On the way to the ATT Ballpark, there is Reds Java House, an institution dive bar where we consistently return to have a drink and a burger. The prices are definitely cheaper than inside the ballpark! It has been around forever - food is OK actually just normal pub food and drinks are what they are....served in plastic glasses. The real attraction here is sitting on the pier and looking out at the water and seeing all of the fans go by. Great little place! read more

Dayum Yelp is good: as I prepared to write this on Red's page, I was faced with a prominently-displayed banner ad for Weight Watchers. God bless Red's! Yes, people, it's a greasy spoon so don't expect "more" but do expect VERY tasty burgers on sourdough for under $5 with a fantastic view, friendly service, and SF history displayed throughout the place. It feels like home all 'round. And while I always fear goiter when I can't get a little greens with my meat (it's true, that policy bit about "no lettuce or tomato served with the burgers"), I also know I have other ways to make that up throughout the day (my medium rare double burger was sooooo good I didn't blink when I transitioned from Patty 1 to Patty 2). So just be clear that the Red's part of your day is for animal protein, pure & simple (purists who argue beer doesn't fit that category have bigger issues to grapple). This restaurant looks like a little shack on the side of the pier but it's a hidden gem! I don't think they have the private lot anymore, unless it was just closed off because of the construction and America's cup that is going on. My boyfriend and I had a double cheeseburger meal and their daily special which was the corned beef hash burger. The double cheeseburger consists of two patties, cheese, onions, pickles, and mustard on a roll. The corned beef hash was the same except without cheese. I definitely enjoyed the corned beef hash more than the burger itself. They warn you that the burgers don't come with lettuce and tomatoes, which is probably why I wasn't super excited about the burger. The corned beef hash was really tender and definitely really filling! My boyfriend shared both burgers but only finished half of the corned beef hash burger. I came here for a late afternoon lunch this past weekend. They had just opened their patio area. Although it is a good spot to grab a drink with a friend, the food here is terrible and overpriced. We got a double cheese burger meal and the burger tasted like it was just bread and lots of mustard. It was definitely not worth it for a $16 burger. They do have a nice small bar in the back and the prices for the drinks looked reasonable but I would not come here for the food. Also I was concerned about them following the city guidelines regarding COVID because the place was pretty unsanitary and the tables were dirty. I've lived in San Francisco my entire life. I passed Red's a hundred times but one day I was driving pSt it on The Embarcadero. It was about noon, I was hungry and I spotted a parking place. This is my chance, I thought, to try an old time place. It must be great since it's been here ever since the old State Belt Railway ran down the middle of The Embarcadero. It was, at best, mediocre. It looks like they are putting our *drinks dollars* to work as I see they have made some upgrades since last Giants season. I'll get this place to start because of its location. I stopped off with a friend for late breakfast or early lunch on the way to the ballpark. The service was horribly slow and we waited for food forever. Numerous people were being served their food who were behind us in line. I have no idea how long our food just sat at the counter before I finally went up and was able to get someone's attention to retrieve it for us. Nice outside seating in the back with a legendary view of the Bay Bridge. Came here on a random mid Sat afternoon, when I thought it would be packed, but surprisingly was kind of empty. I asked the woman at the register what was a must try, she said they're known for their cheeseburgers and fish and chips. Of course, I was obliged to try and share both. Red's is an institution here in San Francisco. They've been slinging burgers to weary longshoremen since before Calvin Coolidge became the 30th President of the United States of America, and they've been fryin' up fish sticks to the masses along the Embarcadero since before Roy and Walt Disney formed The Walt Disney Company. With that being said, there are a few generations of families that don't know San Francisco without Red's, and for that, I have to tip my hat. Being on Anthony Bourdain's 'No Reservations' could prove to be one of the worst things that's ever happened to this place. OR, it could be the best. I suppose only time will tell. But what I've noticed since Tony profiled the joint is an increase in patrons and an overrated idea of what's to be expected. It's essentially a fast food joint on the water, and I can't help but believe people are expecting to sink their teeth into the greatest burger in history. That's the double-edged sword in this kind of publicity, as it was a tad misrepresented, as far as I'm concerned. This place is an anomaly. If you scan the horizon around the water's edge, you'll notice high rises, yuppies jogging with their iPods, AT&T park, expensive looking condos, the Bay Bridge... and Red's. It sticks out like a sore thumb, it's beat up and sagging like an abandoned spider web... but that's the appeal more so than the food. It's the sole survivor in a sea of gentrification, and it's nice to support such an operation that's been grinding away or nearly 80 years without so much as a face lift along the way. If you're a Giants fan, you'll have to wait until 2010, but this is one of the best pre-game spots in the area. PBRs are $1.75 and their other beer specials are smokin' as well. Head in an hour before the game, grab a bucket of Milwaukee's finest on the back patio, and get a serious buzz going for the same scratch you'd drop on one Bud Light inside AT&T Park. read more

He was an organizer for the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) -- and a bit of a local celeb back in his day. And he's up there on the wall with Tony Bourdain and all the famous people, because Red's is one of the few places left that still honors our waterfront's working past. Too many of us have forgotten the men who sweated and toiled before those giant cranes across the bay took over the job. Red's hasn't. Those fellas were their customers. That's the thing: Red's isn't trying to entice tourists, it isn't trying to be kitsch. It's a longshoremen's lunch counter. Thassit. You don't want to eat and drink like a longshoreman? Feel free to take your ascot to one of the 319 other establishments on todays' waterfront -- and enjoy your appletini. Heck, I do that sometimes myself. But that's not Red's. At Red's, it's all about fish and chips and beer. This is a place where working men used to let off steam -- and still do. Not all of them are manual laborers anymore, not all of them are even men anymore. I have never ordered a coffee at Reds Java House. Why bother. They serve beer. Reds is a reminder of what South Beach was before the Giants moved in along with all of the high rise condos and people who can afford them. The outside is a little worn down, weathered and small compared to its new neighbors. It is still somewhere the working class would be comfortable, sitting outside on haphazardly placed plastic tables and chairs watching the scenery with a burger and a beer, after a hard days work. The inside is no more glamorous. You order your diner/deli foods at a counter and grab a bottle of beer out of a sliding door refrigerator case. The walls are adorned with decorative knick knacks that are all at least a few decades old. I hope Reds never goes away and never changes, but I assume it is inevitable. I've passed by Red's Java House on my way to AT&T Park countless times and yet somehow never found the time to stop in. Luckily, I was finally able to last month on Opening Day. My mom and I got to Red's fairly early for breakfast. By 11 a.m., it was packed to the brim with people so be sure to get here early if you want to eat breakfast comfortably and not in a rush. We both ordered the pancakes plate ($9.75) which came with scrambled eggs, bacon, and a large pancake. Red's gives some generous portions and we were full until late in the afternoon. The food here is your standard breakfast fare but it still feels like a good, home-cooked meal. With great views of the Bay, Red's is definitely one of those places where you "stop and smell the roses." As a San Francisco native, I love places that give me a truly, local vibe and Red's offers just that. read more

So cut to a couple of months later and I'm wandering down the waterfront one morning with my date from the night before, who has promised to feed me, when I see the same shack. I never went to Red's because of Bourdain. I used to go to Red's because it's the cheapest place for breakfast at 5:30 in the morning. Breakfast specialty was short stack of pancakes in collision mat style. Never tried the hamburger. From what others say about it, just as well. As I left Red's one morning two dudes got out of a taxi; one of them had a Rollei on a strap around his neck. He clicked it once and went inside. Next time I went back to Red's, they had a supply of grey sweatshirts with a b/w picture of me in front of the restaurant and the Bay Bridge arching over. Of course I wore my beard, trenchcoat and wide brimmed hat -- very film noir. But the price of the sweatshirt was out of my reach. So, how about a free breakfast? No. Well, then how about an extra collision mat on the house? No. I have not been back to Red's. read more

Accidentally ate here because my co-worker called Red's Java House instead of Java House for a pick up order. So we walked a bit further to Red's Java House and upon entering, we had to dodge flies like Kung Fu masters. We unwrapped our burgers to take a bite and... my coworker looked really depressed. I tried to make the best of it and enjoy the bacon and excess of pickles. The bread was hard, the meat very dry and there was only onions and pickles inside. She asked how can you be eating that? I said I'm trying to make the best of it and just eat the bacon and pickles....really a McDonald's cheeseburger is better than this which is sad to say. I tried to keep a positive attitude, but on the way walking back to work, we passed Java House. Not Red's Java House, just Java House, the one closer to ATT Park. My coworker was really depressed about the crappy burger that she paid for as a treat because usually she doesn't spend money eating out and today was happy cheeseburger day. She said she was gonna ask Java House for some lettuce and tomatoes and a real bun at least and that we would pay them. She explained our situation to the cooks there and they were accommodating even though they didn't have to. Not sure why Red's Java House said they threw our pre-order burgers away, maybe the flies flew away with them or they were never made in the first place. I would rather bring a George Foreman Grill to work and make my own burger before EVER ordering from here again. Be careful when ordering over the phone, there is a Red's Java House and a Java House. Pick the one with the blue paint without the flies. Or if you want, I'll have my George Foreman Grill ready and will make juicy fresh hamburgers for you rather than some hard dried up meat that even your stomach knows isn't a real burger!
