After leaving today, I read other reviews. I should have read them beforehand. The "safety" absolutely is hyper on a range control kick.... worse than any military installation. You really should not come to this place if you have shot pistols before. I'm sure they are less likely to kick you out if they are teaching a class or buying something. The safety was literally all over my back the entire time just waiting to find something. Just an observation, he seemed far less observant around non brownies. I did not take the firearm instruction class, but I went with a few seasoned shooters who instructed me in shooting range protocol with their own firearms before entering the facility. The class is offered the first Saturday of the month at the Oakhill south location, with classes limited to six. Too many hands in the kitchen. Wait... Red's also has Ladies Night. No no, we don't get in for free with some eyelash batting or sashaying, but we do get a half-off discount for hourly rates: $7.00/hr instead of $14.00/hr. Cute rate. And cute moose headmount. Went there several times. One guy was helpful. Everyone else I interacted with was a jerk in one way or another. Employees don't bother to wear masks and won't do so when asked politely. They act like they care about safety, but clearly couldn't care less is customers live or die. Jerks. I have no such problems at all at other local ranges. Let me tell you about my experience with Reds Indoor Range... If you go there to shoot, you might want to consider that you will be shooting your firearm in an enclosed range. It will be very loud and you will feel the concussion from the firearms that people are shooting adjacent to you. After your visit to this un-ventilated indoor range, you might experience an irritation in your throat and respiratory tract from breathing in toxic gun smoke. The ventilation and air quality is miserable, I advise bringing and wearing a gas mask if their range Nazi will allow it. But wait there's more!... About ten years ago I went to Reds to buy a Benelli shotgun, specifically I wanted one with the comfort tech stock, the salesman said the gun they had did in fact have that stock, that it was a just a different style. That was a lie, it wasn't until after I bruised the hell out of my shoulder at the gun range when I realized that I got duped and the stock on the gun was the standard turkey stock with the pistol grip. It is not the comfort tech offered by Benelli. It cost me the cost of the shotgun itself ($450.00) to order the correct stock from Benelli's website! I tried calling Reds sales people and they basically said all sales are final and that I could go get bent! Don't trust Reds sales people, they are rude, hostile, and they will lie to you. MY LAST DAY AT RED'S; Me and my friends used to go to Reds on the weekends, we were all out in the parking lot securing our firearms in our vehicles when a sales associate approached us and asked us to leave and never return. When we asked why? He said that we were not allowed to display our firearms out in the open and he gestured at my friends M1 Garand which he just bought that day from Reds! My friend even showed him the receipt and still this paranoid freak threatened to call the cops on us if we didn't leave the premises immediately. So basically myself and four other of my friends got permanently banned from Reds Indoor Range for making a purchase. Combined we spent thousands of dollars a year at Reds Indoor Range, well all of that came to a screeching halt that day. None of us have since returned and its been ten years. So why am I writing this review now? Better late than never. read more

Worst customer service and most insulting experience I've ever had. First time handgun customer and I was treated rudely, made to feel stupid, and totally unwelcome there. Finally asked to speak to the manager and was told they would rather call the police than bring the manager in to hear a complaint. The manager wasn't any better when I insisted in sharing some feedback with him as a first time older woman customer. If I could leave zero stars, I would. Do not bring your kids here for learning. Went here with my daughter for her first shooting experience on her birthday (she turned 13) she had a misfire with the gun pointed down range like it should be. She didn't overreact and simply set the gun down. An attendant observed and kicked her out after only 4 shots. You're not allowed to interact with the person shooting and they hover over every move you make. They still charged us both for the hour, despite selling the lane we were in. There are some great outdoor ranges that are way more suited to actually teach and show your kids how to shoot. Seriously the best part of getting the boot from here was I sought out another range. Check out Eagle Peak in Leander, they charge only $15 to become a member (one-time fee) and $15 to shoot ALL DAY. read more

Just got back from Red's and it was an excellent experience. Albeit the price of ammo has gotten a bit outrageous since gun owners and aficionados have started the whole "hording" of ammunition, my time at Red's this lazy Sunday was still superb. Two friends and I shot a revolver and a basic semi-auto handgun. After shooting I keep getting closer to wanting to buy my own handgun. The employee outfitting my small party was very nice and very helpful. There was never a sense that he was inconvenienced or troubled that he was showing noobs how to shoot a gun we never shot before. If I ever do decide to buy a rifle, handgun, or another shotgun, I'm definitely going to Red's. It is what a firearm store is suppose to be like and it has an added bonus of having a range! I was firing one shot every 2 seconds, about ten yards, emptied a mag of 15 rounds, all in the black. And this fat range master just comes charging at me screaming WHAT AREYOU DOING?! He "explained," in a condescending manner that their range had a rule of 1shot per 4 seconds. There was a guy shooting there's little slower than me but still faster than 4 seconds before I even started and while I was shooting and he didn't tell him anything. Anyway learn to conduct yourself in a professional way, or at least a calm manner you fat piece of $hit. Besides what kind of a lame rule is it where you shoot once every 4 seconds? That's just so inefficient if you are trying to improve your marksmanship. Also would be nice to warn people before they pay you the range fee that you have a loose dog of a range master and a stupid rule. Luckily there are a few other ranges in the Austin area. read more

Having never been to an indoor shooting range, I wasn't sure what to expect. It did help that I had visited once or twice in the past just to browse the merchandise and browse gun prices in the past. Upon entering, I was greeted by a gentleman at the counter. While browsing the pistols, another gentleman approached me and greeted me saying if I had any questions or wanted to see a gun to let him know. They definitely made me feel more comfortable and welcomed. I really expected stand-offish jerks instead of the nice and helpful individuals that worked there. I made my way to the back where the shooting range was and another gentleman gladly assisted me. When I told him I was interested in shooting, he quickly asked if it was my first time and without judgement, promptly explained their policies, prices, and what to expect. He quickly demonstrated proper carrying, holding, and shooting techniques. I decided on a Sig Sauer 9mm Semi-auto handgun and after being given a box of shells and eye/ear protection I was on my way! The range itself is pretty small and tight, but it's functional. I literally had a blast! About 25min later, after my box of 50 rounds were done, I exited, taking my paper hanging-target with me. With only, 3 or 4 bulls-eyes I know I need more practice, but in my opinion, not bad for the first time! Dropping $45 seems a bit much, so my next course of action is to buy a handgun and ammunition to save on those rental fee's, leaving only $15/hr as my damage in the future. This rating is for the range only, as I didn't shop the store which looked like it had a pretty large selection of items. I've been to ranges all over California and a few in TX. They're basically the same, other than some are indoor and some are outdoor. Whatever. They all serve the same purpose. Here were my issues with this range: -It was hot as hell in the range. My damn glasses kept fogging up. I generally prefer outdoor ranges, but in Texas I have learned to go indoors cause it's just too hot in the summer. Why the hell am I indoors breathing all the lead if it's just as hot inside? -The target posts are a hot mess. Ridiculous malleable metal arms, no crossbar for stability, clothes pins, and sewing pins. Yes, sewing pins to pin the targets because the clips don't work effectively. A HUMBLE SUGGESTION: Go to Office Depot and BUY BETTER CLIPS. I don't need to be dicking around with pins. Hell, tape would be better. The clips and arms were so bad my target sagged in the middle and was canted. I get that people shoot up the posts and you can't use metal posts with good clips but how do the other ranges do it without pins and sagging targets? Seriously, PINS? -The rest for your weapons and equipment is a little higher than I've seen in the past. I'm 5'5" and a shorter shooter would likely have obstruction issues. -The RSO was a little overzealous. Don't get me wrong, you want an RSO who's paying attention, but the second I pulled out my weapons and locked back the slide on an empty pistol, charged it and set it down, he was on my ass about keeping the slide locked back on pistols that aren't in use. I've NEVER had a RSO say that before, and again, I've been to MANY ranges. What the hell kind of rule is that? If I want to shoot multiple weapons I have to unload and lock back each time I switch? That's just bull$h*t. I was working with two pistols, so I had to pull the mag, eject the round and lock back each time I switched. Complete waste of my time. -The RSO had zero tact. Dude in the lane next to me had an issue with his credit card. How do I know? The RSO came up to him and loud a hell yelled that there was an issue with the guy's payment and for him to go back to the cashier. That's just rude and was clearly embarrassing for the dude who obviously resolved his issue cause he came back and shot. All the RSO had to do was politely ask him to go see the cashier. He didn't have to announce to the whole range that the dude's payment bounced. -The sink was broken. There's a sink across from the check in desk presumably for washing post shooting. There were two half full cups of soda or some dark liquid, and no soap. I stood there looking for soap for a good minute before someone finally asked what I was looking for. SOAP! Oh, the sink is broken use the bathroom. A humble suggestion: PUT UP A DAMN SIGN SAYING THE SINK IS BROKEN, OR FIX THE SINK. Positive items: Plenty of parking and special lead removing soap in bathrooms. The store looked pretty big but I didn't have time to look around as they were closing. Overall, this range was just janky. Yes, it ultimately served its intended purpose in that I shot my weapons, but this is the shabbiest range I've ever been to. I only tried it because Shady Oaks closes earlier. I won't be back to Red's. I'll just find a way to shoot earlier at Shady Oaks. If you have the option, I suggest you do the same. read more

So, let me tell you. I had never shot a gun before coming to Red's, and a good friend of mine who is a gun fanatic decided to take me gun shooting with his 22 rifle, AR-15 and 9 mm handgun. As for guns, it's pretty safe to say I have fallen in love and will now be saving money to buy my own handgun. My friend comes to Red's all the time so I trusted him. Luckily, we came during a Monday so it was Ladie's day ($8/hr for each lady, free rentals, buy their ammo). We were there for a good hour and spent close to $25 (he brought his own guns and ammo however). My only complaint is that it is so hot inside the range that the moment you set foot through the double doors you will have sweat dripping down your face. I understand there are multiple bodies, hot firearms going off, etc. but you think there would be a way to make it not so miserably hot in there that even your glasses are fogging up! read more

Clean, laid back, comfortable, and relatively convenient. The prices aren't too bad for range time. The ammo can get pricey, but that's to be expected. If I had one overriding complaint it's the wait in line to get more ammo or check out. Since they're charging you for range time, you're paying for the privilege of getting more ammunition or while waiting to leave. It's probably not a huge amount of money's difference, but it's annoying enough. read more

I wanted to let people know my experience so they can make their own judgement on Red's Shooting Range. My husband and I went there to get our first shotgun. Walked in and was greeted. Told the staff what we were looking for and was told they had that gun for us to purchase. We were asked if we were from Texas since we "obviously are not from here" since we did not own a shotgun. When he found out my husband was from California that is when the rude, hatred filled comments started. After filling out the application and paying for the gun, the following statements were made to us throughout a 2 day visit: "Californians should all go to Alabama instead of texas." "All Californians should be put in a camp to be held, in El Paso, then they will all end up going missing." "We all make mistakes" (replying to me saying I was fond of my husband). The 2nd and last day we went in to get the gun and the price of ammo came up. He stated, "A dollar per shell, that's not good"... then proceeds to sell me $3 per shell ammo. I'm a born and raised Texan women, my husband is a veteran. This is how we were treated. Decide for yourself if you want to spend your money here, we will not spend money here ever again. read more

Fantastic place to shoot with reasonably priced guns/bullets. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip. Before going to the place I was a little worried after reading a few unfavorable reviews. They made me think that if you don't know a lot about guns, which we did not, then you'd be made to feel stupid by the staff at this place. After reading many of these reviews, I was a bit worried about going to Reds the first time but I decided to go inside to check it out. The Guys were friendly and helpful and you may bring your own ammo to the range. I had an overall good experience at Reds. I do advise using both silicone ear plugs and headphones at the same time to protect ears. Otherwise, many of these negative reviews seem a little over the top. JS read more

Well it's a shame. They have lots in inventory and nice range, but their arrogance and poor customer service have made me go to another vendor. The funny part, I actually thought maybe, they were to busy the first time I entered. Well I was wrong after how I was treated today. It's a pattern. There were 5 representatives working and not one of them gave me a look or even said hello. I'm 6'1. Not hard to miss and they actually looked past me and took two other people after I had been there awhile standing right in front of them. After making it clearly evident by starring at them did I get some. service. Oh btw. Not one of these knuckleheads had a mask on. I did look at a couple guns. Again, nice inventory, but so did the next place I went to. I would like to say, the new vendor that I purchased my new firearm are now my "go to" from now on. Excellent customer service, great inventory, and prices were slightly better. I would have paid more though, due to the pleasant experience. But you know, I actually am I nice person and give people second chances. So I made another trip to the facility. They had a nice supply of ammunition so I thought to go pick up a couple of boxes. Upon entering I was greeted this time. Good start. I proceeded to ask to purchase some ammunition, to where I was asked if I was shooting, to which I declined. I then proceeded to ask may I purchase some, to where I was rudely denied. I over course had to ask, why will you not sell me something that you clearly tell your patrons, that you sell and have large quantities of (website), to a walk in paying customer.His answer to me was (what a clown) was "supply and demand!" So I chucked, left the facility and drove home, went online and bought 5 boxes of ammo and getting it shipped to my door. Speaks for itself doesn't it. With this type of arrogance and behavior, please ask yourself, is this is how you a paying customer chooses to be treated. This is from a visit in March that I mistakenly posted to the 290 location. I've been shooting at Red's (and Cook's before it was Red's) since somewhere in the early to mid 90's. Gone are the days when Red would be sitting behind the counter and chew the fat with you. The range rules made sense and the range officers knew what was important and would instruct you if you made a reasonable mistake. If they saw a new shooter they would help and give advice. At one point I was the new shooter getting tips at Red's. I remember once taking a group of friends from England to Red's. They had never held a gun and had been taught guns were evil in some way. We had three bays so a couple range officers spent extra time helping out in the other two bays so that by the time it was done they had shot everything from a 9mm to 357. They walked away that day understanding what it meant to shoot as a sport and why we yanks like it so much. That all changed today when I took my son shooting, he's been shooting a few times over the last two years but he's still learning. For safety I've always stepped into the bay, loaded the gun, chambered the round, placed the gun on safety, laid it down in the bay and let him step up to shoot. I make sure he follows all the safety rules so I don't really need a nanny stepping in every second to point out some minor thing. Today they had a new (at least new since the last time we went) rule that the person shooting had to load their own gun. Also, a gun had to be empty and placed with the bolt open to let another person shoot it. Not handing a gun to another person makes some sense but not being able to place a gun on safety set it down and another person walk up to shoot is just stupid. Makes no sense. I've been to a lot of ranges and have never been told that a gun can't be placed on safety and set down to pass it to another person. In the end we spent more time working with my son to try to be able to pull the slide (because you also can't help them pull the slide for some even more stupid reason) than we did shooting. In fact, at one point the range officer told me I couldn't help him clear a stove pipe... I just told him he needed help and cleared it anyway. Not wanting to ruin it for my son I pushed on through but I didn't enjoy myself at all. I hate to say it but i think that today may have been my last range day at Red's. I hope Red reads this and does something to fix it. read more

I can into reds looking for a Glock extended magazine I found what o needed after a few minutes as 4 employees stared at me and didn't ask me if I needed help but who needs help right not like it's their job so I put my item on the counter and after 2 minutes of me getting impatient I go to Them and say I'm ready to check out he tells me for my total and ask for my id for my mag I give it to him and he says no because I'm not 21 so very politely ask why is that because I have purchased plenty of Glock mags from bass pro ,cabelas,academy and gt disturbers with no issues he told me extremely rude "you have to be 21" I asked if that was a law or is a store policy just because I've never been declined a magazine and he said again you have to be 21 he then grabbed the mag off the counter and walked away leaving me at the register with my money and id on the counter to just stand there wondering what do I even do did that mean leave ....worst place to shop if being 21 to buy a magazine was a law he could've informed me with knowledge instead of being completely rude as I would've gladly listened and learned something new read more

Super nice employees, the only suggestion I have, if someone tells you, that they are new to guns (never seen a real gun or shot one) maybe have them load the gun with the blanks before sending them off to the range. The short intro to a gun was extremely overwhelming. Just a thought. I was super nervous, and could barley see because of the sweat (super super nervous) the area was super clean and the range lady (the one with the yellow vest) was very helpful. They just seem to have disingenuous business practices. The range temperature seems to be set intentionally at uncomfortable levels. HOT in the summer, and freezing in the winter. This encourages people to leave sooner since they charge the full hour regardless of how long you shoot for. Visited the range Nov 28th and the AC was on full blast. Also, they charge by person, not by bay. Have 4 people? They'll stick you in one bay charging you $60/hr. I can attest to all the negative comments about the staff. Poor attitude with no apparent concern for safety. This was my conversation checking in, almost verbatim. Staff: Have you shot here before? Me: I have, but my 3 friends have not. Staff are friendly and helpful. Ammo is overpriced! Range fees were $20 for 15 min of shooting. I paid $50 for 15-20 minutes in the store.

I won't go anymore. First of all, the guy signing us in needs to take a damn chill pill. I completed the form for my son and was going to fill one out for myself, when he asked me why I was filling one out for my son. I told him I thought I needed too because he is a minor. He kept saying, "Dang why would you do that?" He sounded just like Chris Farley. In addition, the Range Officer seemed to be stalking everyone waiting to just yell or demean someone. Red's has really turned the corner. I've recently started shooting at Red's again over my lunch break (my normal range is too far away). I am happy to report that they've done a complete 180 in regards to customer service/friendliness. I shoot several thousand rounds a year - and I am happy that I can now get practice in at lunch during the workweek. Can't go all the way to 5 stars because the ventilation and climate control could use an upgrade; however, it can't be easy cooling/filtering a 100 yd indoor range. read more

Wow. Terrible experience to say the least. I have been shooting all of my life and I brought my girlfriend to shoot for her first time. As I was showing her how to load/unload etc. The range Visa came over and strait up grabbed my gun and pointed it down range. The gun was unloaded with no clip. Mind you the gun was not even close to pointed at anyone. He was a total dickweed and ended up kicking us out when I was showing her the same operation with a different gun. Unloaded clip out and chamber open he said your done.... I will never go to this location again. I left extremely pissed off and fuck that place. read more

Most of the staff that I've dealt with are helpful, friendly and very knowledgeable but there's always one or two where the position has gotten to their head that has to mess it up for everyone. The overweight Hispanic dude with long hair (and facial hair, I think?) is that guy. Me and a friend went on a Sunday morning to shoot his vp9sk and rent a Glock 19 to test it out. Since my friend had his own weapon, he also brought his own ammo. When we rented the Glock, the guy at the desk told us we had to buy a box of their ammo to shoot in the rental, but he never said we had to keep buying their ammo. So we were in there shooting both guns and once we finished their box, we started using my friends ammo for both(good quality ammo too). About 30 minutes in the overweight ROS comes up to us and tells us we can't shoot their rental with our ammo (mind you he was the 2nd ROS in there, the first one didn't tell us anything about it). So we tell him we're sorry and return the rental, and keep shooting my friend's gun. 5 minutes later the guy comes up to us and tells us we need to leave, the range manager said so. I thought you only got kicked out of that place for safety reasons, not something like a miscommunication about ammo rental rules. We packed up but before we left, we went to apologize to the range manager for the miscommunication, he had no idea what we were talking about and said it was all on the ROS that kicked us out. That dude just needs the realize that the customers spending their money at Red's are the reason he has a job, he's not doing himself any favors by power tripping and kicking people out for non safety issues. Would've had more stars if weren't for that guy. read more
