Well. If it were not for our waitperson Fran it would be excellent. But...we did get Fran so...it was way beyond excellent. Seriously good food, but the service was better. We got Goldeye fish and Mussels and Peach Ricotta and a beautiful French White. The setting was awesome, but the whole staff was chill and welcoming and funny and engaging so we sat and hung with them instead of looking at the amazing ceiling. The Staff: Makes all the difference. In fact we ate at all three restaurants for a progressive dinner. We tipped out $150. But it was Canadian so... Lovely place. Just go. read more

The setting is lovely and the food was terrific. I had French onion soup and the mussels for my main. Everything was flavorful and not too salty, which can happen with those dishes. The service, however, is why the 5th star. It's just excellent without being pushy. Special note: there were people dressed nicely, but they are quite used to people staying in the hotel on their way north to Churchill so many people were ultra casual or straight off the plane. read more

Nice ambiance in a historic hotel in downtown. A fine dining place for a classy dinner!! The live piano adds a good dimension too. The food is good.... quite good!! I had meat lasagna, nicely prepared with thick melted cheese on top and dusted cheese inside. Other day I had New York AAA Sirloin, medium rare. It was perfectly grilled with aromatic flavour, tender and juicy inside... highly recommended!! The service is great. Servers are attentive and prompt. We absolutely love this place and it's certainly not our first time visiting. We decided to extend our Boxing Day fun following an afternoon at Ten Spa located in the Fort Garry Hotel on the 10th floor. We came down to the Palm Room for drinks but after seeing the menu, we decided the prices were much more reasonable than we remembered, so we decided to order food. The place was busy, as you would expect for the holidays. There were two large groups of 12+ and the entire room was full. It's a fairly small round room with most tables seating 2-4 so it doesn't take much to fill up. There are also some seats at the bar top if that's your thing. This place is very classy with a casual and romantic ambiance. We quickly noticed that there seemed to be not enough staff on hand for how busy it was. One server and the bartender working the entire room with occasional help from what seemed like the kitchen staff. We were quite surprised that the staff was managing so well but were also disappointed that such a nice place would skimp out on staff. Drink prices are incredibly affordable and even cheaper than most lounges. Surprisingly. We had the Calabrese pizza which we highly recommend. There was loads of meat and definitely enough to feed two people. We'd love to give five stars, but the one missing is not for service or staff. The one star that can be picked up for our next rating is a challenge for the management. We think this place could be better managed by making sure there is enough staff on hand. And last but not least, there is live music every evening starting at 8 pm. We stayed much later than planned to hear Ron Paley play the piano just beside our table. read more

Holy shit what a difference. I have been coming to Winnipeg for three years now and have frequented the Palm Room since the first day I arrived here. For the first four trips here there was a dude playing piano and singing in the lounge and he was way way too loud. Like I couldn't have a conversation with my guests too loud. And so I avoided the Palm Room on this most recent four month trip to the Peg. What a mistake. They now have this brilliant and talented singer/musician on piano and she is nothing short of wonderful. I mean simply outstanding and worth the cost of a couple glasses of pino noir to hear her croon. They also have a decent wine list and some alright grub. Come for the singer; she'll knock you out. read more

The Palm Room is a classy lounge with unbelievable service. The room is outstanding; high ceilings, lots of windows and candles on each table. They really know how to make a cocktail. The live music was so entertaining. A two person jazz band, a piano player and trumpet player. I can't wait to go back!! read more

Two nights in a row I went for dinner here...both nights were relatively busy. Both nights they appeared understaffed which lead to extremely bad service. First night I had to go to the bar to get my own menus. Second night I had to go to the bar to get my drink. Food service is slow. Totally robotic and providing the bare minimum. Food is basic at best and not with the premium for the dining room. The room itself is ornate and beautiful...but it caters to the masses. This might be the nicest room in the city but there is no dress code and you're dining a foot away from loud tourists in sneakers and track suits. The furniture is rustic and lacks any elegance. Saturday did have live music which is nice in theory but it just lead to people shouting. Older female bartender had attitude. Big pet peeve...no refills on pop and look how much ice is in the glass. I literally had two sips through the straw and that was that. Neither the perogies or meatloaf were noteworthy. The pecan pie was satisfactory but 99% sure it wasn't made at the restaurant...likely Costco. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1....the sourdough bread and butter. Both were fresh and delicious. Wouldn't return. Ever. read more

I tried the Palm Room for sentimental reasons, having done a project on it while in university. The room is beautiful but really needs refreshing, as does the menu. The furniture is uncomfortable which is unfortunate because it is a lounge. The service was somewhat slow even with only a few tables occupied. I chose a kale salad which was fresh but had no flavour. I think it would be a nice place for a cocktail in the evening but it was disappointing for lunch. read more

The Palm Room lounge is located in the Fort Garry Hotel in the lobby. It's a gorgeous room that matches the rest of the hotel's traditional decor. This round shaped room is a large venue of leather lounge chairs and dark wooden tables where one can dine on the small hotel menu offerings or a drink from the bar. There are local musicians that perform nightly in this venue, usually a solo piano player or accompanied by a singer, usually jazz. I enjoy the music here but I find that the music can get quite loud...to the point of distraction at times. But, it's an enjoyable place to go to with a few friends or on a date that offers a more sophisticated atmosphere. The staff seem to be hit and miss there - at times they can be really prompt and nice and but then there are other times where they seem aloof and even a tad snooty. The crowd here also leans to the older segment on some nights...a little geriatric at times but I think it's because not too many younger people know of this place. It's also the kind of place that you can dress up and not feel overdressed yet also walk in with casual street clothes and feel comfortable in. The food menu is pretty generic with its offerings of overpriced hotel food like burgers and fries for $15, salads, chicken fingers, enchiladas etc. I've had the pizza and burger here and didn't think much of it. You can probably get a better meal elsewhere for the same price or less. The dessert menu is okay but I've never had anything that was exceptional there. Sunday brunch at the Fort Garry is outstanding, breakfasts during the week likewise. Why the Palm Room, a gorgeous environment, offers such reliably awful food is a mystery. The menu hasn't changed in, I'm sure, 10 years. I think it's supposed to appeal to travelers who want home-style comfort food: pot roast, meat loaf, and so on. Is that what travelers want? I'm not sure. Why leave home if you can't get better grub than you can whip up in your own kitchen? Food orders, once placed, take forever to appear, even when the place is empty, and when your meal arrives, it may or may not be warm, and it may or may not be as you ordered. I wouldn't recommend spending 31 bucks on the steak if you have a pretty good idea of what "medium" means: the kitchen thinks it means bloody. Everything arrives at the table slathered in some unnecessary sauce - the meat loaf I had recently was inches thick in supermarket style mild salsa, incredibly unappealing, I believe it's the same condiment used to accompany the quesadilla. The "daily vegetables" are chunky and hard, and often serve as a mattress for the main course; I guess stacking is supposed to be fancy or something. The bar staff is pleasant, by and large; it's a pity they're often out of whatever wine you'd like to have, and it's a pity they have to serve you the slop that comes out of the kitchen. It could and should be a great room. Someone needs to do a bit of kitchen-cleaning for that to happen. There's just no excuse for an otherwise good hotel to fall so short of the mark. read more
