Risotto Royale

We were there on Mother's Day, I had what was supposed to be a risotto, it was more like a rice pilaf, nothing creamy, or cheesy about it, it's cost $45 and was called a royale because it was topped with shrimp and butter poached lobster. it was flavourless and like I mentioned was not a good risotto. another person had the vegetable risotto and again the rice was like a pilaf although hers was dryer where I had substantial liquid on the bottom of my plate. Finally the other person had the mac and cheese and added grilled chicken which resembled boiled chicken and also added white truffle mushrooms. It lacked flavour and was made with large rigatoni noodles which would have been fine if the chicken wasn't boiled and it had flavour. Service was alright, our waitress never came to refill water glasses, and although they try and start tipping at 20% the food and service did not warrant that, very lacklustre. Small details like Cleanliness was missed. the table cloth had gravy stains and a glass top put over that. the glass top on the table beside us where someone else eventually sat was partially wiped down but you could see streaks of food left on it. Overall underwhelming and overpriced. Service was mediocre at best.We will it be not be returning with so many other great restaurants around.

I'm from California. Foie grass is illegal there. So of course the first thing I want to eat when we landed was foie grass. I called them in advance to make sure they had it on the menu and within fifteen minutes, we were at their steps of their old train cart of a restaurant. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/resto-gare-bistro-winnipeg?select=mV_TZLSmAx5XW2g59kauiQ#mV_TZLSmAx5XW2g59kauiQ The place was pretty empty (it was 2pm on a Friday) but that made it perfect since this was a linen tablecloth restaurant and we had our baby with us so we had the whole place to ourselves. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/resto-gare-bistro-winnipeg?select=mV_TZLSmAx5XW2g59kauiQ#8-b7wOPBMKBSUFq1nolqZw What we swallowed: POUTINE: My first time having it and they did a splendid job. French fries? Check. Cheese curds? Check. Gravy? Check. Mushrooms? OK! It was a hearty dish but very tasty. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/resto-gare-bistro-winnipeg#lV3VcwsNxj-C2V9bXerH_A BOURGUINON: The beef had a really awesome glaze on it and the gnoochi was melt in your mouth delicious. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/resto-gare-bistro-winnipeg#iEhw6PzVQApigOYn8MSrHw FOIE GRASS: It was so delicious that I savored each bite. Why are we denied such heavenly pleasures? The pate was perfect and the crispy bread with the orangey sauce blended it all very well together. I really could have licked the plate after all the pate was gone (and I really DID want to cry). http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/resto-gare-bistro-winnipeg#hLD0KCgjVpdvyF9eNrjPJQ Our server was super attentive and made sure that we were happy and our baby was happy too. He made the experience very pleasurable and we enjoyed our romantic, quiet time alone in the train cart all to ourselves.

Lovely restaurant with top-notch service, as well as live jazz on Thursday nights! Food-wise, we were impressed with the bread basket and the splendid garlicky olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip. We ordered the cheese platter, which had 3 cheeses (the spicy gouda was remarkable!), amazing grilled focaccia, and some dried fruit and nuts. The platter would have been even more spectacular if there was fresh fruit instead of dried fruit. The steak frites was satisfying. There was a generous portion of fries, which I consumed without shame. The steak itself was remarkably tender even though it was overcooked (we ordered medium rare), probably because it was a thin piece of steak. I had the Walforf croissant sandwich with a tomato soup. The croissant was flaky and delicious! Inside, there was a heaping amount of scrumptious filling that was a perfect blend of chicken, mayonnaise, crunchy pear, and vegetables--marvelous!

Alright, I have to admit that their coup of Chef Bagshaw (formerly of Pizzeria Gusto) piqued my interest to try Resto Gare again. So kudos to management for using him as a draw. The restaurant was packed, which was different from my previous experience here so I assume that others were intrigued with the new chef and menu as well. The new menu debuted mid-late April. It was an older crowd, filled with mostly 40+ and lots of large groups. The menu has some new and some old items - appetizers averaging around $10 and most mains in the $24 range. It's nice to see that this bistro is sticking to "bistro prices" - a few of the bistros around town seemed to have jacked up their prices pushing many dishes into the $30 range. The Bison Manitobain ($24) is a fabulous rich dish of boneless bison short ribs which sits on top of the most flavourful reduced sauce, truffled potato purée, and haricot vert with a few slices of shaved parmesan. This is the type of comforting dish you'd crave on a cold rainy day. The bison short ribs were tender and moist, the sauce was verging on being a bit too overwhelming (maybe reduced a tad too long) but still good. The potato purée had a great earthy taste, care of the truffle oil or butter and was very creamy. The haricot vert were crisp and perfectly done. Pâtes de Homard Marinières ($23) - Fresh Tagliatelle made in house with lobster, spinach, corn in a marinara sauce. At this price, I was surprised to find actual lobster meat in here (mostly claws), not a lot but appropriate for the price. This dish is a massive heaping bowl of pasta, maybe a bit too much. There weren't a lot of spinach or corn and the dish mentioned guajillo chilies, but it's very mild, almost undetectable. Not my fav considering the other choices on the menu. I absolutely love mac & cheese and I am happy that this dish surpassed my expectations! I hate to refer to meals as orgasmic but this dish definitely falls under that category. "Le Mac & Cheese" ($14) serves up a big round bowl of rigatoni, lightly coated with mascarpone mornay, gruyère gratin, roasted garlic and a light sprinkling of chili peppers. I also tasted truffles, a great addition, although it wasn't listed on the menu. This dish is unlike any mac & cheese you've ever had - I think this dish alone deserves 5 stars. The flavours were rich and balanced - I think the truffles really makes this dish, it elevates a typically comforting soul food dish to pure sophistication! The only way to make it even better if there were some real slices of black truffles on it, although then it wouldn't be $14! You can also add on ham, lobster, chicken and tuna if you'd like as well. Our server was very nice and efficient. I think the ambiance is nice, prices are very reasonable, and the flavours have improved dramatically from my previous meals here. A suggestion would be to improve the wine list especially the selections by the glass. There is great potential here so I look forward to more meals here!

Steak frites

Came here for a large family dinner. They were very accommodating with the seating arrangements and our waiter was very attentive. For our appetizers, we ordered the daily foie gras. Unfortunately, the waiter came back out to inform us that they only had the ingredients for one appetizer! It was pretty early (6 pm) so I was surprised and very disappointed. We ended up all sharing one. It was served seared on a crostini with fig jam and balsamic reduction. From the bite that I had, I found it to be quite tasty. Everyone else liked it as well. For my main, I had the steak et frites. The meat came out well seasoned and cooked to a perfect rare, as requested, and the fries were very very good. I was a little sad that the garlic bread under the steak was soggy though. My sister had the crepes de saint jacques and WOW it was good. The sauce and cheese paired very well with the scallop-mushroom filling. My dad had the ribeye special and it was very good as well. I was pleased to see that our steaks didn't all have the exact same marinade, but tasted different. We also had a bottle of moscato, recommended by our waiter. It was very light and sweet. A nice touch.

Friend's 40th: came here with a large group for late dinner. Food: excellent. Service: did not match the food quality. I'll give some latitude for service due to the large size of our party. I would go again.

They serve wonderful food here and enjoyed dining here on my last night in Winnipeg…read more I ordered: Bison Spring roll; which was as simple as wrapping bison meat in a spring roll wrapper and fried. Bison is a very lean meat and I thought it would be jerky like...not so, the meat was tender and the crispiness of the wrapping made for a wonderful appetizer. For my main, I chose the crepe with shrimp and spinach with French onion soup as the side. Lots of delicious bite here and the French onion is the best I've had since my last trip to France (with my family). To top off my meal I had the lemon hazelnut tart with espresso, a perfect ending...the tartness of lemon and the coffee and chocolate notes of espresso! The combo heavenly ! I'd recommend the lemon hazelnut even without the espresso...to die for. The ambience was eclectic and bohemian, and the service made me feel looked after...a good balance of being checked in with and left alone to enjoy my meal. My only complaint is the lack of of obvious parking near the restaurant . There was construction on the street facing the restaurant, I ended up finding parking around the neighborhood. Still though the restaurant was full of people and by the time I left was accommodating more people...I guess they all lived in the area? If you're not from the area parking will probably take away from a lovely experience.

The first time I stopped here I tried the not that expensive Borscht Soup. It tasted more like beets the vegetables more than anything else and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It was very filling. The crab meat salad came with lots of fruit pieces on the side which was interesting. The mashed crab meat concoction in the middle was cold like potato salad or coleslaw salad and it was pretty good. I loved the small pieces of crab meat and potatoes! They were tasty. The lemon soufflé was just okay but hard to stop eating. You can't just take one spoon bite, you gotta eat all of that soft fluffy cream because it's delicious and easy to digest. My friend liked his Pecan chocolate pie and he said the chicken soup was okay but I noticed that it didn't have a whole lot of chicken pieces and noodles in it. Service was polite and happy to answer questions. I found the waitress helpful.

I found the battering of the schnitzel to be a tad too doughy for my likely, but it was easy to remove one side of batter and enjoy a slightly lighter meal. It's a cool spot and it was filled with regulars which gives it a homey vibe. They'll accommodate big groups but it's not really the spot for massive group meals. The dining room has a max cap of 48 and tables are set for 4.

Staff was very friendly and helpful, and the place was rather lively even on a Friday afternoon…read more In terms of the food we shared an order of poutine and their blackened chicken fettuccine. Poutine was decent - not the best I've had in town but not the worst. The portion was very small, and I was surprised to see it priced almost as much as an entree on the bill - they don't have it on the menu a la carte but you can upgrade a side of fries to poutine for $4. Since the pasta dish didn't normally come with fries I asked if they could just do a side of poutine and they said yes (and then charged $14 for it). It wasn't worth it. The blackened chicken fettuccine was disappointing. Our host highly recommended it, and it's a dish I generally enjoy enough I even make it at home. The blackening rub they use had almost no spice, which to me defeats part of the point of "blackened" chicken - the taste was more on the herby side. The noodles themselves were bland and the sauce was almost non-existent - sadly underseasoned. I chopped the chicken up into tiny bits and mixed it all together so that they flavors from the chicken could add at least some excitement to the pasta, but while it helped it didn't quite save the dish. Overall the experience was fairly mediocre. Maybe I should have gotten a burger, but I went with the host's recommendation instead for a dish I normally quite enjoy and came away disappointed. The price of the side of poutine is on me - I didn't ask ahead of time. But it came out to be nearly double what I'd expected for half as much as I'd thought it would be.
