I'm a gun phobe as you can tell by my avatar....oh wait, you CAN'T tell?? Well, that's only because these big-hearted special ops, security teddy bears helped me overcome my fears at a cancer charity fundraiser. They selflessly volunteered their time and expertise (and weapons) on a Sat afternoon, a rainy, muddy Sat afternoon to teach noobs like me how to handle a weapon. They let us pick from an array of their own guns for us to shoot. Being gun ignorant, I'll just say they had big guns, little guns, automatic rifles, AK's, handguns with silencers and long range sniper rifles. Yeah, these are the guys you want to have on speed dial for the Zombie Apocalypse. I'll be honest. I had very little intention of shooting a gun while there. I'm not only scared of them, but the whole idea of shooting a bunch of rounds at a target kinda bores me. I never was into video games either. My only intention for my donation was to get my picture taken with a big gun. But, reconsidering that I might never have another opportunity to shoot a big gun, I nutted up, so to speak. I randomly picked an automatic rifle that they said had little kickback and was escorted thru the slippery mud by BSG man Levi. He carefully told me how to hold the gun properly, leaning into the stock, sighting my target and then taking off the safety and firing. I decimated that little paper man with head shots, chest shots and groin shots (don't EFF with me!!). And while I don't think I'll be volunteering for the army, it was pretty exhilarating feeling that little power rush that comes from handling a powerful gun (insert penile joke here). Levi even thoroughly instructed me on how to pose with a gun for my picture. Safe to say, he knows all things guns. Hubby got to shoot Bill's huge long range sniper gun, with bullets the size of a Snickers bar. He was able to get some very accurate shots from 75 yards under Bill's tutelage. Hubby definitely had gun envy. I don't know how many charity events these guys do, but I felt like this was one of the most unique fundraisers I'd ever been to and a lot of money was raised for a good cause as even with the inclement weather, folks poured in to shoot big guns. Looking at their website, they do offer team building events tho which could be fun, although if I did this with MY co-worker, I'm sure there'd be a Dick Cheneyesque "accident". Hmmm, maybe I should look into it.....

Overall, this was an amazing experience which has significantly challenged and enhanced my skills. I can't wait to practice what we learned again at the range, as well progress with additional courses they offer. This is no weekend warrior shit. These guys are seasoned professionals who can coach you if your smart enough to close your mouth, and open your ears. Here is more details... I found Texas tactical Training institute on YELP, and while they had no reviews, their information and photos intrigued me to make a call and have an initial discussion. I spoke with Tim over the phone for more than 20 minutes, explaining what I was looking for and what he could recommend. He explained he was a former police officer who was now focussed on offering firearm training experiences for people of all skill levels, at a price that didn't scare people away. Within minutes you could feel his passion coming through the phone, and i was eager to get something scheduled. I shared the idea with a friend and we signed up for a 4-hour 'Intro to movement - pistol' class for the upcoming weekend. We were excited at the idea of receiving some training to improve our skills, but unsure what two 'seasoned' gun owners would be able to learn in just 4 hours. A few days ahead of the training day, we received instructions by email of where to meet the course instructor, and what to bring with us. On the day itself, it was unusually cold...39 degrees in April cold. This elevated the training to a new level, as we were both not prepared or used to shooting in such cold climate. When our hands were not tucked deep into our pockets in a effort to once again feel our fingers, our hands were a little shaky when shooting (or at least that was my excuse on the day.. he he). We started with a short yet descriptive safety brief, and jumped straight into some dry-fire exercises of turning 90 degrees and firing on the 'threat'. That is the word Instructor Dustin used when telling us to engage the target... "Threat". At that moment you would turn the 90 degrees, or 180 degrees, or start moving and shooting from various positions indicated by black circles of spray paint in the dirt that had just been created by Dustin and his his fellow Instructor Brian. Over the course of 4 hours we were introduced to various shooting exercises involving moving and shooting. My favorite phrase of the day (aside from "threat", which meant you were being told to engage the target), was "Push, Plant, Pull", which described your movements from one position to another. The push and planting refers to your feet, and the pull... well you can guess what that is for. We continued learning and practicing through the bitter 39 degree weather, breaking only for a few minutes here and there to return to the truck in an attempt to warm up and feel our fingers again. Dustin was an exceptional coach. He would watch you follow his instructions and offer specific minor changes to your body position, feet position, pistol grip, the elevation of my hands in relation to my eyes, and other small tweaks. All of which felt a little uncomfortable at first, kind of like I was shooting for the first time. However, this was a strong introduction to a new understanding that all my previous experience shooting was from a static position with no accountability of each round pushed through a paper target. I strongly recommend this training to firearm owners of all ages and skill levels. I also strongly recommend the 'intro to movement - pistol' course to anyone with a LTC, or someone looking to improve their skills.

My experience with Central Texas Gunworks was honestly shocking…read more My girlfriend and I ordered a firearm that was originally quoted to arrive in about 10 days. Instead, the order took over six weeks to arrive. Frustrating, but we were patient and waited. When the firearm arrived, my girlfriend went to pick it up. The store advertises closing at 6:00 PM, and she arrived after work at 5:55 PM. The gun was paid for so this was simply a pickup. When she arrived, the employees were already outside sitting in their cars getting ready to leave. She politely asked if they could go inside and complete the pickup since it was still before closing. Instead of helping her, the employees laughed at each other and joked about whether they were going to do it, then told her to "just come back tomorrow." She explained she had rushed there after work and arrived before closing. They claimed the credit card machine was broken, which was irrelevant because the firearm was already paid for. The worst part about this, the store owner Michael, sat and listened. and never lifted his head from his lap. Despite arriving before the posted closing time, and after waiting six weeks for an order that was supposed to take ten days, they refused to help her and continued dismissing her request. She was laughed at and treated with complete disrespect. This wasn't just inconvenient, it was unprofessional and humiliating customer service. If your business advertises that it closes at 6:00 PM, customers should be able to expect service until 6:00 PM, not be turned away at 5:55 by employees who have already decided they're done for the day. After a six-week delay, the least a business could do is treat a customer with basic respect. I hope this is addressed because no paying customer should be treated this way.

During pistol practice, a round became misaligned while loading my magazine. I immediately stopped, raised my hand, and alerted the RSO because I take firearm safety seriously. Instead of calmly explaining the situation, the RSO escalated immediately, told me my gun was "broken," said it was extremely dangerous, and instructed me to leave the firing line and go to a gun smith, without attempting to resolve it or providing any reassurance. You would think that I just armed a bomb. At the front desk, it was later confirmed that the firearm was not damaged and that the round had already fallen free, which made the earlier response feel excessive and confusing. What made this worse was the owner's public response to my Google review, which was dismissive, condescending and tried to gaslight the situation, instead of acknowledging how intimidating the situation was, the response reframed my experience as something I should be "pleased" about and implied incompetence on my part. He also tried to say the RSO was watching over 9 lanes with 18 people but there were only 2 other people there shooting in the entire range. Overall it was a really terrible experience and upon checking others reviews It seems the owner has a pattern of responding defensively. I would not recommend this range unless you are okay being talked down to and treated as incompetent. It did not feel women friendly and I will be making sure I take all my friends to any other local range. No one should be punished for trying to learn and asking for help.
