Wonderful if you're into green tea. If you just want smooth matcha essence get a soft serve swirl. If you want more textures and flavors get a parfait. Whenever I go to Mitsuwa, I have to get a green tea soft serve. I just have to, it's delicious. The matcha is so aromatic, and the deep green cream has these little flecks of deeper green that make it look like it might be grainy, but the texture is just creamy smooth tea. After feasting on some dim sum, we tracked on over to have a green tea and vanilla softserve swirl cone. How can you beat that for less then $2.50? I was indecisively eyeing the green tea ice cream, the lychee ice cream, a potential green tea-lychee combination, the red bean ... but the storeperson was super helpful. "Do you like green tea?" (Do I, ever!) As soon as I said yes, he immediately recommended the green tea soft serve, which I obligingly ordered. GREEN TEAAA. One of the features of this joint is a Sanyo-made automatic Matcha dispenser...for those of us who love fresh-matcha flavored everthing, the Sanyo Machine is indispensible. One of my favorite treats at re leaf is the green tea parfait, which may in fact be my #1 favorite frozen dessert in Chicagoland for its contrasts of textures, flavors, and green and white colors. Here's what's in the green tea parfait: Whipped Cream, yellow cake, Matcha, Matcha syrup, ice cream, soft serve, and mochi (sweet pounded rice cake). There's also a little crunch to it. No matter how full I am, I always have room for a Re Leaf green tea parfait, which is as much like the parfaits of my Japan-summered youth as anything I've ever had. Japanese style as you can tell since it is located in Mitsuwa - the japanese grocery store - i believe the biggest japanese grocery in Chicago area. I used to addict to their iced green tea + red bean drink, i order it almost every other day as my after lunch dessert. Now since i work for another company, I don't always visit Mitsuwa, but if i do i'll always order a drink or their parfait before i leave the store. Since it opened years ago we have driven an hour and always been sweet and polite and grateful and excited. This week we brought guests from out state for green tea ice cream milkshakes. For my 65th birthday today we brought our 21-year-old grandchild. The young sweet workers both men and females are always great but today I gave the order and paid and gave it to a taller young man in a plaid shirt. I said take your time don't worry I'll be back later and when I came off I saw it was different but I just kind of said oh it's a little strong. Not much. He got extremely aggressive and extremely rude and extremely hostile and started telling me over and over Don't you ever order this again and don't you ever ever you order what's on the menu this is not on that you can't do this you can't come here. If you ever try to come here again you better order on the menu. I started to cry behind my mask and I said why are you doing this to me? He wasn't polite. He did not say please or thank you or sorry. I said I always get the same thing for many years they always ask what to make. If they get it wrong we just fix it or I just take it no big deal. I said why are you doing this why are you so extremely aggressive and so extremely rude and so extremely hostile? It was so shocking and so uncomfortable and unbearable. I told him I have people who follow me on Yelp and Google and I don't believe I've ever given a negative review to anybody before. He remained unbelievably horrible. I'm going to call the star manager. It was shocking. And so disappointing and so embarrassing and humiliating. Completely unexpected and completely uncalled for and completely unsolicited. By the way, they are frequently out of items and I attributed that to Corona virus and didn't care at all. Three visits ago I saw a young woman with two children yell at the young man who is working there because they were out of things which he could easily see were empty and the ice cream department. Of course I defended him. When she was gone I just said I feel so bad for you. read more

We were at Mitsuwa to try Santouka's ramen for the very first time. Before spotting the ramen shop, the sight of an icecream shop stopped us in our tracks. The shop had a freezer full of asian icecream flavors such as lychee, mango, green tea, red bean, taro, and some others, but the green tea matcha and vanilla swirl soft-serve on a waffle cone was what we wanted. Flavors when I was there 9-7-07: Plum, Black Sesame, Red Bean, Ginger, Mango, Lychee, Green Tea, others. The green tea was especially delicious. The black sesame reminds me of Japanese pastry desserts coated in sesame seeds. However, my friend said it reminded her of bulgogi beef dish, with the sesame flavoring and gave her a "greasy" feel to her tongue. I loved it, though... Matcha soft serve ice cream: true matcha taste... not for those who dislike tea flavor! HIGHLY recommend the MATCHA PARFAIT! Located inside the Mitsuwa marketplace, this ice cream shop is somewhat unique for the Chicagoland area. Sesame, red bean, lychee, mango, and green tea are some of the flavors that can be found here. They also have matcha parfait here. 2 scoops for $2 and they give you a decently sized scoop. I had a scoop of sesame and a scoop of lychee on my latest trip here. Together, the flavors were a slightly odd combination. Doable, but not ideal - my fault. Eaten separately though, the entire game changed. The sesame ice cream is really awesome. Had ground up sesame in it. I kind of love sesame, so maybe for regular folks that sentence should just read: the sesame ice cream is awesome. For whatever reason, when I was eating this with the ice cream cone, the mixture of the two was a really great combo to me. The lychee ice cream is also pretty tasty with little bits of lychee jello stuck in the ice cream. I think people nowadays are more used to seeing lychee flavored everything, everywhere so even though it was good, it wasn't exceptionally special or anything like that. If you want to try some ice cream with Asian influenced flavors, give this place a shot! read more

I have not tasted the ice cream at this place yet, but the strawberry matcha is AMAZING. I wish we have a ReLeaf in California, but we do not. The closest thing we have to ReLeaf is Matcha Love, but their drinks are not as good. I would highly recommend getting the strawberry matcha even though they do not have it on the menu #secretmenu. My friends got the mango matcha and it was alright for my taste. Last time we visited this place, I got the matcha matcha and it was too strong for me. So definitely strawberry matcha. read more

Cons: Cash Only. Pros: Matcha (think concentrated green tea powder. Dark Green, none of that weak-a** light green beverages that claim to be green tea - ahem, looking at you starbucks.) Parfaits. They do it right. Azuki, mochi, soft serve, pastry/wagashi/okashi to balance it all out. I can't stress how important those items are when enjoying a dessert. A whole menu full of matcha! Get it with whip/con panna, hot/cold, sweetened, whatever. I usually get mine iced and unsweetened (sometimes a little sweet and low). Hit the store for some okashi to balance it out if you like. read more

Fellow Yelpers are right.... The green tea parfait was amazing. Mochi was super soft and the whole combination with red bean, soft serve and ice cream is heavenly. Will note that ice cream on the bottom can be quite heavy... I probably would've preferred soft serve instead. That's just me though as I typically eat light and can't take too much cream. My favorite place to go for matcha soft serve! After a meal in Mitsuwa food court I always have to stop here to satisfy my sweet tooth. reLeaf has a wide range of menu from normal tea and boba tea to soft serve and parfaits. The matcha soft serve has very smooth texture, not too sweet nor bitter, creamy and refreshing. You can also do a combination of half matcha/half vanilla soft serve, or 100% vanilla (which I haven't tried since I always get the first two). The iced matcha tea is also delicious but could be a tad bitter for someone who likes their green tea generally sweet. Great service, ok price (around ~$3 for soft serve and tea, $6 for parfait), and very consistent quality. read more

The drove the 10 minutes in this crazy Chicago weather we are having to Re Leaf at 7pm because yelp mentioned how good it was. Unfortunately, they were closed even though it was stated in many locations (on yelp, a friend, the website, and I know when food court hours are) that they close at 7:30pm. But I wasn't mad or frustrated I knew I would just go again at an earlier time frame. Which I did today. I get there I look at the menu. A bit freaked out at first because I couldn't find the Matcha Parfait everyone was mentioning. The two guys working thankfully were too busy making something similar for another customer to even notice I was there. Finally, I knew the infamous #19. I ordered it but the guy had said they ran out of the mochi. I was perfectly fine with. Being that this was my first time, its not like I knew if I was going to miss it or not. He ordered to put more cookies, I was fine with that since I love cookies! In the end the cookies were the best and only good part of the whole thing. The soft served green tea was good but I've had better other places. It had a powder flavor aftertaste. This powder flavor aftertaste just got worse as I went down the long cup they gave me. Long triangle cookie: Dry but good dry. It soaked up some of the green tea soft serve. The combination made it tasty. Green Tea soft serve: TOO soft! The thing completely melted the second I walked away. Other than the lack of temperature I wouldn't mind getting a cup by itself. Cookies: They were REALLY good. The best part of the whole parfait. Mochi: Can't comment since I didn't get the chance to try some. Red bean: NOT GOOD. I love red bean ice cream but this red bean paste had this fake extract flavoring. NOOOOT GOOD! Sour Cream & cake (?): It was literally sour cream from Dean. The only reason I know is because I saw them drop the whole cart on the floor after they were done putting some on my parfait. The cake was dry alone but with the sour cream it soften it up a bit. I got over it once I got the layer beneath. The vanilla ice cream with green powder: You might be saying "well are you sure it wasn't the green tea?" No, no it was vanilla with green powder. It was nasty. I would rather have more of the green tea soft serve that you put on top. Get rid of the powder completely. It was literally baby powder with green coloring. Ewww. More green powder: =( Some gel and green square pieces: The gel was the far most disgusting thing in the entire parfait! The taste...what taste?? It was the basic gelatin you use to make jell-o with! If you consume more of it just to figure out the sole purpose of its existence in the parfait you starts to taste like animal bones. You know the main ingredient in gelatin. (haha) The green square pieces tasted the same. Purely no point of it. If its suppose to be authentic, I am deeply sorry but that just can't be how it truly suppose to taste like. If I ever go back I will not get the Matcha Parfait but I will go to Hippo and get the black sesame custard, which I should have gotten instead! read more

It's matcha tea with red bean and vanilla ice cream on top. They didn't have soft serve so they used a scoop of vanilla instead. It didn't melt smoothest into the drink, but it still tasted good. New York City is getting a lot of credit and press lately that they have the very first matcha cafe in America, but they're wrong. Maybe they have the first "stand-alone" matcha cafe, but Re Leaf has been around for years thank you very much. I love this place. They have authentic matcha that comes out fresh from a machine that converts the leaves into your hot or cold beverage. I prefer the hot matcha shots myself--so good. They also have an array of other drinks and treats using the matcha, including ice cream, and the service is always friendly! Go here now. However, today I noticed that the guy who prepared it (Not the usual person working there), didn't use a glove when he put in the cookies and the mochis like the others. whenever i visit mitsuwa, (like every week!) for scrumptious porky ramen soup, i do not ever forget to visit re leaf to get matcha azuki, i think is the name of treat i always get. it is comprised of matcha tea, with sweetened red bean paste, and vanilla soft serve. you mix everything up and it tastes AMAZING. sort of like clean green tea + slight sweet touch, and super sweet when you chew on red beans and silky and milky when soft serve starts to melt and blends in with tea. be aware this thing can keep u awake too. read more
