco Tuesday (1/2 price tacos) and a la carte tacos, we were informed these options were only available until 12pm. The taquitos were pretty bland with good guac. Tacos were again, average, with somewhat flavorless rice and beans. The highlight of the night was the service. Patrick at the bar was friendly and playful. The holiday cocktail was delicious. Came in on a Sunday morning, rainy day. My family and I were looking for something to eat, as some of the other places were reservations only. We walked by and saw retro on main and decided to check it out based on the menu. The service was wonderful, we had a very attentive waitress. It was also nice to be in there with no one but ourselves as we had a baby with us. The food on the other hand wasn't the greatest which is mainly why I'm giving them 3 stars. My bf and i both ordered Loma Saltado. I will say the meat quality was very good, but the dish itself was very salty. The rice also was very dry and crumbly almost crunchy. Came in for the love island showing 40 minutes early to get good seats and food. Waited 20 minutes before having to request a menu, and even then was not able to order drinks. Multiple groups of people came in and were served immediately. They got drinks and food all while we were still patiently waiting. Asked one of the servers if we could order but she said she wasn't our server so she could not help up. Waited around 15 more minutes before giving up and walked out. Two girls came in and sat at the table right next to us and were served immediately as well. Just rude and mean spirited. I had an interesting experience when I came for Taco Tuesday, which also happened to be on National Taco Day. They had a deal going on for 99 cent tacos, which sounded too good to pass up. The offer was ending at 9pm, I arrived by 7:45 and was kind of nervous in the beginning. I was waiting to be seated and was told wait times were incredibly long due to the popularity of their offer. Regardless, I stayed and chose to wait it out. Maybe like 10 minutes into waiting, the waitress informed me that wait times are back to normal and I was able to get in and out in less than hour. The tacos were really good for the price, I tried all their flavors and found the asada and chicken to be the best. The only good part of our visit, the hostess was helpful and friendly. I can't say the same for the waitress. She offered chips and salsa, chips were good the salsa was ridiculously salty. I think they forgot to mix it because there's no way the chef made it, taste it and thought it was good to serve. I ordered Cali Fries aka carne asada fries. I made sure to read what's on it. Once I took the first bite I was disappointed. It had a sweet flavor to it. I don't know if the chef made a mistake and put the wrong sauce but no where did it say it had a creamy sweet sauce. It said it had cheese, that sauce did not taste like cheese at all. It had so much of that sauce too. I asked the waitress she had no idea what's in the Cali fries and she told us she'd go ask. 15min past (by the way it was us and another table, it wasn't busy) she would walk by but wouldn't come to our table. It was clear that I was not going to eat that plate. I really tried but could only do a few bites. I had to go to her to get the check. She should have atleast discount the plate. We have been coming to Retro Taco for few years now and when we heard it was now under new ownership we were looking forward to new changes on the menu, drinks and atmosphere, I have to say we love the new menu, drinks and specially the live music you had playing for your Grand Opening! Now here's the one tip or more like a request, we love eating in your patio but it seriously needs a good wash in floors and those trash cans are not very appealing to sit next to, if the patio was to be washed at least once a week it would make it alot more appealing to sit and relax with a good drink. Came here because of a very cool IG post. But...the food and service were garbage. The service was slowww. Took a long time to get food and it wasn't hot when we got it. The waitress and all her coworkers passed by us several times and never made eye contact or checked on us. We needed napkins, never got them. Ordered a margarita, never got it. My family and I heard about this place on IG for national taco day so we decided to go here as opposed to other places where we know the food and service was good. We get here and got seated right away. The place didn't seem too crowded at the time but it took 10 minutes for us to get water. My wife ordered a margarita and she didn't get it. Out waitress never checked on us once. We had to flag her down for everything. I waited for a refill for water more than 10 minutes then I just gave up. My daughters got kids meals with 3 ketchup packets. They wanted more so I flagged our waitress down and she said one minute. She passed us at least 6 times and nothing. The table across from us had a bottle of ketchup so I took that off the table . The vibe of the place seems to cool and kid friendly. If you're looking for good service, don't come here. Decided to go here yesterday to celebrate my sister-in-laws birthday and was pleasantly surprised. The staff was absolutely amazing and so attentive. Especially the bartender Patty who made this new featured drink their putting on their menu. My wife by nature is a Tequila drinker and hates the taste of Gin. After Patty gave us a brief history about the restaurant and its owners. Came to this place based on a couple IG posts that were featuring the Lomo Saltado........well.....Big mistake. The place was dead. I should have turned around and walked out when I saw zero customers in the place despite all the other eateries in the surrounding area being really busy and lively. We were seated right away (being the only ones in the restaurant) and were served chips and salsa quickly but our server disappeared for a while. After what seemed to be 12 or 13 minutes, I was about to leave cash on the table and head out but our server showed up finally. We ordered the Lomo Saltado and Chicken Taquitos. The Taquitos looked decent but the chicken had a mushy texture with odd flavor which, to me, seemed that they were most likely pre-made frozen and reheated. Couldn't make it thru the 3 that come with the order. The Lomo Saltado was just okay at best. The sauce they use was a bit too much for the portion which made the fries mushy and the dish overly rich. This place for me was one of those one and done spots. read more

We saw this place in IG and decided to give it a shot. The Lomo saltado made us go in there. 1st of all, the bathrooms were a hot mess. I mean a disgusting and very colorful mess if you know what I mean. The Food: "Lomo Saltado" was simply fillet cooked on a wok with oil a bunch of bell peppers, mixed with French fries then drizzled with this super spicy green sauce. While the 5 small pieces of meat were ok. the rest of the dish had No flavor, no juice nor appeal. I am from Lima and they will hang you if you call this a lomo saltado. And even though the waitress was super attentive & nice; she didn't know what a lomo saltado was supposed to look like (no training). We felt so bad we didn't ask for a credit, but waitress didn't offer either. Would I come back...nope! Don't advertise something then jeep the patrons with well below average food. Ate here recently the Monday after the beginning of The Festival of Lights. Hadn't been here for 18 months. They ungraded their menu selection., and the design of the restaurant. It's very nice. I think they recently changed ownership. Went on a Saturday around 6 and they only a few parties. Pros: they had a pretty good happy hour menu with tons of drinks and plates to choose from. The location is also great, especially if you are catching a show at one of the theaters. Cons: service was very slow, especially for the drinks. At one point it took like 20 minutes to get a drink. Finding a good margarita can be pretty difficult with most places prioritizing large glasses and lots of sugar but this place has decent ones. It felt like they are trying to rediscover themselves and their audience. It used to be a Mexican food place but seems like the new direction is moving towards a more eclectic feel. The loaded fries were the best thing we had. The BRC was bland and mostly beans. The potato tacos were underwhelming even when we added all three salsa options. This restaurant is new and rebranded as Retro On Main. A lot of the old reviews I think were for the previous taco shop. I had the privilege of attending one of their tastings for the new menu, and the food is amazing. It is a nice fusion of asian and latin flavors. I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a new and unique place for a nice dinner or lunch. My personal favorites are the birria noodles and the bunuelos with ice cream dessert, although you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. They also have agua frescas and a bar as well. All their ingredients are high quality, and it shows in the flavor. They used 24 month aged parmesan for their garlic noodles, 4 hour braised pork belly for the bao buns, simmer their beef bone broth for birria noodles overnight, and marinate the filet mignon so that it's nice and tender. If you are looking for novel flavor combinations and a night of great food then this is the perfect place for you. read more
