I sat here for nearly an hour and for a Thursday afternoon I was surprised how few cars stopped in the entire time I was parked - although it appears very old the grounds are very well maintained and there are a few concrete pavilions with picnic tables and charcoal grills. It reminded me of the family trips we would take when I was a kid and mom packed sandwiches and drinks instead of us driving through a fast food restaurant so it's kind of nostalgic that way. These places are our tax dollars at work so you might as well use them when you need a break...

We stopped at the Great Lakes Service Plaza in Broadview Heights (6/5). Ohio has really nice rest stops! Nice buildings, a variety of fast food spots, ample parking, pet friendly areas, clean bathrooms, and lots of travel/tourism info. The Great Lakes Service Plaza has a pretty good Starbucks if you need a caffeine fix on the road.

Whelp, all the pumps were cash only so thankfully I had 10 bucks on me. Many others were not so lucky and drove away in disgust. Speaking of disgust, half the bathrooms were out of order and all were dirty. I was also craving a salad for dinner but I wasn't gonna pay 12 bucks for a tiny caesar salad at the Panera inside this travel plaza so I left my visit here with only 3 more gallons of gas in the tank, no dinner, and probably some dirty toilet paper stuck to my shoe. But I didn't pee my pants so I'll give this place 2 stars.

On the right is a food court: Starbucks, Auntie Ann, Burger King and Panara. This location has several vending machines near the restrooms and a few game machines near the trucker lounge/family restroom. A water fountain near the parking lot entrance has a bottle filling spout. An ATM machine is also in this area. Restrooms are clean and mostly automated, with hooks low on the stall door and the toilets are low to the ground so good for kids. There are two rows of stalls and sinks with diaper changing station is at the end of each row. Handicap stall has a child seat. Plenty of parking for all vehicle types. Cars on one side of the building, trucks and RV plus car over flow on the other. Gas pumps for cars are near the highway. Gas pumps for RV's and truckers is at the side. Windshield washer is available near the pumps. No receipts from pumps - get one inside the tiny shop near the pumps where they sell a few items. Things I missed: I looked for, but did not see, EV stations in the parking area which OH often has available. Doesn't mean they aren't there. Check your EV app for location information if you are in need. I did not verify a pet area but there usually is one at the OH rest areas outside the food court where you will also find tables. This place is either new, or really well-maintained…read more There are trails, and bike trails, and the canal remnants, and an entire house/tavern/shop that has been converted into a museum with all this information about the canals. There were rangers here and they were super friendly and helpful, and good with kids. I hate people and I was thoroughly impressed. We got to see a snapping turtle laying eggs, and there's an actual lock that was restored so you can basically see exactly how it works. I bet they move that thing sometimes to show people. I didn't ask them to, but I bet they do.

The Canal Exploration Center is a great stop in Cuyahoga Valley. It does, however, have limited…read morehours so be sure to check in advance. The location is very neat - it is housed inside of a historic shop & tavern and now features two floors of exhibits and a small gift shop. They have also fully restored Lock 38 that sits right outside of the center, and it is neat to go out and take a look at this, as well. The staff here were really kind and helpful, and we enjoyed chatting with them. There is a nice combo of reading, video, and interactive elements to the exhibits here.
