This is my go-to REI and I often find myself here on accident with no intentional shopping list! This type of experience has occasionally led to me buying the best gifts due to the ever-present associates that are always waiting (and asking) to help! The staff are outdoor-experienced and knowledgeable and friendly, but if you like shopping without being bothered, you may want to get creative or hide when you see them, because they truly are trying to help! (Yes, the membership is worth it...) The value is great and sales are typically pretty good (in-store and online), but what's really great is the dividend members get at the end of every year (like cash back on purchases), PLUS the really lenient return policy, they know you have to try some of this before you know it's a good item for you - gotta love the co-op! Note: they recently when bagless, apparently except for the holiday season as I saw they had paper bags for those gift-purchasers this weekend. So, in a non-holiday season, if you plan on grabbing a haul (like I do, apparently), you'll want to bring your own bag(s) or plan to take a few trips to the car! Quick review to call out great customer service and an easy returns process! This is not my local REI, but I stopped in for a post-Christmas return when a gift didn't fit quite right. We were able to hop in line at the cashier, and make our return in less than 5 minutes. This might not seem like a big deal, but this simple transaction during the holiday hustle and bustle is worth shouting out. We had a paper gift receipt for our return, but you can also use a barcode in the REI app if you're a member of the Co-Op for returns. P.S. If you're not a member of the REI Co-Op, it's well worth it to sign up. It's a one-time $30 fee, and the benefits are great, even if you only shop here once or twice a year. Always a great place to visit for the brands that you can't find elsewhere. Kuhn, Cotopaxi, Patagonia, ... etc. They carry a smattering of these products based on the seasons. We've been coming in to purchase items for a trip to Alaska, however in June at a Texas outdoor store, there isn't much in the way of cool weather wet gear. Staff was more than helpful. Stock for spring and summer items were plentiful. Really like coming here, if even just to look. read more

The store looks like it's closing or like a bed bath and beyond once you walk in. Just a whole lot of nothing, brands are ehh but the selection is less than mid especially for the area. I came in for ski gear and they had nothing but one pair of goggles that were returned and definitely were already used for skiing from the previous purchaser. Gave a star because at least the staff was nice and helpful but honestly kinda feel bad bc it's just not quality and a custom tailored store. Whoever the buyer is for REI needs to go. The bike shop will tell you they can fix your bike in 2 days. Then, 2 days later they say that haven't looked at it but will have it done in a day or 2. Then they will tell you 3 weeks. I understand being busy but lying when dropping it off is wrong because I wouldn't have left it there if I knew they were backed up 3 weeks. read more

Not being a native Texan, is it the norm for a salesperson to insult you to your face regarding where you are from? I'm not suggesting racism or the like, but the fellow working the bike shop took multiple opportunities to insult my place of birth (another US State). Apparently he doesn't care for the state I am from, which is fine. To each his own. But to repeatedly make sarcastic cutting remarks under the auspices of humor is not appreciated. Keep your opinions regarding the geography of my birth to yourself and sell me bike equipment. I may be an REI member, but I don't know if I'll go back to this location for bike service. read more

let me begin by saying that I was incredibly spoiled living only 10 minutes away from the Denver flagship store. I had at least four REI's each within a 10 to 20 mile radius of me. So when I go to locations in Texas, I'm always a little surprised by how small/average they kind of are. The store layout is pretty standard, but it was a bit difficult to find a few items that I was looking for. Their bike helmet selection is pretty small. but on the plus side, the staff, we're super friendly and tried to help. All in all this is probably a 3.5 star location read more

So I used to hate going in REI. Why? I knew I was going to bugged to join the REI Membership program. Good grief, leave me alone. What I didn't know is that a) It's practically free ($20), b) It's lifetime, and c) my wife joined without telling me. So now I just say, "Already a member." and they leave me alone. So REI is a bit pricey, but it is a co-op, so if you join, you get a percentage (which is typically 10% back on eligible REI purchases). So factor that in when shopping. But what gets the 5th star in my book is all the free programs, lectures, seminars and instructional meets, most of which are free (to members). So factor that into the membership cost. You can really get your monies worth! Plus, everyone really seems to know their stuff. Staff seem to like what they do, on and off the floor, and are friendly and helpful. Lastly, the members only garage sale can net some real deals. I've never been, but it's on my list. Bottom line: Way cooler than I once thought! read more

Not happy with the bike service. Brought my new bike to REI to be put together. Paid $75 plus a fee to join so around $94. Had to borrow neighbor's SUV to bring bike there and get it home. Fenders and brakes are rubbing on tires and tires did not have recommended amount of air. Now have to figure out how to get it back there for fenders and brakes to be fixed. (I should have rode it around parking lot but the REI service person assured me it was test ridden.) 6/2/19--updated review from 2 to 4 stars because I brought the bicycle back to REI and the REI staff (young woman with long brown hair) fixed the bicycle on the spot, no questions asked. It took her about an hour. I was really impressed. read more

An employee with dehydrated kale stuck in hit teeth and tidy whities in a panic said "sir you have to be on the other side of the rope!" The rope was at least 8' away from the shoes?!?! WTF? It takes a while to checkout no matter what time of day you go because there are always people shopping and only a few registers. I don't like the layout of this store, I found it more difficult to find some items than other stores with simpler logistical layouts. Their membership program is awesome you get members discounts and access to their garage sale which is one of my favorites you often find good deals. There are so many reasons to shop at this REI. I would even chose this one over several others in the area just based on the customer service alone. I love their shoe selection and all the different clothing options, but most of all I love all of their camping and outdoor gear. Once we even purchased a rolly-polly miniature circus or playground that my daughter absolutely loved. My last major purchase there was their REI brand Cots. Brought my bike to their shop to get some volume spacers put in, tested it and found out I needed more spacers. Came back to get them put in and the tech told me my lower shock bolt is stripped out. Employee doesn't own up to stripping the bolt out. $12 bolt which is on back order from manufacturer, so I spent $50 online to order a bolt kit to replace this. Didn't make a big deal out of it, but I won't be back. read more

First time in the store. I'm 64 and finally retired. Going to get back into backpacking. I needed a sleeping pad and a water purifier. I was helped by the coolest old dude (7 years older than me so he's OLD, lol). I didn't write down his name but he was chocked full of helpful information. He led me through choosing the right equipment for ME, not some generic individual. I wish the store was as big as the one up on LBJ was but I loved going. It has been a while so thought I'd up-date. Went yesterday to get a medium sized backpack. I am always amazed at the customer service at REI. Big box hardware store could learn from these guys. Knowledgeable and responsive sales people who can help you with whatever product you are looking for. Long story short, I'm now the proud owner of a new Osprey Kestrel 48 pack. After questions about how I'd use it, measuring and discussing different bags, this seems like the one for me. read more

REI is kinda like Heaven. No pearly gates, but beautiful packs, hiking boots, and everything you need for an upcoming backpacking trip. The staff may not have wings, but they know everything there is to know about backpacking and hiking which make them angels to me! I am new to the backpacking game so I had lots of questions. I even had questions about my questions. The guy who helped me was awesome! He patiently answered all my questions, asked a couple of his own questions about my plans and goals, and helped me pick out my very first backpacking pack. He helped me try on a couple different packs and then loaded it up for me to walk around to get a feel for what it would actually be like. He showed me how to correctly, and safely, put it on, how to pack everything, how to adjust it at home if need be, and showed me everything that I needed to know. He took the time and seemed genuinely interested in helping me which I greatly appreciated. I have been back a couple times since, and always had great interaction with helpful staff. The store itself is large and well lit. They have a huge selection of all different types of equipment. REI prices can be a little high, but you get good quality and knowledgeable people to guide you in the right direction. Members also receive a dividend at the end of the year! They also have great sales! I have already bought a pack, water bladder, hiking shoes, and a backpacking stove. I will definitely be back! read more

Southlake REI is great. I took my long-unused road bike to REI bike shop for the first time. Ellis promptly diagnosed my issue, added a wheel liner, and replaced the tube for a fair price. I didn't have to leave the bike! They respect your time. Great product line also. read more

You think if you bought a relatively expensive (for a kid's bike) at REI you'd get one put together with care, checked out for function, and working properly? Think again. Two bike shop millemployees too busy playing grabbass with each other to pay any attention to details. Everything loose on the bike, all needed tweaking and air in tires. Like they just pulled it out of a box. Get better service at Walmart and save $100 next time. read more

Now this is customer service! I bought a new bike online and had some problems with getting the gears/derailers tuned properly, so I randomly selected REI to help me out, because I knew they had a bike shop. They were too busy to get me in on Saturday, but they let me book an appt for today for a quick turnaround. So I dropped my bike off today. They did the work that they had quoted me only about $20 to do, which included a discount because of my Co-Op membership. Then they also did a safety check, tuned my brakes, and took care of a few other small tasks while giving me some tips along the way. They charged me nothing! This is a company that knows that just a bit of customer service will create loyalty. I wanted to tip this guy that helped me out, but he would not accept a tip. I don't share this to imply REI just gives a bunch of free stuff away. But it is great to occasionally get a break, and they created a very enthusiastic customer in me this evening. read more

All of the REI stores I've been to have been great. They are known for their great customer service and it's apparent. Not like how Nordstrom's is known for good customer service and you really just don't like the employees still even though they are "trying to help." REI employees are legit helpful and nice. Haha. No offense to anyone who would take offense *rolls eyes* So this location is across from Southlake town square, isn't that what they call it? I came here at night so there were very few customers and I was able to get help fast. The employees were very knowledgeable and the guy helping me decide on my purchase was very thorough. He explained the different options I had and asked which ones I wanted to look further into. He was not push and really focused on what would work for me. I'd recommend this location to everyone and I will definitely be going back. This store is the largest I've seen (but I've only been to two) and has a huge inventory. I'm sure the employees get commission or something when it comes to membership sales as when I mentioned I was interested, one employee handed me this card with her name and employee number on it. The membership is a one time $20 fee that lasts a lifetime. You get 10% back via dividends on qualified purchases. The main reason I got one, however, was because they could look up all my purchases via my member number and I had no need to hold onto receipts. It was a $20 back up plan in case the back pack I bought did not work out. I have a year to find out so I'd rather not just rely on keeping my receipt safe. The 10% dividends can be used on anything at REI, including sales, or you can get it via a check. When I spent as much as I did on a pack, it would paid for itself anyways so why not. read more

Wow, this was fun. Bad first impression but Tom made up for it. When we got there and walked in we saw associates standing but no one greeted us. We walked over to the bikes, which were just to the right when you go in the door. There were 3 rows of bikes we walked through looking and touching, talking and no one greeted us. I went to check out the hiking gear and the ladies room. Meet back up with hubby around the shoes section and still no greeting. As we walked up the side by the bike section again, Tom steps over to greet us and asked if we were looking for anything particular. I was ready to say no and leave but hubby said we were looking at bikes, because I needed a new one. Tom just started talking to us about what kind, and walked around showing us different things, not selling to us, but educating about the differences. We asked about warranties, then somehow he started to tell us about REI memberships. About REI culture and upcoming events. To conclude our experience, slow start but good finish. I did not get a bike today, not quite dresses for a test drive. But we are now REI Members for life! read more

One stop shop for all of your outdoor needs! They are fully stocked at this location. I came here for some trail running goodies and quickly found everything I needed. Everything was super duper organized. The sales people were ready to help if you needed to be pointed in the right direction. Lots of stuff for camping and even snacks and etc. They also have some cute looking workout clothes. I'll definitely be back as this particular location is the closest to home! Compliment sandwich time!! So this REI is extremely clean, airy, open and very friendly. I was greeted by someone in every department and was shown everything that I could need or want. I could clearly find everything I wanted. I feel like REI without the rock wall is not REI. (And I wasn't even dressed to do it, it's just a fun thing that sets them apart.) REI had everything I was looking for but a very small selection. I guess if I were going for clothes, it would be fine but camping/ survival gear...um maybe not so much. I would definitely go again to see what they have. It seems like they have rocking sales at the end of the season and they have quality merchandise. read more

On our most recent shopping trip to Dallas, I wanted to check out this REI store even though I had a feeling it would be smaller than the Dallas store and it was. Don't get me wrong, I would be jumping for joy to have any REI store in a 100 mile radius of me now. It rates more like a 4.5 but I'm knocking off a half star only because, well, it is a smaller store, which means smaller inventory. I just would highly suggest checking online availability through their website if you are dead set on buying something prior to arriving, it could help but not promising! If you have ever stepped into an REI store it's like walking into the brother-sister outdoor gear world of a Whole Foods. It just seems like those two stores need to be right next door to each other. I mean who wouldn't love going to get your camping, hiking, running, climbing, biking, walking, yoga gear and then walking next door to get some crunchy granola and kombucha? Okay, I'm getting "off the trail"...but you get the idea. Moral of the story: It's truly a pleasant experience shopping here, they basically have you covered from head to toe or from bikes to supplements. I think one of my favorite things about REI is that they have super knowledgeable and helpful employees. This store was no exception. The associate helping me went above and beyond in my opinion to show me that the water pouch (bladder) I was intending to return actually worked with my hiking bag. I mean we actually put water in it to see if it could fit! That's service! It was the sort of thing I wanted to do at home but wasn't sure if I would be able to return it. Which leads me to the other great thing about REI-- their return policy. Just hold on to your receipts because they stand behind everything they sell from one year of purchase! Fantastic! But if you're a member they can look up all your purchases in their computer in case you don't have your receipt. REI is a co-op so if you join their membership, you become a lifetime member for $20 and are eligible to receive an annual dividend check based on your annual purchases as well as early notices for special sales. Locations throughout (most) of the U.S. sadly none overseas. It's always a welcome sight whenever we need to grab (or replace) new gear for our outdoor explorations! I've been a member of REI for several years and have always had great experiences going, but I finally had my first bad experience. I went to return a watch and buy the upgraded version but the workers wouldn't take it without the styrofoam from the box. I had driven about 45 minutes to get there and offered to buy the nicer watch and return the older watch with the new styrofoam. The people working there laughed at that and were very rude to me for trying to save another round trip to that store. It's styrofoam.... It was the exact same between watches since one just had better software than the other. Now I'll probably just return the $700 watch and buy it on Amazon. There's no reason to treat customers like they're idiots when they're trying to be reasonable. read more

An awesome experience, as usual. The staff tend to have interesting backgrounds that help them make better recommendations. Eduar was no different, and his background in clothing design with Goretex gave me condense when he told me about backpack fabrics. He was knowledgeable about different sizes and brands of backpacks, helped with strap adjustments and adding weight, and writing up the final order. The fifth star I'd only missing because the company doesn't include enough backpack colors in their inventory, even online. I ended up with a color I don't love, but it was a worthwhile trade off for the 1 year return policy. read more

My husband and I usually love REI. However, we have now had 2 bad experiences with this location this weekend alone. We went Friday looking for a roof top luggage carrier. We needed the whole system--roof rack, etc. This was going to cost around $1000-$1200. We had to wait around for 30-45 minutes to get helped. The guy helping us was quite nice and knowledgeable, but there were lots of people needing help in the bike area, and he was assigned to all of this and in charge of looking up luggage racks, etc. (poor management). He finally was able to help us, and gave us good info. But, when we made a decision and were ready to move forward, he was busy again. So we left. Today, we went back to look for shoes and, again, to purchase the carrier system. We waited in line for shoes for more than 15-20 minutes, to no avail and received no help. There was, again, poor staffing and my husband was so frustrated we ended up leaving again with no purchases. They have poor staffing and need more help. So, if you need help, do NOT go here. We are now looking to spend our money elsewhere and REI lost a pretty big sale--TWICE. read more
