When visiting Mitsuwa, you must stop by Re Leaf! I always get a matcha latte (sweetened), which is ten times better than Starbuck's green tea latte, and for less! I even get this in the summer since it's just so good. Also, the soft serve is delicious. I like to get the matcha/vanilla swirl as it's a perfect combination. They also have a variety of ice cream including flavors like red bean and ginger (which I sampled... not a fan. Might be an acquired taste). Make sure you bring cash! read more

Matcha soft serve. I mean... They offer a lot of ice cream varieties, but everyone comes for the matcha soft serve. Be warned though, this isn't your typical matcha "flavored" soft serve; they mean business. Unless you really like matcha, I'd suggest getting the matcha and vanilla swirl because the matcha is very strong in the soft serve. It's not too sweet, and has the bitter edge that matcha does. If you normally drink matcha latte's, or get the green tea frappe from Starbucks (I know who you are), I'd get it paired with the vanilla. To take it up a notch, make it a parfait! On the "Shake" list is "chocolate". Sounds good by me. I order one. Out of chocolate ice cream. Ugh. So I peruse the remaining flavors, one of them being ginger. Hmmm, ginger shake? Sure why not. Matcha jelly at the bottom, vanilla ice cream, red bean paste, pieces of yellow cake, mochi balls, red bean paste, matcha and vanilla soft-serve ice cream, whipped cream, and a butter cookie. Utter deliciousness. I'll have one for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There's also the cream anmitsu that could easily be a strong contender. I stopped by Mitsuwa to explore the place and thankfully I discovered Releaf. They didn't have their matcha soft-serve ice cream ready on the first time I stopped by but because of I my love for matcha, I made a second trip the next day. The store offers a variety of ice cream flavors but for the soft serve, the flavors they have are: vanilla, matcha, and vanilla matcha. I spent the first half slurping on spicy miso ramen from Santouka and the second half tackling an enormous matcha-vanilla soft-serve swirl cone that Jelena graciously paid for (in cash! because she is a baller!). Re Leaf (relief... get it?) is one of the sweet outposts in the food court and has matcha (Japanese powdered green tea) drinks/lattes/soft serve... and SO MUCH ICE CREAM. Came across a photo on Instagram and thought of trying their dessert here since it was 5 minutes away from my Grandma's house in Des Plaines. I tried their Matcha green tea soft serve and matcha parfait. I love their soft serve ice cream, the matcha green tea was on point! Not too bitter, it was really good and creamy. It was so good, I finished it right away. Next, we also tried their parfait, it's got mochi, red bean paste and croissant cookies, it was also good. I'm extremely disappointed with the green tea soft serve. I ordered the green tea/vanilla soft serve swirl. While half way making my ice cream cone, the girl tells me they've run out of vanilla soft serve ice cream and I may need to wait. I tell her to just make it a full green tea soft serve. One taste of it and I was disgusted. First, it doesnt taste like green tea. I'm a huge green tea drinker and this wasnt even close. It tasted the way durian fruit smells. I decided to give the soft serve a chance and continued eating it. Still didnt taste like green tea. Now, three hours later, I'm burping up the taste of this durian tasting green tea ice cream. The place is inside the Japanese market. We got matcha and strawberry parfaits. Matcha was quite good. It was slightly bitter and nicely balanced with the sweetness of their soft serve. Lots of cookies, mochi, and other toppings were involved. Overall, quite good but not worth the $6 a treat they charge. My bf hates matcha, but he really liked his strawberry parfait. So sad to have to write this--but I struck out twice in the same visit. I went a few weeks ago to order a matcha parfait----boom---sold out because they ran out of mochi. About 20 minutes later, I decide ok, if I can't have the matcha parfait---how about just the match soft serve. I am so glad I found this place- yet so sad I didn't find it sooner! I was on yelp and I searched "matcha" and came across this place. When I arrived I didn't see a sign for this cafe and I almost drove away but quickly realized that it is located inside the Mitsuwa Marketplace. We got the matcha parfait and the matcha soft serve- both of which were amazing. The parfait had both the matcha soft serve (i substituted the swirl for just plain matcha) and matcha ice cream. The ice cream had more of a vanilla flavor with a subtle matcha flavor and was more sweet while the soft serve was bursting with a bold matcha flavor- but together it was a perfect balance in the parfait. There was read bean paste on the top- which is one of my favorites. There was also some mochi, pound cake and cream in the parfait. I am in the midst of a great bout of bawling that Indy does not have something as wonderful and matcha-centric as this godsend. Matcha parfait with mini-pastry cookies (if out of mochi I guess) azuki, gelatin cubes, soft serve and real ice cream. This is perfection. The matcha soft serve is indeed very matcha-y and has a rich flavor. The hot/cold drinks are like those you would find in a cafe but instead of espresso, they use matcha. Genius.
