The appy was amazing, service was amazing. Such a great spot! The gnocchi was so fresh and delicious. Highly recommend

2 oz Gouda, 1 oz applewood cheddar

Came with my cousin for buck-a-shuck and a much needed glass of wine. It was already 8pm and all of the tables were full and filled with oysters. Fortunately a few people left as soon as we came in, so we were seated in about 3-5 minutes. It did take a while to find the hostess and for the waitress to come to our table. Meal came with soft bread and butter which was perfect for the oysters! Small Cheese Plate (2oz Gouda, 1oz Applewood Cheddar: For $3 an oz, you can choose from an array of cheeses to make your own cheese board or decide on the chefs choice. Gouda was very mild and hard for my liking but the cheddar was lightly smoked and delicious. I also didn't think when I ordered 2oz of Gouda, they would give me two separate ounces. Plate came with nuts, jelly, and pears. Although we order this first, the cheese board didn't come until after the gnocchi! Oysters: Served with a vinegary onion sauce, horseradish and Tabasco. These oysters were a bit small, but well worth it! Pretty comparable to the ones I've had by the Chesapeake Bay near Washington, DC. Gnocchi: Pasta was cooked very well! Roasted peppers, cheese and a dash of pesto was a nice touch for the dish. I also loved how they split the large plate into two smaller bowls! The final tab for 15 oysters, cheese, pasta and two 16oz glasses of wine was about $80. Pricy for a 2 person meal but overall, this place is great for fancy dinner dates or wine and cheap oysters! Will come back for the oysters, but probably not for the cheese.

All great and especially the gnocchi's we're hand made (?) and soft and so delish. The board was great also with the pate! Loved the atmosphere and would definitely go back Pauline was our server and was excellent

+.5 for service Yeah, unfortunately this place fell short for me as well. Been wanting to dine at Peasant for the longest time and managed to take advantage of my parents recently visiting me from Toronto. My friends in Winnipeg rave a lot about this place, so my expectations were quite high. I had the onion soup, mussels and fries, and the bison meatloaf. My parents had the striploin. Unfortunately, the only excellent meal was the onion soup. The mussels were tiny and not juicy at all, and the striploin was overgrilled twice. The bison meatloaf was good, but nothing extraordinary. Given the rave reviews my friends had, perhaps it was an off night. Unfortunately given the wealth of restaurant choices in the Exchange, I'll likely not return here.

    Buck a shuck oysters!
    Cherry Z.

It was a very satisfying dinner! We came on Wednesday night because it was the weekly buck-a-shuck night and I love oysters! From all the oysters I've had in this month (on average I eat oysters once every week), this is the best! The oysters are very fresh and delicious, and it's only $1 each! On top of oysters, we ordered calamari and chicken livers as our firsts. They are very fresh and well cooked. The calamari were soft and chicken livers were tender. Oh don't forget the bread before food! They were freshly baked and were still hot when we got them. They were so good that we asked for a refill. Other than those, my second was Tourtiere with fries. I wasn't so impressed with that because the dish was very salty to my taste.

As always the challenge of whether to round up or round down when considering a rating. We went to rounding down from 4.5 to 4. The main reason being that while we enjoyed our meals, we likely would not order the main dishes again. The service, right from the greeting by the Hostess to our server was excellent. Attentive, friendly, engaged and taking time to explain things without the sense she had to 'run' away to other customers. Nicely done. The drink menu has a full listing of beers but sadly, most of them are in bottles/cans. A very limited selection on tap. The wine selection 'by the glass' however was quite reasonable. Wednesdays is the day to go with $1 oysters. While the oysters themselves are not that big they are very tasty. Add to that their side of horseradish is excellent. A great kick but without being sharp or cruel. By cruel I'm referring to the natural horseradish that clears your sinuses for a month! The bison meatloaf was 'okay'. It was very dense and almost dry. I understand that bison is a very lean meat but still, it was not melt in your mouth tender, rather a bit chewy. The saving grace was the shiitake mushroom gravy. They brought me an extra portion and that made all the difference. The mashed, beets, beans etc were nicely cooked and hot. The Skrei Cod was very meaty and one could really taste the bacon in the chicken bacon broth. While it was nice at the start, it almost over-powered to taste of the cod by the end of the portion. As mentioned, we enjoyed our mains but we would not order again. The sides on both dishes were excellent. We saved room for a bit of decadence, the Chocolate Pot de Crème. It was so rich and scrumptious I can't imagine how one person could finish it and still be able to walk out of the restaurant. One minor point is that it was a bit too 'cool' making the custard a little dense; however the biscotti was to die for. That I could eat all night. Good meal, loved the oysters, and excellent service that all suggest we'll be back to try some other menu items.

I really wanted to like this place as this was one of the few matches made when I compared my to-do-list with my friend's list of recommendations. My friend was disappointed, as this was one of her favourite restaurants in Winnipeg, and unfortunately, the night we dined seemed to be an off-night. We started with the Beef Tartar ($14), which I found to be a bit "over-dressed." Alternatively, I found my Aged Cheddar Gnocchi ($18) to be "under-dressed." The sauce didn't really elevate the gnocchi, which wasn't 'light and pillowy' but rather somewhat dense. My friend had the gnocchi before, and said that it definitely tasted different from before. Sadly, as my first time here, I'd be hesitant to give them another try next time I'm in Winnipeg.

Grilled cheese and fries and an unintentionally dry pickle. The most appetizing thing on the menu
    Neil S.

The whole experience was just ok...which is disappointing as I went out of my way to eat there based on two recommendations. Food was good...not great. Thought the menu selection was extremely limited. Service below par and was very loud even though the restaurant was mostly empty. Would hate to see when it was actually busy. Area isn't great, ambiance ok. Will not return.

It is a good spot to eat while in Winnipeg. We tried many dishes and loved most of them. Chicken Livers - This was the best dish we liked. It was pan fried with red wine, red onion, sun-dried tomato. It was perfection. Duck Bruschetta - It was duck confit, toast, white bean purée, pickled onions. It tasted very good too. Calamari - It was cold when served. The batter didn't have any flavour to it. The sauce that it was served with was tasteless and fresh out of the refrigerator. Very disappointing. Berkshire Pork - one of us ordered this dish and it was huge. By the looks of it, it was sufficient to feed two hungry full sized adults. The server said half of it was fat. My friend enjoyed this dish. King Salmon - this was the dish I ordered. The portion again was huge, but the salmon wasn't seasoned very well. I found it to be very bland. Half chicken - one of us ordered this and found it to be okay. The portion was generous but it lacked flavour and taste. Winnipeg has its fair share of great restaurants, the menu at this restaurant is not as exciting as some of the others. If you're looking for a decent farm-to-table fare which is safe, this is the restaurant you wanna hit. But if you are feeling adventurous/want to be surprised then; in my opinion; this restaurant doesn't has much to offer you. More like a 3.5 star.

    Wednesday night oysters!
    Kendall B.

After visiting twice in the last week, I feel it's about time to buckle down and review. This place is fairly unassuming from the outside, but the ambiance in both the dining room and the lounge is really nice and cozy! Both of my visits were on Wednesday nights. These were strategic decisions as it was ***drumroll please*** $1 OYSTER NIGHT. Yay for oysters! I am a fairly new passenger on the oyster train, but I can confidently say that the oysters here are the best I have ever had in Winnipeg. They bring horseradish, lemon, tobasco, and most importantly this amazing garlic vinegar with each order. I actually want to bottle that vinegar, bring it home with me, and put it on absolutely everything. It is amazing. I also ordered mussels on both occasions. They change their mussel preparation daily, which is nice because the flavour profile of the dish is never the same! Below are the different preparations we tried: Lemon, white wine, onion, and thyme: Very citrus-y anda acidic, definitely needed a creamy component to the sauce. The accompanying fries were the star of this dish. Wouldn't order these again. Beer, cheddar, and cream: Couldn't really identify the beer taste. Very creamy with chunks of white cheddar as opposed to a cheesy creamy sauce. Better than the first time, but still not a dish I would order again. **the fries that come as part of the dish are always delish. I forget which wine it is, but I DO know that it is the very last red on the first page of the wine list. Luis something... It is only $30/bottle and is so easy drinking and delicious. Definitely recommend trying it! Service is pretty standard. No real comments there.

Bison is a very lean meat and I thought it would be jerky like...not so, the meat was tender and the crispiness of the wrapping made for a wonderful appetizer. Lots of delicious bite here and the French onion is the best I've had since my last trip to France (with my family). To top off my meal I had the lemon hazelnut tart with espresso, a perfect ending...the tartness of lemon and the coffee and chocolate notes of espresso! The combo heavenly ! I'd recommend the lemon hazelnut even without the espresso...to die for. The ambience was eclectic and bohemian, and the service made me feel looked after...a good balance of being checked in with and left alone to enjoy my meal. My only complaint is the lack of of obvious parking near the restaurant . There was construction on the street facing the restaurant, I ended up finding parking around the neighborhood. Still though the restaurant was full of people and by the time I left was accommodating more people...I guess they all lived in the area? If you're not from the area parking will probably take away from a lovely experience.

The mashed crab meat concoction in the middle was cold like potato salad or coleslaw salad and it was pretty good. I loved the small pieces of crab meat and potatoes! They were tasty. The lemon soufflé was just okay but hard to stop eating. You can't just take one spoon bite, you gotta eat all of that soft fluffy cream because it's delicious and easy to digest. Staff was very friendly and helpful, and the place was rather lively even on a Friday afternoon…read more In terms of the food we shared an order of poutine and their blackened chicken fettuccine. Poutine was decent - not the best I've had in town but not the worst. The portion was very small, and I was surprised to see it priced almost as much as an entree on the bill - they don't have it on the menu a la carte but you can upgrade a side of fries to poutine for $4. Since the pasta dish didn't normally come with fries I asked if they could just do a side of poutine and they said yes (and then charged $14 for it). It wasn't worth it. The blackened chicken fettuccine was disappointing. Our host highly recommended it, and it's a dish I generally enjoy enough I even make it at home. The blackening rub they use had almost no spice, which to me defeats part of the point of "blackened" chicken - the taste was more on the herby side. The noodles themselves were bland and the sauce was almost non-existent - sadly underseasoned. I chopped the chicken up into tiny bits and mixed it all together so that they flavors from the chicken could add at least some excitement to the pasta, but while it helped it didn't quite save the dish. Overall the experience was fairly mediocre. Maybe I should have gotten a burger, but I went with the host's recommendation instead for a dish I normally quite enjoy and came away disappointed. The price of the side of poutine is on me - I didn't ask ahead of time. But it came out to be nearly double what I'd expected for half as much as I'd thought it would be.
