As tourists to Lisbon we didn't really know where to go for our second night in Town. We checked in with YELP! and saw the great reviews and took a chance . We went early around 5:30 or so . What a wonderful experience! When we got there we rang the bell and were told they could accommodate us after a short wait. The service was exceptional ! My husband had the octopus and loved it. I had the branzino- fantastic! It was the Special of the night - and it certainly was! The wine was great ! You can't go wrong with Portuguese wines. I had the classic Portuguese cocktail and it was so refreshing. Loved the whole experience. The ambiance was cozy and so friendly and attentive . Language was no problem. Frade dos Mares was our favorite dining experience in Lisbon, even more than some of the Michelin Star restaurants in the area. They are not joking when they say that they serve the best octopus in town. The octopus is so tender, and the garlicky sauce along with the potatoes are so delicious. We also ordered the fish of the day which was a grilled sea bream served with sautéed vegetables. The fish fell right off the bone and was so flaky and grilled to perfection. They heard that we were celebrating our honeymoon, so our server gave us some complementary chocolate cups of ginjinha. I highly recommend that you book a reservation in advance. They fill up quickly, and we were lucky to snag a seat. The atmosphere inside is cozy but elegant. My husband has had some sort of grilled/salt dish since we arrived two days ago, and he thought tonight's sea bass was the best -work seasoned and flaky. The sea bream was also well seasoned and buttery, served with baby Yukon potatoes and roasted vegetables that were labeled salad. Friends orders mushroom risotto and eggplant au gratin, which was a tad too saucy for me, but they enjoyed. Each of us had the prawn appetizer to start, which we soaked up every bit of the broth with bread. Lemon meringue was more limey than lemony, but good. We went for specific items on the menu - garlic prawns and clams/amêijoas. The restaurant space is not that large - very quaint decor and feel. Our server was friendly and attentive (his name began with an E). All of the food we ordered was good - interesting take on both dishes being slightly spicy and using lemongrass. The side order of veggies was a star - sauteed hot off the grill it seemed. -1 star is due to the fact our clams dish had 3 unopened clams. At an establishment like this, would expect quality assurance that every clam opens/is edible. Thanks to my fellow Yelper's, we found this gem. We didn't have a reservation, so we went for an early dinner. Luckily we were accommodated provided that we finished our dinner quickly. Nice and cozy atmosphere, service was good, prices were shockingly reasonable compared with similar fine dining restaurants. Absolute stunning experience! We were in Lisbon for the night and found this restaurant while searching for Portuguese restaurants. Ordered the cod and shrimp risotto for entrees with a side of vegetable. While both dishes had excellent flavor, the vegetables were so simple but so flavorful! We asked what was in the veggies and we're told it was simply salt and pepper cooked in olive oil in stages. So good! The restaurant was small but cute. Though we didn't use them, each table had a remote to signal attention from the wait staff if you needed it. At the end of the meal, we were given a small chocolate cup filled with Ginja (sweet and sour cherry liquor). Tasty small treat to end the meal. we'll be back next time we're in Lisbon! read more

Bambie and I indulged in Tuna tartare, sea bream, shrimp rice, various vegetables and a salad. Portions are so generous we could not possibly order a dessert. This was literally one of the best meals and experiences we've had in Lisbon. I could not have asked for a better time. Honestly, when you come into Frade dos Mares, you are not going in just for a meal, but for a whole experience. From the friendly and amicable staff to the ambiance, I will remember the time I had here for life. We ordered the cod, which was out of this world, and the octopus was fantastic (although not the best I had). If I could go back in time, though, I would've ordered the sea bream instead of the octopus just because of how unbelievable the cod was. The prawns here was fantastic, and so was the wine. I see lots of reviews talking about how "classy" or "pretentious" they felt eating here, I'm not sure where you guys have dined but this place is neither. The only thing I will agree on is that this is indeed on the pricier side for a restaurant in Lisbon. This was easily my most expensive meal in the city during my stay. Yes, as the other reviews note, you have to ring a bell to get into the restaurant. If I'm being honest, it felt more tacky than anything else. I thought they had accidentally locked the door when I showed up. I could understand if the door didn't lead immediately into the restaurant but it does, so the intended effect is not achieved. Not only this, but the little remote used to call the staff and indicate readiness to pay the bill is not "bougie." The other reviewers would like you to think it is, but anyone who's ever been to Koreatown in Los Angeles knows that almost every single restaurant there has the same device and many are far from bougie, with a good number offering simple Korean eats. In fact, many Asian restaurants in California offer such a device with many falling into the simple eats category. Alright now that I got that out of the way, I will address the food. I will not be holding what I mentioned above against the restaurant as I rate primarily on food quality because that's what a restaurant is. To start things off, I had the garlic shrimp. These were very good. The sauce they were presented with was great. I believe they came with two red peppers that added a slight kick, which I thought made the dish delectable. However, the fact that there were only two meant I only got this flavor experience twice. I understand that Europe is not as used to spice as America or other countries but I think more red pepper pieces could've made the garlic shrimp truly phenomenal. Next up, I had the octopus. It was tender with good flavor. However, I think the flavor was too dependent on the garlic served when it to ensure tastiness. The octopus did not stand well by itself, it was heavily reliant on the garlic. As with a lot of Portuguese cooking, this was an oil heavy dish. This wasn't too bad for the octopus, but made the potatoes inedible in my opinion. The potatoes were legitimately soaked through with oil and I just couldn't do it. I was assured by my waiter that it was the octopus was most popular dish in the restaurant and that many come here just to order the octopus. High expectations to say the least. I will admit, it was the best octopus I had in Lisbon. It was not however, the best octopus I've ever had, that award would go to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. You might be wondering just how much octopus I tried here. Every single restaurant I went to in Lisbon insisted that their octopus was "the best," so I ate octopus at least once a day while here. I conclude, this was indeed the best octopus in Lisbon, just not the best ever. I don't recommend ordering octopus at other restaurants in Lisbon because I was here for 4 days indicating a 1/4th chance of having good octopus. I'm guessing the number would get worse if I stayed here longer. Lastly, I finished up by indulging in the caramelized pineapple puff pastry. This was very good. The syrup on the plate tasted good which is a rare compliment from someone who is not a fan of syrups. The pastry itself worked well with the pineapple and blackberries underneath it and it was nicely complimented by the ice cream. I am not a fan of ice cream but I liked this stuff. Overall, I would recommend coming to Frade dos Mares. The food likely won't disappoint. It was one of the best restaurants I ate at while in Lisbon. If I was in Lisbon for an extended period of time, I would likely come back. If someone asked me for what the best octopus I had in Lisbon was, I would point them to this place. read more

The waitress, Anabela, was very friendly. They were really nice, we were late and we were able to keep our reservation. The server is amazing! We didn't have to rush to eat. Appetizers: 1. Octopus salad: tender but not chewy, just the right consistency 2. Fish Soup: very rich broth, great for dipping bread 3. Prawns "Frade dos mares": shrimp were very flavorful Entrees: great portion size with flavors of the ocean 1. Octopus "Lagarerio" Style: tender but not chewy, just the right consistency 2. Make a reservation, you probably will not be able to be seated without one, no matter what time you come. Service was great from start to finish, they even offered to split our appetizers for us to share. Came here because we wanted to have an exceptional last meal in Lisbon and this spot was highly rated (#12 out of 4,364 restaurants on TripAdvisor). Made a reservation two days prior for 730, but day of, changed it to 930 without any issues. The area isn't what you'd expect and unfortunately the restaurant is kind of hidden due to construction. You have to ring a bell to be let in. We were early but were seated immediately. To drink, we ordered a red wine to share (my partner wanted red over white despite us ordering seafood). We had the option of chilled red wine or not and I of course went with chilled; it's my preference but I've never been given that option at a restaurant before. To start, we ordered prawns. I'm obsessed on how obsessed Portuguese cuisine is with garlic. Because I Love Garlic and every dish is laden with garlic. The prawns were delicious. We had bread with it (remember, "no free appetizers" so the bread did cost a few €€ extra, but worth it). To eat, I had the cod fish which came with broccolini (my fave), potatoes (so yum), red tomatoes (ravishing), and garlic (practically its own side dish). My meal was absolutely out of this world? words can barely capture how amazing it was. My partner had the tuna loin, and oh my, was it exceptional. This was by far the best meal I had in Lisbon. Just melts in your mouth. We were unable to finish the wine but we were able to go home with it. Basically this is the spot to have a meal at, do not skip. read more

We came to this place on our 2nd night in Lisbon! We were staying at airbnb near by and were looking for a place to eat and this was highly rated on both yelp and google. It did not disappoint! We didn't have a rsvp but got here shortly after they opened and was able to get seated right away. The place is cozy, yet classy. We ordered fish soup to start, octopus croquet, shrimp risotto and sea bream baked in salt. Everything was absolutely delicious. The soup had a great broth rich in seafood umami. Octopus was grounded in the croquet which is something I've never had and we both enjoyed it. The risotto had lots of shrimps and rice was cooked perfectly. And the salt baked fish was cooked perfectly, very fresh and not salty and paired perfectly with cooked veggies. Food all came out fairly quickly and our server was amazing. Places at this level of fancy make me kind of nervous. The call bell for the waitress, the bucket tableside for the water, the silverware arranged out to in by what dish it goes with. I've just had experiences where, when places go overboard with the service, the prices they charge are really more for that than for the food. But not here. As great as the service was (and it really was impeccable) the food was better. My partner kept changing his favorite dish as each new dish came out and superseded the last. We came for the polvo a lagareiro, and this was our final course. It was crispy at the end, tender and snappy throughout the rest of it, and absolutely soaked in olive oil. If I have one quibble, maybe a little too much. But its soft flesh and slippery skin was garlicky and perfectly cooked, like Portuguese seafood almost always is. They split this course onto two plates for us (actually they did this with every course, at no charge, once they ascertained we were sharing) and each plate looked plenty big to be one course. The other courses were much smaller, but packed just as much flavor. I have to rave about the clams "à bulhão pato", which had a broth so particular that the clams themselves almost faded into the background. It was a heavily lemongrassy broth with small red peppers, tons of circles of cooked garlic, and a base that, despite the lemongrass, kept the effect squarely European. We both spooned this broth up with spoons when the clams (and bread) were gone. We also got octopus croquettes, where the star, again, wasn't the (very good) seafood but the accompaniment, which in this case was a bean salad with pickled red and green onions. I can't explain what was so amazing about this. It just was. We didn't bother eating a bite of croquette without a helping of the salad. The fish soup was absolutely tiny, but had a hearty broth that was so thick I almost suspected lentils, each bowl topped with a big meaty prawn. At the end we were offered free ginja (almost a kind of cherry liqueur) shots in tiny chocolate 'cups'. I don't drink, but I drank this. Despite my uneducated first reaction of thinking it was like cherry children's tylenol, I enjoyed the combination of the cherry and chocolate. Mostly because of the chocolate. read more

Moreover, the service offered by Anabela our waitress was outstanding. Of all the meals we had while in Lisbon, this was our highlight. Make reservations and ring the doorbell to get in because the doors are locked, the place is not huge so they will turn you away if you do not have reservations at busy eating times. We shared the prawns appetizer (amazing, seasoned with a slightly spicy and tangy garlic oil) and octopus entree (the best octopus I've ever had-- so tender and also well-seasoned). My husband and I just finished dinner at the wonderful restaurant which unfolded has a metro station under control outside which blocks the view of the restaurant from the street and confused taxi drivers. But once inside you are due for a treat. Service is impeccable and very friendly. Englis is spoken and the menu is also in English. I ordered the prawn appetizer and my husband had gazpacho. Both were very tasty, fresh and well prepared. For my entree I had grilled sea bass(the fish of the day) It was by far the best I have ever had. Flakey, tasty and moist. My husband had cod which he also enjoyed. We shared a bottle of house wine but fair warning to those allergic to sulfites the house red contains them so beware. If we were able to we would definitely eat here again but alas we are heading to Porto so cannot on this trip. But the octopus I've seen so many people rave about was a tad tough, and lacking in flavor. The one from Sacramento was head and shoulders above the octopus entree here. We also shared the codfish served with bits of fried cornbread, which was fine, but honestly the codfish was a bit tough and really would have benefited from a flavorful sauce to mask the less pleasant aspects of the fish. I was surprised that there were no glasses of wine listed on the menu, though the service staff was happy to have us take home the little bit of vinho verde we weren't able to finish.
