First time back since pandemic, happy to see they're back. Was a bit surprised about decor and "Bitter Truth" and all, but I get it. We were celebrating birthdays and 2 of our party hadn't been there ever. What a FANTASTIC introduction!! The food was outstanding, service was exceptional and we are already excited to go back. We were always spoiled by their smoked wings, won't order wings anywhere else....FANTASTIC! Cobb salad is extraordinary, generous and the presentation is amazing! Peppadew Mac n cheese is still sooooooo good. The peppadew cheese on everything ordered was a wonderful addition. However, the brussels sprouts were clearly overcooked, probably should've sent them back, but that's something easily worked out and not enough to keep us away. Some had brisket, pulled pork, beet salad, all all received rave reviews. As for decor......I miss the wood, heavy edged bar but i get the change and the quartz is GORGEOUS. Bar chairs are lovely, the sofas are great for hanging out but too low for eating at the table. The serious decor demerit is the spherical lighting over the bar.......with all the upgrades, elegant ambience, the spheres look cheap. I'm sure they weren't but maybe something more akin to the table lamps (gold/ black)? I miss the historical brick walls, but the black and brick work. Would have enjoyed perhaps LARGE Art Deco prints? All just a matter of taste and taste is why we'd go there! Red Rock should be promoted everywhere, there's just not enough GREAT to say. SO HAPPY to return and will certainly spread the word about them!!!! read more

It's been many years, and things have changed. While the staff remains consistently good, as do the meat-based offerings, it's unfortunate that ownership has decided to fry everything in beef tallow. This means that vegetarian and vegan guests can't even have fries and Brussel sprouts. On the upside, if you don't care about that sort of thing, they do have a good happy hour, and overall prices remain relatively low. read more

I made a reservation for one of their outdoor igloos on OpenTable on Friday afternoon. It was a long shot to get a reservation but geeked there was availability. We arrived at 630p and were guided through the dining room to an outdoor garden of little greenhouses. The one we had sat 4. We were 3 so had plenty of space, even for being tall people. Each hut had a heater but still dress warmly. The heaters couldn't keep up with warming each time the door was opened. It was comfortable enough though. We ordered a bottle of wine and round of appetizers. Then dinner and another bottle. I don't know if there is a time limit on the igloos but we were a little over 2 hrs. The kitchen was busy so food items took a little bit, but glad to have the wine. Service was great. We never wondered when we'd get another visit. She broke out our checks appropriately and pointed out that we pay in the app via QR code on the bills. Super easy and we were out. All and all is was well managed, and fantastic food. read more

This place is amazing. I was in Ypsi for the night for my final exam and came here for dinner after a long day of work and driving across town to get here. I wanted a sturdy meal, and this was only a mile and a half from my hotel. So, I came here with a friend and we went all out with our food. We started with the garbage fries since they seem to be well liked, and we were absolutely in love with them. We split the dish and couldn't stop eating! After we reviewed the menu, we also ordered some booze, which was pretty good as well. It went down a little to well, but we both needed it with bad nerves and all. I ate the Brisket sandwich and it was absolutely tasty. The portion was huge, and even with a bottomless appetite I still wasn't able to finish it. Sadly, the sandwiches don't come with any sort of side, but after the garbage fries, we really didn't need any. I tried most of the barbeque sauces, and I stuck with the house sauce, which was pretty good. I also tried the sweet and hot, but I wasn't a huge fan. We had about 4 sauces at our table. Two were South Carolina blends, the sweet and spicy and of course the house sauce. They definitely made the meal better. The prices here are spot on for what you get. The place is decorated well, and don't try so hard. What I mean by that is no blaring music, nothing was over done and it was a very nice atmosphere. Our server was super nice and checked in on us often and frequently, which we liked. Beverages were filled and food, orders and booze were taken promptly. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised at how good this place was. Not that I ever doubted it, but dang, what a great place. So I'm in the town where I grew up on business for a week and I wanted to take my parents out for dinner. A friend of mine that used to work here said great things about it so I figured I'd give it a try. Here's how it went! Atmosphere/Appearance: Set right downtown Ypsilanti is this gem. There's street parking available all over the place, but around the corner behind Puffer Red's is a public parking lot that's free after 6:00pm. Once inside you see lots of exposed brick everywhere and nicely taken care of wooden floors. I loved the atmosphere here. It felt like a real BBQ joint and there;s plenty of space for big groups. Service: Emily was our server and she was perfect. She took excellent care of us, made great recommendations and just made our experience a great one. Food: I'm a wing connoisseur and when I find a place that doesn't fry theirs I HAVE to try them! So I got both the Cajun and Buffalo smoked wings. They were DELIGHTFUL and I'd absolutely get them again. For my side I went with the Brussels Sprouts which are roasted, tossed in a bacon dressing then sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. Fantastic. The food here is good so far and I'm sure I have to try the actual barbecue in the future! Value: My wings were $10.00 an order (I had 2) which came with 8 decent-sized wings which isn't too bad. My sprouts were $4.00 so not bad at all! In conclusion this place was absolutely worth checking out. Yum, yum, yum. It's hard for me to resist this joint and their Mac and cheese! We came in on a Friday night. No wait, even to sit on the patio! I'm not sure how this place isn't packed constantly. On vacation and paid a second visit to this great city BBQ spot (first visit was @ six years ago). I chose Red Rock for dinner because my memories of the food were top notch, and tonight's meal did not disappoint. I had the smoked ribs with the Brussels sprouts and collard greens as sides. Although the collard green were a bit saltier than I would have preferred, they were still tasty, while my ribs and especially the Brussels sprouts were excellent. I also tried my wife's pulled pork, which had me completely jealous--it was even better than my ribs. There are a variety of BBQ sauces on the table so you can mix it up with each bite if you wish, but I was most surprised with the honey mustard sauce--delicious! Their corn bread is simply excellent--especially with the dark, rich honey. And I was truly grateful that they honored my off-menu request for some of the buffalo Mac-n-Cheese that was on the menu when I visited years ago--the stuff is absolutely great (though it does has a noticeable bleu cheese kick to it, so just be warned if you dare give it a whirl). Red Rock is an average barbecue restaurant in downtown Ypsilanti. The service is pretty good. The waitress refilled our waters without us having to ask and always came back to check on us. We ordered the Duo with pulled pork and angus brisket & a pulled pork sandwich. The portions were pretty small. I thought the duo would be larger because it was 2 meats but they only give 4 slices of brisket and a small piece of pork. We chose cornbread as one of our sides. I liked it because it was soft, warm and had pieces of corn You have to add the sauces yourself. They have a few selections but all the sauces are weak. I tried to place a pickup order today and they seem to have completely revamped their menu over the last few days and no longer have many of their staples like the pretzel bun, The Miracle Burger, the Tipsy Ypsi. I asked if they had an updated menu that I could see and they said they did not. Went here for sweetest day. The steak was by far the best I have had in a long time! I cooked it in the herb butter and it literally melted in my mouth. The Mac n cheese was creamy and the fries crunchy. Not a single complaint. Also the shrimp appetizer with the bread was delish. Dredge the bread in the bottom of the sauce then add the shrimp. I stopped off here after looking for a place to eat. I had never been here and I had a taste for corned beef. I sat at the bar and had a tasty craft beer while deciding on my order. The bartender was very helpful. She suggested the Corned beef slider, pulled pork and brisket. I also got an order of fries. Sounds great! There are various BBQ sauces you can partake of. Based on a "democratic" vote, our work team decided on this place for lunch in part because of its proximity to our work meeting just off Michigan Avenue in downtown Ypsilanti. Entering Red Rock gave the familiar feel of Ypsilanti cultural (relative to Ann Arbor) I've slowly become more aware of ~ basic but sturdy, older yet charming, full of hardworking, down to Earth, multigenerational Ypsi natives whose city pride exceeds the sometimes privileged pretentious nature of Ann Arbor's more transitional residents. It was a dark entering this place but light enough to read the menu. I ordered chicken sliders with side of sweet potato fries. Water for beverage, of course, since my health conscious self would rather eat my sugary source of calories (e.g. pie, cale, etc) rather than drink it (soda, tea, etc)! Our waiter did a great job of detailing the variety of sauces on the table. Ive forgotten the Red's official name for it, but I selected the sweet, slightly spicy sauce to douse my sliders with. It turned out to be a beautiful combination. NOTE: The sweet potato fries, however, turned out to be MUCH too salty. Sweet potato lovers like me look for the sweet (not the salt) in sweet potato fries! Service was without incident, friendly, not remarkable. We've wanted to come here for a long time and we finally did. We came here after 9pm and it wasn't crowded at all. They have happy hour after 9pm and it was perfect. I've always wanted to try Bell's hopslam and found it too expensive to pick up a six pack. So it was perfect that I had a glass of hopslam for $5 here. So that's checked off my list! :) Next we got their Mac and cheese which was very very yummy. Rich, creamy and crunchy top. We had their wings as well. It was good especially because it wasn't oily. For anyone who grew up in the Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti area will remember when the latter of the two had some great restaurants that served some of the best food you could imagine. While each community has it's staples when it comes to culinary cuisine, the Red Rock Downtown Barbecue is a big step forward in Ypsilanti's downtown revitalization program. How can you go wrong when you hear the world "Barbeque" or BBQ for short!? This word is enough to make your taste buds start craving immediate satisfaction, and this place delivers on that promise. I started my night off with a "Pretzel and Beer Cheese" appetizer, which was very good. Then I decided to order a "Tipsy Ypsi," which has Smoked pulled chicken, topped with Michigan beer cheese, smoked bacon, lettuce and tomato, served on a brioche bun. I really enjoyed this sandwich, as it gave my taste buds something to write home about. Next time I was to try their "Loaded Fried Green Tomatoes." The Red Rock Downtown Barbecue is an above average place that offers some really good entrees. Red Rock has some really good BBQ. We did a take out order of a number of items off the menu and there wasn't one thing that I found to be lacking. The ribs were delicious and smoky and pulled right off the bone, the mac and cheese was nice and creamy, the slaw was fantastic and had a nice, sweet twist--made with apple and cherries, the half chicken was juicy and flavorful which can sometimes be tough to achieve with chicken, green beans were cooked perfectly--not mushy at all. The corn bread was moist and lightly sweet. Delicious! The chicken wings were probably my least favorite in that they were quite salty but if you like REALLY salty you'll probably dig these. I didn't dislike them, I just couldn't eat that many. Which I guess isn't necessarily a bad thing! ;) I also feel that given the size of the servings the price is really right. We had left overs for 2 dinners after our feast. Sides are only $3 which is great if you want to try a number of things. I'm excited to give the pulled pork and the burnt ends a try since it seems like other yelpers seem to love them. Looks like they have a killer happy hour too, with 1/2 appetizers and great drink specials from 3-6pm. I'm in! When a friend recommends a restaurant strongly, you take it and just run with it. Pork gets the front of the line pass my friend. Barbecue is also the best way to cook this heaven sent meat, and red rock is the place to get it when you're in the area. These friends of ours couldn't stop talking about their nachos. It's probably the last thing that comes to mind if I'm ordering something at a restaurant, but ok, we put one in. Burnt ends was placed then the sampler platter for the win. Food arrives shortly and we begin to destroy. Yummy in my tummy says the nachos, which is topped with their pulled pork. It's totally amazing,,, now I know why my friends husband was so adamant about these darn nachos. The burnt ends are exceptional, I could probably eat that all day. That right there sir, is darn good drinking food. The sampler platter arrives,,, brisket, ribs, half chicken, mac and cheese, greens, corn bread, and last but not the least, brussel sprouts. All of the above is extremely destructive,, trust me,, you will be dreaming about this later on tonight. It's good honest no holds barred competition with that one restaurant in corktown. What used to be our favorite BBQ place has now turned into our least favorite spot. Ribs were tough, undercooked with the membrane still intact. Mac and cheese sauce has clearly separated with nothing but oil and cheese on top. Brussel sprouts would of been good but missed the glaze there. Ordered for pick up, arrived on time, waiting 25 minutes after arrival before food was brought out only for it to be inedible. Paid over $100 with tip for a meal we couldn't even eat. Driving from Bowling Green to Saginaw we looked for a restaurant that was open after 10:00 p.m. and found this place on the list. Being self proclaimed barbecue experts were very excited to try the food. To be honest I was skeptical before we even walked in the door simply because barbecue in the Great Lakes has never contended with Southern barbecue. And after eating at more than 500 barbecue restaurants in the last 10 years that's a statement that I'm allowed to make. Please keep in mind that I am rating this in comparison to the rest of the United States not just Southern Michigan. Meanwhile, after eating dinner here we can say that there are some very good things on the menu and other items that are average. On the other hand, nothing is disappointing. And, you can always count on wonderful service in a clean, inviting atmosphere. There were only two of us eating, but we went big like we always do and ordered The Quad just so we had a chance to sample as many meats as we could. Let's go through the meats and rate them all. *The Brisket: The brisket was close to average, but a little below. Unfortunately, it wasn't very tender and didn't have a lot of flavor. I had to work really hard and put my knife into over drive just to cut through it. I wouldn't order this meet again. No tenderness= big letdown. *Half Chicken: When I sliced my knife into the chicken for the first time juices came out and the chicken was moist.The problem was there was little to no flavor. I think that if they season the chicken just a little bit it would be phenomenal because the cooks did a fabulous job at keeping it from getting dry. Luckily, adding barbecue sauce saved it. *Pulled Pork: If you want to be impressed order the pulled pork. This pull porked rivaled most that I've had in Texas and throughout the Southern States. It packed a ton of flavor and didn't need a barbecue sauce at all. Well done guys. *The Ribs: We've had Better ribs but let's be real this is Michigan and for Michigan these ribs are good. There a well seasoned Kama tender and the meat fell off the bone. We had far more meat than we needed, but wanted to make sure we tested everything. However, we were far more impressed with the sides than the main course. They did a wonderful job with the sides. As a matter of fact, if I ever returned I would just order sides. Here's a brief rundown of what we ate. *Brussel Sprouts: What a home run! These are some of the best brussels sprouts I've ever eaten. Phenomenal job and if there's one side that you're going to order this has to be it. *Green Beans: I give a good nod to the green beans. While they were only lightly seasoned they tasted fresh rather than fresh-frozen like you get at many competitors. *Sweet Potato Fries: These fries tasted like they were haan cut on site, which is a good thing. We would order them again. They weren't greasy and were lightly season with just enough salt to add a little flavor. *Corn Bread Rolls: I have a sweet tooth and there was just enough sweetness to them. What was also impressive is that the corn muffins weren't dry. They had a good amount of moistness coupled with a little bit of sweetness. *Side Salad: More than impressed with the side salad. It came with fresh greens, what tasted like fresh, hand cut vegetables and good dressing. We were so excited this wasn't filled with iceberg lettuce. In closing I would say that anybody that's a barbecue fanatic would consider this barbecue average. Nevertheless, the sides give the restaurant a lift. And, I'm guessing most people are more concerned with the booze then they are the food here as the bar was packed. If that's the case you'll have a wonderful time. Two strikes, and Red Rock is out for us. We went a few months ago with friends, and service was unbearably slow. We gave them the benefit of the doubt when our server explained that a couple people had called in, so they were short-staffed. So, what was the excuse during our visit this time? We weren't even offered an explanation or apology. As far as food goes, the chicken and pork sliders were great--the chicken better than the pork. The combination plate with pulled pork and brisket is overpriced for the serving sizes, but the meats were good, and we liked the North Carolina and original BBQ sauces, though they were both too runny for our tastes. The collard greens are outstanding! The baked beans (or whatever they call them here) are exceedingly bland and require a lot of original BBQ sauce to give them flavor. The Mac and cheese is top-notch if you like lots of cheese. The meat on the reuben was far too fatty, and my daughter didn't even eat half of it. My youngest loves mac and cheese, and ordered hers with chicken. Unfortunately, there were hardly any noodles. It was basically super cheesy smoked chicken with a few noodles, which was kind of gross. So, the cons far outweighed the pros on both visits, and we will not be returning to Red Rock. read more

Great bbq with a cool ambiance. The brisket was moist and tender. The pulled pork was not that great. It was tender, but tasted more like something prepared in a crock pot than actual bbq. It was missing the smokiness and slightly drier pieces that make pulled pork a texturally appealing dish. For sides we got collard greens and the garbage fries. The collard greens were good and had a small amount of spice, but it could use more. The garbage fries left a lot to be desired. With a name like that they needed more layers of cheese and toppings. We also had the fried green tomatoes that were ok. The tomatoes were not super flavorful so you could have put anything on the plate. The pimento cheese spread was excellent though. The service was excellent. The server was attentive and explained their bbq sauces very nicely. The sauces were good, the sweet and spicy variety had way too much pineapple flavor that overpowered each bite. In the end, there are better bbq places in the area -- Smokehouse 52 being one. This place should be called Slow Rock. Got there at 7:30pm and didn't get served till 9:00pm. When our food arrived it was cold, meat was unflavored, and chicken was still raw. Terrible service and our waiter appeared as if he was high as a kite. Never checked on us and didn't seem to care when we told him about our food concerns. My colleagues and I took our customers here for dinner on a Tuesday evening. We arrived around 6:30 and the place wasn't too crowded, but it definitely wasn't empty either. We sat at one of the high top tables near the bar. The table had a lot of stuff on it so we had to move a lot of things around in order to make room for our food when it arrived. Our waitress was attentive and helped us in picking our some local beers that we'd enjoy. After the beers arrived we ordered two appetizers - the burnt ends and some sort of nacho/fry/thing I can't remember. The appetizers were smaller than I'd expect for the price but they were very good. Unfortunately though, when the kitchen runner dropped off our burnt ends he failed to make their signature BBQ sauce mixture for us to use and so by the time our waitress stopped by to make it we had already eaten all the meat. The menu has a variety of sandwiches and the traditional meat and two sides options. The pork that I ordered was very decadent without being too fatty. I also chose to mix the sauces to create my own vinegar mustard bbq hybrid that was delicious without being salty or sweet. The sides I selected were the cheesy corn and the baked beans. The cheesy corn is something I am going to be trying to recreate at home because it was so delicious I can't stop thinking about it. Think the most amazing Mac and cheese but then replace the Mac with roasted corn. The beans were good but nothing to want to order again. Some of my dinner companions also got the Brussel sprouts (good but nothing special) and the Mac and cheese (amazing). BEST HAPPY HOUR IN TOWN!!! I am a happy hour regular: 3pm to 6pm every day and 9pm to close. They offer $1 sliders (chicken, pork, or brisket) on brioche buns and wonderful pickles. A few of these make a perfect snack or even meal. They have more discounted snacks and alcohol during happy hour (see picture); I usually grab a beer for $2 off and 3 sliders. Speaking of, they have a lovely beer selection and keep an updated list on their website. Used to be our FAVORITE bbq place in the Ypsi-Arbor area, doubtful we will ever go again. I first made my phone order from an older menu online. Imagine my surprise when my total was $50.00 more than what I estimated....oops! Talk about inflation! I had to re-work my order back down to closer to $110.00 but it wasn't easy. So sad to get a rack of something called "ribs" but what my niece aptly called, beef jerky" they were so dried out and overcooked. The chicken, which used to be their most amazing meat, while spiced beautifully, was dangerously underdone, rendering eating it an adventure. The salad, which is one of the only salads I will order ANYWHERE was incredibly bland and flavorless. We all decided that they forgot the vinegrate entirely. It seemed to the only explanation. MOST SAD OF ALL- the pretzels which my nephew likes so much, Er, used to like so much as did we- was also dry, bland and flavorless. At first I speculated that it got an extra steam bath during its ride home. but my nephew pointed out that it was missing some sort of "glaze" on it and salt which would have made it have SOME sort of flavor. I dont know, I am not the pretzel expert, but my nephew was quite sure. All I know is I AM a FLAVOR expert and that was trash. I know inflation has hit everyone, but we cannot afford to throw THAT kind of money on a meal that I myself would never have served up to guests at my house. read more

As a BBQ restaurant 2 stars As a bar 5 stars Pros- beer selection and great happy hour Cons- The brisket and sides are not very good. I'm rushing back here for the bar. They have an excellent taplist, de ent proces, and then an awesome happy hour deal. As for the restaurant, the waitress was really nice and thats where my compliments end. The food is just uninspiring and lacks passion. It just comes across as edible. The brisket was dry, lacked flavor/seasoning, and there was no bark. The mac and cheese and beans followed suit. It wouldmt even pass for a graduation buffet. The fries were pretty good but c'mon now, anyone can heat up waffle fries. From a BBQ standpoint it didnt get me sick and isn't the worst I've had. Perhaps the route to go is sandwiches here. The meat and sides aren't anywhere near the quality that can stand on their own. In closing, I really like this place from a bar and MAYBE quick eats perspective, but I don't think I'll ever spend $ on an entree here again. read more

Every time I come back to Michigan and visit my friend in Ypsi, we always come to Red Rock. The staff is wonderful. In particular, Melissa & Monica are always so friendly and accommodating. I am very picky about my rye Manhattan and Melissa gets it right every time. I also had the pleasure of meeting the owner (Shawn) this trip and you can tell he is a genuinely very good guy. Super kind, interactive with the customers, and makes sure everyone is taken care of very well. Now, let's talk about the food... so good! Try their fried pickle spears, cajun chicken wings, burnt ends, sliders... all of it. I especially love their mac & cheese with brisket added in. It is addictively delicious. The atmosphere is very pleasant and laid back, a perfect space for small or large groups. Great music and the layout is well-designed. If I lived in Michigan, I would be coming here all the time. I have had hit or miss service and hit or miss brisket in here. The beers are not always well stocked but I like knowing what is there is fresh. I still like the joint I just wanted to get that stuff out of the way. Staffing issues are common in the restaurant business. Not saying I like it but I think they are still working out some bumps. I have had the gamut from friendly and competent all the way down to distracted and uninterested but no one has ever been out and out rude. The brisket thing is just what it is, even the best places will occasionally put out a tough, clunker piece of brisket. Brisket is tempermental. I have had fabu brisket here that was amazing and also tough which was very disappointing. The rest of the food has all been quite good. Ribs, mac and cheese, pulled pork and waffle fries are standouts. Cole slaw is decent, cowboy beans, sweet potato fries and corn bread will do. They need some help on those greens though, I like more kick. The food is solid. They are about a three and half but I can't go for four right now.. read more
