McBride's Coin Department has been serving Austin since 1990, but I visited it for the first time recently. A family-run business, the Coin Dept ladies are superb subject-matter-experts on obscure matters of coins and metals. It's a refreshing old school blast to the pre-internet past - original paneling and cool display cases - including one for pocket watches. It's also a great place for tweens/teens to learn about important stuff and find unique vintage gifts. I arrived at a busy time and I had to wait a bit to buy/sell bullion - and I just enjoyed being there. Also, the security is excellent, being part of McBride's Guns, and in a unique location that feels safe and cozy. The coin department has its own entry, the southern door off the same parking lot (accessible via 30th Street or San Gabriel). You can also reach it indoors from the Gun shop. If you come here expecting the modern new high energy tacicool vibes then your gona be disappointed. This is a classic old school gun store, from the smell, the look and the almost intimidating seasoned guys that work the counter because of their wealth of knowledge. I'm 36 and my parents would tell me stories of shopping here with original owner. Its awesome to buy stuff here also. Speaking of buying guns here, I have bought 2 from them, I have bought my AUG and my Kel-Tec Defender. One was new and one was used, great deals on both. They honored the online price with AUG even though it was minor typing error and Kel-Tec was sold for great value because of some flaws. Both ran perfectly with no issues. I do a lot of research on any gun I buy and visit a lot of gun stores but I always fine myself coming back to them and making the hour to hour and haft drive. Great guys great service and they really know their stuff! I would've given them five stars, but I was looking for a particular shotgun and they sold me a model that was too powerful for me. Well, they did allow me to return it, so that's fair and good. But, I was expecting to actually purchase *another one* - one that was more in line with my needs/expectations. The reason they aren't getting five stars is because they never called me back to tell me that they had the correct model in stock. Maybe they never got it? I don't know because I never heard from anybody. I wouldn't never write them off simply for that. And, I think they have a pretty good amount of stock. I am not a super big gun aficionado, obviously. I brought my gun in for a warranty service. They kept my gun 8 months! they said they are waiting on parts When I called to check on status. Finally they said they couldn't find part. They said manufacturer didn't make part. They couldn't fix it . They said they smoothed out barrel so they charged me. It was a new gun. It was only used once. I guess they wanted to make a little money off of me. So I took it to Cabella's because warranty was still good for 1 month. They sent it in to manufacturer and they fixed it and I received it back in perfect condition after 1 month. They said Mc Brides never contacted them for parts. I have never had such poor service As McBrides' service. They should not be a manufacturer warranty service center if they can't do the job right. read more

I've been to McBrides several times..I've bought pistols and ammo. This is a throwback old school gun shop, not the Apple Store styles of the modern era. What I liked- Their staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. The prices are good, and the selection is very good, from high ended firearms to budget friendly Used guns are very good. Went a few weeks ago and forgot to leave a review , the gun selection is alright , if your a hunter then this place could be for you , lots of shotguns , not many rifles in my opinion, service is terrible , they asked me my age and I told them and then they said I can't purchase a rifle cause I'm not 21 , there store policy one of the workers said. There are tons of guns here though we came to sell a gun and we feel like we got a good price for it. The wait actually wasn't terribly long at all which others had warned about. The only issue was when the salesperson forgot to return my friend's license and we realized it an hour later. Luckily they still had it and we got it back from reception. The staff is extremely knowledgeable but limited. When it's your turn, the staff will give you their full attention for as long as you need...don't expect to walk in and cut in line. If you're in a rush and don't have time to wait then maybe you shouldn't be purchasing a gun! The staff is both old and young, male and female and I'm not sure why that even matters but some of the reviews were a little unfair and if you've only visited once it's hard to truly describe the entire staff. Waited forever for a salesman, only to be told that he wouldn't sell me a gun unless he calls the attorney general and they aren't in after noon. WTF? It's a long gun. You check reciprocity, which I have and fill out the federal form. Went to bass pro, picked up the same gun without any hassles. Guys don't know the difference between handgun and long gun laws. I will say McBride's has a great selection of guns. Having said that, the customer service on the gun side of the store has always been poor. You have to wait and wait even when there are two or three of their people back in the office doing nothing. A pretty decent selection of new and used guns. The prices are decent, but not the lowest. Location is convenient if you're downtown, and I always prefer to buy local. BUT... the customer service is horrible, in-person and on the phone. It always seems like you are bothering them with questions, and they have better things to do. They only have one gunsmith, and he seems to only work when he feels like it. I asked when my gun is estimated to be ready, or if I would get a call about how much it would cost to service or what was wrong with it. Some of these reviews are laughable. McBride's is an epic and classic gun, outdoor, and coin shop. There are things to look at for hours in here. Note: take a number to get help, they're busy folks. It's well worth the wait because they have an incredibly knowledgeable sales team. Often you deal with members of the McBride family directly. Yeah, their prices are a little higher than a box store, but you get amazing service and often will find pieces here that you won't find at your run of the mill outdoor store. My father, uncle, and husband have all been going to this place their entire life. Oh, once I was there browsing around and found a clearance Filson vest that was a steal! If you're in a rush, this is not the place you need to go. But, if you want oodles of info and lots of great help, wait in line and they'll never rush you. Finally...buy and shop local!! I saw one other Hispanic gentlemen in the shop that never got helped and took off after tired of waiting - it took my husband going up to the counter and within moments getting asked if he needed anything then he pointed out me and then finally I get service. The answer was quick, I want to say lickety-split. Direct and to the point which is typical of a locally owned joint. I'm 25 so, brick and mortar stores aren't something I value that much. I've been to this place ever since I was a kid though. Bunch of old guys so they are by no means in a hurry, I came in to pick up a lower parts receiver I ordered from their site (price was really competitive)... got delayed, which sucks because their hours of operation are horrible. I mean, 5:30 on weekdays? Had to pick it up on a weekday so I left work 30 minutes early (I work downtown), and I called once and asked them to please not close on me at 5:30 and told them I'd be there ASAP. Didn't really give me an answer. Called 15 minutes later told them I'm going to be there, and the old guy said something smart*ss and I dished it back out to him. Got there at 5:33 PM on a Friday... he was standing outside and asked me if I was the guy who called. Had my receiver in the box, had me sign a paper, and let me go. McBride's has been known for having shotty customer service (pun intended), but... I really appreciate what they did for me. They'll get a lot of business from me. read more

UPDATE: I'm done! No more chances, McBride's; just bad word of mouth! I gave them a FOURTH try. A younger employee offered to assist me within three minutes of entering, but still have profanity flying around me (while carrying my little girl!) Too many other options to put up with that garbage. You work in customer service, speak like it! I've been here three times while shopping around for my first handgun and first rifle. The first trip was great; pleasant interactions with employees as I browsed. The high point of the second visit was the profanity the man behind the counter used in conversation with me while I held my 2 year old daughter in my arms. I decided to give them another try. On the third visit I stood at the counter for several minutes while the closest employee had finished helping another customer and, no longer showing him a gun or answer questions, just stood there and chatted with him for several minutes without asking if I needed help with anything. He then disappeared for several minutes and, when he returned, asked not one but TWO people who came in after me if they needed help.
