My experience with Central Texas Gunworks was honestly shocking. My girlfriend and I ordered a firearm that was originally quoted to arrive in about 10 days. Instead, the order took over six weeks to arrive. Frustrating, but we were patient and waited. When the firearm arrived, my girlfriend went to pick it up. The store advertises closing at 6:00 PM, and she arrived after work at 5:55 PM. The gun was paid for so this was simply a pickup. When she arrived, the employees were already outside sitting in their cars getting ready to leave. She politely asked if they could go inside and complete the pickup since it was still before closing. Instead of helping her, the employees laughed at each other and joked about whether they were going to do it, then told her to "just come back tomorrow." She explained she had rushed there after work and arrived before closing. They claimed the credit card machine was broken, which was irrelevant because the firearm was already paid for. The worst part about this, the store owner Michael, sat and listened. and never lifted his head from his lap. Despite arriving before the posted closing time, and after waiting six weeks for an order that was supposed to take ten days, they refused to help her and continued dismissing her request. She was laughed at and treated with complete disrespect. This wasn't just inconvenient, it was unprofessional and humiliating customer service. If your business advertises that it closes at 6:00 PM, customers should be able to expect service until 6:00 PM, not be turned away at 5:55 by employees who have already decided they're done for the day. After a six-week delay, the least a business could do is treat a customer with basic respect. I hope this is addressed because no paying customer should be treated this way. read more

One of the cheaper options to use if you need an FFL. Although they only call you once when your item arrives so it's kind of easy to miss out pick up. Best thing to do is to call when delivery is made to make sure. I used this as a transfer once a while back and they don't have text or email updates when your transfer is ready which would have been nice. I also went here recently for just the TLC shooting qualification. The instructor Mike was really helpful walking through the process. For people that are less experienced in the range they will get taken care of and instruction if needed to keep the range safe. I did have to listen to an insurance sales pitch even though i did take the full class here. But that just seems like a norm these days. read more

Yesterday, September 29, 2025, I was kindly greeted by the engaging owner, Michael Cargill, who not only has an impressive track record but is often present in the store - something I really value in an owner. The service was excellent: the staff (I wish I asked who helped me at the front desk) were welcoming, knowledgeable, and made my first purchase simple and stress-free. They walked me through the process of purchasing, entered my license information (just turned 21), and I was all set after paying the $35 transfer fee to pick up my Canik TP9 Elite SC. Since I don't yet have my LTC, I was already aware of the $35 charge before sending here for transfer (compared to $30 with LTC) when I purchased my handgun online and was glad that the process was quick and efficient. Would not recommend trying to purchase a gun from their website. I have no experience with any other areas of the business and cannot speak on them. Similar to other reviews, I ordered a shotgun from their website and ended up having to dispute the charge with my CC company to get my money back. Multiple times when I called, i was told to call back a week later for an update. Not sure if the gun was ever going to arrive to CTGW so cut my losses and took my business elsewhere.... I'm glad at least one person was happy recently, but I sure wasn't, exactly as numerous others haven't been. Unfortunately I order one gun two or three days before I found all of the bad reviews. As someone else was thoughtful enough to say, I cannot comment on any of the training and testing services. Perhaps they're the best in the world -- I don't know. However, I am never buying anything from them again. I wanted to buy local, but I certainly chose the wrong place. I was going to buy three guns this year, but I only ordered the cheapest one first "just in case". I have rare moments of brilliance, and that was one of them. First, I tried to order online, but for whatever reason, it wouldn't accept my credit card. Before I forget to mention it, they charge you 3% extra for using a credit card -- HOWEVER, I wouldn't ever want to make the mistake of paying by debit or cash, as you can read elsewhere here. I had maybe 12-15 items in my order, the gun, a red dot, a mag loader, and about ten different types of ammo to run through the gun for testing. I cut and pasted the list of stuff out of my shopping cart and emailed them so that they could put them into the system manually. I got a call back a few hours later and gave them my CC number and asked how long it would take. At the time it was a pretty popular gun so I asked how long it would take -- one week? eight weeks? If they'd have said eight weeks I'd have been OK with it, but "it'll be in in a week or two". OK, great -- two weeks then. I call after 2.5 weeks of hearing nothing (and after reading all of the horror stories) and ask for an update. "It'll be in in a week". One week passes, so I go in on a Thursday. It takes almost ten minutes of Michael going through the computer trying to figure "something" out and he finally says off-hand "it'll be here tomorrow or Monday". Mid-day Tuesday I call again and "it'll be in by Friday" and I'm set to reverse the charge on my CC on Friday if I don't get my order. I get a text on Thursday or Friday - "Your gun is here ready to be picked up.". Nice - or so I thought. I get there and only about six of 12-15 items are in the box. Nothing else but the gun, the loader and four boxes of ammo, including just one of three boxes of one type that I ordered. The not-totally-nuts check only takes about ten minutes and I pack my partial fill up. I ask for a copy of the invoice that I can mark up to make sure that they know what I still haven't received, and tell them to have Michael call me by the end of the day. He does. As usual it takes ten minutes for him to wade through the computer to confirm what's missing. "It'll be here next week". All the voices in my head say "Uh huh...". I get a call in a week saying that the rest of my stuff is there to get picked up. Nice. One month after the initial order. I feel like I got off easy after reading all of the other reviews. Surprise? Not everything is there in the box for me to take home. I look in and it seems ok and get ready to leave, but those voices in my head again say "better check!". I go through each item and have to make two piles -- Mine and Not-Mine. All but one $12 box of ammo that I expected were there, and three boxes for me to take weren't -- probably $60 worth of good ammo. I hand the Not-Mine back to Tom (who was always very helpful throughout my many calls and visits) and ask him if my missing box is around anywhere. He hunts down Michael and they spend 5-10 minutes looking around for it. I tell them that if they have any adequate substitute, and he offers me a box of steel case ammo which is cheaper and that I don't want to shoot and I turn it down. He doesn't offer me anything worth at least $12, so he says that he'll get my last box for me and give me a call. That was at least three weeks ago. PURELY in the interests of science I thought, maybe I'll see if his training/testing reviews were believable and go to him to take my LTC shooting test, but I decided that the world would be better served by my eating the $12, never seeing CTGW again, and leaving the review that I feel is deserved. Not because I want to relive this small nightmare, but for hopefully saving others their own horrible purchasing experience. All that plus the indignity of my $382 gun going on sale in the meantime at Academy a couple of blocks away for about $315 after multiple stacked discounts, and out in 30 minutes instead of 30+ days. I had to mention the cacophony of voices in my head to give Michael an excuse to question my mental health, as he does with many of his other customers that have left unflattering reviews. The owner, Michael Cargill, runs a well-documented scam where they take orders for items, keep your money, and never deliver them to the purchaser. Do not buy from this store or support this business. I purchased from CTGW to support a local shop only to find out they have an established pattern of running the same scam. Read the other reviews. The only way to get your money back is to file a chargeback with your bank/credit card company because CTGW will promise to and never issue a refund. My order was placed in person at the store on 7/15/2024 with a 1-2 week promised delivery timeframe. I called and went into the store once a week for 9 weeks and was told every time by Michael Cargill, the owner, that they received the item but I was "skipped over" and it would be in "later this week" and they would call me to come pick it up. He refused to give me shipping info and gave me this same message 9 times.This exact thing has happened to at least dozens of other people as evidenced by google and reddit reviews. This store has a pattern of taking money without delivering products. I am writing this review to share my deeply disappointing experience with Central Texas Gun Works. I purchased two guns from their online store on 7/3/2024, which were listed as in stock and available. Upon calling the store that same day, I was informed that the items were not in stock and needed to be ordered. I was assured that they would arrive the following week and was advised to check back on 7/11/2024. Despite this assurance, I was not contacted by the store on the promised date. When I called them, the owner informed me that the items would take another week and asked me to check back on 7/18. I was on vacation that day and followed up on 7/23, only to be told once again to wait another week and check back on 8/1. On 8/1, after calling the store, I was told that only the owner could look up order numbers and that he would call me back. Anticipating further delays, I decided to visit the store in person. Before doing so, I checked online reviews and discovered a concerning pattern of similar complaints. Many customers reported waiting months without receiving their orders or refunds, having to resort to chargebacks through their credit card companies. When I visited the store in person, the owner made me wait for 30 minutes before informing me that the order was still not available and might take another week. Recognizing the pattern described in other reviews, I chose not to argue. Instead, I initiated a chargeback through my credit card company. The dispute for products not rendered is now under investigation by my bank. Here are a few excerpts from other customer reviews reflecting similar issues: "I ordered a firearm that was shown to be available. Just completed the LTC Class and range with Michael. Very knowlegable and proficient instructor both in the class room and the range. The price all in is a bargain. Also just transfered 2 weapons though his FFL with no problems and in a very time efficient fashion. And took my full auto Thompson in for a full breakdown and cleaning with his in-house gunsmith (shout out to Tom, Great Job) at an incredibly great price. Took it in on a Saturday and out the following Thursday. That is very quick service from a gunsmith in my experience. Tom also took a look at a pistol for me while i was picking up and very quickly diagnosed the issue, free of charge. My partner and I scheduled a gun safety class for sunday morning 9-12 because he had a voucher to use. The process of booking it required me to call the store for help because the website wasn't allowing me to input the voucher numbers. The class ran over by 1 hour so i was late for the things i had planned afterwards. This is not a class to get your LTC by the way, just gun safety. The description did not indicate we would learn how to shoot a gun, we were able to shoot 4 different ones. You start with Michael in the classroom learning the various laws and the loopholes around those laws. then you drive 24 minutes to the range, outdoors, and wait and watch as the team set up the targets. we were a group of 14 so you split up. I was in the group that shot the AR-15 and rifle. The instructor i wish focused more on the gun safety of these two large and powerful weapons of destruction rather than how cool it is to shoot with them. It was slightly triggering for me as Uvalde's tragedy occurred a year ago. I didn't appreciate the humor and jokes as much as the information. This is one-on-one lesson. You shoot 5 rounds with the AR-15 and 3 rounds with the rifle. Then you switch. The instructor for the hand guns 22mm and 9mm was more informative, focused on safety, went over to each of us to adjust our grip, told us where and when to fire then provided feedback. You shoot 10 and 5 rounds. Afterwards, the group regroups for any questions. They suggested that you go to The Range to practice shooting different guns before making a purchase. On Wednesday's if you're a lady or go with a lady, it's discounted. They also provided possible next steps after taking the class (work on proficiency before taking the LTC class). Then we drove home from the range, located east near COTA. I would bring your own safety glasses (i purchased mine the night before at Academy for $13) and they provide ear protection (i would consider buying my own, these were a bit small on my big head and weren't adjustable). overall, the classroom session was informative and the questions some of the participants asked revealed why they were there taking a gun safety class. The shooting gave you experience safely handling 4 different guns and get a feel for the kickback and sounds. I didn't mind the drive but would have liked a heads up. They have a van to transport you if you don't want to drive your own car. read more

1 star is generous. Never in my life have I encountered such a potent combination of incompetency and deliberate malice, rivaled only by DMV and TSA employees. Michael, the owner of the store, is attempting to steal customer's money, and the store needs to be shut down. If you attempt to purchase anything through them, they will gladly take your payment, often times 1000's of dollars, upfront, and refuse to give you any details on how long shipments will take or when you can expect to receive them. After 2 months of not receiving any email, any updates, any texts or phone calls, I reach out to the store. Michael answers the phone. He asks for my order number, which I have to dig up, and informs me that it should be here "by next week", and that he will call me when he receives it. Next week, I give him another call, asking for the status. Almost acting like we had never spoken, he states that it should be there "by the end of the week". I ask for possible tracking or more specific info, and never receive it. This game continues for a couple more months. It has now been 4 months since I've placed my order, and he has had my money the entire time. I've called well over 20 times. I call, he answers, states it will be there next week, and he never calls me. It is worth noting that I did not receive a SINGLE phone call from Michael despite him "assuring" me that he would call me every single time that we spoke. It became excruciatingly clear by this point that I was never going to receive my order. At first, I thought that this was mere incompetency, but it became clear to me by this point that there was something purposefully malicious going on. Is the store late on rent? Is is a dying business that needs to pay debts? It was at this point that I came to read the reviews of the store and found that not only am I not the only one, but that this is a COMMON occurrence. From reading the reviews I decided it was far past time for me to simply request a refund. Michael states that I will get a refund processed within a few weeks. A week later I read a review that states that they never received a refund after months from being issued the refund. They stated that they never received an email confirming the refund. I realize that I never received an email. I call the next week and ask for a confirmation email of my refund, and he states that HE NEVER ISSUED THE REFUND, THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH "THE SYSTEM", AND THAT HE WOULD DO IT NOW. He blatantly lied the week before that he had issued the refund, and if I had not called him he wouldn't have. But it gets worse. Weeks pass again and I receive no update and no refund. From speaking with the other victim, it turns out that the only way you will get your money back is to dispute the charge directly with your credit card (if you pay with cash, you may be screwed and have to take him to court). When I reach out to my credit card, to check if a refund has been issued and processing, it turns out that THEY NEVER EVEN RECEIVED A REQUEST TO REFUND. He lied again, blatantly, even sending an email pretending to have issued a refund. Luckily, things run smoothly on the end of my credit card dispute. 5+ months from purchasing from CenTex, I finally have my money back. CenTex currently owes me 5+ months of interest on the loan that I gave them. That is precisely what you are doing if you give them money. At best, it is a loan that you will need to fight to get back, with no interest. At worst, you will lose your money, or have to bring them to small claims court. I have read reviews here defending their gun classes. I would never take a class from a company that is essentially an illegal criminal operation and openly lies to and swindles their customers with no remorse. From my short interactions on the phone with Michael and from speaking with others, he is clearly some sort of narcissist that gets off on taking peoples money and getting a reaction out of them. It is all a game to him. He needs to be taken to court and the business needs to be shut down. I have a feeling that the positive reviews here are paid for or fake. There is no redeeming qualities to this business, and in my entire life I have never had a worse customer experience. read more

Summary: Believe every single one-star review about Michael Cargill / CTGW taking your money and not delivering what you purchased. Pay by credit card or you'll never get your money back. They misrepresent what is in stock, allow you to order what isn't in stock, and charge your credit card without fulfilling your order. Later, they'll tell you the gun had to be ordered, and then that it has been shipped, yet it mysteriously never becomes available for pickup. When researching a FFL for a gunbroker purchase, I found CTGX. Amazingly, they had the exact gun on their site that I was going to purchase with a status of "available" at the same price. So I purchased the gun on their website. I called them the next day to ensure I could pick it up. When I spoke with Michael Cargill, he said that, actually, the rifle had not been in stock, that it had been ordered from a distributor in Minnesota, and that it would arrive in about a week. I told him that I found his website to be deceptive and that I'd never have ordered had I known it wasn't in stock. He was very pleasant (although 100% unapologetic) so I decided to let it ride as I was in no hurry. I call back a week later, at which time Michael tells me that it is "about to ship" from the distributor. Exercising yet more poor judgement, I agree to continue to wait. I call back in another week and speak with Michael again. He says that there was a problem with the original distributor, that he placed another order with a distributor in Florida, that the rifle had already been shipped, and that it would arrive the following week. I was a little skeptical that he had actually been that proactive, but OK, what's just one more week, right? So now I'm at the three week mark and again call to check status. After three calls and 30+ minutes on hold, Michael finally gets on the phone. He asks a few questions and ostensibly does some things on the computer for a few minutes. He eventually says that it can't be picked up yet because, get this, "it is still being processed." I ask repeatedly what "being processed" means. He is evasive and he can't provide any specifics other than it means "it's not available for pickup yet." I finally ask if he has the rifle, to which he responded, "no". I told Michael that my patience had been exhausted and that I was going to call American Express and dispute the charges. His response was, "would you like me to reverse charge?" As a final example of stupidity on my part, I said, "sure." The following day, I call American Express. No surprise that there is no record of a reversal. So I dispute the charge with them and I'm good. But I've wasted 3+ weeks and a couple of hours. In reflecting on all this I realize that I was inclined to cut Michael slack because he was always very polite and, on the surface, helpful on the phone. However, I was struck by his use of the term "being processed." It is a masterfully crafted term intended to hide the actual specifics of the situation. And his earlier status updates were all very vague, such as "it has been shipped", never "it was shipped on MM/DD and will arrive on MM/DD." I never received any responses from Michael that were specific until I finally got him to admit he didn't have the rifle. Once I'd come to this realization, I concluded that he's a professional at this. Look at what's in common with all the one-star reviews here: * take your money * sell what they don't have * never contact you -- you have to call them repeatedly * offer a litany of non-specific excuses * tell you they are issuing a refund and don't do it If there were just one or two of these, they could be flukes. But there are literally dozens that exactly match this pattern. I signed up the evening before a class was scheduled. Later that evening had an emergency and needed to cancel the class. I sent email due to it was after hours. In that email asked for a refund if possible. Got no reply. Few business days later I sent follow up email and guess what.. I got a quick reply stating that the classes are non-fundable if cancelling more then 24 hours before the class. I informed them I didn't see any of that listed on the website and so forth. Due to the lack of professionalism and lack of customer service I cant recommend this company to anyone. I am also a prior service NCO in the Army as the Owner claims he is.. the first line of the NCO Creed is that No one is more professional then I. I took the LTC class with Michael, and I was beyond impressed, I really enjoyed the class, learned quite a few things, and was fully engaged the whole time. Really Mr Cargill had us all under his spell. He is a fantastic instructor, and I really think everyone in Texas who wants the right to carry should take this class. You need it, whether you realize you need it or not. On top of that, they brought in some of the best breakfast tacos I've ever had. And we all did well at the range. In fact, I recommend this class to everyone whether you want to carry or not. Knowing the law is very important, and I thought I did know the law, but I most clearly did not. Very rude staff that are a bunch of know it all a-holes. Every question I asked what met with a rude or short response. First I asked if they sell 7.62 and the gun counter worker says "yes" I asked how much a round and he says "we don't have any". He did not answer my question and did not even bother what so ever. On September 1 online I bought a shotgun their system said was in inventory, it was not. When it hadn't arrived that month, I called twice and both times was told it was on the truck and would be received the next week, it wasn't. I then asked for a refund and was told it would be on my credit card a week to ten days later, it wasn't. I've had to dispute the charge on my credit card, rather than admit they never provided the firearm so I get a timely refund, they are sitting on dispute until credit card will reimburse me after their time to dispute has expired. They can't dispute the credit card charge, because gun sales require documentation upon delivery they don't have, because they don't deliver. read more

UPDATED AGAIN: DO. NOT. BUY. A. GUN. FROM. HERE. 10-15 business days is the canned response for parts and every time me you call you'll receive no information IF YOU CAN EVEN SPEAK TO SOMEONE. I've been placed on hour long holds more than 10 times now only to be hung up on by whoever is managing the queue. Ordered a firearm and designated CTGW as my FFL. After getting a shipping confirmation from the vendor I used CTGW o line form to let them know I'd placed an order and it was delivered. Got a call within a few hours that it was ready for pickup. When I stopped by they saw me quickly had me fill out the required paperwork, had me inspect my firearm and I walked out with my gun and some free knowledge passed along by the staff. AVOID! I ordered a firearm on 7/6/23 to be shipped to his store and I would pick up. A week went by and I never received any confirmation that it shipped so I called on 7/14/23 and he said it could take another two weeks to arrive. Two weeks later I called to see if it arrived and he said it was backordered and could take two more weeks. I waited another week and called and he said it could take a few more weeks, at which time I requested a refund and he reluctantly agreed. It took him almost two weeks and several emails from me to get him to issue a refund that I saw on my credit card as a pending transaction for several days. Today the pending transaction has disappeared on my credit card. Almost two months later, I have initiated a chargeback on my credit card and filed a complaint with BBB. What a scammer. read more

Disclaimer: this rating is only for gun sales. I have not taken classes through Centex Gun works and have every reason to believe that the numerous 5 star reviews on here are well earned. That being said: I had a terrible experience trying to buy a gun from Central Texas Gun Works. The short version: 7 months of being told it's 2 weeks out ended with Mr. Cargill admitting it was out of stock and asking if I wanted to consider a different gun. Luckily he did not push back at all when I asked for a refund. I know the gun was in stock when I ordered it because their shopping site only shows firearms in stock. Trouble is they don't seem to have any system or method for managing an order backlog. It was crystal clear over repeated phone calls that there was a problem with the order (the distributor waiting for some kind of confirmation from Centex Gun Works) and nobody had worked on it until I called. The feedback was always "it will be here in 2 weeks." Speaking of calling - Mr. Cargill is the only individual who can answer questions on gun orders. So if he's in a class, you have to call back. Also they don't answer the phone after 4pm on weekdays. I've bought from Central Texas Gun works before - one gun purchase and one FFL transfer. I doubt I will be going back. I understand the firearms market is crazy right now, but if an item is in stock on their website it shouldn't take 7 months of calling and asking for updates to complete the order, much less to ultimately cancel it. Again I have no doubt their core business of firearms training is solid. Just don't buy a gun from here. read more
