LOVE this place. Fish & Chips, Burgers on Sourdough with onion rings, the ususal faves. Grabbing these along with a pitcher to sit out by the water is what it's all about. But... should it have been so repugnant? a) the trashcan was absolutely filthy. b) the tables & everything on them were filthy. I can't keep track of the number of times I've passed Red's Java House on the way to a Giants game or on my way to piers 30-32 for an event (KFOG Kaboom) and never gave it a second look or have gone in. It wasn't until watching Anthony Bourdain on his SF trip stop here for a burger and a beer that I decided that I needed to check this place out next time I'm in the area and looking for a bite to eat. Me and four of my friends decided to stop here for a bite before the SF Giants vs Rockies game so we didn't have to pay for the pricey food and drink inside the stadium. After reading the numerous poor reviews on their burger, and the positive reviews from those who had Red's fish and chips, I then decided to play it safe and go for the fish and chips ($8.50) and a bottle of Anchor Steam (about $5) We grabbed a table outside with the seagulls and enjoyed the view of the bay and the parking lot next to us.Three of us had the fish and chips and the other two the burgers. Those who had the burgers weren't that impressed..."how was the burger?" "Meh, I've had better" "It's ok" The fish and chips were alright, I've had better, but it was nothing to complain about. The plastic forks they give you are practically useless on the fried batter on the fish and only good once you crack open the fish with your hands. They give you a couple decent sized pieces of fish on a bed of french fries and with a side of tarter sauce and malt vinegar on the side. After finishing our fish and chips and burgers, we decided to get one more beer before heading into the game and we got a pitcher of Anchor Steam ($16), ($14 during happy hour - wish I could tell you when that was) They were cleaning up getting ready to close when we headed out (around 7:20pm) so it's not a late night place, but an ok place to go if you need a quick bite before the game and don't have the time for a sit down full service restaurant. read more

Upon our hotel concierge's suggestion, my beau and I ate a late breakfast at Red's Java House before the Giants game. We walked along Embarcadero for what seemed like forever until we reached this famous quaint shack on the water. According to a message on the menu, breakfast ends at 11; while the long line crept forward, my heart pounded like a flimsy pancake. "I do NOT want to eat a cheeseburger," I informed my boyfriend, as a greasy meal would not sit well with me. At 11:03, we reached the counter. "You still serving breakfast?" he inquired, knowing the answer would set the mood for the morning. "Maybe," the staff member smiled. "Good, that'll make her day," my beau sighed with relief, glancing toward me. We later learned Red's serves breakfast until 2 on the weekends. We both opted for the Pancake, Bacon and Egg Plate, a huge and cheap helping. A convoluted pile of sweet, crisp bacon made a mound at one edge of the plate, a mountain of scrambled eggs balancing it out on the other. The pizza-sized pancake came with plastic containers of butter and syrup, oozing into the eggs and bacon. The food was nothing special, although the pigeons would've been glad for a bite. A sign in the bar even warns patrons of the birds' aggression. As lunchtime approached, Giants fans flooded the back patio that overlooks the water. Clearly, the game day patronage and indoor decorations make up for what the food lacks. Historic city collages appear beneath the plastic table tops; red stools line those indoor tables. A Giants baseball bat hangs over the entryway leading from the eating area to a photography-lined hall to the bar. My simple breakfast and people-watching at Red's got me pumped for an afternoon at AT&T Park. read more

What can I say about Reds- it's a great place to meet, greet, chill, drink, DRINK- morning, noon and night (they do close early, that may be my major complaint). Go for some of the food, go for the beer, the bloodies on a weekend morning, the view, the lack of posers often found at other spots, the outstanding people watching - I've even witnessed Dept. of Water workers sling back beers on their lunchbreaks and drive right off the lot... The location of this local and fun dive bar is amazing! A lot of people stop by here for a couple of drinks before a Giants game, but I just wanted to enjoy the warm spring weather that SF rarely has. We sat outside to enjoy the bay views and catch some sunlight while taking down a couple of beers. The bartender was very friendly and the people sitting next to us were raving about the food they were eating (we only had drinks there). The food did look quite awesome - big servings with wonderful smells. I want to come back here on a warm summer day to drink, take in the sun, and eat their food! Respect to this 80+ year old San Francisco institution but the burgers are horrible. I have no qualms about giving this filthy dive one star but I'll bump it up to two just to be nice. The cheese isn't melted and the meat smells and taste funny. Just because something is old doesn't make it good. I come for the food not the ghost of decades past. It is very inexpensive and you can't beat their burgers for the price. If you're looking for a spot the locals come this might be it. One of my favorite places in the city. Doesn't hurt that its halfway between my office and the ballpark, but that's only the tip of the iceberg. Despite its small external appearance, there is plenty of outdoor seating right on the water and a good amount inside too. The best bet in the bar in the back is the bucket of PBRs or Rolling Rocks (6 for 12 bucks). Closing time says 5 PM but on gamedays that seems flexible Inside I've got nothing but nice things to say about the burgers. I usually go for the double cheeseburger. Talk About History There's pictures all around the place of historical San Francisco. It's amazing to see how different the city was years ago yet still see Red's Java House there. Weekly trivia questions make it a fun place to visit. My main reason for going here are the breakfast sandwiches. I'm not a huge fan of their lunch but I still go there once in a while. Such a great place for breakfast and lunch!!! I pass this place all the time and never gave it a second thought. But my husband wanted to try it while on one of our bike rides and I am so glad he did! I had the breakfast and it was just everything you would ever want from a breakfast, the bacon was hot and juicy, the pancakes were hot and cakey and the eggs were cooked to perfection. And then the view is just beautiful! On a warm day, sitting outside would be ideal, but the warm atmosphere inside is great too...so cozy. Even after reading many mixed reviews, we just had to try this place. We are Anthony Bourdain fan! Heck, we can we could at least enjoy the view! When we got there, tons of free parking mad me happy! finding parking spot & walking around is not so fun anymore with our 17 month old who wants to walk by herself & always walks to opposite direction from where we are headed. We parked & hung out there with my baby watching the ducks in the water until our friends get there. Spectacular view as we expected. Super! As we walked into the restaurant through the bar area, we were even more thrilled to order some food. It just felt like we were back in east coast! Home sweet home~ The guys are so nice & cool! We love this place! We ordered onion rings chili fries & burgers for guys. Onion ring came hot so fast, really hot! It was soooo good. Maybe very greasy but what do I expect from fried food? not to be greasy? I didn't try the burger but guys said, it's so-so. They said, if they make burger so well, this place would be so crowded that we would not be able to eat here. Lucky for us! This shack on the Embarcadero isn't fancy, but it is a terrific experience. You can come here for a great breakfast (albeit a very limited menu) and sit outside with a view of the Bay Bridge. Or you can visit for the small but full-service bar in the tent behind the small restaurant. We've been impressed with the food. Nothing fancy, but it's well made and fresh. Cool place for a juicy, fattening burger and a cold beer. Pretty much food that will feed anyone who is hungry... or big beefy guys that I saw sitting all around me (construction workers in this case). I don't know if it was really worth it to pay 11 bucks for the double cheeseburger with fries and beer combo, but I did come to the conclusion that I probably ordered a burger too big for me. It was really good though. Although if you are scared of condiments like I am, you might want to tell them to not put any mustard on the burger (they put this on it automatically, as well as onions and a pickle). Fun place to stop for beers, burgers and fries after work (or before a game). Super casual environment, great location by the water on Embarcadero. Huge outside seating area with long tables and umbrellas. It's conveniently located by a ton of great businesses and homes, so naturally, it gets busy after 5PM. Be prepared to either get there early, or fight someone for a place to sit. Yummy, all american menu. Cheese burgers were great, and served exactly as they should be - simple. Went in on a nice sunny day the guy upfront was supper supper nice!!!! I ordered double cheese burger combo (burger/fries/drink) 15$ the food looks delicious the bread is fresh and the meat is well cooked. My only issue was the fact when I walked in there is a bunch of flys !!! I don't want to eat at a place with flys everywhere! Have a "few" $1.50 PBRs and stagger out to the end of the pier. the food is greasy and the chilly will burn a hold in your stomach, but at lest the prices will not torch a hold in your wallet. went there for breakfast before the giants fanfest. nothing bad to say about this place. the service, the food, and the location rocks. breakfast until 11am first the food: the boyfriend had corn beef hash with potatoes, eggs, and toast. my only experience with corn beef is from a can so i didn't realize how good actual corn beef is. he said the same thing. i didn't think the food was too greasy. you kind of expect some grease when it comes to breakfast/diner type food. i had the egg, bacon, and cheese sandwich on sourdough. again... not overly greasy, good portion, and done just right. the egg was done like an omelet which sat nicely between the bread. the bacon was crispy and the cheese not overwhelming. the people there are mellow, friendly, and seem to enjoy working there. they were cool that we had our own coffee so that was nice. the prices are good for the quality of food. you can be seated upfront or towards the back. nice view of the water since you're on the pier and a semi short walk to the ballpark. read more

Came here with my boyfriend on a Sunday to grab a quick bite to eat. We shared the corned beef breakfast sandwich. Overall it was yummy, but had a few too many potatoes and not enough corned beef! Next time, I'll also ask for just egg whites. My boyfriend tried the coffee which he said was not good, and ended up tossing it after a few sips. A few negatives are the tables are sticky (could use a good wipe down but it's expected at a dive-y place like this) and there are a lot of flies out back near the bar. The only thing I love about Red's is the charming hut look and feel and the waterfront seating which is perfect on a sunny day. Beware of the seagulls eyeing your food though. I don't love the food options here since everything is fried. Okay, fried is awesome for most people but I can't always gorge here. I had the tuna sandwich once and it was completely my fault that I ordered that. The second time I ordered a cheeseburger but it came on sourdough bread with no fries. Maybe I'm used to my burgers being on hamburger buns and really juicy. If you're into dive places, come here. But if you're a foodie like me, you might be a tad disappointed.
