A.P.C., Acne Studios, and Paul Smith have finally closed, and the clock is likely ticking on Aēsop, Mykita, and Gentle Monster. Into this bleak retail landscape, Adidas has actually opened a new store -- a flagship boutique for its Adidas Originals line at the corner of Broadway and Eighth. Adidas Originals is the retro-inspired streetwear line bearing the trefoil logo known from the 1970s; this is not the athletics line of performance sportswear. Well-known styles offered here include the Gazelle, Superstar, Samba, and Stan Smith. Clothing and accessories are also carried here, much of it trimmed in those unmistakable three stripes. One's reaction will likely depend on one's sportswear allegiances; I've been firmly on Team Adidas for decades, not much of a fan of their big competitor Nike (or their cross-town Dassler family rival, Puma). The store is stylish but not tacky. The sales associates are helpful but not too pushy. And there was a sale on certain styles, so I actually bought a new pair of shoes.
