    Sous Sol in Winnipeg, Canada

Food and ambiance was superb. You have to go exploring to find this place as it is set up much like a speakeasy. Go down the stairs from the parking lot side and through the door with the peep hole to find this hidden treat.

Possibly the most romantic restaurant I've been to. Simply adore the ambiance. You just cannot imagine how amazingly cozy and cute this place feels when you get out from the cold and step back in time into this candle lit room with its mismatched plates and quirky decor. And to actually have kick ass food as well?! That's what makes this place worth taking a cab ride. A little hard to locate, since it's unmarked, on the lower level of a office looking building tucked in the back, not facing a street. But the black awning should be easy to spot so go and make a reservation, you won't regret it. The menu is seasonal and should it have the scallop gratin, seared foie gras or beef noisette on there? Order them. Just divine.

Segovia, sous sol, Passero (in no order- just depends on what I feel like at the time) are all my top places to eat at in the city. I just realized I've never written on this place despite eating here for years! Email your reservation - there's no phone number. No signs either just referenced to Seinfeld's Vandelay industries (god what a great episode). Entry is in the back of 222 Osborne - plain black awning & a door marked Vandelay Industries. There is some limited parking in the back but after 530 pm you can park in front of Fia Inc. on Donald street before it becomes pembina. It's a basement restaurant with tons of candles (it gets dim sorta romantic but can be lively too) with lots of quirky decor items like rubber chickens randomly around the room. Menu changes maybe monthly or so. You can eat a good portion of the menu and it won't break the bank like at some places. It means to more French style but there are different inspirations that arise as well. Love their roasted bone marrow, beef tartare, oysters and they make some really good duck and beef dishes. The sides are always spot on and has tons of flavour. Mains will require some sides to share and most mains are low $20s and sides are average $8-10. Most starters are $7-$15. So you can eat really well here and try a lot of dishes. Drinks are their thing with lots of specialty cocktails (even one that comes in a cute little teapot but has no tea :) ). Wine list is very good as well. Service is laid back, cool and knowledgeable. Music is random depending on who's selecting the list so it's super fun. Same owner as Rudy's (downtown). Reservations recommended for sure on weekends.

I could write a two word review of this restaurant and it would be "fuck off". I'm a connoisseur of duck and this is a best duck I have ever had. The chicken liver pate appetizer is a good enough reason to eat here everyday. The beautiful wine list is a good enough to drink here every night. Their house-made coconut marshmallows are sex in your mouth. The Bora Bora shared cocktail is a delicious boozy experience. The smoked duck breast topped with fois gras is an orgasm. Seriously... an orgasm. Even the Simpsons reference on the cover of the dessert menu is a reason to be here every night. I can't believe how phenomenal this restaurant is.

+.5 for service This place is excellent, although not 5-star excellent. I think a 4.5 rating more than justifies the quality of this place. First of all, the directions to find this restaurant...if you're coming from Osborne Street, walk on the alleyway between the 222 Osborne complex (Osborne Junction) and The Village Pet. You'll see a set of doors to your right. Look for the door that leads downstairs that says "Vandalay Industries". When I was there the door was already open, but I'm not sure if that's always the case. Once you're downstairs you'll see a black door. Open the black door, and you're in the restaurant. I made reservations for 5 for this restaurant, since I know it often gets busy at night. However, it didn't get truly busy until around 8pm on a Saturday, which was around the time when we left the restaurant. The menu changes every week, although the restaurant is currently doing a summer prix fixe special for $34, which I find it to be a very affordable deal. I had the beef tartare, crème fraiche fried chicken, and a chocolate paté. I also added a half dozen of village bay oysters. You can tell that every single dish was carefully thought and made with the freshest ingredients. Almost all dishes were great in completely different ways, whether it's by taste, presentation, or innovation. The village bay oysters I probably could do without next time; they're good for those who've never eaten oysters before, but otherwise the sizes are extremely small. If you order the prix fixe special, you might get some free samples. I got two free samples that weren't on the menu, which was quite nice. Although the menu is small and the portions look small, don't let that fool you; it will fill you up. Service was excellent, and the ambience was definitely one of a kind. I think previous reviews have covered it in good detail. Definitely will return for any special occasions. Reservations accepted via email only, as the restaurant is underground and they have very weak reception there.

We came upon this place for dinner by recommendation through a waiter during lunch. Finding the entrance was a bit confusing but we did it! After the last door, you find yourself in a fairly low lit room, brightened by sticks of candles by the tables. If I could, I would love to sample everything on the menu. Instead, as a group of 5, we opted for 2 orders of the fried chicken, calamari, meatballs, potato pavé, and I honestly can not remember the last dish. As a drink, I ordered the grapefruit gin and tonic with rosemary. The flavors were very on point! The spices and seasoning they use draws out the main ingredient leaving you to desire for more.

Simply amazing to a T. Cozy space, strong cocktails, Great wine list and affordable high end cuisine all for about $75 a head including a drink and bottle of wine.

Great atmosphere and amazing food. Ask about the import beer roulette. Prices aren't high and portions are good. Family style for sides.

It's located in a slightly quiet area but despite walking there around 9 and leaving after 11 on a Saturday night there were no issues. No coffee, wines or beers here but there are non-alcoholic drinks and of course loads of cocktails. Most cocktails are $13 and they even offer old school punch bowls (recall the ones our parents owned) except these are smaller ones and need a min of two people for $15 each. Food was just a few cheeseboards - one is a vegan cheese board too. Loved all of the cocktails we tried: - Golden bird - patent 5 vodka, apple jack, golden apple syrup, green strawberry bitters, Malic acid - espresso martini - patent 5 vodka, dogwood neon espresso and Kahlua - Long Island gimlet - patent 5 gin, rum, tequila, house cola cordial, citric acid. This was my favourite - maybe because it has a lot of liquor. Service was laid back yet helpful. Vibe was relaxed and welcoming. Just people having a cocktail and a good time. No pretension. Loved it. I will be back!

A beautiful space in the historic exchange warehouse district nestled into a building that's easy to miss so it gives the feeling of a speak-easy when the giant garage doors aren't open into the street. There is free street parking after 530 but it's in a very walkable neighbourhood with transit nearby. The menu of original drinks is quite extensive and surprisingly reasonably priced for such carefully crafted concoctions ($10-$15 for most drinks). This place doesn't have beer (you can get that around the corner at Nonsuch) and it doesn't have wine. All it has is beautiful cocktails and small plates of food. The atmosphere is super romantic and dark so you'll need a flashlight at night to read the menu. There's really no complaints here but just a comment about the cheeseboard. At $26 it's slightly more than what Peasant Cookery and Smith charged but still a fairly decent amount of cheese. The only thing we would change is the crostini it comes with. It almost doesn't suit the fun cocktails so it would be nice to see them replace it with something thinner and not so hard.
