When we moved back to the DFW over 10 years ago we visited this store. It's a nice place in a slightly run down area. It's not in the main shopping areas so it's a bit out of the way, but they carry specialty items and name brands that the sporting goods stores don't carry. However, I wouldn't necessarily classify it as sporting goods, they don't sale the same stuff you get at Academy to Dick's Sports, they sale outdoor mountainy type of items... climbing, hiking, kayaking, bouldering, trail walking, camping ... that type of stuff, both materials and the clothes. It is really nice inside. It doesn't look anything inside like the older exterior shows. The staff and I believe the owner are super nice. I came in today because they carry Kuhl brand clothing, I was surprised that they had more styles then REI did, and they had longer lengths. Walked out with some, very happy. read more

This place is amazing. Got a new pair of trail runners and the service was over the top. They have an outstanding selection of shoes including both shoe brands and shoes styles that the major chains don't carry. Plus they 3D scan your feet to ensure you get a shoe with the proper fit. Ya'll - this is a hidden gem for any outdoor enthusiast!! Hubby was doing an online search for a Perception brand kayak and the store Mountain Sports popped up. We live in North Dallas and had never heard of Mountain Sports before! He called the store to ask a few questions and verify what colors were in stock. We decided to make a trip out to Arlington the very next day! When we entered the store we were greeted by a very nice young man named Zach. He actually remembered talking to my husband and knew exactly what we were looking for! We looked at the "grasshopper green" kayak on display but went back into the warehouse and settled on the "dapper blue" color. After sitting in it, he knew it was exactly what he was looking for! We enjoyed talking to one of the owners as well. Check out was a breeze and a couple of guys helped to carry it out and put it on the car. Hubby secured the kayak to the roof rack and we were ready for the drive home. This store makes you feel so comfortable and has the best customer service in addition to being well stocked with high-end name-brand adventure gear. We highly recommend Mountain Sports!!! read more

I'm horrible with names but I will say that everyone here is very friendly, helpful, highly professional, knowledgeable, and dedicated. I haven't heard of Mountain Sports until I did a deep dive on a discontinued roof rack system and to my surprise, Mountain Sports has them in stock and reasonably priced. No price gouging like other sellers. I didn't want the latest and greatest from Yakima with their Baseline system and found that Mountain Sports has Yakima's last generation Q Tower system in stock. I placed an order on their eBay store for local pickup. I'm glad I did the local pickup. This place is a hidden gem. Mountain Sports is not a big box retailer that tries to push you to upgrade or spend more. I spent a good 30 mins just browsing around making a mental list of what I need to pick up for my next visit. This place is a paradise for the outdoor folks. I wish I was good at remembering names. This person help me find a pad for my Q-tower kit. He gave me a piece of very helpful advice; "Find another clip kit that contains the pads you are looking for." It didn't dawn on me to look at different clip kits. These clips have been discontinued for years. I did a quick search and found them in a different kit! Jeanette totally knows her shoes and she measured my arch separately from my toes to discover my feet are different sizes. Mountain Sports is a great little store providing the goods for outdoorsy people and adrenaline junkies alike. I've always eye'd the store when driving on Pioneer, wishing for a good reason to buy snowboarding gear while lusting for a day on the mountain. When the time FINALLY came for me to head west for the mountains this year, I decided it was time to buy a helmet (you know, gettin' older and realizing how important my noodle is and all that). I first went to Sun and Ski Sports in Dallas, only because I work near there and it was convenient to go during my lunch hour. Their helmet section looked like a warzone... trashed boxes, helmets on display with missing pieces, steep prices that I wasn't prepared for... so I blew it off. I talked myself into going to Mountain Sports on my way home, WHAT A GOOD IDEA! The employees were friendly, and I bugged one of them about their helmets because I like opinions from experts and don't know a whole hell of a lot about mountain helmets. Dude was super nice and gave me the run down, then left me to browse, something we often take for granted. He wasn't trying to sell me anything, just provided answers and made sure I was OK before going about his business. Introverts unite! Anyway, their helmet section was like night and day compared to S&S. Clean, organized, properly displayed. I mean this isn't something we should be heaping praise on since it should be happening regardless, but I found it curious that the independent mountain store was in impeccable shape while the chain mountain store was a dump. Not only that, the prices at Mountain Sports were tremendously lower than at S&S, also surprising. Even further, Mountain Sports had a way better selection. I always knew this store was gonna be good! Long story short, Mountain Sports is a cool little shop for us enthusiasts to get great gear for fair prices and wander around the store all wishing we were browsing beneath the shadow of a mountain. This is a bit of a different review. I have never stepped foot in this store before but received a call from one of the employees. He notified me that there was a suspicious purchase made in my name and credit card information. It turns out he spotted the nearly $400 charge to my credit card before Chase was even aware. I cannot thank them enough for being so proactive to realize the suspicious purchase and then to notify me (especially when they didn't owe me a thing). This is my 1st review so don't really know how to do this. Going into there I wanted a stable, good tracking kayak so I had a lot of questions and got all of them answered. The staff was very helpful and friendly. They were quick to help me as soon as I walked into the door. I'm not always the easiest customer to deal with because I do ask a lot of questions and just like to talk I also change my mind sometimes but the guy that helped me was understanding and showed me their stock and the different choices and helped me to pick the right one. I walked out of there with the Bonafide SS107 (for anyone who cares). But I can't say enough good things about my experience. If possible I would give Mountain Sports zero stars. My recent interactions with Mountain Sports was the absolute WORST customer experience I have ever encountered or witnessed in my 60 years on this planet! I purchased a high end $3000.00 Kayak from Mountain sports this past February (2020). When the State of Texas Department of Wildlife offices reopened (closed for months due to Covid 19) I filled out my paperwork to get the kayak registered and waited 3 weeks for an appointment. My appointment date was this past Friday, June 19th. After presenting my paperwork to the TDPW I learned that the boat serial number on the Bill of Sale I received from Mountain Sports was registered to someone in central Texas. To make a long story as short as possible I learned that the Bill of Sale I received from Mountain sports was incorrect and further learned that they never provided me with an MSO (Manufacturers Statement of Origin). These are documents that the State requires to register a new boat. While standing in the TPWD registration office I called Mountain Sports and asked to speak with Josh the Manager then explained what I had just learned. I explained I was leaving TPWD offices and needed him to have the an accurate bill of sale and an MSO for me when arrived in 45 minuets. Josh explained the he could give me the phone number to Jackson Kayak's and recommended I should call them for the MSO document. I explained to Josh how these issues and inaccuracies were caused by Mountain Sports and it would be great if he took ownership of the problems and made any needed calls to Jackson Kayak's corporate offices himself while I was driving to pick up the documents.... Josh's reaction to my request was to become angry and hang up on me. I'm not kidding... He became exasperated with me because I asked him to clear up their mistakes. This gets even worse... When I arrived I had to wait for Josh to sign the Bill of Sale (State requirement)... After signing an accurate Bill of Sale he asked if I needed anything else. I explained that an apology would have been great then turned to leave the store. When I began opening the door to leave I hear someone from the register/counter area say "Wha, Wha, Wha"... I am not making this up. I turned around and looked at Josh and asked asked if he made that remark. Josh's reply was " I didn't say that" I turned to another employee standing next to Josh and asked if he had made the remark. His reply was "I didn't say that". I looked at third employee standing behind the counter and asked him if he made the remark... He admitted that he said it. I explained to him that his remark was childish, petty and extremely unprofessional. I walked outside stunned about what had just happened then went back into the shop and spoke with the owner Bill whom I realized had witnessed the entire situation but did not become involved. Bill apologized for his employees comment and explained that he had "gotten on to him". I urge you to remember this nasty experience if you are considering doing business with Mountain Sports. read more

Excellent store! A few years ago I was looking for a high quality axe for camping. I walked in and found out that they carry axes from Gransfors Bruk, which are made in Sweden and very high end. I purchased the Small Forest Axe and have loved it for making kindling, feather sticks and cross cutting small timber. I just went back a month ago and they had the Gransfors Bruk Swedish Carving Axe in stock! I was so excited that I threw down the cash on the spot. I've been carving wooden spoons, butter knives and serving platters with it. Every time I go in there they have cool knives, axes, backpacks and other gadgets. My kids love the store too. I'm 5' 11'' and normally wear a women's size 11-12 shoe. My feet are long and narrow. Just went to Mountain Sports and found the K2 Haven Snowboarding Womens Boots (see below link). I found that the boa system is great for narrow feet; the boot fits nice and snug. Also, I got these boots in a womens 10. At first, they felt too small but the padding will pack out after wearing them a few times or ask to have them heat molded. I had mine heat molding in the store, it only takes about 10-20 mins and definitely worth it. Everyone at the store was very welcoming. The guy helping me with the boots was attentive and helpful. "This was my first purchase at this store. I was searching for Metolius bolt hangers on the internet and found this company had some at a good price plus had them in stock (other companies did not have them in stock...and REI -- where I normally shop, no longer carry them and I know this brand is a great brand and did not want to try something cheaper). I ordered 15 from their website late at night. The first thing in the morning, I received an email that they only had 6 in stock but have some on order and will have more in 10 days and will ship my order at that time. The email said if that was a problem to let them know. I wrote back and said is there any way you can ship the 6 now and ship the others when they come in. My only suggestion would be that they would have replied to my email, instead they DID send out the 6 immediately and sent me a tracking number. I was pleased with their customer service (other than not replying but I did get the email for the tracking number saying my order had shipped but I did not know if 6 were coming or the whole 15). 10 days later, I received the email notifying me that my shipment was sent with a tracking number. I took a risk because I had read just a couple negative reviews in regards to customer service which is why I wanted to write this review to show my experience.
