    Bacalhau a gomes de sa
    Suor K.

After a long day at the Oceanarium, I was looking for a place for lunch. I hadn't had salted cod in Lisbon yet and it was recommended as a must try. So I found D'Bacalhau on Yelp and was hoping that they do a good job of it given the name of the restaurant. I walked in hoping to get a seat indoors because it was going to rain any minute. While there were 4 wait staff, it seemed like only one person could seat patrons, take orders, or take payment. It took a few of minutes before being seated and once I decided what I wanted to order, it took several minutes to get the waiter to come by. When I asked another waiter, she said the waiter is coming soon. I don't understand why the other wait staff can't assist. I ordered the bacalhau a gomes de sa. The first thing I noticed was that the portion size was massive. It was enough to feed 2 people. I found the meal to be very oily. The chips that were included were oily and soggy. Underneath the fish and the chips was olive oil, again adding to the oiliness of the dish. The first few bites of the cod was fine. However, once you cut into it a bit more, you'll notice how salty it is. The one good thing is that the fish was tender and juicy, so they definitely know how to properly cook fish. However, it would be much better with less salt and oil. The fish is also a bit bony, so watch out when you're eating cod dishes. I didn't enjoy the salted cod experience at D'Bacalhau and the service was lackluster.

Lots of cod selections. Reasonably priced. Typical slow European service. Ask for water, ask for bread etc. Definite get the sliced octopus and the cod sampler

I was looking for somewhere for lunch when out on my own in Lisbon recently and Restaurante D`bacalhau seemed to fit the bill. Looking out of the restaurant to all the greenery of the surroundings was great. The restaurant is low key in design and this is perfect for lunch in a big city. I was hungry and asked my waiter for recommendations. I couldn't pick between two starts so ordered them, both. I chose the mix of codfish, shrimp and octopus with garlic and a codfish ball. The restaurant is renowned for the quality of their seafood and these starters showed the skill of the chef in preparing the food. While on the seafood theme, I saw a main course on the menu that I just had to taste. The Grilled codfish with potatoes in hot olive oil, garlic and onion was as good as it sounds. This is the perfect food when you are in Lisbon. It takes the local ingredients and marries them together. Makes me feel warm inside just thinking about it again! I recommend a trip to Restaurante D`bacalhau just to try this award winning dish. Along with the location and service, this makes it an amazing place to eat in the city. I still had room for dessert. After taking a little time to make my selection, I decided that the tarte de natas ice cream with berries was going to be the ideal way to finish this meal. It was just right - and I left satisfied.

You get to try 4 different ways to eat this codfish. my favorite way was the mac and cheese version but with codfish instead of pasta. chips and codfish- literally- potato chips and creamy codfish. Nice and crunchy. Staff super friendly, and the olives.... drool. For dessert we had the choice of pineapple, mango or chocolate mousse. I'd rank them in the follow order - Highest - Pineapple, followed by the chocolate mousse and least favorite was the mango mousse. The mousse consistency was more like pudding. The place is located near the waterfront, and a small walk will lead you to an amazing view of the longest bridge in Europe.

    Tasty starters!

The cooking seems really home style. No fancy presentation or ingredients.... just regular components in large servings. Prices are very reasonable especially given the portions. I'd recommend the pork and clam dish. Pork was tender and very flavorful. Potato's were delicious. Main complaint was that all 3 dishes had lots of potatoes. Staff speak English.

As usual, we are presented with several dishes of appetizers (olive, cheeses, bread) as we sit down. It's just the custom, not really a ploy to cheat customers, though I know many customers feel so. Just let the waiter know what you will like to keep, and he'll take the other dishes away, no hash feeling. Usually these appetizers are listed in the menu as well, so the cost is not necessary a surprise. Anyway, we decide to get the Açorda à Alentejana, the classic soup from the region made with bread, loads of garlic, finely chopped coriander, and poached eggs. It's a light soup, garlicky and definitely great for a cool night or if you have a cold. I couldn't decide between the Porco à Alentejana (pork w clam) and the stewed lamb, but ended up with lamb. The broth is lighter than I expected, but the lamb is very tender, and you can tell from the bones it's a really young lamb, so it's a good thing they keep the seasoning light. They have many wines from the Alentejo region, including some half bottles, we ended up with one that's €6.50. Quite good, with notes of dried plums, though a bit strong for the dish itself.

Tourist trap is when they offer bad food at high price, so I won't call this a tourist trap. You probably can venture to some neighborhood fish restaurant for a better value, but otherwise, you won't be disappointed with the selection and preparation. Near the entrance they have a display case with all the fresh catches. We skipped the shellfishes as Cervajeria Ramiro is our (and the world's) favorite, and we doubted that this place can rival it. Though of course, here you can skip the hour's wait. Hubby was hoping to get the dover sole, but it was not available. We tried another flatfish, turbot, which was expertly grilled and then filleted at our table. Sides are traditional potato and greens.

I should've known better, being in Portugal and all. The Legumes soup was honest and right, but when the octopus rice (a soupy rice dish) arrived, I was taken aback by the tenderness of the meat, the texture of the rice and the combination of flavors. Surprised not to see this place on Yelp (or T.A.) I decided to add it. A Gem for a very dim sum!

A nice experience from a somewhat undiscovered place…read more... Our last night and layover in Lisbon, and when searching for a nearby restaurant to the Moxy Lisbon Oriente hotel, this place came up. Not a lot of reviews, but they were positive and this place was within a 5 min walk from the hotel. So why not - and glad we did. Walked in at the 7 pm dinner opening, and the dining area was a neat, white table cloth setting, but with the dinnerware placements all set up with (potential) wine bottles on each table! In addition to this, had many other wines placed all over, so it looked like a wine shop almost! Almost paradise for a wineo! Menu with a somewhat limited selection came written on two 33rpm vinyl records, which was neat. So we ordered a Table Mix (recommended by the server, beef with rice dish), Rooster fish (no idea what that was but the server highly recommended it), and some fries. Bread also came with the always great tasting European cheese, olives and butter. I asked the server to recommend a great tasting Portugese wine that would go well with the food we ordered, and shortly thereafter, he came with a bottle. I have to admit my instructions were a bit loose, did not give any other parameters, and had intended to be just a glass. But admittedly having a REALLY big glass of wine at the hotel just prior to walking to this restaurant, my already affected brain justified this bottle by "heck, this is our last evening in Portugal, our last chance, I will share this with my wife, and I drink something I will never find in Hawaii." So I gave him yhe green light to open the bottle... and it was great! (Price was 68 euros, much more than I anticipated since a lot of Portugese wines are inexpensive), but I did not specify nor check...but heck, I TOTALLY enjoyed it! Food was really good, fish was fried, white, flaky and perfectly seasoned. Beef was also perfectly seasoned. Rice stew dish was so-so. So if you're in the eastern side of Lisbon, look this place up and give it a try! For me, an experience to chalk up!
