I've read most of the negative reviews and laughed. I would not put much stock into them. I found the staff to be super friendly and helpful. My wife and I came to use the range today (and it was our first time) and had a great experience. Very reasonably priced and the staff were super helpful and wonderful. there were many people working on site so I am not sure where the "rude and unhelpful" staff were but none of the people there were anywhere near rude or unhelpful. I think their focus is on safety and as long as you exhibit respect for that you will have a great time. the RSO was super polite and even went ahead and cleaned up my brass for me as I was leaving. They offer the indoor range and it's fine there's a range safety official to keep an eye out for people who've just bought a gun due to the political climate. Sometimes I wonder about the lack of experience in safety that drives those buyers. Don't get me wrong, I believe everyone who wants a gun, and passes the background check should have one, but I'm a bit concerned about the training that they SHOULD get before firing it. Back to the point. They have changed their rules so that you can fire your handgun as fast as you like, the only requirement is that you have to hit the target. I think that's a reasonable requirement, please note the understatement. My only issue is that it will set you back a few dollars. Butif is were cheap, everyone would be doing it, right? Tried to call ahead to make sure I didn't waste my time. Was told the magazine I needed was in stock, told there were 8 of them and the cost. Drove 18 miles just to be told "no, we don't carry that magazine and never did". Guess that's what they do to get you in! Well fellas, I think that's some really low way about trying to get someone in your store. Don't get gift certificates with them we had three for 50 each and they said we couldn't use them at the same time just one at a time wtf. We were in the store for a long time and was looked over and not helped several times, before the hold gift card fiasco. Lets just say my husband walked out mad with out using the cards. I will go back and use them and they will never get another dollar out of us. We have informed the people that buy us gift cards for us one son and our other friends to not spend another dollar. On my first visit, I had shot a handgun once about 10 years ago. So, I was very much a beginner. Wanting to learn again, I came into Red's and rented a few pistols to try out before I made the decision to purchase. After purchasing my handgun, I came here several more times to practice and never once encountered any rude staff members as many have mentioned here. Eventually, my husband and I decided to work towards getting our LTC permit. We had signed up for a 1-1 class with Tony, who taught us a ton and gave us really great advice. Finally, the LTC course instructor and class was great! I was nervous at first, but here were several other women in the class as well. After about 8 hours, I can honestly say that I've learned a great deal about the responsibility of holding the permit, carrying a firearm, and tips on how to defend myself. read more

I have never written a Yelp review, but felt I had to today for Red's. (Long one) Never owned a gun, have never realistically thought of owning one until recently, but something I have put a lot of thought into (and conversations with the wife), haven't shot one in 20 years. But, off to the store and range we go. Wife and walked in, and were greeted quickly by V. We explained that we were noobs, thinking about a small handgun, possibly for concealed carry later down the line, and how nervous my wife was about the whole idea. Then wow - what a great experience! He spent probably 45mins-1 hour talking to us about how to get comfortable just with shooting (starting with a regular handgun vs a compact), showed us 6 or 7 different handguns, differences in each, manufacturers, sight differences, etc, basics of handling one, hand/grip positioning, etc. Funny, helpful, no pressure or making us feel dumb for what we don't (didn't) know, and most importantly, made my wife feel completely at ease. He suggested we might want to rent one and just see how it felt, and thanks to him, my wife agreed. Went to rental counter, very helpful guy there (sorry didn't get your name!) got us going quickly....went with a Walther (PPQ I think) that had felt most comfortable for wifey.... and then spent a good amount of time demonstrating how to load and use it, as well as walking my wife through it hands on several times until she was comfortable (or as much as she could be). Off to the range! Wife went first....loaded and shot 3 rounds, and set the gun down and stepped away. I went up and shot, reloaded and shot again, and then she came back to it. We were both mostly nervous that we might do something wrong, but tried to be as safe as possible when changing positions and had no issues. 50 rounds later, and we were done. The RSO was there, seemed attentive, and never caused us or anyone else we saw any issues, even though we were CLEARLY new to everything (although we also didn't do anything stupid). As we were leaving, V and another gentleman behind the counter called out to us and asked it how it went. Showed him our targets, and they congratulated us for a good showing our first time out. Was actually surprised after coming home, telling my wife we needed to post a review about our experience, and seeing a lot of negative reviews. Honestly, made me think this was a fluke experience and maybe we should look elsewhere, BUT.....that was NOT our experience at all - we will be back. Best way I can end this is, being a frugal shopper, I have looked into a couple of guns we may be interested in, and yes, they can be found online for quite a bit cheaper, but with the experience we had, if/when we decide to purchase, we will be buying at Red's. Good customer service is always expected, but excellent customer service is unusual these days, and that is what we got today. read more

I have been here at least a half dozen times, bought several firearms from, and ammunition. I have also frequented their range and never had an issue until today. I, an experienced veteran, was accused of (in the RSO's words) "racking my slide and then pointing my sidearm at my (also veteran) friend. While in reality I was locking the slide of my empty side arm to the rear, with the muzzle in a controlled and safe direction (never flagging anyone)to apply lubricant prior to placing the safe weapon down for further use... Someone should retrain the incompetent "Range Safety Officer", who obviously did not see what was going on because he was to busy sweeping up brass - because you know a RSO can both clean and watch for safety violations at the same time. The fact that he has this title is laughable. Thanks RED's for allowing your poorly trained employee for costing you 2 customers today. read more

Traveling thru Austin, and stopped in to do some shooting with my .44. A clean welk run family friendly gun range. The stock and equipment was vast. Their staff in the shooting area lack of professionalism, need some serious training. Somehow they assume everyone knows everything. When we needed help, the staff on site was completely ignoring us. The guy at the front didn't even give us the bullets I ordered. How are we supposed to know where to get the bullets? You are supposed to help the customers. Your salary is paid by the customers! They purposefully allocated a slot next to someone who was firing shotguns even though there were plenty of slots next to us. It was very very loud. . Monday is supposed to ladies' half price, but they still went ahead and charged us full price. Will never come back. Will NOT recommend this place to anyone, especially if you are asians. read more

I'm glad the AC works now so that made this pretty bearable. The gentleman who helped my gf learn the basics of her firearm was awesome. What people don't appreciate is having an employee tell you a box of ammo is $10 and then when your leaving they change the price to $37. The manager comes over and makes it seem like it was my fault for not knowing how expensive ammo is. I asked the employee behind the rental counter to admit to his boss he told me it was $10 and he failed to do it but thankfully there was a few people around him that are not scammers. The manager then made me feel like it was my fault which is just a horrible thing to do to a customer in my point of view. Shame on this staff for trying to get every dollar out of people. May 2019: Red's doesn't allow shotguns unless firing slug ammo. That was disappointing, but somewhat understandable since their lanes are very narrow. I picked up five boxes of premium slug rounds from them on the spot so I'd at least get to fire and wouldn't waste a long trip. The shelf provided makes firing from just above chest level impossible, which is fine for pistol, but using your body to fire from chest level is the recommended stance in the instruction manual of the Remington TAC 14/Mossberg Shockwave, so already I'm firing the weapon much higher than the manufacturer recommends. The nanosecond I fire, the diva one lane over says he's been pelted by my shot (nevermind it's slug) and tells me to get my shotgun out of there, shotguns don't belong at Red's. I look to the range safety officer for assistance, but RSO who wasn't paying much attention, says I should try to cheek the pistol grip shotgun. Since I'm not about to have an argument with a man holding a loaded gun, I just pack up and leave. You might have a better time at Red's than I did, but for $70, I was out the door in less than 20 minutes after arriving, really wishing I'd have gone to an outdoor range instead. read more

I read through all the negative comments below and they're all from people who are mad that you can't do whatever you want, whenever you want. Red's prides themselves on safety, education, and having a good time (in that order). Being empathic to the staff, they're held liable every day to keep everyone alive and safe - so yeah there's going to be negative comments below about how rude the staff is, when in reality the customers don't realize how they put someone else at risk. While keeping people safe, theyll give you the patience to teach you how to shoot and beginner mechanics about guns. I have nothing but respect for the staff and enjoyed going through the full day LTC class with Tony. The LTC class is naturally dry, but he makes sure you have some fun during it - highly recommend for anyone looking to become educated. To sum it up, if you're looking for a good time and have fair price, I 100% recommend Red's. Don't read much into the negative comments below. The guys there were all very friendly and didn't make me feel stupid or bad for not knowing anything about guns or shooting. North Austin's leading indoor shooting range offers plenty of opportunities to offset accidents, as they tend to occur more often than we like to think. Red's has firearm classes including the NRA's FIRST [Firearm Instruction, Responsibility and Safety Training], marksmanship instruction, and concealed handgun license classes. I did not take the firearm instruction class, but I went with a few seasoned shooters who instructed me in shooting range protocol with their own firearms before entering the facility. The class is offered the first Saturday of the month at the Oakhill south location, with classes limited to six. Too many hands in the kitchen. Wait... Red's also has Ladies Night. No no, we don't get in for free with some eyelash batting or sashaying, but we do get a half-off discount for hourly rates: $7.00/hr instead of $14.00/hr. Cute rate. And cute moose headmount. So, I'd advise most people to take a safety class first, to at least understand the gravity of wielding a locked and loaded pistola. To conclude: 'Do you understand? Y-y-yes. So say it. I understand. Hmm....I will agree with the others here that the staff was not that great so it made the experience a bit awkward. We followed the rules but the guy in the room kept yelling at us and others. The sink to wash your hands was covered in junk so you had to use the restrooms. As I went to go into the washroom a dude comes out of the lady's bathroom. Ok...gross. Then I heard employees making fun of my friend for waiting for the men's bathroom saying they were both bathrooms so who cares which he uses? Then why were they labeled as gendered bathrooms? I'm baffled after reading the previous negative reviews of Red's Indoor Range. My experience here was completely the opposite. The salesperson saw me eyeing some items and immediately asked if he could help. He showed me the item I was interested in, then upon my request, gave me suggestions for similar products by other brands as well as his opinion on why he would choose one over the other. The range people were also helpful and friendly. I read the range rules and commented that these all sound like common sense, to which they agreed but gave many examples of people breaking them. I do appreciate that they take safety as their top priority, and if most of the negative reviews about the range portion of this facility are from people who didn't follow the rules, then that is very concerning. read more

I was incredibly nervous about shooting a REAL gun with REAL ammo for the first time, but the guys at Red's made me feel right at home. When I say incredibly nervous, I mean I was sweating bullets. No pun intended. I was fogging up my safety glasses and turning white. Woooo...I'm hardcore. But the guy behind the counter helped me select a gun that was easy to load with just the right amount of kick and answered EVERY single question I had. I had a lot of questions. We were given a safety lesson and then...all of a sudden...I was shooting a gun. It took me a while to get used to it, but after shooting three or four clips, it began to feel natural. Most people in Austin that own guns have heard of Red's and all of them tell me it's the best place to go for indoor shooting. Try it. read more

Don't go... I''m a military member and have been going to multiple gun ranges in both San Antonio and Austin as well as Army gun ranges and this is definitely not a place that one should go to. While they pretended to be nice and helpful, they are anything but. The guy behind the counter started to give me instructions on how to hold a gun because I told him wasn't making any purchases today?? Walking into the range, I was taking out my guns and the gun "safety-officer" was definitely on a power trip with whatever little power he has over people at the gun range. He told me that I was unsafe taking out my guns from my backpack and told me to leave for the day. I was taking out my guns to put on the counter, was not waving at anybody but apparently, he thought he knew better. Perhaps he felt he wasn't going to make any money off me renting guns or buying bullets from them. Although I have been here previously, this shall be the last time I visit this place. I scheduled a lesson here after shooting for the first time. Thought better of it and cancelled later due to a general bad safety vibe. I decided it would be better to go elsewhere, where they take gun safety a little more seriously. Some of the things people were doing with guns in the shooting range were seriously stupid. Anyway, I called to ask for a refund 3 days ago. They told me to wait for it to post and call back. Been 3 days. Still nothing, and they are not answering the phone. I'm not going back in due to how uncomfortable that place makes me. Guess I'll just have to keep calling. Edit- they sent me a check in the mail. Apparently no one was answering the phone because the whole staff got COVID and they had to close.
