NOT SO HAPPY HAPPY HOUR…read more We popped into the Wolf and Hound Irish Pub, which boasts on its website that it's "a good place to hide from the yogis" (not the smartest way to endear itself to this particular neighbourhood!) for some mid-afternoon scran. Between the two of us we ordered deep-fried pickles, poutine, "slow-roasted Angus beef yorkies with crisp onions and au jus", a side of fries and one soft drink. For $8, we got 4 slices of dill pickle (likely one pickle in total) breaded and deep-fried with ranch dip. This was the most successful item because it seemed to be freshly made and hot. At $2 a piece it was wildly overpriced. The mini poutine ($7) was disappointing. The chips were okay, but the cheese was clearly not the required "squeakers", more likely plain old mozzarella, and the gravy was oddly flavoured and unsatisfying. Half of it was left in the bowl uneaten. The so-called yorkies ($9) with so-called slow-roasted Angus beef were a joke. Straight out of the freezer via the microwave without a doubt. The two tiny yorkies were flat and tough. If they'd ever had the famous yorkie puff and lightness it was long gone. The beef was tough and lifeless. And the "au jus" - extremely salty and my guess is it was, not long ago, a powder in a packet to which hot water was added before arriving at our table in a tiny pitcher. I would honestly be embarrassed to serve that dish to anyone. The side chips ($4) were adequate. They arrived hot, at least. One soft drink ($3.25) was served in a glass with a few small ice cubes. It was not cold. At least we didn't get a can plopped down in front of us like at many places. Service: he took our order and he delivered it to our table. No inquiry how everything was, no "Would you like anything else?" No "How was everything?" when we paid. (We gave up waiting for a bill at the table and went to the bar to pay.) He seemed to be the only server in the place and there were several people at the bar, so perhaps they kept him busy. Servings were small and are perhaps mini versions of what is served at full price during non-Happy Hour. I hope so. Our total bill for a decidedly unsatisfactory repast was $33.04 with tax. It is a pub/tavern, so expect that when you come here. It can get busy around happy hour or later hours, but the service both times we went was still wonderful! Everyone was nice, informative and helpful! The crispy fried chili tofu was also very tasty. Sat one time up in the bar area, and the second time in one of the booths down the stairs. Down the stairs area is low key the legit cozy spot! The vibe down there was great. Up by the bar can definitely be a lot of fun with the right group. The place was clean, the service was fast. She doesn't have that many teeth so steak from ubereats wouldn't work. None of the prime-rib places would deliver, or they were sold out OR they didn't deliver to her area or even worse...wouldn't allow a friend to pick up on my behalf if it were my card. It was really starting to look like Chinese takeout for Christmas dinner but the sad part is this is the first year we have been without each other and she has no other family and she would be considered high risk, so no friends/guests. This meal is going to give her some normalcy as we always enjoyed awesome meals together. As soon as we can, I will be hosting a party to celebrate getting over all of this and I will most definitely pick you! I don't think you know how much impact your gesture has had. I finally stood up and asked the other server if we could please place our order, who then brought us to the attention of our own server. She came over and oh have you had time to decide? No apology for the twenty minutes we had sat. Another couple came in after us, ordered and had the food delivered, by the other server, before we even placed ours. Ordered, asked for our water to be refilled. Never happened. I finally asked another gentleman if we could have more water, and he got it right away. When our food was dropped, there was no mention of our water miraculously appearing. The food was boring, bland, and not overly generous in the portions. My fish pieces were large, but mainly batter, the fries were hot but as soon as they cooled a little they were very greasy. The coleslaw tasted like nothing at all. The lovely K has the Cajun chicken Cobb salad. The presentation was nice, but it was equally underwhelming. The left 3/4's of my plate. We arrived before 7, put our name in and saw we were not far down the list. We were told the wait would be at least 1/2 hour. Then we saw a group of 11 was waiting before us. They do not have tables for more than 4, so tables need to be put together and cleared that become available next to each other. After an hour we thought surely it would be our turn. We saw 2 tables that were empty next to each other that could be perfect for our group of 6. We then watched as no one cleaned it for over 20 minutes. We asked the 'bouncer' about it, and he said 'I can't tell them how to do their job'. (I guess he's not allowed to help clean tables either?!) There needs to be someone just cleaning tables and bringing water etc to make this place run smoothly. Finally we sat down after waiting over 1.5 hours. Our waitress seemed surprised we wanted to order food right away! Then another hour until the food came as there was a private party and the party of 11 ahead of us jamming up the kitchen. Eating so late is not our usual routine so I was not the happiest but as least we had lots of time to catch up with our friends!
