Had a completely stuck rear wheel on my recumbent bike. The shop expert took my bike after a quick observation and 10 minutes later i walked out with a fixed bike. I had expected to leave the bike there, wait for 3-5 days, and then pick up the bike. Instead it took me longer to get the bike out and back into my car than it took the expert to fix my bike. And this is not the first time that i received the best service an advice from REI for the last 10+ years (when they were in Santa Monica). read more

When you come in, they push for you to be a member in an abusive manner. Handed me two fliers that I just put on their furniture. When you purchase, it's the same thing. I made a purchase in-store, and the sales associate asked me 3 TIMES if I want to be a member. I said no all three times. "Are you sure?" YES I'm sure! "I just want to make my purchase." Even when he handed me the receipt he asked if I'm sure. It's very aggressive, predatory, and in poor taste. They use outdated abusive sales tactics. Forced and contrived, like he was about to twist my arm. It's very uncomfortable. NO IS A COMPLETE SENTENCE. They do not understand what NO means. Terrible training on management. I've attached screen shots from Google reviews from other customers that have experienced this obnoxious pushy behavior from their employees. It seems to be an ongoing issue to harass their customers. Really didn't have anything I was looking for which was a large brimmed upf/uv protected hat and some stadium seating cushions. The cushions they had were really not any better than just sitting on the ground or a bench. They were just vinyl attached to straps with no cushion. And not much of a selection of hats. read more

Shoutout to Spencer in the shoe department, this guy was a superstar!! We went in on Memorial Day (peak chaos) and he was somehow helping a crowd of people while still making each person feel taken care of. He hauled out box after box, took the time to teach us the surgeon's knot for lacing, and mid-fitting helped free a little boy who got his hand stuck in a bench. He handled everything with a positive attitude and provided personalized recommendations for every person's needs. read more

Okay, so I'm a member, so I'm a bit biased, but this is a lovely store with lots of wonderful items for all types of active people. I recently had a knowledgeable employee help me find shoes to fit a specific need, without trying to sell me on a specific brand. The overall service was good, even with slightly long lines. I'm not pleased with the parking situation (why the gates?), but that's my only gripe. read more

Funny reading these reviews about the rude service. I just came here for hours, stayed for the amusing writeups and decided to give a little validation. I can confirm from my own personal experience that several staffers were impressively rude. And, that at least one was really nice and helpful; and that they had a lot of staff on the floor. And, that waiting in line to purchase an item took over a half hour; there were about 8 people in line when i started. i like the Manhattan Beach store. This one for sure not-so-much. Is it the worst anywhere? Dunno, my denominator is kinda scarce. But this is the worst I've visited of, oh, maybe 15 in my lifetime? Will it keep me from shopping at REI? No. Will this keep me from shopping at this location? Yes, unless it's too hard to travel the further distance; I'd give it another try with _very_ low expectations. Probably the nicest and best location you will find an REI. It's in one of the wealthiest sections of Los Angeles with a primarily single upscale demographic. It's right in the newly developed marina on the water, on a heavily traveled bike path that joins South Bay and Venice/Santa Monica, next to a Trader Joe's that is also on the water and across the street from an established upscale shopping center and down the block from the very popular Burton Chace Park. REI paid a fortune to lease this Class A commercial property but I believe that they will hit a "home run" with it. It's beautiful inside the store and surrounded by upscale restaurants with patios that overlook the marina and ocean. The warm weekends and summers are going to be crazy busy here--and while they are now offering free 2-hour parking in their lot shared with other businesses--they are going to find that entitled LA people are going to park there and walk to the park, marina, beach, and unload bikes for a bike ride taking up valuable customer spaces. They will probably have to have the Landlord implement some sort of validated parking control otherwise customers will not be able to patronize the store. Definitely check this REI store out--it's a major winner and since the 1980's REI has been one of my favorite "go to" stores I spend a lot of $$ at. read more

Then I asked one of the employee and couldn't even help me because he had to go do something else and I felt discriminated by the way he said it to me. I brought my service dog in the store and they told me to leave because my service dog didn't have a harness on her when in legal terms, the dog does not need to show proof of being a service, but I had her card and everything and they just asked me to leave with my service dog. What the store does is illegal and I will never be shopping at REI co-op again. I asked to speak to the manager. I was being berated for having a service dog, because they apparently used to accept dogs and now they don't they assumed I was lying. The only thing this place has for it is the beautiful view, but even that can't make me want to spend money. What the store does is downright illegal and is completely against every other what REI stands especially inclusivity. Not sure how much longer the store will say in business, but I will say it's not worth it. You can only try two shoes on. Can't try multiple shoes to see what would be better for hiking or running and my favorite part was I asked for high top hiking boots and they just kept telling me. Oh well we think the low tops will be better and after I tried on my two shoes they told me I couldn't try on any more shoes. Shoes . My advice to REI get your act together, teach your employees actually how to do their jobs, learn the laws. To say the Santa Monica location was better is an understatement and this place has no selection no help and no Care. They won't check stock over the phone like they used to and if you check online and place an order they wont have it in stock. Im done shopping with this company, they have wasted a significant amount of my time when trying to purchase items. I purchased a tent online from them, waited over 45 minutes for them to try and find it and then they claimed they did not have it, not alternative offered or any sympathy. I tried to purchase shoes in person and, the salesperson did not bring out the size I asked for, when it really didnt fit I asked for 2 sizes, they mentioned one of them was out of stock but then brought it and not the other size which is the one that would have fit. I didn't want to wait any more (at this point was there 20+ minutes as they were helping other customers) so I just left. They stopped carrying as many shoes now, theres only 1 -2 shoes without a significant amount of drop so forget finding something that works well for many people. read more

One of the prettiest REIs in existence - only second to the location in Downtown Seattle, imo. This REI sits on the water in Marina Del Rey with coastal views throughout the storefront. The interior is stocked with all your favorite outdoorsy items, including ski gear, camping goods, and a large variety of absurdly priced clothing. Compared to other REI locations this spot is definitely on the smaller side. You'll find all the necessities, but I wouldn't be surprised if a good number of items would need to be ordered. A big perk is their large open parking lot, which is a rarity in LA. You'll easily snag a spot, making this a quick and efficient trip to REI. read more

Walkie no Talkie I went in to buy a new set of walkie talkies. No one told me I was actually buying the display, which turned out to be just one walkie. One. Like a sad, abandoned twin whose sibling got adopted by a nicer family. Seal broken. Life already lived. I called and asked if they could just... walk over to the display and see if the other one was still there. "Against policy." Right. Selling incomplete, used merchandise without telling me? Totally fine. But walking thirty feet and using your brain? Against the moral code of the store. So I come back. They hand me a "brand new" set. Which is also opened. Both walkies there, sure. But both used. Like they'd been through some kind of unnamed trauma together -- probably sat in a stockroom, quietly judging every employee who walked by. Just kidding! That's against company policy! So now I have them, technically. But they're... not mine. They've been touched. They've seen things. And when I talk into one, I swear I can hear it whisper back: you should have just stayed home. read more

BE AWARE. Their parking says 2hrs free with validation. I walked in to look around they were out of the item I was interested in. So I asked a sale associate how do I validate my parking ticket. Didn't get his name, he took my ticket and exchanged it for a validation ticket. It didn't work. I spoke to security, which said I needed my original ticket plus the validation ticket, news to me. I went back to REI, said they could not do anything about. Nobody had my ticket I gave them!! REI said the parking was owned by a different company. Then went to security and they said that you have to pay $38. REI you've lost a customer big time and I hope other customers are aware what you didn't tell me I needed Both, that you need to keep your original parking ticket and the validation ticket absolute rip off. read more

The good: This is a great outdoor store with trendy and high-end outdoors stuff from brands like Jet Boil, Patagonia, Keen, etc. This location is beautiful. The marina is right behind here so it's a nice area to take a walk around. The interior is very organized and easy to navigate. They had a great selection of sunglasses for an affordable price ($$25-30). They had a really cute mini tent for pets or stuffed animals. They also randomly sold sour candies and snacks in the check-out aisle. In the camping cooking area they sold hot sauces. They had a small sale rack for shoes. The employees were friendly and offered help. The bad: This was a smaller REI than others I've been to. Things are overall pricey. The parking lot is small. The interesting: REI started in Seattle. I've been this location multiple times and every time was a bad experience. They are ALWAYS understaffed here. It's so hard to get some help. The checkout line is always long because there are hardly any employees at the registers. I've always had to wait literally 15-30 minutes JUST to checkout( not exaggerating). The manager here has no idea how to run a store. Low inventory, minimal selection of items compared to other locations. On a busy day, it's almost impossible to find parking. Save your time and go to the Manhattan beach location on Rosecrans, way better staff, inventory, and parking there. I wouldn't be sad if this marina del Rey location closed. Pretty awful. read more

This Marina Del Rey branch sucks! Half of the items are out of stock and entire shelves are empty. Every time I say anything to the staff, they say yes we know it's a problem. If you can't keep stocks of hiking socks you have no business calling yourself REI. I have been shopping at REI for over 40 years and this is the most pitiable branch I've ever encountered. So sad to have lost the Santa Monica branch. I used to be a big supporter of REI but no longer. Not a fan of REI. This visit has proved it. Every REI store (I've been to 3 now), I have been to I have had an issue. Aside from the things being overpriced, and not much customer service, they don't do a good job training their workers. I didn't get any help while shopping in there (was looking for a hat for a friend and I couldn't find anyone to help). I decided to buy some cliff bars because they were marketed at $1.50. When they rang up they were $2 each. Rather than checking the signs where the bars are located to prove they are $1.50, the cashier asked if I just wanted to void everything. Really weird that a store right on the water does not have kayaks, SUPs, life jackets, paddles, etc. When I asked a manger why, she said their marketing department did not think it was important. Then she said, we have bathing suits. Yikes! There is not a water sports store anywhere near by. This store is literally across the the street from the public dock. They have bike roof rack systems but none for kayaks. They had one inflatable SUP but is set there more like a decoration. REI stores not near the water have these items. One of the newest REI stores in LA, swung by today to shop, and the store is very nice, and has all the things you need for the outdoor life. The staff is very friendly, and theres plenty of parking out front for free. Grabbed a pair of vuori shorts and some socks. Cool grand opening for the community. All the employees were super friendly and helpful especially the male associates working shoes and womens clothing. As always REI keeps on its promise to inform and involve people in being active and preserving the great outdoors and nature! Pros: -bike shop onsite which makes since because this is SoCal -extensive camping gear and backpacks -great selection of shoes better than other REIs and nearby sports shoes -support local vendors. The couple selling the MRE food were so sweet and their products (lasagna and beef stroganoff) were delicious. Glad REI is selling. -awesome Marina views and right next to TJs Cons: -womens clothing (and mens) was not very extensive including the REI brand items. Ive been to other REIs with many mannequins wearing different legging and bra options. There were not many mannequins heres to model outfits. Some items and brands I saved to checkout that I saw online were not available in store. Bummer -i may have missed it but dont think I saw fitting rooms or shopping carts/bags? i noticed a lady holding a stack of clothes and she had to lug it around the store -childrens clothing and childrens shoes was pretty nonexistent -another yelper said limited water sports -limited recreational sports like basketball, soccer, pickle ball products (Dicks is better for these sports anyways) read more

Took my ebike here 11/26 to get new brakes installed. My friend who has the exact bike took his to REI Santa Monica for the exact reason (he had a wonderful experience). This location is new so I guess we can chalk it up to training but the bike department is comically awful. After weeks of it sitting there, they instruct me to Amazon a new caliper system because they don't have the power to order it themselves. I told them to just replace the pads and I'll go to a more competent bike shop. They did so and the brakes zero work. They sent me off with literally zero brakes. They did feel bad so they didn't charge me for labor and only charged me the $20 for pads and $30 membership. But I have to say that was the worst $50 I've ever spent in my entire life. it's a beautiful store but if you're going there for brakes for your bike, you're making a huge mistake. Don't do it. It's a big, clean location, all one level, with a pretty good selection. I would say that the Manhattan Beach location has more staffing. The parking here is two hours free with validation otherwise you have to pay. I bought a few items there and have to say it's very nice and I would highly recommend anyone wanting high-quality backpacks, bicycles, clothing, or anything related to the outdoors to come here. It's also nice that there is lot of restaurants nearby and a Trader Joe's. read more

I did notice that they are understaffed, especially for a Sunday afternoon, but they still get 5 stars because they have so much cool stuff and because the staff that I was able to talk to was helpful. Extra shoutout to Silvia in shoes. A lot of back and forth trying to find a fit because Altra, Hoka, and ON for some reason make changes to the same model from generation to generation (Altra Escalante 4 was great but the 5 is not, etc.) and ON in particular has very inconsistent sizing. I am a straight 8 but tried on shoes from 7 to 8.5 today. I finally left happy with my Hoka Arahi in a 7.5. Road shoe tip for people who like lightweight cushion and want an alternative to Saucony Kinvara and Altra Escalante -- the Hoka Arahi seems to be just right, even though it's officially a stable shoe and not neutral. I will also give a shoutout to Aaron. He was very nice and helpful while ringing me up. He asked for my phone number so I could get my rewards, and he asked if I need parking validation. Wow what a bummer this location is. Small selection, slow service, no repair counter. Limited shoe selection (might as well order online from anyone if you can't try things on!) worst of all. Also limited women's pants - the hardest thing to get right online. And the mirrors in the dressing room have harsh line of lights along the sides making it really hard to see. Worst of all the parking stinks. Entrance only on Admiralty, exit on Mindenao where you're only allowed to turn right - and they only validate for two hours - not enough time to the clothes and boots I need for my next trip - oh and the traffic around there is worse that DT Santa Monica was. Rei is supposed to be a coop - but they seem to be acting like slimy cheap for profit. read more
