Moshi Moshi is a 38 years old legacy sushi place in Dogpatch SF. We tried a bunch of stuff and some were hits, some misses. - Bacon wrapped mochi: We started with this. Honestly didn't like it. Just fat and greasy, felt a bit heavy to start the meal. - Hamachi Bomb: Best dish of the night. There were 2 pieces only, but flavorful. The hamachi was wrapped around rice with yuzu. - Rainbow Spider roll: A special, monster size roll. It's got tempura soft shell crab, avocado, and cucumber then topped with a ton of sashimi and unagi sauce. Super filling. - Red Dragon roll: Solid if you like spicy tuna and salmon. A bit sour idk why - Haleakala Maki: My 2nd favorite. Albacore poke with the ogo seaweed and red clay salt had such a unique flavor, then top with torched albacore and spicy garlic oil. Finally tried this Japanese restaurant I've been meaning to try now for a while, as I always pass by this cute restaurant on the way to work. I eyed their Bento Box, in which I chose the Chicken Teriyaki, and the Tempura for my items. It comes with a salad, and a scoop of rice. All that for $20. My food came very hot! I was so pleased! My tempura was particularly great, with a thinner batter, and crispy and hot. I also got the chicken teriyaki, which was chicken breast grilled, and quite good, just a little more on the heavier grilled side. Still juicy though. Portions were a little small here, but overall I loved the food. I will have to come back for another Bento box someday, or bring my family here after work. It's a cute and cozy little restaurant, modern inside, different from how I envisioned in a good way! For some reason not exactly what I was expecting from what I saw on the outside. Came at opening on a Monday. Second party to be sat but the restaurant filled up quite quickly within an hour. Casual local eatery. - edamame - cooked well but topped with large flakey salt that was too overpowering - rolls - ordered 5 different rolls. Overall, the rolls were quite solid and a definitely satisfied the sushi craving. A lot of them can be quite foo foo though, with lots of sauce, toppings, etc, but that's all part of the fun. Wasn't planning to experience sashimi/nigiri during this visit. One thing I did notice was that the rice was a bit too wet/mushy. It was all clumped together on the roll so I couldn't experience each individual grain. Staff was friendly. Overall attentive but there appeared to be a call out so they were scrambling. Came here on a Friday night to get sushi with a friend before going out! I had been here once before with friends, and it's safe to say that this is a good place to go if you're craving fresh, unique sushi and/or drinks! The servers were also great, providing us with recommendations and water as well as warning about the size of the Rainbow Spider roll we got (spoiler: it was quite large). The ambiance is nice and cozy! I like the various decor around the restaurant as well as in the bathroom! Definitely a unique pksce! My friend and I got the Rainbow Spider and salmon avocado rolls ; in addition, we also each got a miso soup (8 oz). I also got the hibiscus ginger margarita and my friend got the chilled vodka martini. The rolls were absolutely delicious, and I love how the rainbow spider is a slightly bigger roll in size to fit the soft shell crab side! The fish was so so so fresh and tasty as well! The miso soup was definitely on the saltier side, but still good nonetheless! The drinks are also pretty strong, but have great taste as well! Wonderful dog patch sushi spot. Great variety on the menu. Eryngii tempura were an excellent appetizer. Sake Bomb and Uni were also great choices. I went here with a group of around 10 people and we had plenty of space and a great time. I loved the ambiance inside of Moshi Moshi! The staff were very attentive. The squash tempura was also delicious, light, and crispy without feeling heavy. I do wish the rolls overall were a bit better. We tried the Carmel roll with shrimp tempura, and it didn't really impress me compared to the other dishes. The food here was okay but not too spectacular. Though they serve Japanese food, there feels like a lot of American influence and so I don't think it's very authentic. We stopped by at this cozy Japanese eatery for dinner on a Saturday night with no reservation. The restaurant is fairly small and was pretty packed but we were able to get seated within 5 minutes. We decided on the Tokyo Karaage, Chicken Katsu Dinner, and the Akasaka nights sushi roll to share. The karaage was reminiscent of a McDonald's chicken nugget more so than traditional karaage, but was still delicious nonetheless. I also quite liked the ginger-soy sauce. The Akasaka nights roll is one of their signature items and was pretty solid overall. The fillings went well together and the fish was decently fresh but not particularly high quality. The chicken katsu dinner took longer to come out and I have to say I was a bit disappointed. The chicken was pretty dry and didn't have much flavor on its own, so I had to drench it in the sauce. The accompanying miso soup and salad were good though. The karaage was definitely the superior chicken dish of the two, and would recommend opting for the dinner version of that instead. Pretty decent spot to grab a meal if you happen to be in area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. read more

We've passed by this place dozens of times and finally stopped by to try it out. Apparently it's been open for decades, but the space is modern and cozy. The food was delicious. We couldn't help but order lots of specials - they looked so good! Very disappointing experience across the board. - Service: We saw the waiter 3 times, once to ask us if we wanted water (quite delayed - this was ~10 min after being seated), once to take our order, and once to give us the bill. And, he never once asked how the food was, even when bringing the bill. - Food: Overall, the fish and rice were of poor quality. The fish was oddly mushy and lacking bite, and the rice was overcooked. In addition, we found two fish bones in the poke mix that was in one of the rolls. The waiter brought a comped mochi ice cream, but I would expect the manager / chef to come out to us + offer more meaningful or a least a choice of dessert. A very poor experience, especially given the price point of the restaurant. - Atmosphere: Not horrendous but could use a more thorough cleaning, especially in the window seats where we sat. read more

Low three stars. Service was pretty off, food was good. We asked for a hot water and tea and for me and my partner, they brought out four cups. Then the server said he was getting our regular water, which we said we don't need, and then he still brought a pitcher of regular water with two more cups. So here we are at a tiny two top, two people and six cups. When we asked for a refill of both the hot water and the tea, we only got the hot water refilled. Our first dish came out, the asparagus, and then we realize we didn't have utensils. We had to go ask them for that. One of the rolls we ordered was the honey moon. But when we got our bill the half moon was still listed, they did then remove it when I mentioned it. We came across this place before going to a show in the nearby stadium. We had no idea what to expect. Wow. They deserve 5/5 stars. Their rolls were amazing. The drinks were amazing. They gave us truly a great experience. I would give Moshi Moshi 3.5 stars - the food is not bad but it's not particularly good and I find the portions of the sushi small for the price. We ordered: - Shishito Peppers ($9) - The tempura is really great - it's light, crispy and perfectly salted. Be forewarned though: it truly is a game of pepper roulette! Spicy salmon: spice level concerning tingle to brief burn to 'oh that wasn't so bad' on the White Guy Scale. That's a lot of fish crammed in there for only $10. Ooh, is my tongue still burning? Oh no, the alcohol makes it worse. Futo krispy: That first bite had me worried, very tempura heavy. Subsequent bites, the middle of the role, had a clean balance of the ingredients. Wonderful cocktail menu with many choices on non-alcoholic cocktails (that can be spiked if asked). We elected to have mostly alcoholic beverages and all were tasty. The servers were all great in providing suggestions. We had bacon-wrapped mochi (so yum we re-ordered them), fresh made gyoza, several sushi rolls , grilled asparagus, fried calamari with fried string beans, fried raw-salmon appetizer. The restaurant had quite a bit of seating available on a weekday evening. The food was really good! I loved their take on the cosmopolitan but it is limited because they freeze the cranberry pomegranate juice. Parking was limited but it's close to a MUNI station. I have to say, I don't concur with the reviews of Moshi Moshi. Service, while friendly, was extremely slow. I came in on a weeknight, sat at the bar, waited almost 10 minutes to be acknowledged, was never given a menu or QR code to scan, and the place was only about 30% full. Bartender was friendly when he did come over, so I'm not docking them on this review it was mainly about the food. I ordered a roll, which took close to 20 minutes to arrive, and when it did lackluster is the best way I could describe it. Dry rice and tasted like it had been made a day (at least) before. Flavor profile was almost non existent, just a lump of bland rice and dry crab. Perhaps I caught them on an off night, but given the other Yelp reviews (which 100% influenced my decision to come in) I don't think I'll be returning. read more
