no Customer Service the front desk receptionist is good and bad days. I guess I got her on a bad day very snippy. She handled my rifles by the barrel with no gloves after I just paid it over $150 to get them cleaned and oiled which I didn't appreciate, I think contacted the gunsmith. He was much better. They all need to take a course in customer service especially around the Christmas season but I guess it's all about the them making a profit. read more

I'm giving them 2 stars because my third experience was decent. I figured I'd give them a shot (pun intended) since they're a 3 minute drive from my job. First time in: waited 25 minutes to be helped. I asked for assistance, was asked to wait. No problem. Another salesperson finishes up with a customer, then goes to help someone else. Whatever, it's disorganized. By the time I do get helped though, ffl transfer finally gets finished and I pay, it's taken an hour. (I've had other places take 15 minutes to do an ffl transfer). $50 for the transfer. Second time in: another ~1 hour transfer, had I not already had something being shipped here I wouldn't have been back in after the first experience but it was too late. Then I go to pay. $75 this time for a transfer. All of a sudden their transfer prices have jumped 50%? Third time: again, stuff was already in the mail so I'm stuck with McBrides as the transferring shop. Helped quickly, guy was nice, but paid way too much for a simple transfer. Unless you're a longtime returning customer on a first name basis with someone who works here, I wouldn't recommend this place. It's not fast, they're 50/50 on being helpful, gun prices don't seem competitive, and transfer fees are silly (go to GT distributors or CenTex guns and get a $30 transfer instead). read more

McBride's was recommended to me by a lady who was LBJs secretary when he was a senator in Texas. I don't shop there every week (Who does?) but the two times that I have gone to McBride's have convinced me that this is the place for any serious gun buyer. Today, I went to trade a particular weapon that really isn't practical for me. I had an idea of the guns worth from the internet. I understand that the worth to a retail outlet isn't the same as selling to another buyer. I got an offer from Mr. McBride that I thought was right on the mark and so, we did business. I purchased a different style of weapon and got a check back for the balance. The clerk that I dealt with was knowledgeable and pleasant to do business with. What more could I ask for? read more

After a recent purchase in the firearms category, I decided to add in a few optional extras. A third clip was the only missing piece. After calling most of Austin, McBride's said they had one in stock. I'll give them props for having something that others didn't; but thats where my praise ends. I strolled in around lunch to find the gun area bustling with business. Perhaps a tad understaffed, I waited for around 10 minutes waiting for a sales associate to become free. Once free instead of asking if he could help, he started rearranging pistols in the cases. The guy made eye contact with me and instead of offering help, basically ignored me. McBrides, if I want this level of customer service I'll shop at Wal-Mart. I finally approached him asking for what I needed. He seemed annoyed that I was tearing him away from his all important task. Another ten minutes and I was finally paying for my merchandise. Counter service was friendly when paying; but the demeanor of the actual sales guy will lead me to purchase my future gun and accessories elsewhere. For as long as they've been in business in this town; I expected more Texas hospitality. read more

This was my late grandfather's favorite gun store. I've bought a few firearms here as an adult and think this is what a great gun store should be! They've got an amazing selection of quality products and brands. I've taken my son here to shop for his first shotgun and I hope it's around long enough for him to take his son there too! This is an iconic Austin establishment and Austin is very lucky to have this place... I currently live in Dallas and we don't have anything nearly as good, although Ray's Sports Store in Trinity Groves does have some similar qualities (about 1/2 as cool)! read more

The gunsmiths here are excellent and the best price I have found in town. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and are pleasant to talk to. I even sold a pistol here for a great price. If you come during a busy time then expect to wait but that's normal for anywhere in Austin. They have an excellent selection of pistols and shotguns. Great customer service. I recently bought a new hunting rifle from them and by the time I got it home I realized I had the wrong caliber. They could of turned me away for not checking before I bought it, but they gave me a full value trade for a new rifle. I highly recommend the establishment. Unlike a lot of the other reviewers, I have never had a bad experience at McBride's. I have purchased a gun here and the whole process was very smooth. I've never had an issue with customer service and I'm always assisted in a timely manner. I do wish they had a larger selection of used guns, because that's all I'm ever in the market for, but I understand that might not make up the majority of their sales. Terrible customer service. Went in during a sale and actually saw a handgun I have been looking for for awhile. I politely asked a sales clerk if I could see it and wasn't even acknowledged. He just stared at me and walked away and proceeded to talk to other customers instead. Waited around 5-10 minutes while various other clerks bsed among themselves and didn't offer any help. Eventually I realized why am I offering to give money to a business that doesn't even care if I'm a customer and I walked out. I was a customer at McBride's before but, never again. Even by the usually low standards of gun shop politeness and customer service this place sinks to new lows and I'm just done with it. I originally blew this place off because of some of the reviews. Then, recently, I had THE WORST experience with a popular, highly reviewed, gun dealer in the area. Any woman can tell you that gun shops can be like automotive shops in that the folks working there just assume every "pretty little lady" is buying her first gun and needs a "big strong man" to tell her what to buy. Picking up the phone is cringeworthy when you need to talk about a firearm. I called these guys and got Shawn on the phone. He was knowledgeable, he listened to me, he found what I was looking for, he was respectful, and he was attentive. Then when I realized the other dealer ran my card even though they gave me no product and had to cancel my order, I called back. I got another employee who was kind, respectful, attentive, and friendly. This is how a business should be run. I am particularly happy to have found this place because while I am not new to firearms, I am not a guru. When I am making a purchase, I need someone to listen to me, answer questions, and just generally be helpful. These guys are top notch! I highly recommend this shop. I will ABSOLUTELY be returning for my next firearm purchase! read more

Took my .22 rifle in for a "Tune-up" because it hadn't been fired in 20+ years. The gunsmith looked it over, and made an adjustment. No charge, wouldn't even take a tip. Very nice and polite employees. Will be back! read more

I have purchased 6 or 7 guns (shotguns, pistols and rifles) as well as having sold several guns to McBrides and I have been treated fairly every time without fail. When I go in, yes it is usually busy, but that is because people go there because they have good prices and the guns in stock. I would definitely recommend McBrides to any other gun shop in the area and will continue to go there for any gun requirement I may hay. To another post, yes their ammo is not always the cheapest, but that is because places such as Cabelas sell much greater quantities, so of course they will have better pricing. read more

This is the very best coin shop in Austin by far. The people are very nice and will help you for about as long as you need. The ladies who work the coin shop are very kind and knowledgeable, also they will talk coins with you for 30min to and hour if there is not another customer. Despite what some other reviewers say, these people are most certainly not racist, I have some black friends who have had just as great of an experience as I have had. They almost always have the coins you are looking for ( unless it is a really rare or expensive one). The prices are fair and they can recommend other shops/people for you to find what you are looking for if you are even unlucky enough to not find what you are looking for in the store. This store is over 60 years old and for a reason. The reviews about staff being unkind is most likely because the reviewers were unkind/irritating first. I have been using this store for a few years now and every time I walk in is even better than the last, the staff treat you very well and those who can't recognize that are fools to say the least. I have never had the misfortune to meet such a wide selection of complete assholes. The clerks are rude, snotty and condescending. This one little cretin with the fingernails of a corpse stands out in particular. I asked a simple question and got a lecture from this little prick. I was 22 years in combat arms, CIB and a Ranger Tab. I couldn't give one shit that this little bastard was an armorer for the FBI. I paid for three weapons with my AmEx Black Card, and his tune sure did change. Enough about the charming staff, let's talk prices. The prices at this gyp joint are way too high. You might find a nice vintage weapon here but with the advent of online marketplaces, you have a much better selection on the internet. Go to Bass or Cabellas. Listen we have been buying guns and doing business with them for 40 years. This last incident has just caused them my business. I took a gun in there back in Feb. For them to repair. This gun is an antique and is worth a little money. I waited for months for them to call and finally after 6 months I called and they couldn't find my gun. They were rude to my wife too. I went to McBride's today to make a purchase and support a local business. I am woman. I had a terrible experience shopping at McBride's and judging from previous reviews, I am not the first woman to experience sexism and discrimination in this store. I was ignored by multiple employees when I asked questions about their products. I could not find anyone to give me the help I needed to make an informed purchase. When someone finally responded to me, they talked down to me in an obviously demeaning and degrading way. To top it off, when I was checking out, a man put his hands on me. He inappropriately touched me, called me "little lady", and laughed as he walked off. No one at McBride's had any kind of reaction to this behavior. I became very uncomfortable and then quickly left the store. Don't shop at McBride's. The pieces of shit at this store are clearly very sexist and have extreme neo-Nazi vibes. Went to McBrides yesterday to look for some guns. I am a 2A advocate that enjoys most firearms. They have a great collection along with worst customer service. I was in there with a friend for 20 minutes before they even acknowledged us. After that we waited another 10 minutes before we left. The 3 guys in there were working, but interestingly enough one guy kept answering the phone and talking to people, but would not help a person right in front of them Hey Mcbrides, I'll just shop gunbroker and save some money, since you don't want it. read more

Worst customer service and worst retail experience I've ever had. EVRR HAD. EVER. Week 1- I tried to call, was in hold for 30 minutes before anyone answered. I showed up in person and it took them 30 minutes to engage with me while waiting at the gun counter. After I pick out my gun, scope, it's 4:45. The salesman tells me it's too late to call in a background check because they're closing in 15. Horrible operation hours 9-5 M-F. Must take off for work on every trip up there. The salesperson promised everything would be laid out for a very easy process the next day. I call the next day at 0900. Salesperson I speak to has no idea where any of my parts are, as the salesperson who sold to me was off that day. They suggested I show up the next day to finalize with my salesperson. I return the following day. After paying for the gun, They advise that the background check might take another day. They tell me that four days later (Friday), my check had gone through. I show up on Monday in the afternoon, around 4 PM, and they had still not mounted my scope. The salesperson told me it was too late in the day to mount the scope. I would have to return AGAIN to pickup my gun. This became an altercation after I pushed back that they needed to mount my scope that afternoon. I spoke with the owner, Joe, about my frustrations with this entire experience. He said that this was not their fault and that I had no reason to be upset and that he did not appreciate my attitude. He did call someone to mount my scope at that time. I left with my gun that afternoon. After returning home, I notice that the recoil pad (butt) on my brand new gun is peeling off. The gunsmith is only there Monday to Wednesday so I had to wait another week to bring it to the in shop gunsmith to fix. He advised that this wasn't their fault, and suggested that I had done something to it. I had not used the gun yet. He told me that I would need to pay for the repairs at this time, or that they could ship it back to the manufacturer. I spoke with the owner AGAIN. He offers to fix it as it would cost the same to fix as it would to ship. The gunsmith suggests it will be a WEEK to re glue the butt to the gun. I return the next week in order to pick up my repaired gun. The butt had been repaired. At the gun range, I realize the scope isn't magnifying. Come to find out, they had installed it I correctly. Do not go there. 0/10 review. read more

I've had it with this place. The guy who said go in, speak as little as possible, and get out, hit the nail on the head. I've been reloading and shooting for almost 45 years, and have been in and out of McBride's since the 70's. I've done thousands of dollars worth of business there. Yet, every time I go in, EVERYBODY I talk to acts like they're pissed off at something. I'm not a slob customer, either; I'm near 60, professionally dressed and know guns (rifles, shotguns, pistols, IPSC, clays, reloading, NRA Certified Firearms Instructor) and salt and freshwater fishing forwards, backwards and sideways. I have met a COUPLE of people there who are nice, but in general all you get is a frown and a facial expression that says, "what the f*ck do YOU want"? Case in point: A few days ago, I called asking if they had a certain model of rifle in stock. It's a new model that just came out. He said, "what's that?" I told him. He mumbled, "justaminnit," sounding very irritated. Then he came back and said, "we don't have'em." I politely said "well, thanks, sir, I appreciate your help." He didn't say anything; he just SLAMMMED the phone down. Well, SHEESH. FINE!! I'll take my money somewhere ELSE! Later that day, I went into the store personally to ask about it. Same old sh*t. Finally some jerk behind the counter - he looked like he had a bad hangover - "nope, don't have it" and stood there looking around the room as if I had just vanished. I asked, politely, "do you just not carry them, or are you sold out of them?" He sighed, frowning, looking irritated that I had ASKED ANOTHER QUESTION, and leered, with a smartass smirk on his face, "oh, nobody wanted'em, so we just got rid of'em." I know for a fact that this is utter, total bullcrap, and that he just made that up; this gun's only been on the market a couple of months, and is a HUGE seller. He just said that to avoid having to wait on me. And I'm standing there with my checkbook in my hand. What an idiot. This keeps happening over and over and over. Enough. I am never, never, ever going to McBride's again. read more

It's a big gun/ fishing/ gold buying store. No one is going to go out of their way to help you but when you do finally get help the guys generally are knowledgeable. If you are 50+, wearing a cowboy hat & a button up shirt and look like you have money to spend then you will be helped quickly. If you are young, wearing a t-shirt & shorts and have tattoos you will be treated accordingly, regardless of the amount of cash in your wallet. I like your store guys, but you lost a $2,300 sale and a future customer who is incredibly loyal to small business. read more

When I decided to buy my first shot-gun to learn to shoot clay and eventually white-wing, I thought I'd go to a real gun store and have my first purchase be somewhat memorable. This is not to say I don't know about firearms or never been around them, this is just the first time I decided to buy my own. The only memory of the two times I've been to McBride's is the horrible service. I didn't expect much from staff, and I can understand stress if a place is busy, but when its not busy and the staff doesn't even look at you when you want to ask a question or even tries to ask you trick questions when you have a sincere desire to make a purchase just makes them huge jerks. When I went in with a buddy of mine, who knows a lot more about guns than I do, we finally got to talking to a guy after about 15 minutes of just standing there, and when we finally got to talk to him, he would just give one word answers and walk away. I don't know man, that's just rude, even for a firearm store. If you can buy somewhere else: do it. Its just not worth the seldom deals and their crappy staff. read more

Worst FFL transfer experience I've ever had. Two times I've made the mistake of doing an FFL transfer through them, not only do they charge more than the average store but they do not care about your time at all. Took them 72 hours once the firearm was delivered to turn around a simple FFL transfer from when it arrived in the shop. It probably would have been longer but I had to call and remind them to process it several times. The reasoning the clerk gave me is that they have all their people working the floor and in 3 days there was not a second of downtime to spend the 15 minutes required to logging in an FFL transfer. What this says to me is they do not care for your business with FFL transfers and will ignore you as long as they can all while holding your property. Wish they would be more understanding to customers, this has been only place that has treated me this way for FFL transfers. read more

Exactly what I would expect of a small Texas gun store - LOTS of firearms, brash and cocky gun-loving attitudes galore, and not a whole lot of pleasantness. Being from the Northeast, I assumed I wouldn't be incredibly well-received, and yeah, their attitudes left a lot to be desired. That said, the gun store personnel in the Northeast isn't all too friendly either so it may be a required trait for gun store hire. I gave 2 stars because I DID get a good deal on a used handgun I'd been seeking. I'd certainly recommend them based on price (even new guns seemed incredibly reasonable). Basically, get in, speak as little as possible, and get out. They lost 3 stars on pure attitude - I think that says a lot. read more

I have to be honest here; you'd be a fool to purchase a firearm from McBrides. Actually, you'd be a fool if you bought anything from this store. They sell used guns for the price they can be purchased new from many other places (if not more!!!). Academy, for example, has far better pricing on handguns, cleaning supplies, hunting accessories etc. I have no idea why folks even come here. I'm all for supporting a local business, but the dismal service and good ole boy garbage that this place reeks of is something else. It seems they basically rely on the customer being ignorant of the current market to make money. They also will be happy to try to talk you into whatever they are trying to sell you with "half truths" and B.S. "Buyer beware" is always relevant, but this place is ridiculous. In my opinion if course. Perhaps there is that something "special" that I have missed in all of my visits to this store. If so, I guess I've missed out. For a simple purchase though, I would recommend against McBrides. read more

First trip here was typical of most Yelpers - my brother-in-law had cash in hand for a 1911 he knew they had in stock. Took us about 30 minutes of being ignored by the sales people before we left and he bought it elsewhere. I was also in the market for a 12 guage duck gun and took my business to Cabela's. I should note that 'scary' old men at gun stores - which there are plenty of here - don't phase me, so that is not an issue with me. Second trip - I came to McBride's because a native Austinite told me that they have an annual sale on Rio Texas Dove (high brass) loads ($95 a case normally). They were on sale at McBride's for $95 a case. Cabela's regularly stocks these for $95 a case. Shocker, no big sale here. The staff was much friendlier this time, but I went out of my way in the awesome rush hour Lamar traffic to get a case of Rio's and didn't end up seeing any great 'sale'. Needless to say, I won't be going back to pay 'normal' prices when I can take my business to a much friendlier place, with larger inventory (i.e. the big place in Buda that overwhelms most people). Also, Cabela's website is fantastic and they usually have deals on ammo online. I take full advantage of their sales and stock up on cases of shells. read more

I try to give places a few shots (no pun intended here) to really form an opinion. Today was my third visit to McBride's over the past year, and it will be my last. All of my experiences there have been annoying and frustrating. Their selection and prices are not terrible, but what *is* terrible is their attitude and customer non-service. I am no gun nut, but I am not a newbie either. I am trained and experienced in firearms, but I am not at the range every weekend or up on the latest stuff. The store is often busy, and I am cool with waiting a bit. However, you could stand there all day and nobody will ever offer a greeting or ask if you need some help. If you have a question, or heaven-forbid want to buy something, getting the staff's attention is like trying to order a beer at a crowded downtown bar. Everyone has something else to do... except help you out. I do not need the cold, arrogant attitude acting like I am wasting their time by just asking a few questions before making a purchase. On today's visit, I got so fed up with the crap that I just told the guy that I was done dealing with him and I walked out. It is a little further drive, but I will take my business to Heritage Firearms or The Gun Store, where I am not treated like a nuisance. read more

Overpriced products. Under/misinformed sales staff. It would be worth your time researching options on the web, finding a range that rents the model you are interested in, purchasing it on the web (for WAY cheaper than McBrides), and transferring it via an FFL for $25. The tax savings alone offset the FFL charge. The only people who think McBride's is a good LGS are those that have never experienced something different. Give it a shot, you'll be amazed. read more
