On December 31, 2014, I got up early, and walked to the Catacombes in Paris. I got there after 10 am and lines were around the building. Guess I should have paid more attention to when to get there. Apparently well before they open at 10 am. I had bookmarked places to eat in the area and Marty's was about a 30 minute or so walk down Aragon street to Gobelins street. While walking to the restaurant you will come across a prison. Looks interesting but I couldn't find any details on it. The restaurant opens at noon and luckily there is some nice shopping in the immediate area. As well as a marche (market) de la rue Mouffetard. You can't miss the signs in the center, at the roundabout. Great market and don't miss it if you are in the area. Got back to Marty's at noon. Looked closed but I walked in alone and asked for a table. Wow, what a place. Takes you back in time, very old school, sophisticated, and playing jazz softly in the background. They had a 40 euro set menu that I chose. BEST meal I had in Paris. Just perfect from the food to the setting. You are first given some warm bread. I started with the oysters. They were OK. Not the sweet oysters from the west coast like Tomales bay, or the briny kiss of east coast oysters, but plump and glad they came with lemon. I probably should've asked for tabasco. Next was the fried sea bream. Absolute perfection. Light lemony butter sauce, some veggies and the freshest fish, truly delicious. Service is good, no pressure and my waitress spoke some English. Mind you by now it's nearly 1 pm and I still have the entire front area of restaurant to myself. For dessert I had the pear tart. Wow, lovely cookie crust, custard, pears and served with ice cream. Great presentation for each and every plate. So if you are in the area, and want to splurge a bit, enhance your calm, have lunch here. A really memorable experience. read more
