My son (18) and I both took Mr. Davis's LTC class. I am by no means a gun guy. Neither was my son…read more So it was with a little apprehensiveness that I signed us up for this class. First, let me talk about the classroom venue. It is a well lit, clean conference room. It was like any training room you may have been in for any sort of professional training. It had a break room, bath room, etc. Comfortable chairs and everything you would expect a normal classroom setting to provide and was located in a state office building. The class is incredibly informative. Mr. Davis presents the information in a very easy going manner and encourages any questions so that you do not leave with any misunderstanding about the gun laws in Texas. For example, why can't you carry at the post office? He will tell you. What signs do you need to look for outside a business? He will show you. The laws have changed recently and his content reflects the latest changes to carrying a concealed handgun in this state along with any reciprocity concerns you might have if you travel outside Texas with a handgun. The class runs about 4 hours and if there were a lot of questions I could see it could run a little long but we were not in a large class so only a few questions. The range portion of the class takes place at the Austin Rifle Club. It's a 20 minute drive from the classroom location. My son and I caught lunch on the way and had plenty of time to get there. We were blessed with beautiful weather for an outdoor range. Mr. Davis will, if you don't already own a handgun, provide one for you to rent. We took that route. I don't own any handguns at this time so this was very convenient. It includes the ammunition, and he then takes the guns and cleans them afterwards. As I mentioned earlier, I am not a gun guy. My son had an interest and I was looking for a class and instructor that would provide us with the understanding of the law and some instruction on firing a handgun. I had fired one decades ago in the military but that was it. My son never. I just want to say how appreciative I am that I found Mr. Davis. First, you can tell he is "that gun guy" you can talk to. There's no condescension, just a love of guns that translates into his classes. I'm pretty sure he doesn't care what political persuasion you are, it never comes up. All he wants to do is produce informed and responsible gun owners. One moment that stuck out to me, but to no one else was as he was instructing my son on how to fire the 9mm, he saw a smile come over my son's face and could tell that he was really looking forward to this. It was then I noticed that Mr. Davis began giving my son tips and some additional direction on how to stand, aim, fire etc when honestly he could have just gone through the motions and finished up the class and gone home early on a Saturday. It was probably second nature for Mr. Davis, but I saw it. That made me realize that I had chosen the right instructor. If you have never fired a gun before, or an old guy like me that had no idea where to go to get this sort of training for your kids, or someone who just wants a qualified instructor without the pretentiousness and a no agenda presentation to firearms, you cannot go wrong with Clear Shot Austin. It was great, I'll be back for my renewal.

The mix of education, hands-on learning and laughs made the time fly by. Even our teen stayed interested the entire time (and that's saying something). The class takes place at an offsite location. We met at the entrance of the property and drove to the actual gun range. The class size was small. That means that we all got the individual attention needed for those of us new to the platform. A good mix of law enforcement, prior military service, EMTs, and civilians made for a very diverse and educational experience. If you are new to the AR platform, this is a very good class to take. Though there were some participants in full gear, all you need is your rifle and a way to carry two magazines. Other classes are available. Definitely check them out.

My girlfriend and I visited Red's Indoor Range North expecting a safe and enjoyable experience…read more Instead, we left feeling embarrassed, singled out, and disrespected. We were the only Black customers in the establishment at the time. After completing our paperwork, an employee named Joe stopped us and said we could not shoot because two customers had complained about a "weed smell." Neither of us uses marijuana or drugs. When we questioned how he determined the smell came from us, Joe admitted that he personally did not smell marijuana on or around us. Another employee who appeared to be a manager also told me he did not smell marijuana on me. He said he smelled perfume and suggested that may have contributed to the assumption. Given the circumstances, we felt racially profiled and unfairly singled out. What made it worse was that after I explained I am a former military police officer and currently work in corrections, the attitude toward us noticeably changed and became much more accepting. We should not have to explain our military service or profession to receive basic respect. The manager ultimately determined there was no reason we couldn't shoot, so after all of the embarrassment and suspicion, we were allowed to proceed. My girlfriend was a first-time shooter, but the employee assisting us afterward seemed uninterested and provided minimal instruction. The RSO was the one bright spot--he was professional, helpful, and checked on us multiple times throughout the experience. We were also surprised by the final bill. The signage stated $20 per lane, yet we were charged $20 per shooter even though we used one lane. We were also charged a $10 rental fee per shooter despite only renting one firearm. The pricing should have been clearly explained beforehand. Most disappointing of all, Joe never apologized, and neither did any other employee. I understand that a range must prioritize safety, and I have no issue with legitimate safety policies. But there is a difference between enforcing safety and making customers feel accused and profiled based on an allegation that the employee himself could not verify. We came in expecting a good experience and left feeling humiliated, misjudged, and disrespected. Based on our experience, we will not be returning to this location.
